Mitzy shook it's head. "See I was a little kid too. I didn't deserve to see my dad get crushed by rocks. Just like you didn't deserve to see yours die from your own dragon."
Mitzy sighed, it's face softened. "Fine, fine FINE. I'll stay. Let's just change the subject. And for the love of Thor, don't ask dad about why he cant have anymore kids."
Eyes down, he shook his head. "No, no you didn't."
"Why would I ever--" He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Forget it, you don't have to worry about that." Taking a breath, he placed his hands on his hips. "Okay, so, the plan for tomorrow is to take measurements of your wings, and finding a suitable material that can help you to fly again. We'll... we'll take Viggo to Gothi, see if she has any remedies for his eyesight, then see what she can do about those burns."
"We have huts for visitors, you and your dad can stay in one of those for the night." Picking up a stick, he drew a quick map in the dirt, showing it where to go.
"I should get home, Astrid will be wondering where I went off to. Will you be alright?"

Hey! Saw your essay about the inconsistencies. Ah ye. When contrasting the Httyd movies with the shows, I like to not take it all that seriously. "But the shows are canon!!!!!" the shows are a beautiful and meaningful AU of the movies and vice versa; I've fared wonderfully treating them like that. Keeping the good parts for inspo and tossing the rest tbh.
E.g. I'm keeping Dagur and Viggo and the Fireworms for canon. Maybe there was an outpost called Dragon's Edge once, but I like to think to myself that Hiccup merely used it as a weekend base camp / storehouse for further explorations rather than actually living there for extended periods of time. He had to make all his Httyd2 improvements on Berk somehow within those five years lol. He would have had to abandon Dragon's Edge wayyy earlier to be able to have a constant presence on his home island that would earn him the village's support and Stoick's eye regarding Chieftainship. I'm definitely keeping the volcano eruption though. Also the Buffalord, the amazing Season 4 Hiccstrid kiss, the Night Terrors and Chicken. And of course the gang becoming better friends.
...On the other hand I'm definitely treating Heather, Mala, the Wingmaidens and all the dragons I don't personally like as vivid fever dreams lol. I'm also ignoring the comics. Had Hiccup truly encountered Viggo and gone through all of that Rtte character development canonically, he wouldn't have acted as naive as he did in Httyd2... Viggo already taught him better than that.
Those are just my two cents, they are also helping me embrace such things as Homecoming etc.
If you could build your canon however you liked, what would you keep? :)
I don't know if you meant it like this but I do want to clarify that I adore the first 2 movies, GotNF, LotB, RoB, DoB, and RttE. And I like elements of Httyd 3 and Homecoming, but not them in general.
(I have no intention of reading the comics - they don't interest me).
Criticising stuff I like, and pulling it apart to see how it ticks is literally my biggest hobby, so, no problems enjoying it there.
I would honestly keep most of it, so here's a list of some of what I'd remove instead:
The inconsistencies between httyd 1 ending and RoB opening - mostly to do with the dragons' integration into Berk and the new infrastructure for the dragons.
Stoick's inconsistent and easily swayed opinion on the dragons - he would never allow them to be banished from Berk unless he was physically forced to. They saved Hiccup's life, they pretty much are Hiccup's life, and he would never dishonour Valka's memory by going against her ideals (esp since her son basically redeemed her weirdness by proving her right 15 years later).
Gothi's role - she shouldn't be the only healer on Berk, she shouldn't even be a healer. They made new characters for Mulch, Bucket, Mildew, Johann, Silent Sven, Alvin, Savage, Dagur and Heather (and most of those are males) so just kick one of those out and build a new healer for Berk (bonus points if its a relation of one of the Riders e.g. a Thorston).
Johann's villain arc - I've talked about this a lot already so I won't repeat myself but this was an atrocious direction to take.
Viggo's redemption happening off screen
Dagur's redemption happening off screen
the Hunters having exactly the same ships as Drago (who comes from outside the archipelago & is designed with a different aesthetic than the vikings)
inconsistencies with the Hunter's Lore
Ryker being forgotten - the brother of ur main villain???? hello?
Krogan being so inconsistent...
Where are the women warriors???
