2020 End of Year Post - kdrama edition

This is only going to cover kdramas that aired in 2020; if it originally aired another year, it’s not on this list.

It’s been a pretty lackluster kdrama year. There are probably only 5 kdramas I truly loved and only three of them I was really obsessed over. Better luck in 2021!

DRAMAS WATCHED

(In order of liking from least to most as opposed to pure quality; I am including if I’ve seen enough to make up my mind; yes I realize that’s inaccurate, but that’s my list)

42 Born Again - so bad, so incoherent, so insane, I have no idea why the leads signed up for it (and unlike some of the other watchers, I think it was awful from the very start.) There is literally nothing about this drama that makes sense.

41 Love with Flaws - a bunch of people who should be tried under the Geneva Convention.

40 Sweet Munchies - Jung Il Woo proves his inability to pick a functional script.

39 Meow the Secret Boy - if you ever wanted to bang a cat, this drama is for you. Not being a furry, however...

38 Do Do Sol Sol La Sol - I lost braincells just typing out this title.

37 When I Was the Most Beautiful - the only way it’s not the dumbest, most pointless melo of 2020 is because Born Again considerately came out the same year.

36 Woman of 9.9 Billion - if you want to watch an artsy French movie about miserable people, but only badly made, boy do I have a drama for you.

35 Lies after Lies - screams after screams.

34 Backstreet Rookie - people were up in arms about various problematic plots. I am a survivor of many plots much more problematic but even I couldn’t survive how utterly boring and annoying this drama was and how utterly irritating the leads were. This has taken Ji Chang Wook off my top favorites into “should I even check his latest Lovestruck in the City? Probably not” territory almost single-handedly (Melt Me helped, to be fair.)

33 Men Are Men - boring is boring.

32 Dinner Mate - two beautiful boring people eat out a lot.

31 Was It Love - no it wasn’t.

30 Alice - Joo Won in the shower can make up for a multitude of sins but not plot nonsense of such magnitude. When you find yourself thinking it would be better if he hooked up with the alternate universe version of his mother because at least then something entertaining would happen, you know it’s bad.

29 More than Friends - started out OK, then made me hate basically everyone and kept going.

28 Start-Up - honestly, it’s probably more decent than its place here, but the toxic and batshit fandom for it (the worst this year) made me feel like breaking out in hives any time it’s even mentioned.

27 The Spies who Loved Me - how to take a good cast and waste it.

26 Private Lives - it was good but it never took off with its concept and spent more time on the incoherent plot than the OTP which was its one strength. It’s a decent drama but coming after Heartless City and My Beautiful Bride from the same writer, it’s a disappointment.

25 Record of Youth - as high as it is due to Park Bo Gum hard carrying this entire awful drama on his shoulders and doing it so well I finished it. Alas, while he is in one drama (and that drama is great), the rest of the characters and the entirety of the script are a pointless useless mess.

24 Do You Like Brahms - excellent first third, mediocre middle, and terrible last third. I don’t know what musical term applies to this? Diminuendo, I think.

23 I’ll Go to You When the Weather is Nice - nice and mellow but nothing much happens.

22 Forest - mainly for Park Hae Jin’s excellent and frequently naked bod.

21 The Ballot - I didn’t love it as much as everyone did but it was well-made.

20 Hyena - more romance and less weird law stuff would make it better.

19 365 Repeat the Year - surprisingly solid.

18 The Game Towards Zero - see 365.

17 When My Love Blooms - very old fashioned, very lovely.

16 Chocolate - also very old fashioned and very lovely but also with Yoon Kye Sang performing medical procedures bleeding and shirtless. MMM.

15 (tie) Secret Royal Inspector - a fun if run of the mill sageuk.

15 Find Me In Your Memory - best melo this year.

14 Mystic Pop Up Bar - surprisingly good even though I wasn’t planning to check it out.

13 Where Your Eyes Linger - came out of nowhere but was tender and hopeful and lovely.

12 Itaewon Class - Park Seo Joon hard carries a drama that is already excellent. Love it.

11 Psychopath Diary - Yoon Shi Yoon is such a treat in a hilarious, cynical, dark comedy.

10 Kairos - more like ouroboros.

9 Queen Love and War - in a year where sageuks are very rare, this was solid and surprisingly moving and shippy.

8 The King Eternal Monarch - people didn’t like it but I did. It’s no masterpiece and both the leads and the writers have better dramas, but it was a lovely romantic fairy tale for me.

7 Mr. Queen - sharp, hilarious, and some of my favorite actors.

6 Psycho But It’s OK - healing, sharp cinematography and even sharper chemistry.

5 Crash Landing on You - the last ep pissed me off so much this drama is dead to me but I loved it so much until then I can’t place it lower in good conscience.

4 Train - who knew I would go this hard for an OCN drama or that OCN would do romance so well? But this time-travel mystery romance is just incredible and I shipped the OTP and rooted for the characters and loved every last bit of it.

3 Run On - this is the drama Record of Youth wanted to be but failed. Smart and lived in, you feel like you are peeking at real people, but also even four episodes in, I am so invested in the main characters separately and together, and care for them so much, it’s a little frightening.

1 (tie) Tale of the Nine Tailed - my perfect fantasy romance. I liked it better than Goblin, yeah I said it.

1 Flower of Evil - all the tropes I love in one incredible package. I would rewatch episodes waiting for new ones trying to puzzle the story and to stay withdrawal but it works just as well on rewatch. Lee Jun Ki brings his trademark tortured intensity and for once, both his leading lady and his script back him up and are worthy of that. It’s perfect.

FAVORITE DRAMA

It’s a tie between Tale of the Nine Tailed and Flower of Evil but if I had to pick just one, FoE, because it had me seriously obsessed and guessing about the protagonist and gave me the narrative tropes I love so much and an OTP that statisfied all my hurt/comfort kinks and then some.

WORST DRAMA

Born Again - honestly, this is so bonkers it almost becomes good but alas...

FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER

Do Hyun Soo/Baek Hee Sung, Flower of Evil - he is so messed up, so on edge, so traumatized. Yet capable of so much warmth and caring even as he himself doesn’t realize his humanity. FoE is basically a story of a man pushed and punished by the world for his entire life who, because of one woman, finds a safe place and peace and slowly comes to life without realizing it, and watching his desperation to keep this small bit of normalcy is so heartbreaking and exciting all at once. Plus, you start the drama thinking he’s a psychopathic serial killer and end it (if you are me) thinking he must be protected at all costs and if anyone even looks at him wrong they must suffer, and that’s quite a change!

FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER

Nam Ji Ah, Tale of the Nine Tailed - she is so funny and tough and smart and loving and amazing that I will totally buy that a literal demi-god will do anything and everything for her and love her for literal eternity.

NEEDS TO BE MURDERED

Dad in Record of Youth - yes in a year with serial killers and supernatural demons, I picked a normal character from a mediocre drama. It’s his everyday awfulness to his family that hits so hard and I am sad he never got his comeuppance.

