Here's a look at Day 5 of Whumptober. Derek hosts a Shepherd family reunion at his house. Jackson is not having a fun time. A bit of a warning for sensory overload.
---
Jackson bites down on his lip. The arguing twists his stomach. Usually, banter doesn’t bother him, but between the other loud noises, it grates on him.
“Jackson’s in plastics, just like Mark,” Carolyn says as if her daughters aren’t arguing.
“I know, Ma, I work at the hospital.”
Carolyn wrinkles her nose. “I was talking to your sister. She doesn’t get to spend as much time with your nephew as you.”
“Because I’m the favorite aunt.”
Amelia flashes Jackson a smirk. He tries to match it, but his lips tremble. Amelia tilts her head, observing him for a moment. Jackson’s fingers twitch. He’s got a fidget in his pocket, but he isn’t about to take it out in front of Carolyn and Nancy.
“Jack, do you want to get a soda?” Amelia asks.
“Littles can’t have caffeine,” Nancy cuts in. She looks at Jackson. “We can get you a water? Or I think Lizzie watered down some juice for the little ones…”
“Mark said he can have a little soda,” Amelia interrupts with an eye roll. She turns back to her nephew. “I know for a fact Derek got rootbeer.”
“I…I’m good,” Jackson catches his stutter under Carolyn and Nancy’s careful gaze.
Liz approaches them, holding a thick paper plate. It’s loaded up with just about one of everything from the buffet-style meal set out. Jackson catches a closer whiff of the grilled fish Derek made. Knowing Alex and Jackson's food aversions, his uncle was careful to make it separately. Now, Jackson can’t avoid it.
“Are you two ganging up on Amy again?” Liz asks, poking her fork into the plate.
“I’m making sure she doesn’t sugar up our nephew,” Nancy says. “She was about to give him caffeine.”
Amelia throws her arms in the air. “Jesus Christ, Nance, soda. It was a soda. I understand your children live a sad, beige diet. Our nephew does not.”

*I made the gif of Maze from Lucifer but I did not make the video it's from. I just like how the person who made the video did the text and that credit goes to them. I couldn't find a gif or picture of Maze from Lucifer saying this line which is insane because it's one of my favorites of her lines and Maze has some pretty funny lines. But I also I wanted this picture because it shows what kind of person Zoe's cousin is. She's a badass and she doesn't follow the rules and she'll snark while at it. I got the picture off of a humor video of season four of Lucifer. So this does not belong to me nor any of the other pictures or gifs.*
*I might change Callie's name. It was originally supposed to be like a space name but I just feel like it doesn't fit anymore.*
*Callie's name has offically been changed to Zarah (Like Sarah but with a "Z")*
*Added this to Archive of Our Own and added some gifs.* *The second Elle one is grainer because I had to reduce the file size for Tumblr.*

I have nothing to currently watch, so yeah I went back to Grey's Anatomy. I didn't finish it and the cast has a funny scenes. I don't need to explain myself.. but I will 😭
☆: I watched Calliope downfall 😭 unfortunately and I hated what her character became. She used to be so fun. She's a shell of what she once was.
☆: Stephanie grew on me, I didn't care about her during my season 1 to season 10 watch, she's such a fun character and I love how she's everyone's favorite resident. She made season 13 very enjoyable for me.
☆: I feel I had nothing really to say about Owen and Amelia, I don't like either character. I felt bad none of her family showed up to the wedding.
☆: the dead Derek jokes were funny.
☆: I didn't really cry for Derek, I cried for Meredith losing her husband, and people losing their friend. It was more so teary-eyed, then actual crying.
☆: Maggie losing her mom was sad.
☆: found out about the beef with Nathan, Meredith and Maggie. Maggie said she liked him, but by the time she told Meredith, Meredith had already slept with Nathan multiple times. They should have been adult about it and just been like we had a thing, instead of having Maggie looking stupid.
☆: The April and Jackson episode that shows their beginning and end was sad. I didn't expect that for their story. I'm pretty eh to both characters like April is an amazing doctor and I love when she yells at people.
☆: I already spoke somewhat about it, but Alex beat the fuck out of Andrew, like so much so that he could have lost his eye sight, and the characters felt bad for Alex?? Not the young student that was there to learn. Yes, these actors look the same age, but the character is younger then Alex and should have been protected. Yes. Alex assumed the worst however Jo told him to stop and Andrew wanted to explain.
☆: I haven't reached that season yet, but I don't get how Andrew would date Meredith after that. She's the ride or die for the man that almost went to jail for beating the fuck out of you.
☆: She should have dated Link..
☆: kind of fucked up how they killed both of Meredith love interest off. I hope she's not experiencing any sort of trauma from that.
☆: I enjoyed season 13 for Stephanie Edward's, she is the best resident. She reminded me of Christina the most. She focused on the work. Ben and Jo always had something else going on so they weren't always 100%
☆: Ben was annoying for not realizing the privilege he gets for being the chiefs husband.
☆: the old man jokes about Ben are so funny.
☆: He does a lot though, on greys anatomy and station 19 like chill.
☆: as much as I liked Nathan and Meredith, I get that the Meredith’s actress did not and I understand why they had Megan come back.. though I think it’s weird they made her get back with Nathan just to have them break up again.
☆: I feel like Maggie doesn’t get that even though Meredith is her sister, she’s not entitled to everything. Like when That Andrew| |Alex thing happened and Meredith said she didn’t know anything about it . It makes sense that Meredith wasn’t going to tell Maggie the person who had a thing with Andrew, what went down. Because I don’t think she has any really strong ties with anyone at the hospital especially not Alex. so obviously she wasn’t going to protect him from the cops.
☆: everyone is getting therapy but Owen… Alex could probably also use some
☆: how many times has Owen been married? Like 5?!? He needs to quit being a doctor and go find himself somewhere else. He needs to stop marrying doctors.
☆: it’s kind of weird, Maggie and Jackson don’t try to be like “we’re family.” Or anything. I mean Maggie calls Amelia for sister but then there’s nothing for Jackson. Like for Jackson this is his first sibling. I know the show is setting them up and them saying anything or even almost sorting alluding to the fact that they’re sort of siblings aka family is gross. Like they’ve been step siblings for two seasons and yet here they are episode 23 season 13 talking about sex. I’m just so uncomfortable. If Jackson and his mom both die and then Richard dies, does Maggie not get the Avery empire? Or does Richard have to legally claim her for that? Also none of the cast has teased them about being siblings..