Defenders of the Wing Lore Inconsistencies
Mala's whole personality - during the trial episode and marriage episodes especially
nearly every woman has a love interest
Dagur x Mala (not necessarily the ship - fandom adds depth to it tbh - but just how the show itself handles it)
Throk x Ruffnut (it's fine its just boring and doesn't add anything)
Gruffnut. the man annoys me - his design is lazy, his voice is annoying, he has an intruiging opportunity to add depth to the thorstons but is never utilised
Agnut. same as above
Astrid being in love with Hiccup but only in a conventional "im a woman and I will get jealous at any opportunity" kind of way
Gustav's lack of character development
the A team should not include those characters. Bucket and Mulch are farmers WHAT are they doing here. Gothi is old as fuck and she's got important shit to be doing (like apparently being the ONLY healer on Berk - srsly what r u gonna do when she dies?). Spitelout is on the Berk Council and is one of the main leaders of their military, why would he want to be bossed around by a 19 yro. the only one who makes sense is Gustav.
why does Astrid have to build the A team at all?? shouldn't Stoick or the entire military force of Berk teach themselves to use dragons to fight off invaders????
Astrid being so inconsistent with her suspicions and cautions.
Astrid randomly deciding to be Mother to dragons like Garf and throwing away all her military training and paranoia to bring said dragons on actual military operations??? like just say you needed a conflict and picked The Woman to throw under the bus.
Heather's (and Oswald's) mild backstory inconsistency.
Heather being a femme fatale.
Posing for the camera
The Wingmaidens - they're an obvious scramble to add female characters but they fall short on believability and worldbuilding.
The Bewilderbeast beneath Beserker Island. I don't like how... fucky.. this makes the plot. We didn't need this, we could have just ended on Johann & Krogan heading towards Valka's mountain, which could explain why Hiccup was still exploring the archipelago in httyd 2. then we could have done a post-credits-esque scene with Valka decimating Johann and Krogan. boom, vibes preserved, plotholes kind of prevented.
ok theres probably a lot more but this was all i could think of. Ik it looks like a lot but most of it is just tweaking canon. the majority of RoB, DoB, and RttE are wonderful. otherwise I wouldn't give half of a shit about them.

Ok so, AU where Hiccup manages to grab hold of Viggo before he falls into the volcano, he almost drops him when lava spits up landing on Viggos left side of the face. Hiccup, with help from Toothless pulls Viggo up and away from the volcano, Hiccup finds something to try and help with the burns Viggo will definitely gain before he takes him back to his hut and gets Fishlegs to help with other treatments. Over the course of Viggo healing he starts to understand how the dragon riders think more, and decides he rather stay with them, but he knows he should leave once he is healed as all the riders, except Hiccup and kind of Fishlegs, clearly don't like him being there. Hiccup, on the other hand, slowly starts to fall in love with Viggo, he notices Viggos change in attitude, even if its just slightly over time, he knows that Viggo will have to go once he's healed, but he wants him to stay. Once Viggo heals, he leaves for about two-three months, in that time the dragon riders notice how Hiccup seems rather upset, even if he tries to hide it. Fishlegs ends up being the one to call them all together while Hiccup and Toothless were busy doing something else, he suggests they go look for Viggo and bring him back. Everyone agrees, hating seeing their friend so sad. So one of them goes and finds Viggo and brings him back, no one tells Hiccup. Once Viggo is back on the island, he is put in the clubhouse and told to stay while the others all got Hiccup. They all push Hiccup into the clubhouse and leave the two alone, but still listened to what happens, because they are nosy. Hiccup sees Viggo and can't help but jump on him, hugging him tightly. It is then decided that Viggo would stay. Hiccup and Viggos relationship grows and they start dating. Slowly they start exploring the sexual side of the relationship. Hiccup, who was already a brat before, starts being even brattier. Wanting to see how far he can push Viggo, before he he tries to tame him. The two are alone in Hiccups hut, that him and Viggo now share, and Hiccup says something that tips Viggo over the edge, without thinking Viggo, who had been sitting on the bed, grabbed Hiccup and throws him over his lap on his stomach, Hiccup has the air punched out of him and before he can contain himself, Viggo his pulling down he pants to spank him. Hiccup whimpers and whines as Viggo spanks him. But still continues being a brat. So, Viggo ends up finding something they could use temporarily as a type of cock ring so Hiccup wouldn't cum. He torments Hiccup with pleasure until he finally submits, he's a sobbing, whimpering and whining mess by this time, Viggos cock deep inside him thrusting hard, Viggo removes the makeshift cock ring and the two of them climax at the same time. Viggo obviously gives Hiccup fabulous aftercare and they cuddle in bed. Toothless, who had been watching the other dragons, making sure they didnt get into any trouble, returns to Hiccup and Viggos hut, sees them cuddling and, obviously, has to join them. They all laugh and stay like that for a few hours.