FAVORITE SHIP

Ji Ah x Yeon - a fearless reporter and an immortal demi-god who’s been hoping for his human beloved to reincarnate. A really rare set-up where the OTP is equally ride or die, so compatible and completely BAMF. I got why he waited for her for that long and then fell in love with her all over again. Perfection.

Runner up: Flower of Evil - he is so messed up he literally does not believe he is capable of love or empathy, but he falls in love with her anyway and so utterly she permeates his entire life. She is tough as nails and only believes what she sees and is the sole person who believes in him against the world. She loves him but he needs her. She needs him but he loves her. They are amazing.

FAVORITE SECONDARY OTP

Seo Dan x Gu Seung Jun, Crash Landing on You, North Korean x Conman were so good I shipped them harder than the main OTP and the end of that storyline pissed me off so much I dumped the drama and didn’t finish it for months (and it’s still dead to me.)

NOTP

Record of Youth - it started out and they didn’t have much chemistry but the dialogues were interesting and I thought the chemistry would grow. It didn’t and deteriorated, their dialogues became boring and relationship had zero development (about as much as the supposed female lead.) I think we were supposed to feel bad they broke up and they were going for a bittersweet open ending, instead I found myself happy about the break up of two incompatible, chemistry-less people and hoping for the love of God they never get back together.

FAVORITE SCENE

Yeon and the bridge of knives, Tale of the Nine Tailed - Yeon choosing to undergo the creeptastic bridge of knives for a chance to save Ji Ah, who at that point he is not aware is the reincarnation of his Joseon love because, as he says, he doesn’t care if she is or isn’t, it just would be more horrible to have her die than to undergo the horrific torture he is undergoing, and then the sequence with his catching her, her weeping over him and the fact that she is the original Joseon girl revealed and all the bandaging and his watching her sleep and all that loveliness, is everything for yours truly.

Runner up: Hyun Soo having that break-down at the cliff at the end of ep 15 of Flower of Evil as Ji Won desperately tries to convince him she is alive and he finally stumbles to her.

Runner runner up (it’s my list, I will do what I want): Do Won preparing to blow his brains out to give a chance to Seo Kyung to live in Train.

BIGGEST CRUSH

Seon-Gyeom, Run On. Yeah, I know. Im Siwan is tiny, delicate featured and has a runner’s build, none of which are things that normally appeal to me. But his character is so odd, so honest, so unflinching in pursuing what he thinks is right, so incapable of self-pity despite plenty of reasons for it, and so ridiculously attractive when he smiles, I don’t even care.

BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER

Kim Bum, TotNT - I started out being annoyed by him and ended up looking forward to his scenes and being distraught by his ending.

NEEDS A SEQUEL

Honestly, none. I was fine with all the endings. I wouldn’t mind seeing post-end life of Tale of the Nine Tailed characters or the OTP settling into their literal new world in Train, but I am good.

TROPE THAT NEEDS TO DIE

Time jump that solves all the problems off screen or alternatively years pass and everyone is frozen - something that kdramas need to learn and need to learn badly. See Record of Youth, Brahms and Start Up.

FAVORITE TROPE WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF

Men who are ride or die for their OTP - this was a great year for this - the male leads of four of my five dramas were beyond anything on that scale (only exception is Run On because it’s still too early to tell there.) Yes PLEASE.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

This was a banner year for that what with Start Up, Do You Like Brahms, Record of Youth, and Private Lives all starting out well and nosediving off the cliff but winner is Crash Landing on You. I loved it so much for bulk of its run but the last episode pissed me off so much I deleted all my files and called it a day.

BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE

Flower of Evil - I had no expectations of this drama and wasn’t even planning on watching it despite liking both the lead actors because yet another “look at evil serial killer be evil” drama with no romance was not my thing. Luckily someone convinced me there might be some romance and I peeked curiously. Honestly, their promo campaign was the most misleading and dumbest thing ever.

Runner up Psycho but it’s OK - I have never liked Kim Soo Hyun in anything before and the drama premise seemed WTF but it was shockingly good and KSH totally blew me away.

Hardest Working Lead

Yoon Shi Yoon - he starred in two (!!!) dramas in 2020 playing three characters and not only were both these dramas awesome in a lackluster year, but if it wasn’t for the fact that I knew it was the same actor and the fact that the characters shared a face, I would have never believed that they were played by the same actor. So good!

2020 DRAMAS I HAVEN’T SEEN THAT I MOST WANT TO WATCH

None. Covid Year gave me PLENTY of time

BEST NON-2020 DRAMA I’VE WATCHED IN 2020

My Beautiful Bride and Deserving of the Name - I was obsessed with both of them and honestly, they were much better than the bulk of 2020 kdramas I watched.

MOST ANTICIPATED IN 2021

The Moon That Rises in the Day, Hong Chun Gi, Joseon Exorcist, Island,  Frightening Cohabitation, Snowdrop.

Across The Serververse, Chapter 11

Porky was pacing up and down, arms folded a cloud of worry above his head. A few foot away from him Foghorn and Barnyawd were trying to sound ‘encouraging’.

“Don’t, I say, don’t you worry Porky, mah boy!” Foghorn said, cheerfully. “They’ll be comin’ back any minute now!”

Porky screwed his eyes up and looked up to the sky again. “Y-you’ve b-b-been s-s-saying that for the last - for the last - the las - ages.”

The next scene opened up on Daffy and Porky leaving the hospital.

“You know where we’re going wrong, Porkster?” Daffy asked, musingly.

“T-t-the entire scheme?” Porky said, teasingly.

Ignoring him Daffy carried on. “We’re starting to small. We need to set up something grand, something...awsome...” With that declaration he rubbed his hands together and strode off.

Porky watched him go then looked up to the heavens and said. “S-s-somehow I don’t like the s-s-sound of that. Daffy! Wait up!” And he went running after him.

“Porky!” Petunia trilled as she hurried over to Porky and kissed him softly on the cheek. “Any sign?” She asked, sympathetically.

To which her husband made a sort of ‘hah!’ noise and indicated the empty sky.

Petunia then went about trying to convince Porky to put his guard down and come back to the house, even going so far as to assure him that both Foghorn and Barnyawd would be on watch for them [despite not actually asking them if they would be.] 

With one last look at the sky, the older pig sighed. “I-I-i suppose you’re r-ri- correct.” He linked arms with his wife, then looked back anxiously at Barnyward and Foghorn. “Y-y-you’ll tell us if they come b-b-back?”

“Nah, we’ll leave it a few months. Let ya worry a lil’ more” Barnyawd said, sarcastically. “Of coirse we will! Now go!”

Porky and Petunia started to walk off, arm in arm, talking quietly to each other when suddenly Foghorn yelled. 

“Incoming, I say, incoming! Watch out! Marvin’s crash-landing again!” 

Porky and Petunia immediately turned back and looked up. Contrary to Foggie’s dramatic statement, Marvin wasn’t crashing his spaceship but managing to land the ship gracefully a few feet away.

The doors opened, a lot of smoke curled out of ship and Porky could see the silhouette of his family beyond it. He thought his chest was going to explode as a rush of happiness overtook him and he ran into the ship, trying to say. “Oh my-! I can’t believe you’re all back! Amazing!” and instead just managing to do his normal stuttering act. 