☆: with Meredith she was like “I’m your sister. Pick me. Choose me.” And with Jackson it’s like 🤷🏾♀️😍
☆: if anyone on Grey’s Anatomy deserved a hero episode, I’m glad it went to Stephanie. She deep fried a r*pist. Saved herself and a little girl. Good 4 her.
☆: I wish they showed more of Nathan and April’s friendship.
☆: I’m happy with the ending Stephanie got but I wish she would have at least finished her residency. She was almost done and now all that hard work is gone. Unless are they allowed to pick up where they left off?
I said I wasn’t going to watch anymore yet here I am. Stephanie became a favorite character. I only watched season 13 for her episodes in all honesty.

introducing lexie as a girl in the bar that derek was tempted to cheat on meredith with was such a funny move. meredith meeting her half-sister for the first time and being pissed that she's That Girl. so funny. the angst. the drama. the eventual realizing that she isn't that bad and them becoming sisters.
i always wish that lexie hadn't died, though. she isn't particularly my favorite character but it's always so sad seeing the meredith/amelia/maggie sister club and it missing lexie 😭 afoijewfaoi
#dykewatching grey's#i really need to catch up on the newest season but alas. we started watching private practice instead like months ago#and now we are watching more wholesome things at night#but we will get there eventually#i really wanted to see more Shepherd Fam content w the dumb new intern boy bc it was really funny (minus the weird misunderstanding)#i love seeing amelia w family she actually likes 😭😭

Addison Montgomery for character asks!
Character Ask Game
ooooh fun! I didn't think anyone would send non-CM characters hehe
Why I like them: She is very smart and very pretty
Why I don’t: I don't like that she's a cheater and flirts with married men (in Private Practice)
Favorite episode (scene if movie): Hmm there's so many, it's impossible to pick. I always love it when she really stands up for her patients.
Favorite season/movie: Probably the first season of Private Practice!
Favorite line: "The only people who don't know Derek loves Meredith are Derek and Meredith."
Favorite outfit: Uhm ALL OF THEM? HAVE YOU SEEN HER? No but I kinda have a thing for her in pink scrubs. Don't ask me why. It looks so cute.
OTP: Addison + Mark and you cannot change my mind about that. I don't understand why they didn't end up together.
Brotp: I love her relationship with Amelia! It's so sweet that they think of each other as sisters.
Head Canon: Callie made her question her sexuality. I headcanon that Addison thought about kissing Callie a lot.
Unpopular opinion: I would have liked to see her character development if she wouldn't have gotten the chance to be a mother. I think it would have been a lot more interesting than seeing her with a baby.
A wish: Don't die
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: I hope she never returns to the Grey+Sloan Memorial Hospital full time (because she would probably die somehow)
5 words to best describe them: Beautiful, stunning, gorgeous, pretty, attractive
My nickname for them: Mommy

"That's not the only reason for my existence, but it's my favorite part of it." Now was not the time to be cracking jokes, especially when he'd just tried to override her choice of treatment plan on a patient that wasn't even his to begin with, but Derek knew how to be a pain in the ass, especially where his sisters were concerned. Especially where Amelia was concerned. "Just admit that you aren't always right and we can move on with our lives. And little tip for the future, Ames, but if you don't want me stepping in to fix things, try not to mess them up from the start." And there was that charming Derek Shepherd snark.
❝ do you just like― exist to make my life a living hell? ❞ they are quick words, ones that had the bite of frustration behind them. good god, did he know just the right way to push her buttons, to irritate more than she thought was possible. still he was amelia's favorite sibling, not that she was going to tell him that. ( he already had enough of an ego without adding that to his list of accomplishments. ) ❝ because, jesus christ― it sure as hell feels like it derek. ❞
@mischiefxmanagcd liked this for a starter !!

Can you do a headcanon about Lexie and Amelia being the annoying little sister's to Derek an Amelia and both of them get compared to their older siblings by everyone?
---
It wasn't always easy to be a Grey or a Shepard, especially when you were the younger born under that name.
For Lexie, being a Grey meant being compared to her older sister at a young age and being compelled to follow in the footsteps of her famous mother; Ellis Grey. She often didn't like the fact that she was not seen by everyone as a person of herself but always only carried under her last name.
That also meant pressure for the youngest. Nocturnal study phases, perfect grades, no time for friends. She often felt left out and alone, but she didn't know it any other way; she was always told that her career is more important than anything else in the world.
Amelia was no better. She also had a huge name that she had to bear with all the burdens that came with it. And she broke because of them. The feeling of being overwhelmed and fearful of failure were feelings that were accompanied by shame. There was no room for that in this family full of doctors.
She struggled through breakdowns, deaths, loss, drug use and pulled herself together at school to keep the name Shepard clean. And so she got one of the best neurosurgeons in the state.
Lexie and Amelia met in the early years of medical school when they walked into each other and since then, they have been inseparable. Because they both were the youngest and had two of the greatest doctors in the family, they quickly came to a common denominator.
Once they became medical students at Seattle Grace, where again they were only known as the younger siblings of the best surgeons, they gave Meredith and Derek hell on earth.
They were annoying in different ways. They crashed romantic dates, destroyed intimate moments and the quiet idyll of the OR was devastated by their problems and thoughts. Suddenly, they were in the center of the hospital, everyone talking about the younger generation of Shepards and Greys and put their siblings in the shadows.
Derek and Meredith also had to listen to the little quarrels between the best friends and mediate between them. They hated it, but they were happy and proud that they gave each other the support to keep each other away from problems.
But it was also the other way around; if the older ones had an argument, both tried with positive impressions and gentle efforts to bring them back together.
They went up the hierarchy and became the favorites of Bailey and Webber, you would think that Derek and Meredith were jealous of them. They are always choosing Lexie and/or Amelia to assist in an operation.
Now they were the Seattle Grace superstars.

Hi, I don't know if you are continuing to see Grey's Anatomy, but if it’s yes, I'd wanna say you a thing. After 18 season a lot of things are changed, and about this, what do you think? Are there many characters that you'd like to see again? Who? Why?
I'm still watching Grey's and will continue to, onto what is being rumored as their last season. I stopped watching Private Practice, I just need a break those people are terrible.
