What kind of flowers do you guys like? (If any)

ARUGRGRG HONOURED, he's very much whatever i want to be too. Strap in I'm gonna take this as an excuse to ramble about this and drag persona thoughts. Like I've been trying to define my own persona for a minute, been going hog on pinterest boarding for myself and disparate inspirations, almost too many to wittle down without just getting in and exploring shit obviously. And I felt silly about letting Leopard be my character, but then it's like. What's more drag than having a person in your head that makes you feel powerful and speaks to you. So it's like well I guess it's you then huh. Guess that's gonna be me. I figure it's like fashion in general where I like a lot of it but what I like vs what feels good to wear is a different question.

Anyway yeah Sea themeing is really really central to them. I really like the idea of its fashion being very shredded, body focused, visceral but then also with aspects of like old glamor because it's just cunty, it's compelling and striking. Love love love that kinda heavy droopy hooded eye look and bold lip moment, high brows. Divine is a big insp.

I also LOVE when drag artists have associated textures with their fashion. barnacles, mould, burns, general distress, seaweed textures, old harbor ropes, everything about estuarys and ship docks that are aged ect. diving suits, any kinda cargo jumpsuit, handyman tradie core butchy labor. Second association I've kinda pulled from is lace / religious vibes because it's also reallyyyy compelling to me. Again TEXTURE dense wool, dense lace, weathering, rusty charms, crosses, sheer fabrics weighed down by chains and old belts and boots. THICK material gross denim.

The idea of being "Taken over" by unpleasantness and poor hygeine. I grew up in a way that was like viciously conditional, like trying to isolate the problem to appease but every part of your body has its own separate disappointments and harms, every part of your brain, clothes, presentation, you know. Like Leopard to me is the worst case sceneario to the parent and the abuser, like it's every trait they wish was left at the doorstep and away from them and it's like taking every bissected part of your brain and body that trauma cut into pieces and putting it back into one body that's like. Okay. I'm not in fragments anymore I'm unified by repulsion and indulgence. It's like that whole thing of being trans is like being your own murderer, to your parents idea of you. Leopard's like something that was drowned and came back, it's like all the black stuff purged after an exorcism became a person, you burned it alive and now it lives in smoke, it's a lace bridesmaid haunting you and it's laughing. Right. Warped memory come back to life, it's waking up. I don't really want to call it a vengeful character as much as it's just like. it's taking all those unpleasant cuttings and infections and stitching them back together.

Anyway anyway I'm indecisive, still early days obviously, and I don't have a drag mother so I'm just feeling it out in whatever way I can. uhhhh anyway here's some dogged up leopards. The first one doesn't really Feel like it to me but the 2nd one absolutely is. I'll probably workshop it more, drenched seadog. wouldsmell so bad. Again trying to see how I can include different motifs for it while still coming back to those core themes.

         when yixing had originally presented her with his song choice for the evaluation, admittedly, hyeri hadn’t hesitated a second before agreeing to it. she trusted her partner well enough to make a suitable choice for them without her input and he had. however, on second thought, the dancer thinks the song might have been a little too suitable for them. 

          it’s not until hyeri’s alone at home, earbuds plugged in and foot lazily tapping out the rhythm to the beat that she notices it: the utter familiarity of the lyrics compared to her and yixing’s current relationship. she could have pegged it down to coincidence ( after all, most people liked the biebs’ music even if they couldn’t stand the artist himself ) but, once hyeri had gotten the idea in her head -- that these lyrics hit way too close to home -- she simply couldn’t abandon it afterwards. only two months had passed since yixing asked her out to the restaurant to talk and hyeri still remembered the deadened look in his eyes as they spoke about those personal things. love troubles, where they’d been, where they’d been going; above all, hyeri remembered the tone of yixing’s voice and how well it’d matched her own depressing one once myungsoo had left her ( again. )

         they really had been each other’s company. ‘just wanna have a conversation/forget about the obligations.’ biebs’ voice crooned through the studio’s speakers and hyeri couldn’t shake away the similarity, even during a rehearsal when she should be focusing on the choreography instead. yixing teaches it to her himself, improvising moves from his own imagination and asking for her opinion every now and then during the partnered movements. hyeri does her best during all of that, forcing a smile and then smiling for real whenever the male catches her fake act in a moment of attention. she’s not immune to his worried glances every now and then but hyeri’s too much of a liar to let him know the thoughts that continually plague her.