Much hugging and exclamations later and Porky looked around the ship once more and asked, in concern. “W-wh-where’s everyone else?”

Porky, Petunia, Foghorn and Barnyawd were duly brought up to speed about everyone else’s locations and, at the end of the explanation, Bugs asked. “Eh...where’s Daf, Porkster?”

Porky sighed and looked at Petunia who made a ‘go on, it’ll be fine’ gesture.

After much stuttering and a few false starts the older toon managed to explain that Daffy was lying down having been given a sleeping tablet by Doctor Scratchensniff. “We-we’ve had s-so-something of an adventure.” Porky added, almost apologetically. “I-i know!” He brightened up. “I’ll explain via fl-flas-oh, just watch.”

And with that the his siblings - and Petunia - pulled up chairs and started to watch the flashbacks.  

*5 and a half months ago*

The flashback opened up on an image of Porky and Daffy screaming as they fell through the air towards a map with the words ‘D.C. World’ written on it.

The two toons smashed into the ground in a puff of dust and earth. There was a worrying gap then Daffy leapt out of the crater the two of them had just created with a ‘Hi-yah!’ and a kung-fu pose. “Alright Rhythm!” He yelled, eyes pinpricks and brow furrowed. “I’m giving you one chance to give yourselth up or I’ll be forced to go Duck Dodgers on ya! And I did two years of training for that role!”

There was a silence then, when it became clear Rhythm was nowhere to be found, Daffy dropped the pose and looked around for any of his siblings. He found Porky at the bottom of said crater and pulled him out by his tail while bemoaning that Porky’s life had been ‘Tragically cut short! He wasth young! Stho young!” * Beat* “Okay, so technically he was in his late 80′sth. But STHILL-!”

“D-daffy-”

The duck gasped and clasped a hand to his heart. “I can hear him! Oh, Porky...” His eyes welled with tears. “...You’ll always have a place in my heart-”

“D-d-daffy, I’m not dead.” Porky said, in annoyance from the ducks arms. 

Daffy blinked and leaned forward. “You sure about that, Chum? You look peaky-”

“I-i-is it any wonder!?” Porky snapped, pushing Daffy away and standing up. Dusting himself down the pig rattled through the list of things they had to do, namely see if any of the others were there and find out where they were.

*A short while after that*

The next scene opened on Porky and Daffy walking down the street. The duck was noticeably subdued and was speaking in quite a serious manner. “Stho just me and you then, huh pal?” He said, thoughtfully. “Not even Bugsth hasth made it here? Hhmm. I don’t like it. C’mon! We need to try and get back.” Daffy screwed his face up as he racked his brains. “Can you remember where D.C. Worlds portal is?”

“Eh...” Bugs cut in as the rabbits brain leapt ahead about five steps. “Can I just stop you there, Doc? Oi bet oi can guess what happened next. Ya got ta the portal an’ it wouldn’t work?”

Porky glared and folded his arms. “I-i-if you know so much about it why d-d-don’t YOU tell the story then, Einstein?”

Bugs held his hands up and allowed Porky to continue.

The pig cleared his throat and began. “Yes, y-you’re right. The P-p-por - the thing wouldn’t work. And that was when D-d-daffy got his ‘great’ idea...”

*Daffy’s great idea*

“We’ll be superheros!” Daffy said, grabbing Porky by the shoulders. “And by ‘we’ I mean I’LL be a superhero and YOU’LL be my trusty sidekick! You can be...” Daffy thought for a moment. “...Pig Boy!” He declared after a moments consideration. 

“O-o-or I could just be E-e-eager Young Space Cadet?”

Daffy gave his friend a ‘look’. “Eh - copyright, Porkster?”

“W-w-we’re owned by the same company!”

“And? That doesn’t make any difference! Jus’ ask Mickey! ‘Mickey MELON’ my assth...now - with me!”

*One quick scene change later*

[Daffy is in a boutiques. He pulls aside the curtain to reveal he is dressed in his superhero outfit from the movie - which the author has forgotten what it looked like, so can’t give a description] “Behold! Duck Awesome” Leaning up close to the 4th wall, Daffy whispered. “It’s like Duck Dodgers, but not copywrited. Loophole abuse, you might sthay. Anyway - back to the plot...” Daffy cleared his throat and yelled. “An’ here isth my trusthy sidekick - the notorious P.I.G!”

Another set of curtains opened to reveal Porky dressed in a outfit similar to Robin. With a glance at the 4th wall he said, flatly. “I-it was the only way to get the re-ref-reference in.”

“Now my sidekick!” Daffy grinned and rubbed his hands together. “Lesth solve some crimes!” And he bounded off.

“I-i think you’re g-g-getting yourself confused with She-Sherlock Holmes.” Porky said snarkliy, before paying for the costumes and running after his troublesome younger brother. 

What followed was a montage of Daffy trying [and failing] to perform heroic tasks. In order these were:

1. Rescuing a kitten from a tree. [The kitten waited till it had been removed from the tree before attacking Daffy in a flurry of fur and nails. Porky then removed the kitten from where it was hanging off of Daffy’s beak and handed it to the grateful owner.]

2. Helping a little old lady cross the road. [Daffy picked her up and carried her while Porky stopped the traffic. She spent the short journey hitting the duck on the head with her handbag.]

3. Trying to stop a car crash. [Daffy stood between the two cars and put his arms out. He ended up squashed between the two of them making him a very interesting shape. Porky then transported Daffy and the two drivers to a nearby hospital.]

The next scene opened up on Daffy and Porky leaving the hospital.

“You know where we’re going wrong, Porkster?” Daffy asked, musingly.

A/N: sebastian is in his early 30′s in this fanfic, idk if i’ve ever mentioned it before but i felt i should say it so no one’s confused. let me know what you guys think, i love receiving your feedback always warms my heart listening to your opinions xx

Y/N woke up to a different yet pleasant environment. The bus had stopped and there were no bumps that could wake her up and the sun was shining into the bus and all she could hear were people on the outside laughing following for some movie. She raised her torso from the bed where she was covered by yellow papers and walked over to the window, pulling the curtains to come to sight with what she had heard and seen for years in pop culture. Las Vegas. 

The lights were off as it was daytime but she could see the grandeur of everything. Y/N had only been to Vegas when she was a young girl with her father who was accompanying her mother to a writing gig and stuff seemed to remain the same. 

Sebastian took zero time to wake up once he felt the bright light hit his eyes. No matter what people said, waking up sober to bright daylight was somehow worse than waking up hangover to bright daylight. He lifted his head to stare at what he thought was his brain playing tricks on him. Y/N was looking out the window, back turned to him in the shortest, tightest shorts that enhanced her backside. This had to be his mind playing tricks on him. 

    - We’re in Vegas. - she rushed to his side. - C’mon, we gotta go out.