A TON has changed since the show's debut Meredith is the only original surgical resident left from the start along with Bailey and Webber everyone else is gone. I think Cristina and Derek's departures really changed the show. I know she will never come back but I would love to see Cristina show up for maybe one or two episodes at the end. Cristina was so damn brilliant and her and Alex were some of Meredith's friends who actually understood her in a way that feels foreign with Maggie and Amelia. A lot of the characters I want to see again are dead. I like when they bring Addison in, she makes Greys feel like itself again. I also wouldn't mind Tuck popping in for drama sake lol.
The show was really good, very impactful, when it first started and I think that with time some things got a little soapy, repetitive, and also a little unbelievable.
Meredith having one half-sister when her father started another family after the demise of her parents relationship was one thing but when Meredith went away and they coincided her surprise pregnancy with memories of her mother's "surprise pregnancy" and shoehorned in Maggie I was like...huh. I think at the time when I watched it I was still so emotionally caught up in Derek's death that I didn't really critique the story the way I normally would've.
Also I liked some of the one-off-what-if episodes, like the alternate reality where Meredith was engaged to Alex and she was all peppy and he was cheating behind her back with Izzy and Addison was pregnant and still married to Derek but probably pregnant with Mark's baby, that was fun. A kind of jump-the shark moment was the musical episode. It wasn't bad, but like shows like the Magicians and Buffy can get away with having musical episodes because their shows are based in the supernatural. When Grey's did it, especially after the major car wreck Callie and Arizona got in it undercut this extremely serious and dramatic plot so they could start singing...
Now I feel like everyone is falling in love with their good friends, fighting and critiquing whether they should be together at all even when they seem happy. They wrote some of the stories into oblivion and I swear after answering an ask a few weeks ago about my favorite ships I realized Grey's has had an ongoing trope with doctors and patients being in relationships. Henry and Teddy, Izzy and Denny, Stephanie and Kyle, Alex and Rebecca/Ava etc.
I would love it if they finished the show off with everyone actually happy, moving towards happiness and fulfillment. That would be a nice change of pace!

hurricane
A/N: shoutout to everyone that sent me song recs I'm feeling hella inspired and I’m gonna keep them in my inbox to come back to for future one shots! <3 credit to the anon that sent me this song...i wrote this so fast in my head and now it’s here! This is pretty amelia-centric but there’s a hint of amelink in here too, so hope u enjoy!
TW: implied drug use
also this is for @wordsxstars bc chloe ur my angst buddy forever !!
_______
I’m the violence in the pouring rain
I’m a hurricane
Come and fade me
Come and fade me
I’m a hurricane
_______
It rained the day she was born. Like really rained. It was the kind of torrential downpour that turned the whole sky a threateningly dark mix of indigo and grey.
Her Mother hadn’t planned for it. Hadn’t considered the impact that the weather would play on her child’s entrance into the world.
And she’d felt a lighthearted resentment towards this child, for deciding to push her way out at such an inconvenient time.
Because they’d sat in traffic.
Full of panic.
In the middle of a city-wide weather emergency.
“Leave it to baby number five,” her Mother had breathed through a contraction, hands gripping tightly to the cushions of the passenger seat. “To be born….during….a hurricane.”
“This hasn’t been classified as a hurricane yet, Carolyn-”
The glare she’d given her husband was enough to shut him up as she exhaled through the pressure of her contractions.
And she’d gripped the edges of the seat even tighter.
//
The same way Amelia does now, 18 years later.
Her fingers grip the edges of the seat, and her fingernails scratch over the fabric lightly, as she stares out the passenger side window.
It’s raining out. Not a downpour or anything. But steadily enough to trigger that feeling. That feeling that’s uncertain and nostalgic at the same time. Two practically opposite notions that crash together like the thunder that’s threatening the sky.
She hears Derek clear his throat, and her gaze snaps to his just in time.
Just in time for her to witness her brother’s eyes dart from her tightly-wound fingers to the road ahead as he drives.
She quickly moves her hands, on instinct. Burying them in her lap instead. There’s an overly-positive inflection to her brother’s tone as he speaks out into the space between them.
“I was nervous, too,” he laughs a bit under his breath, like he’s recalling a specific memory. “When I went away to school.”
“I’m not nervous.”
Disbelief flashes quickly across his face, but then he replaces it with something more soft. Like he’s deciding to give his younger sister the benefit of the doubt. Like he’s actually letting her have this one.
“Well, then….I’m impressed.”
Amelia rolls her eyes. And then she shivers involuntarily.
There’s something about being in an air-conditioned car, protected from the heat of the storm outside. It causes chills to rise through her body, despite it being the end of August. She turns in her seat, reaching towards the back of the car, to where all of her belongings are packed. Pulling out a crocheted blanket, she twists forward in her seat again and covers her bare legs with it.
She stares at the road ahead, finding patterns in the wet pavement, before she tentatively opens the conversation back up.
“Was Mom with you?” She utters the question, and she doesn’t let herself look in Derek’s direction. “Was Mom there to drop you off at college?”
It’s not until after she voices the question, that she realizes. Realizes that’s the thing that’s potentially been bothering her.
Derek sighs. And his hands grip the steering wheel a little tighter.
“She was.”
Amelia nods.
This answer doesn’t surprise her. And it doesn’t hurt either. It’s mostly just numb acceptance at this point.
She finally turns to him, and she almost doesn’t recognize herself in her next question.
“It’s because I look like him, right?”
It’s the first time she’s comprehended it out loud. The weight of it hits her like a ton of bricks. The fact that it all comes back to that.
“Who?”
Amelia gives him an incredulous stare, her mouth forming in a tight line. It amplifies her refusal to feed into Derek’s decided lack of wit.
Because he knows what she’s asking.
And Derek knows that Amelia knows that.
Amelia refuses to blink. She lets her eyes become unfocused as she stubbornly holds her gaze.
Until Derek eventually nods, giving up.
“Amelia….” He sighs. “You look like me.” He turns briefly in her direction, like he’s hoping her stare will have faltered slightly at his explanation so far. But it hasn’t. She’s relentless sometimes.
He exhales a bit shakily before he continues, eyes shifting back to the road.
“You look like me….and you look like Dad, too.”
Amelia finally lets herself blink at that. Relief floods her dry eyes and her mind, too.
