Newt can cast a Patronus, which is a handy-dandy thing considering the often dangerous parts of the world he has travelled to that hold creatures and beings susceptible to a Patronus casting. While he can now cast both a shield and corporeal form, it wasn't always that way. He actually struggled quite a bit for a long time on forms. Other students who were able to manage fully corporeal Patronuses mocked him when he could barely work a proper shield Patronus. However, without the pressures to do better in the face of the teasing, it is very likely his skill at casting this in particular would not have improved very much, which easily could have cost him his life in later years. He practiced this spell more than nearly any other while at school, determined to show he was apt at magic and could excel beyond peoples’ expectations of him. Which, eventually, resulted in a very chaotic classroom one day ( there was a lot of screaming, he’s still not sure why ) when Newt was finally able to get a corporeal shape and out came a very large and intimidating-looking Thestral. While effective, and ultimately ending the the teasing and mocking for being poor at conjuring a Patronus, it dug an entirely new hole for him as people whispered about him “ not being right ”, as the creatures are seen as death omens and are very ill-favoured. As a plus to this, however, Newt hadn’t known much about Thestrals before the successful casting of his Patronus, and eventually finding them on the grounds only served to enhance his love for creatures and proving how seriously, dangerously, misunderstood they and other creatures were by the wizarding world.

"Just wandering around outside this guarded place...come on Xiao you know you want to smile! Give into the laughter!!"

"Absolutely not....wait what? A guarded place? Are you sure they weren't being kept in there? What if they are dangerous?"

"Xiao, they have been cuddling you for ten minutes...pretty sure it isn't dangerous. I think they like you!"

"What the fuck is that..." Wanderer stared at the blobby orange pile of goop next to you, his face twisted into a almost disgusted look as it watched him with large round eyes and a cute smile, you could tell the little one just wanted to be friends with him...but convincing him to agree would be difficult.

"They are my friend, I found them outside of a security building...lost and sad, all alone. I had to help them! Come on, you know they are cute!" You patted the blobs head, making it jiggle while it's smile grew, truthfully the cutest little thing you'd ever seen.

"Did you just say you found it...near a SECURITY BUILDING???"

"Do you think they feel emotions? Such as agony, happiness...loneliness? Do you think they have family?" Kazuha threw a stick a couple feet away, watching with a distant look in his eyes as the blob hurried after it like a puppy playing fetch. In truth you'd wondered the same thing for awhile now...did your little friend have a family? Had you taken them away from it...or had you saved them from something that had made their family non existent?

"I know they can feel emotions. Right now they are clearly happy and when I first found them they seemed sad, but for all I know I read it wrong...what if I took them away from their home?"

"I think the more accurate wording...is you gave them a home. You tend to do that...for more than just new creatures."

"From a secure building you say? Perhaps we should investigate it further? There could be more entities like your friend..." Heizou stared at the orange blob, truthfully less concerned with finding more of them and far more concerned with finding out if their occurrence was due to illegal experiments. It could be a big bust if his intuition was correct...and it almost always was.

"Yeah but Heizou it was incredibly guarded, like people with guns..."

"Guns hmm? I'll call in back up then, I have a feeling what you saw was more than just a secure base."

"Oh wow...that's a interesting creature...um what is it?" Ventis words showed his confusion, in all his years of living he'd never really seen anything like your little friend, sure slimes could bare resemblance but...something was off about this particular blob. Something in its eyes...like it had seen unbearable things..

"I'm not really sure what they are, I found them by accident while I was adventuring. They were wandering around the forest and looked hungry, so I gave them a bunch of fruits. You should see it Venti! They just dissolve!" You reached into your bag, digging around for a apple you knew you had in there.

"It...dissolves things???"

"Awwe they are kinda cute..." Aether said, smiling sweetly as he kneeled in front of the orange glob, "Hi there little buddy, you want some food?"

You felt your heart swell at the sight...everyone else had said you'd made the wrong choice saving the little blob, but Aether was different...he saw them the same as any other creature, something who deserved to be treated with kindness. "Aren't they adorable? I've never seen anything like it before so I was a little scared they might be harmful, but I don't think they'd hurt a fly."

"I don't see them hurting anyone either, here you go little buddy." Aether tossed a sunsettia into the air, chuckling sweetly as the blob caught it and dissolved it with a happy smile.

"Ahem,...you say it has special properties?" Neuvillette looked down at the orange blob, wondering how such a being could exist...if it really was a natural occurrence and if it's friendly nature was only mere show and deep down it held a much more nefarious purpose.