   - No. You go out, I’m tired and too important. - he turned to the other side, grabbing her fluffy white to cover over his head and try to stop the light from hitting his face. Y/N however was determined to get him to wake up, after all the boys and Sherrie had left already so she had no one else to go with her and going out by herself sounded like trouble. Y/N pushed the cover off him and onto the floor. - Go piss off someone else. 

   - Put a shirt on and let’s go. - she crossed her arms, one foot on top of the covers so he couldn’t push it over himself again. Defeated, he lifted his torso, rubbing his face and eyes to stare at the woman in front of him. - C’mon, don’t you wanna see Sherrie before she goes back to her work place?

   - I already had sex with her and said goodbye. - he groaned, looking at her with hatred in his eyes. There was nothing he hated more than having his precious sleep interrupted. But yet again he was fighting Y/N over going outside and she really wanted to. - Go meet the boys at the venue, they’ll take you. 

  - I’ll pay for breakfast. - she said, poking his cheek with her baby pink painted nail. Sebastian could not refuse free breakfast, specially when he was in Vegas and everything was over the top. 

The rockstar got up from his bed, looking at the mess of yellow papers and polaroids. He didn’t exactly remember if they had finished compiling them but he sure hoped they had because there was no way it would be possible to organise everything once again. He heard her say thank you as he walked to his own room to get dressed.

Y/N on the other hand was jumping around in her room like a little kid, grabbing clothes out of her closet and deciding what to wear. She lived in New York most of the year so she normally had little to no summer clothes but she found a nice short white summer dress. She grabbed her bag to check if she had her wallet, fully knowing he’d only gotten the rockstar to wake up due to free breakfast, and walked outside her room to find him in his usual dark jeans and a white shirt, cap and sunglasses on. 

  - You do realise that wearing a cap and sunglasses doesn’t exactly count as a disguise, right? You still look like you do cocaine on Fridays. - she looked over everything on the kitchen to check if the guys had left the stove on, which wouldn’t be the first time. She swore that living in this bus was a constant “when will I die” contest. 

  - I don’t do cocaine, that’s for newbies. 

  - I’m sorry I don’t know what’s your favourite dying poison. 

  - Poison would kill you so why add dying before poison, that’s just redundant. You’re a writer you should know that. - he grinned, happy he had corrected miss perfect but instead of getting the sweet satisfaction of watching her explain herself in fluster, she just opened the door and started walking straight ahead. - Hey sweetheart, do you know where you’re going?

  - I’ll google it. - she kept walking like a child whose mother told them no candy at a shop isle. Sebastian smiled to himself and started walking behind her as she asked Siri what cafes were close by. She shifted to the left as they walked into the centre Vegas. 

Sebastian always hated Vegas, it was loud and showy. He had enough to entertain himself with in the city but if he was asked to do a forever tour in one of the casinos that would be a no for him. The only good thing about the Vegas stops in all of his tours were that his bandmates wives would come to visit them so everyone would be off his back. Besides, the other good thing was that Sherrie would finally be off his back to go back to her job at the Hard Rock cafe. He wasn’t a fan of having the same girl next to him for longer than a week. 

He was so lost in thoughts that he didn’t notice the young writer stop in front of a smallish cafe. Once she stopped, he woke from his thought filled mind and looked at the building in front of him. It was small, homey, not like his style but he guessed there was a smaller chance of people noticing him. She leaned against the door, opening it and making the bell sound calling for the attention of some of the customers who had disgusted looks on their faces. Y/N gave them a shy smile, once again feeling embarrassed by the fact that she had interrupted someone’s meal. However, Sebastian was having none of that.

 - Isn’t this a lovely cafe, honey? - he wrapped his arm around her, gaining a confused look from her. - Sorry fellas, we’re a bit late in our honeymoon schedule, late for breakfast.

A bunch of the people who had given her dirty looks, immediately started to apologise making Sebastian grin to himself. There was something he knew for sure and it was that people loved not to stop a newly wed couples plan with their dirty looks, besides, if someone was gonna berate her for going for breakfast at 11 AM it would be him, not a bunch of lazy people. 

They got into a table by the window and Y/N took one of the laminated menus, her hair falling in front of her face as she studied what she could have for food. Sebastian found himself looking at her, the way her face twitched every time she saw something she didn’t like.

 - I found a typo. - she said, a huge smile in her face. - They wrote ceasar salad instead of caesar salad. 

 - You’re such a nerd. - he rolled his eyes, a small smile on his face as he returned to pick what to have for breakfast. An old lady reached their table, holding a small waitress pad. 

 - You two are such a beautiful couple, how long have you known each other.

 - We are ... - Y/N was about to come clean, she hated lying, but Sebastian was having the time of his life making people fell bad about giving them dirty looks, so he was not ready to let this go.

 - Five wonderful years, isn’t it so babe? - he reached his hand to touch hers but she still gave him the “touch me again, you’re dead” look. - Gotta enjoy our honeymoon before we start trying for a little one.

 - What can I get you two, sweethearts? - she asked and Y/N smiled at the mention of finally getting some food.

 - I’ll get a full English and Buck’s Fizz, thank you. - Sebastian handed her the menu as Y/N finished looking at the menu.

 - I’d like some Eggs Benedict with a Diet coke, please. - she handed her the menu too, putting her hands on top of her lap. The old woman gave her a puzzling look. - Is there something wrong?

 - Soda is not good if you’re trying for a little one. - she said making Y/N immediately shot a look that only translated into his death sentence.

 - You heard her babe, better not have that diet coke. - he tapped her hand, trying not to burst out laughing at the devastated look the writer had in her face. 

 - Freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice is better for fertility, sweetheart. I’ll add that to your order. - the old woman turned and walked back to the kitchen leaving Y/N to cross her arms at Sebastian who was wheezing in silence at her face. 

 - Damn daddy, I sure hope that juice makes me magically pregnant. - she mocked him, looking at the table next to her being served the nicest coldest glass of Diet Coke. Sebastian, on the other hand, grew flustered at her words, looking out into the window. - I can’t believe they would believe I would marry you, much less try for a baby.

 - Look, there is a lower chance of people thinking I’m me if we keep pretending we’re married and trying for a baby. 

 - That makes no sense. Besides, I’d rather die slowly than have to carry your offspring. - she mumbled as the lady came back with a tray containing their order and lacking her beloved Diet Coke. Y/N adored Diet Coke which was a controversial choice but back in university she used to down two cans of it per day while revising in the library. Cut to present day and she still enjoys a nice cold glass of Diet Coke with a slice of lemon. Instead, replacing heaven in a bottle, stood the freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice. She didn’t even like grapefruit, it was too sour for her. 

She placed the metal tray on the table, placing Sebastian’s order in front of him and Y/N’s in front of hers along with a bowl of wild berries. She looked up to the old woman, quizzing if she had ordered it or if it was a mistake.

   - Berries are good for the baby, sweetheart. It’s on the house. - she gave them a kind smile and left them to their food. Y/N shrugged, a gut feeling of guilt but yet again she loved berries and free berries sounded good to her.

  - So ... - she burst her egg yolks using her fork, her question stuck in her head and failing to come out. She didn’t want him to get annoyed at her, not when they had spent more than an hour without bickering. - Do you wanna get married and have kids? 