She turns back to the window, focusing instead on the world around them. Her eyes land on two particular raindrops against the window. And she smiles slightly as she watches them drop down towards the ledge. Like it’s a race to see which raindrop finishes first. Which raindrop will dip first into the crack of the window pane, where it’ll disappear forever.
//
It’s a game she played as a child, too.
She loved to watch the raindrops race against the plastic walls of her playhouse. In the quiet corner of her vast backyard.
It had rained on the day of her 6th birthday party. And Amelia had almost been glad for that.
Her Mother had talked it up the entire week.
“Saturday is Amy’s birthday!”
“Saturday is all about Amy!”
But it felt false to Amelia, even as a 6-year-old.
The forced element of the celebration. And the way her Mother had demanded her siblings participate, too.
But the party was cancelled. And Amelia instead found herself in her favorite place to be during a rainstorm. Surrounded by the yellow walls of her plastic playhouse.
Derek had found her that day. A smile playing at his lips as he ducked his wet head of hair into the window of her little hideaway.
“Whatcha thinkin about, Amy?”
//
“What are you thinking about?”
Amelia quickly shakes from her daze, abandoning the slight pride she’d just felt at her choice of raindrop winning the race against the car window.
She turns to Derek, and she even smiles a bit in his direction.
“I’m thinking about….starting over.”
“Starting over?!” Derek gives her one of his classic smiles. There’s an element of surprise to it, that lands in his eyes. But ultimately it’s laced with excitement, through and through. “Starting over is good.”
Amelia beams at him. It starts off small but she can feel the way it grows on her face. It’s the kind of grin that makes her cheeks dimple.
Derek shakes his head, laughing under his breath as he faces the road again.
“You know….no one wants you to start completely over, Amy.”
She raises her eyebrows at this, her grin transforming into more of a doubtful smirk at her brother’s words.
“Well I, for one, don’t want you to change.”
Amelia exhales a slight chuckle.
“I’ll try not to get rid of the good parts,” she mutters.
Derek is focused on the road in front of them, so all Amelia can really decipher, is his side profile. But she can see it. The hint of glassiness in his grey-blue orbs.
Silence falls between them, and Amelia feels a tightness form within her own throat. She attempts to clear it, tries to alleviate what the moment is turning out to be. But then Derek starts speaking again in a low tone, and the tightness spreads itself further.
“Dad would be so proud of you, you know.”
Amelia smiles tightly.
She only half believes that statement.
Because truthfully, she has no idea how she got here. How she managed to make it this far anyway. That realization hits her hard and fast and suddenly she doesn’t care that her eyes are stinging the same way Derek’s were a moment ago.
“I wish I remembered him better,” she admits, and her voice is notably thin.
Derek turns to her, his eyes filled with something Amelia can’t quite place.
“I feel like….” She continues, ignoring the way her voice wavers. “My idea of him comes from the pictures I’ve seen? If that makes sense? And I don’t have the actual memories anymore….I don’t….I wish I remembered what he was really like, you know? His voice, his mannerisms, everything-”
“I know what you mean.”
They exit the freeway, the car slowing at a stoplight as they enter the college town.
“You’re so like him in so many ways, Amelia.” Derek says it in a whispered tone, as they turn onto the main road. Like the comprehension is overwhelming to even him. “So….just like you said….don’t get rid of the good parts, okay?”
Amelia lets herself smile as she turns away from him, eyes scanning the surroundings of the town that will be her new home. The rain has died down significantly, and Amelia questions whether that’s an accurate observation, or if it’s just that they’re driving at a slower speed now.
“Okay,” she eventually responds.
//
“Are you okay?”
The question had come from Derek.
“Jesus Christ, you scared me,” Amelia had practically gasped upon slipping through the front door. She thought she’d been inconspicuous.
Derek stared at her expectantly.
“I’m fine,” she muttered, but she couldn’t stop her teeth from chattering.
“It’s pouring out. Did you walk?” There’d been criticism in his voice.
“You’d be more upset if I said I drove, right?”
“Amy.”
“Derek.”
They’d been at a standoff. In the middle of the entryway. Both of them seemingly unphased by the mix of mud and water that tracked all over their Mother’s favorite area rug.
Derek sighed. And Amelia stared at the floor. Unable to make eye contact, too aware that her eyes were hinted red and full of haze.
“Why didn’t you call me for a ride?”
“I didn’t know you’d still be here.” Her reply sounded bitter. But maybe it had just been the tightness in her jaw, the pressure from fighting off the wet and the cold.
There was a moment of stunned silence.
“You missed Dad’s birthday dinner.” Derek’s tone had been accusatory again.
“Dad missed it, too.”
“Amelia-”
She’d cut Derek off with a bizarrely edged laugh.
Their Dad’s birthday dinner. They’d celebrate every year as a family. They’d sit down and have dinner together. And Amelia ultimately despised it. Mostly because they’d started grouping it together with her own birthday celebration. Her birthday followed a week after their Dad’s. And it just served as another reminder. Another reason for displaced resentment.
Amelia bit down on her laugh, stunned. She’d be turning 16 the following week.
“Amelia.” He said it again, this time more cautionary.
She finally looked at him. And she could see genuine concern in his expression.
“Are you okay?” He asked for a second time.
All Amelia could do was nod.
“Are you on your way out?” She whispered the question.
And then it was Derek’s turn to nod.
“I just wanted to say goodbye before I took back off to school,” he explained. “And I wanted to tell you happy birthday.”
Amelia smirked coldly at him, and finally started moving towards the stairs.
“Bye, Derek.”
//
2 years later and they’ve yet to improve this part.
It’s a rushed goodbye. Like it usually is for them. They don’t do goodbyes very well. Maybe that had something to do with shared past experiences.
Derek helps her set up her dorm room and when there’s nothing left to do, a knowing shift occurs in the atmosphere.
He pulls his hands out of his pockets, and forces a smile on his face. And when he pulls her into a tight hug, it takes Amelia a moment to reciprocate the gesture.
But Derek just squeezes her tighter until she does.
“You’re going to love it here, Amy,” he mumbles, before pulling away.
And Amelia just nods. Not able to find her words.
Because they’re bad at goodbyes. Which Derek knows. So he lets her off the hook, backs out of the small room with one last glance in her direction.
And Amelia watches him go.
//
Amelia doesn’t love it here, right away.
She tries to. She really does.
She sits in the shared common areas and convinces herself that maybe she’ll step up and talk to someone today.