Oooooooooh, this is great. This is really great. I love the situation that’s set up here, and the sexual scenario at the end! Viggo Grimborn Lives AU… sort of… More like “The Riders Know Viggo Survived the Volcano” AU. It’s really great comfort in the hurt and comfort dichotomy.
Thank you for sharing!

Me moving from a GoT hyperfixation straight to a HTTYD fixation seeing this post: >:) I haven't gotten past the middle of book 2 but shhh
He definitely quoted Daenerys or Tyrion, my personal go-to for GoT/HTTYD crossovers is Hiccup saying Dracarys "A dragon is not a slave." Tbh that whole scene is kinda Hiccup (kinda cause of the whole "kill the masters" thing, our boy's a pacifist) also the scene before that, where Dany "agrees to sell" one of her dragons is very Hiccup/Dragon Hunter coded ("I have dragons... I'll give you one." "How many?" "One." "Two!" "One.")
Another one from Dany, although I can never think of proper context to fit it into -- "He was no dragon. Fire cannot kill a dragon." Daenerys just has that naive, saviour thing going on (at least in the first books) which is very Hiccup lmao.
Tyrion is a good second option ("Littlefinger stroked the little spike of his bears. "Lysa has woes of her own. Clansmen raiding (...) and better armed than ever before." "Distressing," said Tyrion Lannister, who had armed them." Book 2, Tyrion IV)
But tbh the one scene (from the show) of his that would fit the best with Hiccup imo is when he finally meets Dany's dragons. (Just from that scene we have: "I'm here to help. Don't eat the help."; "It wouldn't even have to be a big dragon. It could be little... like me."; "Next time I have an idea like that... punch me in the face.")
Renly and Jon's unrelenting sass is also an option lol ("There are worse crimes. The way you dress, for one." Book 1, Eddard IV; "I'm to be made a brother with the rest of you, can you believe it?" "No, truly?" Book 1, Jon VI tbh Littlefinger, the one addressed in the first quote, and Sam, the one speaking in the second quote, are very Viggo/Fishlegs coded)
Another one from Renly (absolutely iconic, that lad) -- "The whole of the realm denies it, brother. Old men deny it with their death rattle, and unborn children deny it in their mothers' wombs. They deny it in (the south) and they deny it in (the north). No one wants you for their king. Sorry."
EDIT: Before I forget and disregarding my feelings about season 8 here's this (also: @bayofalgecirascranes @per4mancecheck, tagging y'all since you wanted to know lol)
I had a dream my sister was talking to me about Race to the Edge because she used to watch it when she was younger and she was giving me trivia like "Did you know Doc Ock voices Viggo?" I'm like "Of course sis everyone knows that!"
But then she was like "Well did you know Hiccup quotes Game of Thrones in one of the episodes" I was like "??????? Game of Thrones??? When???" And she didn't answer because I woke up
#A dragon is not a slave is still the one thing I want Hiccup to say the most#And also Dracarys#Can't go without Dracarys#Httyd#Got#Asoiaf#Holy shit this was longer than I intended#That's what you get for letting me see a post with two of my hyperfixations lol

Grimmel wasn't as smart as the movie makes him look.
he was honestly obnoxious with his little god complex. he could have been a teensy more humble, especially with how stupid he is.
first, he didn't have the light fury drugged with the deathgripper venom. that allowed her to do a lot of things that really jinxed him in the end, especially when she revealed the Hidden World to Toothless (and Hicstrid, if i remember correctly). that offered a whole new arsenal of dragons for Toothless to command. even if he didn't know it existed, wouldn't it have been just plain foolish to let a wild dragon do wild dragon things when her single job was to seduce Toothless and bring him back to Grimmel to be slaughtered? especially when he knew she must've had a family out there she could have easily ran back to? Grimmel was taking a shot in the dark by using her in the first place.