  - Too late for that. - he chuckled but it wasn’t his normal chuckle, it wasn’t that chuckle she had gotten used to.

  - You’re in your early 30′s, Sebastian. Besides, men are technically fertile until the end of their lives. 

  - Men like me don’t get married, we continue our life until no girl wants to lay down with us and then we disappear into oblivion. 

  - Is that what you want? Oblivion? - she questioned, one of her eyebrows raised at his comment. 

  - It’s not about what I want anymore. What about you, kids and engagement in the cards for you?

  - I used to want it but I don’t know. I don’t know if I want to get married if love is something that’s not everlasting. Besides, I do have to work. - she gave him that sweet smile of hers. - Why are you leaving the band? For real, why don’t you wanna be part of it anymore?

  - Just felt like it. 

  - You know, I don’t believe you’re a “just felt like it” type of guy so you gotta lie better to me. 

  - Anyhow, we’re moving into a hotel for the rest of the week so I won’t be annoying you during the nights anymore.

Chapter 19. The Escape

Darkness, the susurration of heavy breaths, and the stench of fear emanating from unwashed bodies greeted Jamie as he opened his eyes.

Every bone in his body hurt. It was impossible not to, the way he’d folded himself in the corner next to the door, trying to sleep with his back on the cold stone and his head propped on folded arms supported by his knees. 

He was the biggest man in the room and there was not much space, to begin with. It must have been a servant’s room, back when La Force was a house and not a prison. More people had unceremoniously thrown in the cell the previous day, and now they all huddled into the small room apprehending the massive public execution. Anticipating the end with frightened faces and heavy hearts. 

In the silence, he heard Madam Desmond sniffing. Her shrieks had been the loudest when the tall guard pushed the young blonde woman into the cell the day before. She was asking for mercy, begging the guards to let her go back to her children. Her cries fell on deaf ears. The guard didn’t seem to care that her husband was dead and the little ones would die of famine. The woman’s sobs had now morphed into quiet tears that never stopped rolling down her cheeks, intermittent with whispers of, “My little boys, my babes.” Every time she fell asleep she woke up with a startle and looked around in panic. The realisation that the cell was her real life and not a nightmare made her tears fall anew. 

It pained Jamie to see the woman as helpless as he was, and yet, there was nothing he could do to protect her or her children. They were all bound to the same fate and on his own part, he had prayed it would come sooner than later. The Lord had heard him -- a few more hours and everything would be over.

For a moment he wished he had children as well, if only to leave something of him behind when he’d be gone. But then he thought of the terror in the eyes of the little lad in Comte St. Germain’s manor and decided he wouldn’t want to bring another soul to live the cruelty of his world.

War was man’s most inhumane creation.

Jamie had considered dying for the revolution but he never thought it would be like this. He imagined a death honouring his beliefs and ideals, not one with the stain of the spy and betrayer to taint his name. He’d fall on swords and pikes if need be but he’d never fathomed the touch of the rope to be the last one he'd feel. He had imagined a bullet, ripping through his body. Blood running from the open wound, his hands on it, a red badge for the revolution. An honourable death. 

But honour in the revolution was like a shining gem in moving sand -- no matter how much you reached for it, there was always the chance to see it slipping between your fingers. One wrong move, one step in the wrong direction and you were painted as the coward. The betrayer, the spy. 

The thought left a bitter taste in Jamie’s mouth. He tried to swallow it, tried to remember every single piece of information he'd provided the past months but the image of his body hanging limb in front of everyone to see was so strong that it consumed every encouraging thought. That was the revolution, he tried to convince himself. Purpose and valour mingled with atrocities.

He brushed his greasy hair off his forehead and fixed his eyes at the little window, the only opening to the world outside. He wished it would rain during the hanging. He wanted to feel the drops against his face, to close his eyes and pretend he was still a wee lad, racing with Jenny and Ian from the fields to the house at Lallybroch, the hills soft and green beneath his heels.

But Jamie knew that he wouldn’t close his eyes that final moment, not even for the image of Scotland. Not even for the image of a beloved face. He’d try to find Murtagh in the crowd and he’d look him in the eye, be the man his father taught him to be. 

He wished Claire would grant him the favour he’d asked. He couldn’t imagine her being there, seeing him die. He wondered whether his last breath would sound like her name.

It was only the day before that she came to visit with Murtagh, but the hours lingered in that cell, making each day longer, endless. 

He was glad she’d come. To see her face, to touch her and taste her lips was freedom enough. He’d made his godfather promise that he’d take care of Claire as though she was Jamie’s lawfully wedded wife. And when he’d told him that Claire was family, the old man nodded in agreement. With a few words to send his love to Jenny, Ian and the children, he clasped his godfather’s hand between his own and took his leave of him in silence.

That had been all. Nothing else to settle.

Thoughts of Claire came unbidden and he closed his eyes again, imagining that he could feel her beneath his fingers, could see the countless hues of brown, auburn and gold her hair took under the sun. He fell asleep again. 

A hissed whisper woke him up. Someone calling his name, his first name. Alerted, he almost jumped up before a hand on his chest stopped him. The rest of the prisoners stirred, too. 

“It’s me,” he heard her say. “Claire.” And felt the happier and most miserable man on earth. He wanted to kiss her and he wanted to fight with her for coming back.

“You shouldna be here,” he said, but gripped the hand on his chest and pushed it against his body as though to imprint her touch on his skin. To keep something of her once she would be gone. A moment later, horror gripped his innards, overwhelming him.

Why was she in the cell?

“Why,” he croaked. “Why are ye in here, Claire? What did ye do?” He sounded more angry than afraid and her free hand moved to his mouth to silence him.

“Not now. We’re lucky you were sleeping here, so close to the door. Follow me.”

She took his hand and led him out the door as though he was a visitor in her house. Jamie barely had time to glance back, his eyes finding the pale face near the window, illuminated by the moon. Madam Desmond looked at him with wide eyes and mouth open, as though she couldn’t decide whether to speak her mind or not.

She didn’t get much of a chance. The next moment Claire closed the cell door behind them with a heavy sigh. They were now standing in the gloomy corridor, the guard and his lantern nowhere to be found. 

“What have you done?” he whispered, half in distress and half in awe. 

Claire fished a bunch of keys out of her skirts and locked the door. “This isn’t a one-man show,” she breathed, gaze fixed on the lock. “We need to rush.” 

She grabbed Jamie’s hand, the other one following suit, courtesy of the iron manacles he was wearing. Claire didn’t seem to mind. “I’ll explain once we’re out of here.” 

“Claire.” He pulled back. “Open that door, let me go back in there, and ran away from this place as fast as you can.” 

“What?” he asked in that English accent that he’d never expected to love.

“Let me go back in there. Lass…” He sighed and tried to find the words that would make her understand. “There is no way out of here, ken? We’ll get caught. You’ll get caught and they will kill ye for that, mo nighean donn.”

She was silent for a long moment and then said, “Do you trust me?”