"Yep!! If you hug them, they release these yummy scents and it makes you feel happy! They can also tickle you and they loovvee to play fetch!"

"You say it produces different scents? Does that mean it could possibly release toxins as well?"

any headcanons you haven’t shared yet? ;)

I’ve actually been working on these for a minute now and also sorry I went quiet, I was gone on vaycay. These are just some HCs that came to mind at different moments. Mostly Fluff and Angst:

Bunty and Aberforth rarely argue, but every couple does at some point. Abe is always quick to apologize if he says something mean. Bunty is also really fast with her apologizes whether it was her fault or not. They’re arguments have never lasted more than a couple hours maximum.

Newt contacting Aberforth about a slight hiccup that happened at work. Aberforth running to find Bunty sleep at the infirmary, being treated for an almost severe bite on her arm. When she wakes up he’s sitting in the bedside chair, holding her hand and fast asleep. She could see the worry and stress on his face and it almost made her cry realizing how important she was to him.

Abe taking off his coat and wrapping it around Bunty so she won’t be cold. It makes her look smaller than she actually is and he adores it.

The first time Aberforth really talked about Ariana and what happened to her, he broke down crying. Bunty held him, with his head on her shoulder, and she just gently rubbed his back. Aberforth couldn’t remember the last time he had someone there to grieve with him about Ariana.

Aberforth always tries his best to remember the dates and anniversaries of everything that happened in their relationship. He knows how important the dates are to her and so he always has a gift put aside for that reason.

Because Abe can do spells without saying them, he started to teach Bunty more on defensive magic and in return she taught him more about herbology. 

Aberforth jumping through hoops to plan Bunty a surprise birthday party. He wanted it to be perfect and that meant he had to pretend like he didn’t get her much for her bday. He could tell that Bunty was slightly bummed about how her day was going and his secret didn’t make anything easier.

First she told him about Newt and how he had forgotten her birthday in total (the truth was, he hadn’t). She had grown used to his obliviousness in regards to her but it still stung. Then, Bunty led the conversation to how she thought they might be able to go out somewhere later but Abe explained he was sadly busy with the bar for the day. Bunty gave a sad smile and made her way upstairs alone. Aberforth almost broke on the spot as he watched her shoulders slump and tears form in her eyes when she acknowledged his “busy” schedule without fuss.

When Abe went upstairs later that day to find her, she had mysteriously disappeared. Aberforth found a note on the nightstand that read, “I understand you’re busy, so I went out on my own for a bit. Be back later. Love you.” -Bunty. This took Abe by surprise because all their friends were downstairs waiting for her in the dark. He was forced to tell everyone that they had to wait a little while longer, so they turned the lights back on and everybody got served drinks.

After a couple hours, the pub door opened and Bunty stepped in covered in muck and dirt but a smile on her face. Everyone stopped in their tracks and Bunty turned confused. Queenie was the only one to shout out, “surprise!” Aberforth made his way to her and pulled her to the side to explain the situation. Bunty had went out to play with beasts to make herself feel better. She was successful but dirty. She couldn’t believe that he had went through all this for her, she kissed him until Newt kindly cleared his throat. It was one of the best birthdays she ever had.

Bunty nervously taking Aberforth to her flat for the first time, she didn’t have visitors often. He was surprised to see how many random artifacts she had collected. Abe noticed that she owned at least 11 framed photos of her and Newt. Mostly them on their journeys over the years, and the pictures were perfectly spread throughout her flat. It made him a little jealous until he saw a picture of himself on her nightstand. She had apparently snuck a portrait of him while he was smiling at a book one morning at breakfast. When Abe asked her about it, she got flustered. Stuttering something about “how he looked quite fetching that morning” and how she “was sorry to invade his privacy like that”. Abe shrugged it off and when he got some free time, found an old photo of himself just for her.

Aberforth loves telling people that Bunty is his partner. Bunty is usually the first thing he brings up in a conversation, especially when he’s forced to talk to somebody.

After a month of knowing and talking to Bunty, Aberforth had grown to care deeply for her. He knew if anything happened to her, he would completely lose it. He was tired of losing people and he refused to lose Bunty too.

