Review:

When I look at other’s reviews, it seems that Fiona Apple’s Tidal has always been a standout, especially in terms of a debut. An album that brews and mixes different genres and moods into one crafted piece, its uniqueness is undeniable.

I personally like When the Pawn…, Apple’s sophomore album, better, but that doesn’t devalue this one. Despite the young age Apple wrote this at, her lyrics are still incomparable to anything else, and the piece is slam packed full of intimate and mature themes. Each track brings something new to the album, all amazing on their own.

The opening track, “Sleep to Dream”, sets the moody and lonely tone of the album immediately. It showcases the absolute poetry that will continue for the rest of the record, harvesting some of Apple’s most deepest thoughts.

“First you run like a fool just to be at my side And now you run like a fool, but you just run to hide, I can't abide.”

The next two tracks, “Sullen Girl” and “Shadowboxer”, follow this poetic theme. Shadowboxer stood out to me, as being more “aggressive” than its predecessors, and ended up being one of my favorites.

Fourth track, “Criminal”, was a song I had already heard. And I’m not surprised, as this is the shining star of Tidal. The metaphors in this are incredible and Apple really tunes her songwriting into this one. Along with the pop-like and jazzy elements that made this song go mainstream, it is a total bop, despite its deep lyrics.

“And I need to be redeemed To the one I’ve sinned against Because he’s all I ever knew of love.”

Next two tracks, “Slow Like Honey” and “The First Taste”, are also two standouts. I had also heard “The First Taste” before this, and I had fell in love. The soft, calming tropical melody tunes this to be a catchy and enjoyable piece. Compare this to “Slow like Honey”, which I had also fell in love with immediately, it is a sharp contrast. It’s slow and sweet, like a lullaby.

From here, the album falls just a bit, transitioning into more slower ballads. “Never is a Promise”, “The Child is Gone”, and “Pale September”, help with the soft and poetic tones of the record. The vibes becomes aesthetic, especially in “Pale September”.

“Carrion”, the final track, reminded me of the beginning, as it became a bit more aggressive at the end. It’s a nice wrap up to an already outstanding album, and it brought my hopes back up.

If you couldn’t tell, I cannot describe things properly for the life of me, but I promise you this album is incredible. I don’t think I’ll ever hear something like this again, unless from Apple herself. A few things this album reminds me of are fall, the coast, and solitude, just to give you a sneak peak. The way Apple expresses her emotions through the lyrics and melodies is so distinctive. I’m very excited to hear more from her!