“Of course I trust you, Claire, you just need to understand --”

“Do you trust me with your heart?” She sounded determined and furious in equal amounts. But there was pain there, too. Hurt. “Do you trust me with your life?”

Jamie pulled her to him, the need to feel her moving his manacled hands. “I do. You know I do. I trust you with everything I am.”

“Good. Then we’re going. The other option, in case you’re interested, is opening this door again so both of us can walk in.”

He didn’t have a chance to reply. With one hand feeling the wall and the other clasping Jamie’s so hard he thought it’d go numb, Claire led him away. Less than ten steps down the corridor, she stopped. 

“What --” Jamie started asking, but she hushed him. He pushed his back against the wall, face turned to her, straining to see what she was doing. He heard her fumbling with something until she opened a door he didn’t even know was there, and pushed him inside.

“Wait here.”

Instead of joining him in the room, Claire walked back to his cell. Light steps were heard in the corridor and a soft whisper followed them. Jamie narrowed his eyes but all he could see was pitched black darkness.

Claire scurried back to him as though she had counted every step it would take to reach him again. She closed the door of the room behind her and leaned against the stone wall. Her breaths came fast and when he reached for her hand he found it turned into a fist. 

“Who was there?” he asked with a frown, even though she couldn’t see him. “Where are we?”

“A passage for servants,” she replied, deliberately avoiding his first question. “Good thing this prison was once a rich man’s house, isn’t it?” she added, and even though there was the hint of a smile in her voice he could still feel her unease. There was a moment of silence. “Now we need to get out.”She huffed. “Simple as that.” She started moving away from the door, feeling the wall with a hand.

“Ah, I didna ken it was that simple, Sassenach,” he found the courage to joke. “Otherwise I would have found my way home sooner.”

“Say that again?” she asked. 

“I would come home sooner.”

“Not that. Sassenach. You know, when I left this place last time, I thought I’d never hear you call me that.”

“Sassenach, Sassenach, Sassenach,” he repeated. Jamie ran his hands up her arms, traced the soft skin of her long neck and finally cupped her face. He kissed her then, a kiss as soft as it was desperate. “I thought I’d never get the chance to do that again,” he said, sounding as breathless as he was.

Claire kissed him back but before he could get lost in her again, she pulled out of his arms. “We need to go. There is no time.”

This corridor was narrower than the main one. Claire lit a candle she carried with her and started a brisk walk, with Jamie trailing behind her. Their shadows danced primitive dances on the walls. 

They winded their way to the first flight of stairs keeping their steps light, untraceable. Thoughts of freedom and the possibility of getting caught and returning to that cell with Claire fought in Jamie’s mind, making his heart race in his chest. 

He had no other option but to follow her now, and he knew if they ended up safe and sound he’d follow her anywhere, always. This lass with the riot of curls, feelings and opinions. This brave, brilliant lass who shone her way through the darkness.

They didn’t encounter anyone in their way to the ground floor but stopped more than once for Claire to refer to the piece of paper she kept in her pocket. To Jamie’s surprise, less than ten minutes later they found themselves in what must have once been the laundry room. He smiled at the realization -- open access to the yard.

They had made it. No locked doors, no keys, no guards. Well, almost no guards. They would still have to somehow tackle the ones at the front entrance. 

“And now the hard part,” Claire whispered, making an eyebrow rise high on Jamie’s forehead. 

“Now comes the hard part?” he inquired incredulously, hidden behind the wall next to her. 

“We have to reach that wall there,” she gestured. “And climb it without being seen.” She started to unfurl a rope that was twisted around her waist. He hadn’t noticed it before.

“Christ, woman,” Jamie breathed and was rewarded with her smile shining under the silver moonlight. 

“Murtagh is waiting on the other side. We just need to wait a bit more.” Her gaze darted around the yard. She narrowed her eyes trying to spot anything close to the building’s walls. 

“Why?” he asked, following her gaze.

He didn’t have the chance to get a response when something crashed forcefully into his legs. “Milord!”

Not something -- someone. Jamie searched for Claire in the dark, his eyes wider than ever. 

“I know,” she said, remorsefully. “I didn’t want him here more than you do, but we needed the little rascal to get you out.”

Fergus was now hugging Claire, who had dropped on her knees to take him into her arms. “Mon chou,” she whispered, patting his head. “Are you alright?”

“Oui!” Fergus said with a wide grin. “Returned the keys, too, and the guard didn’t even realise they were gone.”

Jamie’s eyes darted between the two people smiling at each other. The keys. The light steps in the corridor. He wanted to ask how but Claire bet him to it, already replying to his question. 

“Did I ever tell you that Fergus used to take advantage of his light hands and feet before I met him? To… lighten people from the heavy burdens in their pockets?”

“I was the best pickpocket,” Fergus bragged, beaming. “But Milady didn’t like it and she made me swear never to do that again. Until today.”

“Right. And no more of that ever again,” Claire said, wagging a finger at the boy. 

“Oui,” he agreed, without much enthusiasm. 

“We need to go. Monsieur Forez can only distract the guard with studying the prisoners' list so much.”

Jamie had no idea who this man was and why he had helped Claire but he thanked him in silence and prayed to give them a bit more time.

“Any guards in the way, Fergus?”

“Oui, Milady. One on our left.”

Claire’s voice was tight when she spoke again. “Jamie, can you…”

“Make sure he won’t raise an alarm? Aye. Give me two minutes, Sassenach.”

The man was standing a few feet away with his back to them. He was short and thin and had his eyes fixed at the front gate. Jamie moved silently in the shadows until he came behind him. With an efficient blow on the guard’s head, he drove him senseless before the man could shout his surprise.

“Well, that was efficient,” Claire murmured once he was back and they moved to the prison walls.

Fergus went up first. They didn’t even use the rope. Jamie grabbed the boy from his waist and hoisted him up until his hands gripped the top of the stone wall. He climbed up and the muffled grunt heard a moment later signalled that his feet found the ground on the other side. 

"You first," Claire instructed, not looking at him. 

"Not a chance, lass. I'll see ye out of here before I even try climbing this wall." 

Claire fixed her eyes on him ready to argue her point but she must have seen his determination painted on his features because she quickly signed in defeat. 

They threw the rope and waited until someone tugged at it from the other side. 

"Go now." She didn't. "Claire,” he urged. “I'll follow the moment your feet touch the ground."

They didn’t kiss. A kiss would mean goodbye. Claire reached for the rope and started climbing up the wall. Once on the top, she turned around and slowly climbed down while Jamie held the rope from his side. 

He was alone again, with heightened senses and his pulse beating so hard he could hear it in his ears. He turned around, searching for guards, for an alarm, for people rushing in his direction.

Two tugs at the rope brought him out of his panicked state. He grabbed the rope and climbed up the wall in mere seconds. Not even thinking of trying to descend slowly, he jumped as soon as he saw that nobody was standing on the ground beneath him.

"That was so foolish," Claire said when she came next to him. "You could have strained your ankle."

Jamie broke into a smile and pulled her into him, claiming her lips. He felt her smile merging with his. Twin smiles -- wide, bright, joyful.