         sometimes ‘just friends’ is complicated, too.                    “what do you think of--”          “no, raise your leg more there--”          “are you sure about--?”          “spin out here--”          “you take my hand and, no, wait, let’s do this--”

         it takes trial and error, bumps and bruises, lots of laughs and painful nights before hyeri feels like she’s ready for the performance. yixing’s choreography is fun, playful, and the dancer can’t believe how utterly a contrast it is to the very real problems that keep her up awake at night. she still worries about yixing, hopes that his troubles have lessened in the last four weeks, but there’s guilt, too, that hyeri has only added on to his personal burdens with this dance. And afterwards… when this performance is done and over, they’ll have to go back to friends with no obligations. ones who talk only when an ear and a shoulder is needed for the other to cry on. it’s an unsettling, bittersweet reality.

         “kt’s laugh grenade, lee hyeri, here to dance!” the girl announces cheerfully on the day of the performance. she salutes the judges with a wave of her hand and her dancer coach rolls his eyes dramatically-- a bit too used to this particular trainee’s antics. “just get on with it,” the male coach growls and hyeri grins in response, afterwards tugging at yixing’s arm excitedly.

         “he’s a fan of us already, i know it,” she whispers in her partner’s ear. hyeri reaches up to adjust the collar of the flannel shirt yixing wears, smoothing it out with the palms of her hands and glancing up at him with a warm smile. “i’m your fan, too, you know? let’s do this, chicken-lover zhang yixing,” she teases. her own costume is just as casual as his: ragged denim shorts and an oversized flannel shirt to cover a simple graphic tee underneath. the couple’s fashion is subtle but unmistakable, designating her and yixing as a unit as they take their starting positions on the floor.

         yixing had been adamant about giving hyeri enough parts in the choreography to show off her own skills and she agreed to take advantage of every single one of them, starting at the very beginning. when the music starts, she’s already in character, gifting her dance partner with a flirty smile as she struts forward to the center. she’s the flame and yixing is her willing moth, coming towards hyeri and complimenting her movements with his graceful ease. once the choreography had been nailed down, fostering the chemistry between the two dancers had come next. that, of course, had been the easy part.

         they separate and dance together, limbs extending and feet moving in sync with one another. it is rare that hyeri gets to dance with a male on par to her skill ( taemin being the only one for a long time ) and she still feels the headiness on stage of getting to dance freely, without having to be too thoughtful of making her companion look weaker in comparison. yixing could hold his own against her, so well as to make her worry about what she’d look like beside him-- a novel sensation. that kind of challenge drives her -- inspires her to work harder and to dance even better than before.

         every touch of yixing’s hand feels like fire against her skin and clothing. this man represents comfort to her, a reliable partner whose very touch lets her know that he’s there, ready to catch her. hyeri trusts him to do just that, relaxing her slim frame and letting him twist and drop her in the elegant flow of the routine. his grip around her waist is strong and supportive, and her answering smile is all too real as hyeri looks up at yixing once more. he drifts away to dance his solo part and she can’t look away from him even if she wanted to. yixing’s charisma is magnetic, too attractive for someone like her to want to run away from.

         ( she’d be outright lying to say her heart didn’t flutter at moments like this. )

         she rises with the tips of his fingers beneath her chin. hyeri’s lips part around quickened breaths and she effortlessly transitions back into their couple’s dance. together, apart, his hands on her hips and her eyes on the audience, dancing feels like a dream when it’s this easy with one another. it also lets hyeri forgets all her thoughts except those that matter in the moment: where to put what foot where, at what beat. where the hands go.

