Etymology of the Martell and Sand’s Names
Doran, Dorea: Doran is an Irish and Gaelic name that means "fist, stranger, exile." It could also be an invented masculine version of the name Dora, which derivated from the Greek word doron (gift, freely given, without cost). Dorea was probably named after him.
Mellario: her name is an actual Latin adjective derivated from the word mellarius (of honey, related to honey, beekeeper).
Arianne: a variation of Ariana, which itself is a latinized version of the Greek name Ariadne (most holy). In Greek mythology Ariadne was the granddaughter of the sun god Helios, helped Theseus escape the labyrinth by giving him thread and married Dionysus, the god of grape-harvest, winemaking, orchards and fruit, fertility and festivity.
Quentyn: misspelling of Quentin, a French name derivated from the Latin name Quintinus (the fifth).
Trystane: misspelling of Trystan, a Welsh name that derivated from the French word triste (sad, sorrowful).
Elia: probably after the sun god Helios in Greek mythology or a shortening of the Late Latin name Aeliāna, the feminine form of Aeliānus (of the sun). It could also be a shortening of the Hebrew name Eliana (my God answered me, God answered my prayer) or a misspelling of the Old German name Ellia (other, foreign).
Oberyn, Obara, Obella: Oberyn is probably a misspelling of Oberon, the fairy king from from A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. The name Oberon is derived from the Old High German name Alberich, composed by the words alb (elf) and rih (ruler, king). Obara is probably named after him, unless she’s named after obara, the Slovene meat and vegetable stew that was usually prepared for celebrations. Same with Obella, unless her name is a misspelling of Abella, which comes from the Hebrew name Abel (breath, vapor).
Ellaria: could be a misspelling of the Hebrew name Elliora (God is my light) or the Old English name Ellerey or Elleree (alder tree).
Nymeria: probably an invented name compounded by the Greek word nymphe (young woman, bride, young wife) and the Greek name Maria, which derivated from the Roman surname Marius and could come from Mars the war god, maris (male) or mare (sea). Maria could also derivate from the Hebrew name Myriam (rebellious) which once was mistranslated to Latin as Maryam (drop of the sea). It could also be a misspelling of the Greek name Nereides (clear, unmistakable, true) which is also the patronymic of fifty sea nymphs that accompany Poseidon, god of the sea, and often help sailors in Greek mythology. It could also be delivered from the Arabic noun nimer (tiger) but I don't think it very likely.
Tyene: could be a misspelling of Tine or Tinah, both variations of Tina, which itself derivated from the shortened version of Latin female names like Bettina (diminutive of Elizabeth (God is my oath, God’s promise), Christina (follower of Christ), Constantina (constant, steadfast), Martina (follower of Mars) or Valentina (strong, healthy). It could also be a misspelling of thyme or of the Spanish verb tiene (he/she has).
Sarella: probably a misspelling of Sarah, an Hebrew name derived from the word sar (chief, ruler, prince), with the female suffix ella added at the end.
Loreza: either a misspelling of Lorenza or Lorena, both derivated from the Latin surname Laurentius which derivated from the noun laurus (laurel, laurel tree).

Mellario of Norvos, the estranged wife of Doran Martell and the mother of his children; Aianne, Quentyn and Trystane - Reem Acra Resort 2023
Despite quickly falling in love with the ruling Prince of Dorne, Mellario’s marriage was not a happy one. She could not get used to westerosi vustoms, especially fostering children. When Prince Doran sent their first son Quentyn to Huuse Yronwood as ward, she protested but wasn’t listened to. Again, when Doran wished to foster Arianne in Tyrosh, Mellario threatened to take her own life if another one of her children is taken away from her. This time Doran relented, and Arianne grew up in Dorne. Mellario evetually returned to Norvos.

𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐒 ... HERS; VARIOUS + verse tags
Tumblr media
𝐋𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨, 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞, 𝐈.
After the time she has arrived in Dorne with her lover, Prince Doran Martell, their arrival from Norvos in 269AC (and prior to her departure in 290AC; whereupon she would have had her three children; Princess Arianne, Prince Quentyn, and Prince Trystane Martell.) Whilst she and Doran's relationship started off positively, a whirlwind romance, and wedded for love... cracks began to form early on between the two; often due to culture clashes. It would be said that half of their marriage, Mellario and Doran spent arguing with each other.. Regardless, Mellario remains the Princess-Consort of Dorne whilst Doran reigns.
Tumblr media
𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐤, 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐮, 𝐈.
Mellario is a wealthy beauty, a Norvoshi noblewoman who has extended her existing wealth through the creation, and trade, of stunning silks, silk tapestries, and eventually jewellery. She owns a second property in Pentos, which is a large, white stone manse with a sprawling view of the sea that she vacations at frequently. Mellario travels on occasion to Westeros to visit removed kin who have relocated to the region of Dorne. As a result of these visits, she has also expanded her business network. Though Norvos is involved in trade with Lorath, they rarely trade with the Seven Kingdoms; giving Mellario a particular advantage over the market.   This verse is applicable to all other ASOIAF timelines.
Tumblr media
𝐀 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐲, 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐮, 𝐈.
Mellario did come across the sea intending to wed the Prince of Dorne, but Doran and she wouldn't remain lovers for long. He subsequently fell in love with, and wed, the noble Norvishi handmaiden who was at the side of Mellario. Consequently, she feuded bitterly with Doran and, out of spite, remained in Dorne. Mellario purchased land, constructed her own manse, and eventually became sexually involved, as well as friends, with Prince Oberyn Martell; also out of spite and hedonism. Mellario will occasionally travel to the Free Cities and converses frequently with her family in Norvos. In Westeros she also assists as an envoy and representative, when needed, for her siblings in their silk trading business.     This AU is set in post-Robert's Rebelion Era.

4 for Sansa I Part V
Hi anon! I was kinda confused, I’m guessing you’re referring to this ask prompt from a couple days ago?
4. Whose is your least favorite character for this chapter/fic?
To be honest, I’m not sure I have a least favorite character for Sansa I? Like, Septon Ulf is a bit of a fanatic, and Mellario hits poor Rosamund, but they’re both interesting characters to write, who think they are very reasonable from their own perspective?
Let’s do a deep dive!
Mellario
In canon, we know Mellario is a noble of Norvos, a slaver city. She's short, and her marriage with Doran curdled at some point after Trystane's birth. In canon, this is attributed to her fury over Doran sending away Quentyn to foster, and then trying to send Arianne away too. GRRM has also said in an interview that Doran/Mellario started as a "oooh, sexy foreigner" sort of love match, but couldn't stand the test of time and cultural differences.
I think that's a solid basis for a character, although I definitely side-eye Doran for casually marrying a member of slaver nobility. We get zero about Mellario's views on slavery, so I'm not comfy just handwaving her as a Grimke sister type, especially as she brought Areo Hotah from Norvos as a slave.
(...side note, is Areo still a slave??? Does Doran pay him wages??? Uhm....)
Anyway, Mellario should NOT have hit Rosamund, but I thought it was a very understandable, if violent and shitty, reaction from a terrified, furious mother, especially given she was separated from her children for years during the canon era.
Septon Ulf
Oh, this guy. Dragonstone's smallfolk had a VERY WEIRD time during the WotFK in canon! Stannis takes up with a fire witch, who he allows to burn the sept of Dragonstone as a sacrifice to R'hllor. Several nobles are killed defending the sept, or burned later by Selyse and Melisandre. Davos mentions in passing that the smallfolk briefly converted to R'hllorism, then went back to the Seven.
Uhhh... that's a pretty huge deal? Medieval people took religion VERY seriously! The destruction of septs would have been a HUGE deal! So, I sat and thought, and realized that there were probably a decent number of smallfolk on Dragonstone who blamed Stannis's fall on Melisandre and her red god, who lured him away from the Seven. But given that the smallfolk also converted to R'hllor... well. Better prove their true devotion to the Seven by disassociating as much as possible from anything that even vaguely goes against the Seven or reminds them of Melisandre.
I don't have a full backstory in my head for Septon Ulf, but he was definitely born on Dragonstone, and a septon there for quite a while. Ulf's faith wavered during the Melisandre era; he either temporarily gave up the Seven and worshipped R'hllor, or remained silent rather than risk his skin by opposing Melisandre. Either way, ever since she left, Ulf has been DETERMINED to overcorrect by being super mega pious, to the point of listening to the similarly fervent members of his flock who believe violent action is necessary to cleanse their former sin.

After escaping her confinement in King's Landing Elia Martell had sworn to be done with marriage and alliances. She had been content with the thought of watching her children grow up amongst their cousins. Dorne was her home and her brother's Kingdom after all. But King Robert Baratheon did not rest until eliminating all viable Targaeryen heirs just as he had done with the Tyrells. On the other side of the continent war rages as Tywin Lannister struggles to keep hold on both Vale and Riverlands.
The last thing Elia expected when Princess Lyanna Stark made the long and dangerous journey south to them was for the young woman to propose marriage to her.
But maybe it was a chance for her to make Robert listen thru the Starks...

Golden bells!
What a world of happiness their harmony foretells!
Through the balmy air of night
How they ring out their delight!
From the molten-golden notes,
And all in tune.