A heavy hand rested on his shoulder and he turned around only to be engulfed in another set of arms, this of his grandfather. Jamie realised that he was crying but didn't bother brushing his tears away. 

They walked briskly into the night, heading neither to St Antoine nor at his uncle's home. 

He thought of asking where they were going but soon realised that he didn't care. He was free again, with Claire, and Fergus, and Murtagh, and there was nothing more in the world he might need.

They had gotten him out and he trusted them to take him wherever they planned to.

There was no talking or slowing down until they reached an old neighbourhood along the Seine, the houses lavish and beautiful but less sumptuous than those close to Champs-Élysées. 

Jamie froze midstep.

There was no one else waiting for them in front of the carriage, but Frank Randall himself.

Protests, counterprotests, and violence (Washington Post) Far-right extremists and continued clashes between Black Lives Matter protesters and police this weekend renewed tensions in Portland, Minneapolis and other cities, pushing the country into its 80th day of consecutive demonstrations in some places. A group with ties to far-right organizations that have long targeted Portland gathered downtown Saturday afternoon to wave American flags and push back against Black Lives Matter protests challenging police brutality. The event ended with two gunshots. Protests in other cities also erupted into violence Saturday, as police grappled with small groups hijacking otherwise peaceful events. One clash ended in fistfights after Proud Boys marched in Kalamazoo, Mich. Police intervened as the Proud Boys retreated into a parking garage, about seven minutes after a large brawl broke out between members of the far-right group and their opponents. Officers arrested some counterprotesters who had come out to oppose the right-wing group. It isn’t working. Surveys indicate that instead of growing comfortable with air travel, more people are becoming skeptical about it. Belarus Protests (NYT) Minutes after President Aleksandr G. Lukashenko of Belarus vowed to stand firm against protesters he reviled as “rats,” “trash” and “bandits,” antigovernment demonstrators staged their biggest protest yet on Sunday to oppose a fraud-tainted presidential election a week earlier. Tens of thousands of protesters—some estimates put their number at well over 200,000—turned out in the center of Minsk, the capital, dwarfing a rally of Mr. Lukashenko’s supporters earlier in the day. It appeared to be the largest protest in the history of Belarus, a former Soviet republic that Mr. Lukashenko has led since 1994. Japan’s economy shrinks at record rate, slammed by pandemic (AP) Japan’s economy shrank at annual rate of 27.8% in April-June, the worst contraction on record, as the coronavirus pandemic slammed consumption and trade, according to government data released Monday. The Cabinet Office reported that Japan’s preliminary seasonally adjusted real gross domestic product, or GDP, the sum of a nation’s goods and services, fell 7.8% quarter on quarter. The annual rate shows what the number would have been if continued for a year. Japanese media reported the latest drop was the worst since World War II. But the Cabinet Office said comparable records began in 1980. The previous worst contraction, a 17.8% drop, was in the first quarter of 2009, during the global financial crisis.

Normalizing ties with Israel (Foreign Policy) Israel’s historic agreement normalizing diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates seems to have opened the way for other Gulf states to do the same. On Sunday, Israeli Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen said that Israel is exploring similar agreements with several countries in the Middle East and North Africa, suggesting that Bahrain and Oman were at the top of the list. Both countries praised the accord shortly after it was publicized, but have not confirmed whether similar deals with Israel were in the works.

Death toll from attack on Mogadishu hotel rises to 16 (Reuters) At least 16 people were killed in an attack on Sunday by al Shabaab on a seaside hotel in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, a government spokesman said, as the Islamist group launched a similar assault on a Somali military base. Sunday’s toll includes 11 victims and five assailants, Ismail Mukhtar Omar said in a tweet late on Sunday, adding: “Security forces lost one, 18 people were injured.” Militants stormed the high-end Elite Hotel in Lido beach, detonated a car bomb and then opened fire with assault rifles, the latest attack by al Shabaab, which has been battling the country’s central government since 2008.

ABILITY DESCRIPTION: Smoke Generation; allows Kiki to create smoke from his body which means he could blow smoke from his breath or his hands. Also can be easy to use to choke someone due to how dense it can be the more he gives.

LIMITATIONS: This type of power Kiki has would have to be used in a rather close range. It’s best used in a closed space to fill up a room with smoke for defense if needed. The man creates it but cannot manipulate it to have a wider range of things he could do. It’s also best used in close range fighting than long-range.

SIDE-EFFECTS: Naturally, smoke and gas are made from high heat to an object whether that’s in a solid form or liquid form. To compare, when Hideki uses his smoke generation powers it does take a toll on him causing body deterioration in a sense. In a mild aspect; if Hideki plays with his powers lightly from his hands or mouth that would cause dehydration. At first, he would get very thirsty before the water in his body drains from him causing his skin to go from fair to paper-thin. As for if Kiki was to use his powers for defense, meaning multiple smoke blasts, smoke breath, and hotboxing a room or building the side effects go passed dehydration and off to skin issues. Kiki’s body starts to overheat pretty much burning himself. He’s never gone too far with using his powers to that extent just because the pain is excruciating but he does have scars on his chest, where his body’s core is, from times where he’s scratched the surface.  

How he arrived at Neocity:

They say if you play with fire you will get burned. As a young boy, Hideki has always been interested in fire. He loved the sounds it made, the scent it left, and the look of it. Watching a flame dance either from the wick of a candle or a roaring fire of a bit in someone’s backyard were both mesmerizing. Kiki still remembers hearing his mother’s voice yelling at him, telling him to not play with matches, or keep his hands away from the gas stove but he was always pulled towards it. He wouldn’t be able to tell you what kind of pull it was but it felt otherworldly. Maybe it was fate.

At the age of 11, in the one-bedroom apartment he grew up in with his young mother, Hideki was awakened from his bed in a trance, slowly walking out of his mother’s arms to make his way to the one spot in the place he was forbidden to be in; the kitchen. Completely hypnotized, the young boy was able to click on all the burners on the stove, cranked up to high just watching. All it took was one wild spark to jump from the stove into a kitchen towel sending this run-down apartment to a wild blaze sending the whole complex into a frenzy as it spread throughout the rest of the 3rd floor and up the half of the building. When first responders found Hideki he had passed out from the smoke and his young mother had been trapped in the bedroom unable to get out. The Japanese man only remembers waking up in the ICU to his conservative grandfather there at his side with a deep scowl. Kiki then moved in with his grandfather who lived in a very traditional home out in Kyoto. Moving from Osaka to Kyoto was hard for such a young man especially growing up with his strict grandfather. Constant fights at home, fights at school, running away only to be dragged back. Hideki was a very angry child and his grandfather was having none of it petty enough to want to give his only grandchild hell for being the reason his daughter was dead. The last time Kiki was escorted home by the police after running away was the last time. His grandfather was on a rampage, so pissed off his blood was boiling but what he didn’t know was so was Hideki’s. One second Kiki was shoved into a wall and the next second he watches this blast of dark inky smoke whoosh from his hand the same time he’s pushing away the old man’s face. The 17-year-old wasn’t even thinking anymore, it all just came out naturally, blast after blast of smoke hitting his guardian in huge puffs until his screams had more smoke pouring out of his mouth into his grandfather’s face until he’s passed out. Weak and dizzy now, the teenager rushes out of his house and into Japan’s streets.