second, he only had deathgrippers. he didn't keep a SINGLE other dragon. and while i love deathgrippers with all my heart, they do have a lot of weaknesses. they can't breathe fire (naturally, they wouldn't need to as ambush hunters) so against dragons who can fire at a long range, they're basically useless. they have to get close to a target to sting it and they certainly aren't THAT fast. definitely not fast enough to chase down a night fury (arguably one of the fastest dragons in the air) and sting it. with their mantis-like front legs, it would have been equally hard on land. which is why they're AMBUSH HUNTERS. had he had some deadly nadders or something, he'd probably would've claimed more lives in that fight. hell, he's probably smart enough to have grabbed a skrill. but he didn't.
third, why didn't he just grab Toothless himself? the gang is very, very trusting and probably would've accepted him. he could have easily made up a name and story on the spot that made him look like he rescued the deathgrippers. (ex."i'm Nicholas and these are my deathgrippers. i rescued them and also they're very sick. these purple vials are actually a very special medicine i make specifically for their condition. Also I'm from like Nebraska or something.") and like nobody would question it (aside from Astrid who's actually skeptical and Hiccup and Fishlegs who'd probably want the recipe and know what the dragons do). then he could gain their trust and definitely use his like six deathgrippers to paralyze, kill, and carry Toothless off. you know the phrase "if you want something done right, you do it yourself"? yeah.
fourth, he didn't have many people working for him and he certainly didn't use them responsibly. if HE didn't want to manipulate the gang, he could have easily sent a guy. he certainly didn't give them ample weaponry or the ability to go airborne to fight for him. yes, he hates dragons, big fucking whoop. but so did Drago and Viggo and Ryker. but Drago used a bewilderbeast to usurp power from Valka's. Ryker and Viggo kept the dragons they captured to harvest materials like the nadders' spines or gronkle iron and probably more. they used the flightmare for Dragon Eye fuel. AND they let Heather keep Windshear. it honestly couldn't have been that fucking hard to give his men some damn gronkles or something. but no.
fifth, he obviously doesn't know shit about night furies for someone who's hunted them for a large chunk of his life. "they can't fly very far" then there's Toothless flying damn near across the entire archipelago with no rest, "they can't handle cold temperatures" and here's Toothless sitting in the artic for an hour or so because of the Snow Wraith and living on Berk for like 6 years, which is apparently freezing half the year. Grimmel HAD to have been tripping on some venom to actually believe that, especially since HE HUNTED THEM. he had no clue how they operate aside from the fact they're black, fast, and look like cats. he was ridiculous and it's a damn surprise one of those other dragon hunters didn't slap him across his horse-ass face for saying that.
#grimmel#grimmel the grisly#deathgrippers#deathgripper#grimmel is a dumb old man#night fury#night fury biology#light fury#toothless#stormfly#httyd 3#meatlug#barf and belch#still wanna kiss his ugly face tho

This might be kind of weird but, have you ever imagined seeing things from a dragon hunter's perspective?Believing that dragons are to be treated like farm animals (or even below them), getting pissed at the dragon riders for destroying anything you've tried to build, constantly being attacked and your hard works are ruined. It's pretty hard being a dragon hunter too isn't it? Of course I don't think this way personally, but wouldn't it be interesting if the story is told by the opposite side?
I don’t think this is an odd thought at all! I like it! I honestly wish that more of this perspective-switching were done in media. The best antagonists, and most realistic, are those whose perspectives are understandable. Human beings tend to have decent reasons for behaving as they do; the dragon hunters are no exception.
Honestly, I think that the dragon hunters can be presented even more favorably than how you described them. Your description of the dragon hunters might perhaps be interpreted to some readers as the hunters looking at the dragons with little concern or even contempt, and a lot of focus on their own personal problems. But I think that there are a lot of ways we can legitimately humanize and make sympathetic the dragon hunter characters. It doesn’t mean we have to agree with all of their actions, but I think they have a very fair case for being humanizable and understandable.
Trading animals is nothing new to human civilization. I’m not going to go into the morals of whether or not this should be the case, but the fact is that countless humans across countless civilizations have hunted, fished, and domesticated animals to be eaten for millennia. How long has humankind raised pigs, chickens, and cows for consumption and survival? How long have people hunted elk and deer or fished salmon and trout out of the waters? The dragon hunters are pretty normal people to capture dragons and then sell the creatures for profit. It’s been in human trade for innumerable species for millennia to do things like this.