It’s strange. She’s an outgoing person. She could be the life of the party when she really wanted to. But, she sits now, textbooks open in front of her, glancing around the library at fellow students. And she feels worlds beyond them. She questions to herself how she can even feel years beyond people her own age.
And that’s the self-inquiry that ruins her plan. She gets way too inside her own head and it hinders any chance she has at trying today.
Instead she gets up, shoving her books into her bag and walking purposefully to the exit.
It’s when she reaches her dorm, that the rain starts. She can smell it first. The distinct way the air changes when it’s about to rain. It feels humid and thick and her skin starts to feel sticky before the cold front lightly passes over her, and it provides relief.
The sky gets dark and it starts to sprinkle, just as she climbs the steps of her building.
As she enters her room, a dark cloud of restlessness storms her mind. Because she doesn’t know what her next move is. What her plan is for the rest of the day.
She looks around the small room, eyes catching on a piece of paper that’s been slipped under her door.
She picks it up, and when she reads the words on the flyer, she wants to laugh to herself. Because it simply lists an address for a party later tonight. And she’s laughing because, is this really how college works?
She decides there’s no way she’s going to the party.
//
After 2 hours of staring at the ugly off-white paneling of her dorm room ceiling, Amelia sits up in bed.
Because there’s a hint of it. A fleeting thought. A question that flashes through her mind almost too quickly to even divulge in.
But it’s there. The question of ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’
It’s enough to make her get out of bed. Which is confusing, to say the least. Because she hadn’t anticipated spending her evening this way. But now she’s pulling open her dresser drawers, trying to find something to wear. And she’s glancing at herself in the mirror, reaching for her makeup bag at the same time.
The last thing she remembers thinking, when she exits her dorm room is, what’s the worst that could happen?
//
The worst that could happen, happens almost right away.
It takes place in the form of ‘jungle juice.’
“It’s called jungle juice!”
Amelia stares blankly at the frat boy in front of her. She’s standing way too close to the bouncing speakers and the music is way too loud.
“What?!”
“Jungle juice!” He yells again, “Basically everyone brings a fifth of something and it all gets poured in there! It’s disgusting, but it makes for a dangerous concoction! Want me to grab you a cup?”
Amelia shakes her head. She doesn’t know what she was thinking.
Well, that’s not entirely true. She was thinking that she had to at least try. Give a shot at relating to people her age.
She surveys the boy in front of her. He’s attractive. Jet black hair, green eyes and even a slightly alternative vibe to him. It surprises Amelia, considering she’s in a frat house. He seems unexpected. And maybe her type. She’d probably go for him, if she wasn’t currently so inside her own head about it.
She feels her nails dig lightly into the palms of her hands as she drops her arms to the side, and she immediately catches herself. She exhales, trying to relax.
“I’ll grab something else, probably!” she yells back to the boy patiently standing in front of her.
Patiently, she thinks. Because she’s already a step ahead of him, labeling him, and she knows she’s someone that requires patience in events like these.
She shifts her eyes away from him, instead looking to the tiny window in the corner of the crowded room. It’s raining outside. Drops of condensation race against the glass in a familiar motion.
A feeling swells in her chest that’s hard to ignore. There’s a strong desire to escape her current environment and it practically makes her want to crawl out of her skin.
“I’m not supposed to be here!” She shouts over the music, turning back to the conversation.
“Huh?!”
“It’s raining!” She’s an octave louder this time.
“Yeah! It’s good we’re inside, right?!”
Amelia shakes her head, stepping away. Ignoring the confusion on the boy’s face, she turns on her heels, pushing through the crowd until she can find an exit. When she finally makes it out onto the less crowded porch, she lets out a huge exhale.
She keeps waking. The sun is setting, and the impending storm makes the sky a glorious shade of violet.
The rain pelts her skin as she walks hastily through the campus and although it provides relief, there’s also a sense of something else. It’s almost yearning. Or maybe homesickness. But it doesn’t make sense, because she’s never craved home before.
She thinks she’s crying. She can’t really tell. It’s hard to separate the rain from any potential saltiness that threatens her cheeks. The only thing that gives her away is her labored breathing.
She’s overwhelmed. And for once in her life she wishes Derek were here. He’d know the right thing to say.
Her thoughts are interrupted when a figure passes her on her left. It’s sudden. She doesn’t anticipate it and she doesn’t hear anyone approach, mostly because her thoughts are so loud and there’s thunder starting to rumble through the sky.
“Fuck,” she gasps, hand clutching her chest as the stranger passes her.
He’s running, but he slows his jog after she voices her alarm.
He turns around, taking in Amelia’s startled expression.
“Oh, sorry!” His own surprised guise shifts quickly to one of concern, though.
“Are you okay?” He asks, voice raised to compensate for the rain as he calls out to her.
Amelia nods.
“You just scared me, is all,” she shrugs.
He looks her up and down, but Amelia doesn’t even feel scrutinized by it.
He steps towards her. And Amelia finds her voice.
“Out for a run?” She’s surprised by her own curiosity.
He shakes his head as he approaches. “I was walking back from the library,” he points to the sky, in an obvious gesture. “And then it started raining….and I started running….”
Amelia feels a smile break across her face, the dimpled kind. Because there’s something about the way he looks up at the sky while he explains himself, that amuses her.
He turns to her, and he has a wide grin on his face as he catches his breath from running. Not wide in the way that he’s smiling hugely, or anything. But Amelia can tell that his typical smile just happens to stretch that far. It makes her own smile further.
“You heading to north hall?”
Amelia nods.
“I live there, too!” He exclaims. “Food sucks but we have the biggest closets out of all the dorms on the entire campus.”
Amelia raises her eyebrows at this.
“Am I….bothering you?” His grin quickly fades. “God, I didn’t mean to just start….walking with you. Sorry, shit. You must think I’m some sort of-”
“You can walk with me,” she bites down on another smile. Because it’s the most she’s smiled in weeks and it feels foreign to her. “It’s fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah,” she peeks sideways at him. “As long as we don’t have to start running,” she adds with a laugh.
His smile returns. And they keep waking. The rain starts to die down a bit, but Amelia questions whether she’s imagined that. She can see the rain. And maybe she can hear it, too. But she can’t really feel it. Her focus has shifted.
“I’m Amelia, by the way.”
“Amelia?” He repeats her name, and there’s a spark of interest in his inflection, like he’s really doing his best to store that information.