Bunty loves to wash Aberforth’s hair. She likes running her fingers through it and just doing whatever. Abe doesn’t mind one bit and now avoids cleaning his hair with magic.

this i am less sure on, mostly because there's not that much of dee's writing i have been able to read. (some of their fic explores themes which are too heavy for me) also if you wrote a newtmas fic dee, i probably haven't even laid eyes on it yet i'm sorry.

but. i have read that nalby ficlet, and. yeah. here's what i've got:

the main thing is that this fic made me *puppy eyes* all over, and that's what nalby ficlet did to me.

nalby. need i say more. hilarious and amazing charcterization, newt's a little shit and alby's all Grown Up. they make an amazing couple

introversion/social anxiety. well described, and it goes away when minho feels comfortable

what i didn't know where to place were mentions of prague (don't know if dee's got any feelings on prague), and that thomas uses a french word for humor. i think dee knows a little french, but was under the impression that portuguese is the main foreign language they know?

"formal clue" (from the notes):

dee is relatively 'new' to thominho, and the notes, of this fic bringing them closer to thominho, makes sense under that aspect.

this i will say i am... fuck it. i was gonna say 99% sure, but i'll give this one a 100% as well.

beautiful thomally characterization. this had me thinking of crest (@crestfallercanyon ) in the beginning, but that adds up bc clod and crest talk similarly about thomally. lot of beautiful tumblr posts out there to prove that

a Bad Guy that turns out not to be as clear black and white bad

humand are Complicated and their relationships hurt

this leads me on a tangent. as i said i at first thought this could be crest's piece as well. apart from the fact that my gift was uploaded later and i'm, again, 100% sure that it's crest who wrote it, this made me think of the differences in clod and crest's writing.

in crest's writing, bad stuff happens, but it always gets *better* with human connections.

in clod's writing, it's the human connections that hurt. not to go all pretentious but what clod does reminds me too much of it to not mention it: the french play 'huis clos' (engl. 'no exit') by sartre.

in that play, 3 people are locked inside a room and told that they're in hell. at first, they're not sure how this can actually be hell, but as time goes on and they tell their story, it becomes apparent that they're trapped with each other because each of them needs something from another person present (love, approval, forgiveness), while another one needs something from them that they're not willing/inclined to give. and that makes the play end with those famous words (i *think* it's the ending lol, maybe it's just a quote but whatever):

l'enfer, c'est les autres

[engl. 'hell is other people']

and yeah, i think that's what happens in clod's writing and what she manages to do over and over. okay sidetrack over, let's go back to the List.

thomas' attraction to gally is open and borders on pathetic which we love to see hmmmmm

an ending that's not a happy ending (this is actually quite cheery if you know the rest of clod's writing alskdjflas)

no one makes me cry and hurt over fic like clod does.

and no one does that in a way that leaves me begging for more, and where i'd let her do it again in an instant

this one i'm less sure on. there's 2 main reasons for that:

i haven't read all newtmas fics

there's a lot of people who write newtmas, and i am familiar with almost none of them. unlike with authors for eg thomally and thominho.

so this was a harder one to guess, and if i'm wrong, this will just be a list of things that i like about snick's writing that showed up in someone else's writing.

writing:

brackets. FUNNY brackets.

mention of newt being cold in like the first few paragraphs, when it's the think gel and snick bonded over (consult Hot n’ Cold (or: Sweaters) [headcanon] on that)

newtmas have a major PDA problem (consult airport fic on this)

the word PDA. i know other people use it, but snick uses it, too, and i know that bc i had to look it up when she first used it lmao

generally the newtmas feels very Her. nuzzling into each other like there's no tomorrow (get yourself some snick newtmas nuzzling in catfic )

frequent mention of kink lololo

minho characterization. very Her.

gally characterization. very Her.

used words i had to look up. from the authors i read, that only ever happens to me in snickfic.

generally: language. rolls off your tongue and guides you through the story lightly and like a rolling boat, if that makes sense.

puns. loads of other people picked that out, too, but again snick's the only one who thinks puns are funny i've seen use puns in writing (consult: coffeeshop fic)

i loved her piece on vulnerability for thominho week (admire it here), and instantly knew this was her. i'm not good at art so i can't say more on that, i just Knew. and just as thominho week art, these drawing made me feel super Soft inside, especially the soniet one, it's just so beautiful!

safe haven (crest has 3 safe haven thomally fics and so is very comfortable writing them, and i daresay she likes the setting.) (to build a home is one of them)

bookverse. this is a bookverse fic, and crest loves bookverse. she read the books growing up, and they've felt like home to her in way that's unique to this day. she also knows those books intimately and by heart, so she feels very comfortable writing in their setting.