The mother and daughter, who hail from Bogotá, Colombia, team up to recreate famous images of women — similar to the way that others, including this Brooklyn family, have used Instagram for stylish teaching moments. As a fashion designer, Peña developed the idea for the Instagram account when Ana was even younger than 4.

“I choose to stay home with Ana to take care of her, and that was a decision I made with my husband. At the beginning, it was a lot of free time because she was napping a lot because she was a baby. Then she grew, and she was enjoying it a lot,” Peña tells Yahoo Style on the evolution of the account. “She was saying, ‘I want this and I want that!’ She really loved posing for the pictures. One day I found a book for kids, and it was telling stories of great women of the world.”

Ana has dressed up as a number of notable women in history, film, and pop culture — many of whom have made great contributions to society. She recently dressed up as the popular superheroine Wonder Woman.

“Ana got really excited when I told her we were dressing up as a superhero from a movie,” Peña shares on her daughter’s costume.

Diana Princess of the Amazons, trained Warrior, Wonder Woman was designated by the United Nations as its Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, a gesture intended to promote gender equality and empowerment of women and girls.

“She got even more excited when she learned about Wonder Woman — a female superhero who was a princess but also a warrior with super strength,” Peña says.

She needed a hero. So that's what she became.

“You can see the fierceness in Ana’s face in the pictures she really got into the heroine character,” Peña shares. “She also learned how she can be like Wonder Woman in her life by believing in her strength and fighting for what she believes!”

Ana also recently copied Emma Stone’s look for her character Mia in La La Land.

She also made a miniversion of Emma Watson’s look from the Paris premiere of Beauty and the Beast. The caption notes that the actress’s custom Louis Vuitton dress was created from used plastic bottles.

Peña “loves” Watson because she’s “a role model that I want for my kid who teaches girls that they can be intelligent, and that beauty is not only what you can see with your eyes but something that’s in your soul.”

The dress that Peña created for her daughter looks very similar to Watson’s Louis Vuitton frock, designed by the creative director of the house, Nicolas Ghesquière. Peña’s creation appeared to impress Ghesquière, as he liked the three posts she shared of her daughter wearing the homemade piece.

Watson’s stylist, Rebecca Corbin-Murray, also appeared to love the re-creation. She posted the image with the caption, “Major fashionista in the making!! Never too young to love fashion — and never too young to care about where your clothes come from and who made them!”

In the past, Ana has channeled others who have made an impact in the fashion industry. In early February, the 4-year-old sported a blond wig, black sunglasses, and a sleek black coat with white sandals to mirror Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue.

For this costume, she slipped on a rather large red wig — similar to Coddington’s signature untamed mane — and a black jacket.

Another fashion figure Ana has emulated? Jackie Kennedy. In December 2016, Ana wore a red coat, with a matching hat and white gloves, that mirrored the Oleg Cassini suit that Kennedy wore in 1961.

Another influential figure Ana is inspired by? Rosa Parks. She created Parks’ famous booking photo from her February 1956 arrest, with her hair pulled up in braids and wearing oversize glasses.

“I told Ana the story of Frida, and she loved the story because when Frida was a little girl, she was very different from the other girls. That made her feel so special,” Peña explains to Yahoo Style. “When I told Ana the story, she loved it and told me she wanted to dress like Frida. So I did it.”

Peña teaches her daughter about each of the people she dresses up as. “I tried to choose people that were really inspiring — the stories of really empowering women,” Peña says. “That’s what I want for my kid. I started to think of course we love Disney princesses, but I don’t want her to think that the only role model she can have is to be a princess.” She continues, “I want her to think that she can be more like Princess Leia — she can be against the empire and fight with the rebels, things like that.”

Peña continued, “She’s always asking to dress like Princess Leia because we’ve seen the movie three times. She loves Star Wars.”

Considering that Peña loves strong female characters, Mayim Bialik, an accomplished actress and neuroscientist, was another fitting costume choice. Ana dressed up as Bialik’s character, Amy Farrah Fowler, from The Big Bang Theory.