She nods.
They reach north hall. The rain has come to a complete halt, and Amelia thinks it would almost feel sunny, if the sun hadn’t already set.
“It’s nice to meet you, Amelia. I’m Link.”

Would you write a story about Addison, Henry and Jake visiting Amelia for a few days and Ellis or Bailey or Zola being really jealous of Henry and that he calls her Aunty Amelia because she's their aunt and not his.
Homage
a/n: hi! thank you for the prompt and I hope you enjoy this!
---------------
"Who the hell is knocking on our door at 9 AM?" Amelia groaned, shifting her son onto her other hip. "Are your parents coming to visit again?" Link shrugged and pushed past her gently, rubbing his tired eyes as he opened the door and pulled on a mask.
"Hello-oh," Link's eyebrows rose, and Amelia paused from in the kitchen.
"Who is it?" She waited for a minute, pouring cereal into a bowl and placing it in front of Ellis at the table. "Elle, go grab the milk," she muttered, rushing towards the door.
"Amelia!" Her eyes widened at the familiar face in the doorway, and before she could think, she was rushing towards Addison for a hug.
"Addie, what the hell are you doing here? Oh, crap," Amelia pulled away and grabbed a mask from the table by the door.
"We all got tested this morning, don't worry. I came to visit you! You can't just have a baby and not expect me to visit; god, he's so adorable!" The red-headed woman held her arms out and grabbed Scout, immediately pressing her nose to his head. "I miss having a baby; their heads smell so amazing." Link laughed softly and pulled his mask off.
"Oh, Addie, you haven't met Link yet," Amelia leaned into his body, wide grins across both of their faces as he wrapped his arm around her.
"We've met over the phone, Amy."
"Amelia."
"Right, sorry. I knew if I called, you would've said no, and we all needed a vacation." Addison bounced her nephew up and down, smiling as he grabbed at her necklace.
"Is someone else here? You said we all," Amelia muttered under her breath, stepping out onto the porch. "Jake!" She ran down the steps and into the driveway, grinning as she wrapped her arms around her friend's neck.
"It's good to see you, Amelia," he opened the door to reveal Amelia's godson, much bigger than the last time she'd seen him.
"Henry! You're so big, now!" She picked him up, placing a kiss on his cheek before setting him down.
"I'll be honest; I never thought I would see the day when Amelia Shepherd was chasing four kids around all day," Jake mused, taking his son's hand. Amelia grinned.
"Neither did I, if I'm honest." They walked back up to the porch, where Link and Jake shook each other's hands firmly, their partners both rolling their eyes at the sight of their seriousness. "Okay, are you done?" Amelia grabbed her boyfriend's arm. "There are three very impatient kids in that house, and we should probably get back in there." They led Addison, Jake, and Henry into the house, introducing each of them to the children. Eventually, Link and Jake led all of the children outside, leaving Addison and Amelia alone with the baby.
"I like him," Addison brought her mug of tea up to her lips, taking a sip slowly before continuing. "Link, he seems like the perfect guy. Awfully tall, though."
"He is. Both tall and perfect," Amelia grinned. "I'm waiting for Jake to come back in here and tell me what he thinks. He was always a little overprotective of who I was dating, so if he can get past Jake, everything's fine." The neurosurgeon lifted her son from his play mat, holding him close to her as she approached her sister again.
"He looks exactly like Derek when he was a baby."
"You think?" Addison nodded.
"Mhm. I spent far too much time in your mother's house panning through dusty photo albums and staring at photos of him as a baby to not see it." She set her mug down, holding her arms out. "Have you told your Mom?"
"I did. She said she'd come and visit after the pandemic is over, but I'm pretty sure that'll never happen," Amelia handed Scout to her sister, picking up her own cup of tea. "I'm fine with it. Link's parents are both great, and his Mom honestly treats me like the daughter she's never had, so I don't need my Mom to come out here and validate all of my life decisions."
"You want her here. I said the same thing for a while, telling myself I didn't need Bizzy to approve of anything, but it feels good to have the support." Amelia sighed, easing her empty mug into the kitchen sink.
"So, you just showed up here to therapist me? I would've told you to at least bring Violet for that."
"Amelia, I'm just saying. You've built this whole life for yourself, the perfect boyfriend, your own family, your dream job, and I know you haven't always been close with your biological family."
"Haven't ever been close," Amelia muttered.
"Still. That doesn't mean that you can't build relationships with them. Think about how spoiled Scout would get on every birthday and holiday; gifts from his grandparents, aunts, cousins, friends, parents, everyone." The neurosurgeon shrugged her shoulders and remained silent. "But, whatever happens, you know I'll be here for you, right?"
"You don't have to try and parent me anymore; you know that?" Addison began to pace around the kitchen space, bouncing Scout up and down to calm his light fussing.
"I still feel protective over you, Amelia. I haven't seen you in person in years, and we both know that talking over the phone is so much different than being able to see you. I'm going to be coming up here a lot more often now; I have Scout as an excuse to come and visit." Scout cooed at the sound of his name, placing his tiny hand on Addison's face. "He's way too adorable for me to see all of his life through a screen. I'll be coming up at least three times a year."
"You've gotta bring Henry every time, too," Amelia looked outside, where her boyfriend was chasing her godson around the yard. "And Jake. I missed all of you; maybe Link and I will start coming down to L.A. a few times a year. He'd love to go surfing."
"Mm, maybe you two should just move down there." Amelia rolled her eyes.
"Well, if Meredith doesn't get better, Link and I get custody of the kids, and I doubt we'd be moving if that happens."
"For whatever it's worth, you're doing an incredible job with all of them. Having a newborn is no joke, and you're parenting three other kids during a pandemic on top of that? Charlotte keeps saying it's your payback for teasing her about the triplets." The door opened, and Link walked through with Ellis on his back, her giggles causing everyone to smile.
"Someone took a nasty fall, but we thought it would be better with a juice box," he walked towards the fridge and opened it, leaning down so Ellis could grab a juice box from the refrigerator.
"Auntie Amelia?" She looked over to see Henry standing in the doorway. "Can Scout come outside to play with us?" Amelia grinned and took Scout from her sister, walking over to where Henry was standing.