Minho Is A Good Friend

apelsin references. crest knows apelsin, crest loves apelsin, crest has written a fucking continuation of apelsin. additionally i think crest knows i love apelsin.

minho/sonya reference!!! (other people could know that, too, but crest definitely knows of it and she'd be thoughtful enough to include it <3)

has some vibes of sha's ( @hoesaekyoongi ) writing as well, and i know crest has read that (it's great, read it here)

the words. the fucking WORDS. crest takes words and makes things with them i don't even know how to say it.

gally. he's holding back, he's There, he's so much, he's guarded but ready to be loved.

thomas. he's careful, he knows his flaws, he likes gally a lot, even if it takes him some time to realize it.

thomas' and gally's past isn't just pushed aside. thomas forgives gally, there's a sense for the things they've done, the guilt, and the way they cope with it is just so palpable, so Real.

generally, the Thomally! they're maybe even 'reluctant' at first, there's a lot of potential for misunderstandings, and there's rough edges, and it all takes Time. the time spent besides each other, the slow understanding that creeps in. the appreciation.

the way they both come to appreciate each other's company, the way that the other fills a... Place inside of them in a way that no one else quite can

i know this isn't supposed to be a liferead, but that kiss. that kiss man. it killed me. a lot like he goes down easy for me which i love to death. this is how crest writes attraction, physical contact up until s*x. it's SO fucking real, the emotions are just There, and you want to sink into this moment and never reappear again.

i'll end this by saying this fic made me feel the way crest's writing makes me feel. it makes me feel peaceful, it makes me feel whole, it makes me feel happy in a way i didnt' know i could feel.

it would be insane luck if i'd spotted both of my newtmas friends' fics, so i'm totally aware i could be wrong here. let me list the reasons why i think it's fabs anyway.

german quotation marks. i didn't see them in other fics, but they could have snuck in all the same. i know my word sometimes changes from english to german quotation marks randomly.

this one is mostly based on ~vibes~ to be honest. same as with dee, i haven't been able to read all of saph's writing because of some of the heavy topics. the one's i've read though i loved, you know that. (that scallison ficlet hmmmmm <3)

strong on environmental descriptions. i loved saph's piece on the greek village in summer that demonstrrates this perfectly, read it here)

Ok! I’m not the biggest Sheeran fan. Can’t say I know much of his music besides the one he did for the hobbit lol So…here’s this deconstructed fanfic.

-You always knew that he’d choose her. The bond they seemed to have was entirely different from your own…-It hurt all the same. Because, he didn’t even need to say it. The look he gave you when you told him you loved him…it simply spoke volumes.-“Y/N…” -“No…no…” You faked a smile, swallowing constantly to try and choke back the tears that threatened to spill. “I should go back to making dinner…” You rose from your seat, giving Newt one last look before heading towards your kitchen. -You could hear him pacing, and then silence. For some small moment you hoped…and then there it was. The sound of your door opening, and he was gone.-Months went by, and the only comfort for a broken heart was the thought of Newt being happy. He always did seem so around Leta anyway.-You strolled down Diagon Alley, humming softly to yourself as you looked through the shop windows. A familiar reflection in one of them caught your eye, and you turned quickly to see Newt across the street, laughing at something Leta said. Her arm was curled around Newt’s, her pretty face nuzzling into his neck.-They seemed ever the happy couple. -Just as you turned to walk away, his line of sight landed straight upon you. Your heart stopped, and you stumbled a bit as you tried to remain perfectly still. -Leta was far too busy eyeing some jewels in the window, but Newt…his smile faded into an expression of surprise. -It felt like eternity to you, but as Leta began to turn around you took that chance and ran off down the street. -The weeks began to drag, and all you could do was nurse your own broken heart alone in your small home. -Perhaps, it was a pathetic sight. But, nothing could make the days any easier. -A knock at your door made you look up from your spot on the couch, and you sighed in frustration as you got up to answer it.-“N-Newt….?”-The Hufflepuff stood at your doorway, eyes puffy, almost red in color. His voice was the sound of a man who’s entire life had come to an end.-“Y/N…” Newt pushed forward, curling his arms around you as he hugged you close and cried silently into you.-Your eyes widened, and your hands were raised in the air, reluctant to touch the man in your state of shock. -For a man of his stature, he seemed so small this very moment with his head tucked between your shoulder. -“Forgive me…” -Newt pulled away, his green eyes a blur behind his tears. “Leta…she left me.” -It was no shock to you. Bond or no bond, the Lestrange family was known to be odd, and hardly sympathetic towards others emotions. -But, you acted surprised none the less. “I am…sorry to hear that.”-Newt smiled down at you, his fingers playing with a strand of your hair as he spoke. -“I was too blind to see it then…I should’ve stayed with you.”-“What?” You couldn’t believe what you were hearing, and truthfully, you weren’t sure it was the truth. -Newt leaned down, kissing you softly on the lips, and pressing your foreheads together. “Forgive me, Y/N.” -“Newt…”