Really, the oddballs are the Hairy Hooligans. Everyone else in the Barbaric Archipelago across dozens of islands... are pretty accustomed to dragons being fought in battle or captured for trade. Dragons aren’t pets, dragons aren’t friends.. .they’re enemy creatures. It’s normal to hunt or fight dragons in this society, just as it’s normal to eat chicken or fish. It’s only the Hairy Hooligan Vikings who have befriended the dragons... and very recently, at that.
So I don’t think we need to talk about the dragon hunters looking “down” upon dragons in some sort of contemptuous or unsympathetic way. It’s not like they’re attacking family pets. They’re not being crueler than normal in this society to dragons. From their perspective, they’re just living their day-to-day lives doing typical societal things in how you treat dragons, just as most cultures don’t mind if you eat a chicken for dinner.
From the dragon hunter’s perspective, Hiccup’s gang are complete oddballs. Those kids are doing something monumentally bizarre. The kids are disrupting good, honest, economic trade. The Hairy Hooligans are flying around and being lawless menaces, disrupting legal trade and making it harder for these hunters to earn their honest wages.
The dragon hunters are engaging in a common Viking trade that has demand across lots of islands. The dragon hunters are going to be people with real lives and real cares. There are going to be brother dragon hunters who are doing this together, and find great happiness in engaging in this activity. They are the heroes who sail bravely across the islands and capture the dangerous beasts that burden their island homes. Some Vikings are proud warriors who defend their home from invaders; the dragon hunters are those who fight the most dangerous enemies, the dragons themselves! There are going to be husbands and wives on the dragon hunter crews with families back home. They will have families that they love and care about; this dragon hunting is their income, and the means by which they can feed their spouse and children and maybe their elderly parents they’re taking care of at home. They will be upset when their ship gets sunk and they’re stranded on an island... Hiccup’s destroyed their ship, meaning it’ll be many more months before they can sail home to see their baby child. And there are going to be dragon hunters who have no one to return to, who constantly sail across the archipelago because there’s nothing back “home,” but have found a mission and a goal and a purpose on the open seas conducting this trade. There are going to be dragon hunters who question Viggo’s trade practices and wonder if they are ethical, but know they have no other job to go to if they quit. There are going to be dragon hunters who have a mean streak in them and enjoy harming the dragons. There are going to be other dragon hunters who respect the dragons they capture, and look with awe at the creature on the other side of the cage bars.
The dragon hunters are going to be people with happy tales and sad tales and tales of family and love and honor and moral questions and conflicted feelings and senses of pride and conviction and happiness and more. They don’t have to be any more villainous than Stoick was in HTTYD when he wanted to fight the dragons Hiccup wanted to save.
Sure, yes, there will be devious dragon hunters. We’ve seen some of them on the shows. Some of them enjoy capturing or threatening harm to Hiccup and the gang. Some of them have a bit too much of a violent streak to them. Some are going to be greedy for power and wealth. Totally. There will be bad apples in this bunch. But not all of them have to be, and if we really look at RTTE from their perspective, we’re going to see a lot of motivations that are very understandable and not at all... dark and demonic.
I love what you say about Hiccup and the gang being a nuisance! From the perspective of an everyday dragon hunter, Hiccup and the gang are being horrifically annoying. They’re do-gooder vigilantes harping after a cause that basically nobody cares about. They’re screwing up all the hard work you put into things, they’re being EXTREMELY reckless damaging SO MUCH expensive property (LIKE ENTIRE SHIPS THOSE ARE NOT CHEAP), they’re messing up the trade of multiple islands, they’re being unreasonable about what society and civilization is typically like. These unruly kids might believe in their cause, but from the perspective of the dragon hunter, it’s going to be a pretty ridiculous and pointless cause. All the fires the youths have set, all the buildings they have collapsed, all the ships they have sunk... I’m sure there are more than a few dragon hunters who wish these obnoxious kids would pay for the damage they caused. You are, as you so aptly put, being constantly attacked and your plans put to ruin as a dragon hunter.
I’m not going to say I agree with the dragon hunter perspective, either. I’m not going to say that them attacking Dragon’s Edge and fighting teenagers with weapons is ever okay. It’s not okay. And there are so many other things they do that are not okay. The entire point of the first HTTYD is that the Vikings don’t have to be violent to dragons, after all. Dragon hunters could treat the dragons better. But there’s definitely a way to turn this story around, look at their perspective, and understand why - even if their actions aren’t always right - there’s a reason they’re doing what they’re doing.