"You have to be super gentle with him," she whispered, leading Henry back outside. "Why don't I give Scout to your Dad, and he can make sure that everyone's being safe, okay?" Henry nodded enthusiastically and ran over to his father, tugging at the leg of his pants as Jake took Scout. "If he fusses, just walk around. The movement calms him down."
"Are you all gonna come back outside or just pawn off all the children on me?" Amelia laughed and crossed her arms over her chest, watching as her son snuggled into Jake's body.
"I'll go get Addison and Link," she muttered, heading back over to the door and calling for them.
"Auntie Amelia? I have a question," Ellis whispered, holding her arms up to her aunt. Amelia lifted her and sat down at the picnic table.
"What is it, Elle?"
"Why does Henry call you Auntie Amelia? You're my Auntie Amelia, not his." She shook her head in amusement, brushing back some of Ellis' blonde hair.
"Well, Addison is my sister too, just like your Mom is, so I'm Henry's Auntie, too." Ellis pouted her lip out.
"But you love me more, right?"
"I love you all, Elle; I don't love one of you more than the other." Amelia began to braid her niece's hair as she spoke, Ellis' eyes falling to where Link was playing with Henry and Bailey. "You're my niece, and Henry is my nephew. Just like I'm your aunt, and Maggie is also your aunt. That doesn't mean that you love one of us more,"
"You're my favorite Auntie." Amelia laughed softly, biting her lip to hide the satisfaction she felt.
"Well, I don't have a favorite. I love all of you, but I'm excited to see Henry right now because I never get to see him. I get to see you every day, Elle." The brunette tied a hairband around her niece's hair and hugged the girl lightly before standing up. "Let's go play with them, okay?" Ellis took her hand, and they walked over to the playscape, where Ellis quickly scampered up the ladder to the top of the structure. "How long are you staying?" She asked Jake as he paced around the lawn, bouncing Scout up and down.
"We're up here for a week. Figured we'd spend some time with you, go up to Mount Rainier, just do anything to give Henry a change of scenery." He moved to stand next to Amelia. "I like Link. He seems good, more relaxed than I expected for someone you'd be dating." Her mouth fell open before quickly turning up into a smirk.
"Hey, I haven't managed to corrupt him yet. I'm sure next time you come to visit, he’ll be a pessimist."
"Are you happy? Because last time I saw you, this was the life you didn't want to live. Every time someone brought out a baby, you'd practically gag and complain about women and babies."
"You know, I never thought I wanted this, but honestly? I wouldn't trade it for anything." She looked over at her son, his bright blue eyes staring back at her. "I'm happy, Jake. I really am."

Already Gone
hello! here’s a bit of an angsty fic :)
The bright red and blue lights were what had woken her up.
It wasn’t the sound of the dull, repetitive knocking on the front door. It wasn’t the sound of the harsh rain hitting the windows. It wasn’t the sound of the home phone ringing from the kitchen. It wasn’t the sound of Scout’s cries from his bedroom.
The two lights that shone in the worst way were what had woken her up.
As she sat up in bed, she felt a large lump in her throat that was impossible to swallow. She looked over at Link’s side of the bed, and that was when she realized.
She realized she hadn’t felt him wrap his arms around her like he does every night. She realized the hallway light she always left on for him to come home to was still shining. She realized he was supposed to be home hours ago.
The knocking persisted as she walked to Scout’s room and picked him up from his race-car bed.
“You’re okay,” she soothed. Scout rested his head on her shoulder, and they both watched as the red and blue lights lit up every inch of the house.
As she approached the front door, she felt nothing except her heart beating in her chest.
As she approached the front door, she realized the last time she had felt that feeling of nothingness was when Derek died.
She told herself she never wanted to experience that feeling again.
She told herself she wouldn’t be able to handle that feeling again.
“Are you Amelia Shepherd?” the police officer asked. She winced at the brightness of the lights. She didn’t remember them being that bright when Ryan died.
“I am,” she replied. Her voice sounded as dull as the knocking on the door— the lump in her throat was unable to be ignored.
“Your husband was involved in a car accident,” the officer said. He continued to talk, but she heard nothing else. She just watched as his mouth moved like that of a puppet.
“Ma’am?” he asked, “Do you have somebody you can call to watch your son?”
She looked at him, then at the officer that stood to his left. She had just noticed he was there.
She went to her bedroom and retrieved her cellphone. There, she sat down with Scout.
“Amelia?” Maggie's voice was groggy in a way that was clear she had just woken up. Though, who wouldn’t be sleeping then? Only doctors, policemen, dispatchers, and those who had just received news that their loved one is dying.
“Maggie,” she said. The lump in her throat made it difficult for any further words to come out.
“Amelia? What’s wrong?” Maggie asked.
“I need you to watch Scout,” she replied, the numbness in her voice was evident.
“Are you okay?” Maggie questioned.
“Please come over,” she said before hanging up the phone.
She knew she had to hang up before Maggie asked anything else. She knew she couldn’t fathom hearing her sister ask if Link was okay. She knew she wouldn’t be able to answer that question without completely falling apart.
She knew she couldn’t do that just yet— she had Scout.
She set her phone down and stared at the photo that sat on top of her bedside table. They had just taken it two weeks earlier— she remembered Link begging her for a picture together. She remembered hating the way she looked that night. She remembered eventually giving in. Link’s eyes were lit up with happiness in such a way that, although she hated that photo of herself, she framed it.
She framed it because Link had never looked so happy.
“Ma’am?” the officer gently knocked on her open bedroom door, snapping her out of her thoughts. She hadn’t realized almost twelve minutes had gone by and Maggie had arrived.
“Amelia,” Maggie said before rushing towards her, falling to her knees. She assumed the officers had told Maggie everything. She assumed they wouldn’t make her repeat the details that she could barely remember herself.
Maggie held Scout on her hip and watched as the officer helped her sister stand. She watched as she was escorted out of the bedroom, out of the house, and into the police car.
She watched as Amelia left— on her way to say goodbye to her person.
At the hospital, she saw familiar faces that all held the same look. It was the same look that people at funerals have when they tell you ‘he’s in a better place’ or ‘you have a guardian angel now’— it was the same bullshit look that she had seen too many times before.
“I’ll give you some time,” she heard a voice say from behind her. She couldn’t make out who had said it, and she couldn’t turn to see. She couldn’t focus her attention on anything but Link laying in the hospital bed.
His face looked so much different from the photo on her bedside table. He was no longer his natural tanned color. His usual pale blue eyes were now shut. He didn’t look like he was sleeping— he looked like he was dying.