Fantastic beasts characters and their journals

*In this HC post, no one is dead and everyone is friends with everyone, simply because I can’t handle sadness.*

Newt Scamander: He has many notebooks. One of them is a small, pocket sized one where he fills in reminders (Anniversary with Tina this sunday!, Mooncalves pallets are running out etc.), random ideas (fire whisky mixed with crushed beetle eyes are good for treating billywig stings) and things he learns about his beasts (demiguises generally enjoy melancholic violin music). It is very messy, and he replaces it regularly when he runs out of space. After every week or so, he likes to transfer those notes to a large, meticulously indexed and leather bound notebook, completed with sketches where appropriate, which is basically the first draft for his book. He also keeps detailed diaries documenting the growth of various creatures, every. single. creature. Newt has many notebooks.

Tina Goldstein: Being an auror is impressive, especially given the (sexist and racist) time period she lives in. Tina gets to where she is by setting out clear goals for herself in a journal that she has since young, pristine despite its age. She is the kind of person everyone wants to be with a detailed five year plan (which admittedly kind of falls apart when she gets demoted). Besides that, she also likes lists very much. Gift ideas, to-do lists, favourite books... Her journal has every list imaginable. She even has a list titled ‘Hot dogs around New York’, where she rates hot dog places by their i)tastiness, ii)vicinity to home/MACUSA, iii)amount of mustard used, among other things. She puts a new concealment charm on her notebook every once in awhile to keep her notebook private. 

Queenie Goldstein: She has a beautiful, expensive journal that Tina gave her as a Christmas gift, where she sketches out all her clothing designs. They are beautifully coloured, and she liked to attach fabric swatches, buttons and threads samples to it. Because of that, her notebook is very bulky. It is very neat, and the index is charmed to update itself. Most of her designs all for herself and Tina, though there is now a newer, smaller heading for Newt and Jacob. In the back of the notebook, she has scrawled on different people’s drink preferences (Tina, for example, likes her coffee black with a bit of cream, and her tea with little milk and loads of sugar). She seldom looks at it however, having learnt everyone’s preference by heart.

Jacob Kowalski: He has an old journal, passed to him from his grandma. In it were many recipes on pastries, breads and cakes, created and handwritten by Grandma herself. There are still a lot of blank pages,  and Jacob has used them to design the layout for his shop, written down contact details of suppliers, as well as some recipes of his own. Grandma kept her entries very tidy, with clean handwriting and carefully numbered procedures. Jacob, however, prefers a freer way of journalling. The notebook is also dirty from accidental food spills and coffee stains. Jacob refers to this notebook a lot, so it looks quite used and ready to fall apart. Luckily, Queenie has charmed it for him such that the notebook (cover, pages, spine) will stay together (but just barely). 

Percival Graves: Many people expect Percival Graves to have an schedule book with a rigid and carefully thought-out timetable, but that cannot be further away from the truth. A daily schedule is useless, since it can be easily derailed by emergencies or new leads on cases. Percival has a minimalistic notebook, with only a yearly view calendar and ruled pages. It is small enough to take with him wherever he goes, which is important since he is always out investigating. There may be casual reminders in the book from time to time, but most of it is indecipherable scribbles or lazy doodles (mostly of cats, which he has a secret fondness for), which he draws idly when thinking over his cases. His memory is good enough for remembering meetings with Madame President and other Very Important People. 

Credence Barebone: When he is in the orphanage, he has neither money nor freedom to keep a journal of his own. After the obscurus accident, he is given a notebook by Newt (along with a writing set), and he doesn’t know what to do with it at first. He is afraid of ‘ruining’ the notebook by writing on it. At Queenie’s suggestion, he starts to use it as a sort of diary, writing about his daily life, or sometimes, about his life when living with his mother. He even writes a letter addressed to Modesty once, apologising for not protecting her more from their mother, and for indirectly causing her death. He has also addressed letters to Mary-Lou, Chastity and Grindelwald, who manipulated him so fully. They aren’t finished, because he still hasn’t said everything he wants to say. Writing is an outlet for him, and it calms him down and helps him come to terms with what happened.