And he was.
She slowly sat down in a chair someone had moved in for her.
“Hi, gorgeous,” she said. She had finally swallowed the lump in her throat.
“The bed was cold tonight,” she added.
She bit the inside of her cheek as she placed his hand into hers. The ticking of the wall’s clock echoed in her head.
“Don’t leave me just yet, Atticus,” she whispered. She gently brushed his bruised cheek with the back of her hand.
It was ironic, really. He had always told his friends he would wake up in the middle of the night to drive them home from the bars. He had always told his friends he would rather wake up at an ungodly hour to drive them home than to see their obituary on the news the next day. He had always told them not to drink and drive.
And they didn’t.
He would pick them up at nine o’clock, twelve o’clock, four o’clock. He would always pick them up. And after his 48 hour shift, he received a text from a drunken Alex Karev who had asked him for a ride home. He thought nothing of it— of course he would drive Alex home.
He just didn’t think he would get hit by a drunk driver on the way to the bar.
“Don’t leave me just yet, okay?” she repeated. “We have to see that movie tomorrow, remember? The movie I thought looked stupid. The one you kept begging me to see. We have to see it tomorrow, gorgeous.”
She listened as the ticking of the clock grew louder, drowning out the sounds of his heart monitor.
“We have so much more to do,” she said softly.
She noticed the dull grey hospital room had turned blurry, then realized she had been holding her tears back for too long. She realized her tears were trying so hard to escape that they had filled her eyes to the brim.
Just then, Meredith Grey slowly walked into the room.
“He’s dying,” Amelia stated without looking at her, “And there isn’t anything I can do to stop it.”
“Amelia,” Meredith began. “It’s okay,” Amelia cut her off, “You don’t have to say anything. I would say this is how you felt when Derek died, but I feel nothing at all. I don’t know how to explain what I feel, because all I feel is nothing. Link is the only person who made made me feel something, Meredith. He is my best friend— was, I mean. He was my best friend and now he’s gone. He’s gone because he was going to pick up his friend. He was going to pick up his drunk friend so that his friend didn’t drink and drive. He was going to pick up his friend, and then he got hit by a drunk driver. Isn’t that hilarious?”
Meredith stood by the end of the hospital bed and watched as Amelia took a shaky breath.
“It’s hilarious, Meredith. It’s hilarious that he saves lives for a living but God decided to take life away from him. It’s hilarious that every man I’ve ever loved has died. It’s hilarious that we had plans to see a ridiculous movie tomorrow, and now I have two tickets for a movie I didn’t want to see in the first place. It’s hilarious that if he could hear me right now, if he could see me, he would tell me that it’s okay. He would tell me to take a deep breath, and to not worry about him. He would tell me I will do just fine without him by my side everyday.
But that’s the thing. I don’t want to live life without him by my side everyday. I don’t want to live in a world that he doesn’t live in. But I have to, because I know you came in here to take him off the ventilator,” she concluded.
“I can give you more time, Amelia,” Meredith said. “No,” Amelia shook her head. “I don’t need more time. He’s already gone— this is just his body.”
Meredith sighed as she walked towards the monitor.
Amelia watched as she unplugged his ventilator, then turned off the heart monitor that soon before emitted a dull, monotonous beep. It was almost as dull as the knock she had heard on the front door just an hour earlier.
Amelia watched as Link took his last breath. She watched as the last, remaining bit of life inside him escaped. She watched as her favorite person disappeared.
She stood up and gently kissed the top of his head.
“Take care of Christopher for me,” she whispered before leaving the hospital room.

Amelia Shepherd
First impression: goddamn badass (I was biased, as the first episode I saw of her was like, season 14, and she was cool as hell then)
Impression now: my favourite grey's anatomy character. like ever.
Favorite moment: "only freaking superheros" or when she had the intervention for her drug addiction on Private Practice because holy shit can caterina scorsone act
Idea for a story: amelia reflecting on the 3 loves of her life: ryan, owen and link (james we don't care about, sorry)
Unpopular opinion: amelia had every right to want to say goodbye to derek and mer should have called the shepherds (at least derek's mom and amelia, the other sisters suck so it's fine). the way amelia handled derek's death by screaming at mer wasn't great but her emotions were completely valid imo
Favorite relationship: amelink if we're talking romantic, and (don't kill me) but I also like omelia for their friendship.
Favorite headcanon: amelia tells scout one day about his big brother and scout then asks for stories about him. amelia makes stuff up that christopher and scout would've done together and essentially his big brother helps him fall asleep

Who are your favourite characters? Least favourite? I love Addison, Cristina and Meredith. And I’m really liking Lexi. I’ve just finished season 4 so my merder shipper heart is SINGING.
Based on spoilers Ive accidentally read over time I’ll probably only watch the first 10 seasons lol.
Thank you for talking greys with me!! :)
My favorites are similar to yours. Meredith and Cristina, of course. Twisted sisters for lifeeee! Also Lexi, Addison, April (who you haven't met yet), Callie, and Arizona (she'll pop up soon).
My favorite male characters are Derek, Mark - McDreamy and McSteamy are a given, come on - Jackson, and George. Alex was a real ass in the beginning of the series and I didn't care for him but he really evolves over the course of time and grew on me. I was a big Dr. Burke stan until the actor got himself booted off the show. I also will always have a HUGE soft spot for Denny Duquette. (Blame Jeffrey Dean Morgan's boundless charm and those goddamn dimples!) The s2 finale destroys me every time I rewatch it. I still cannot listen to "Chasing Cars" without crying. It's a whole thing.
Also--*conjures a protection circle for Nathan Riggs* I really love his character. He was a good addition, interesting too, and nobody can convince me otherwise!
As for characters I don't particularly care for I have to say that I've always been 'meh' where Owen is concerned. Same goes for Amelia. Though, I did like her better on Private Practice. Erica Hahn didn't do anything for me as a viewer, either. And I've never warmed to Catherine Avery. Ever. I sort of think she's the worst, tbh. 😆
As the seasons went along, I didn't like many of the newer recurring characters the show added but I don't want to mention them by name/season and prejudice you against them unnecessarily.
It'd probably be better for your emotional health to stop watching after s10, but it's hard to stop once you're invested. Trust me, I get it haha.
And thank YOU for talking with me about Grey's! xx