Fast forward a couple of years later, rumors of a city in South Korea being open for people with powers circulated in Japan for the nth time, just loud enough to catch the 22-year-old Hideki’s attention.  The young man knew of others in the world that had their quirks, some interesting powers, but they were all kept secret. People with powers were always either targeted or feared, even for someone living in a shelter, but Hideki was willing to give Neo City a shot. Who knew two years after moving to Korea, Hideki would be a better place than he could have ever imagined?

Darcy Palmer - (tw death) Translator and interpreter who traveled the world and fell in love with a woman high up in a gang (unknowing of all of that) that resulted in her witnessing the murder of the woman she loved, almost dying herself and her own sister getting killed in the process as well. Now she has to make her way through life in witness protection under a completely new name and identity, separated from the rest of her family while having to deal with her demons in the dead of the night.

She’s a kickass criminal defense lawyer and in different versions of her she was either fighting with any kind of clients or specifically protecting crime syndicates.

Isabel de la Vega - My narcissist, self-centered merm whose backstory resembles the little mermaid’s story in many ways, but is so completely different from that fictional character. She arrives to Soapberry, a town where the supernaturals can openly walk around and be themselves, running from her past mistakes and failures and tries to make a new life for herself while also having a superiority in her, a constant need to be right, be the center of attention and not share anything personal about herself.

Uhhhh, why are you doing this to me? How am I supposed to choose just ONE? I’m going to cheat and say top 5 here too because I’m horrible and can’t be helped. In alphabetical order, bc I can’t make an actual top list ranking them, but I still need some kind of order.

Alice Fortescue/Amos Diggory (@theeriinyes) - my first Alice ship that started out as a kind of “oh we won’t go there because it’s not canon” and ended up with us absolutely going there because we couldn’t help it. They grew up together, fell in love slowly. He was a playboy, she was the mother hen. He wanted nothing more than to keep his family safe, she wanted to fight in the war beyond reason or logic. They loved each other more than anything and it’s been years and years and I’m still not over them honestly. They had a baby in the mids of the war and after Alice suffered the fateful ending of hers, Amos visits her every day, hoping that she’d wake up one day and remember him and their family. And now lemme just go and weep.

Ariel/Eli - My first ever big otp in RPing. Ariel was my OUAT indie who was struggling with having her memories back, dealing with the real world and the fairy world being so different and wanting to leave Storybrooke to explore and have adventures while not being able to because of the border-amnesia thing, while Eli was a wandered who had a shadow inhabiting his body since he was a kid, they were one and a same at this point and the two of them accidentally met and fell in love and oh boy was it beautiful. I loved them so freaking much and even though I’ve lost touch with the player of Eli since then and it took me incredibly long to even find Ariel’s old blog, I still think about them sometimes and weep over how beautiful they were.

Darcy Palmer/Diego Chavez (@diegojaimechavez) - Honestly they came as a surprise I think to both of us because we originally planned to have a completely platonic relationship between these two, but then they both went and had feelings for one another and there was no stopping them. “Enemies” to friends to lovers where they were forced to work together considering Diego was charged with keeping Darcy safe, so even though they were constantly fighting with each other, they couldn’t just stay away due to their situation, and then slowly they started opening up to one another and realizing their own errors and finding the good and lovable in the other and now they are dummies in love who refuse to admit or say it out loud but still have such huge trust and respect for each other that nobody is breaking that.

Carlota Fuentes/Gianluca Romano (@pedrazamaria​) - I mean, any of our babies could be on here, I could have really just made a list of top 5 just out of our babies but I restrained myself lol. But these two. One is the daughter of the leader of a huge gang while the other is a drug dealer in said gang. They didn’t really notice each other until one night they hook up and then they fall in love without meaning to. One never really looked for love but found it with him, the other was never considered worthy of love until she came along and they were happy. And then shit went down, torture and hatered and misunderstanding and they are pulled apart and for years they barely even interact, only for a family tragedy to bring them close again. Him hurting her on accident, without intent, and then her hurting him back in ways she knows would cause most pain because she is trying to protect her heart. It’s a mess, it’s tragical, they probably should stay away from each other, but they love each other too much to not gravitate back to each other sooner or later.

Alice Fortescue/Evan Mulciber - Unfortunately I can’t tag anyone here either, and I know this looks weird and unnatural to anyone who knows just the tiniest bit about the Marauders Era, but I swear it worked and it was beautiful. Alice was the one who would give the benefit of the doubt to anyone, Evan was the misunderstood antihero, ruthless to most but fiercely protective over those whom he considered family. They dated and were arranged to be married. And then the Mary incident happened and Alice broke things off, but the arranged marriage stayed. They were platonic, but Alice still saw the good in him and he still considered her family. He was impulsive and she tried to think through things, he was blamed for so many things he didn’t actually commit and she saw through the lies and knew he wasn’t to blame. It was complicated and simple all at the same time. And as weird and strange as this pairing sounds, I loved them so, so, so incredibly much.

16. How long have you been roleplaying?

It’s really fucking insane to write it down, but it’s been close to 10 years now. I started RPing around the end of S1 of Vampire Diaries. It was on LiveJournal, I brought Anna back from the dead and played her in a Hungarian RP. After that, I transitioned to Tumblr and did an Ariel OUAT indie for a long while before I fell into the world of groups and the rest is history.

19. What do you miss about old roleplay? (Roleplay before 2017?)

The amount of time I had to dedicate to it. I actually started working in 2017, before that I was in uni and high school and I remember having so much more time on my hand. And with that I miss the speed that I could move plots along. These days a lot of the time I can only get through my replies and then I already have to go to sleep or have other things to do, while before I could just do back and forths almost daily and that was so great. (Then again, back then my replies were mostly like one paragraph long, now I prefer long-ass paras, so that might be a contributing factor in it too.)

Five Hargreeves x Original Fem! Character

“Five?!” Ash calls rising from the table as the boy in question runs out of the room

“Number 8 sit back down you were not excused” Dad snaps

Ash ignores him and takes off after Five, hoping he hasn’t gotten far

“Number 8 get back here!” He yells as she’s out the door

He’s a few feet away when she catches up to him

“Five please don’t do this!” She pleads grabbing ahold of his jacket.

Right as she grabs it he spacial jumps and they’re in the middle of spring. She looks around stunned loosening her grip on his jacket as he continues walking. he actually did it..

“Not ready my ass”

His words break her out of her daze as she runs to catch up with him grabbing him.

“Five!” She calls again as he spacial jumps a second time now sending them into winter. She’s caught off guard as the sudden gust of cold air and snow literally takes her breath away. She runs this time grabbing his hand right as he jumps again only this time they’re surrounded by ruins. He finally stops and looks around,shocked. Ash does too wondering what the hell happened. And suddenly their eyes lock, they look down at their joined hands, and quickly separate.

Without speaking they both run back to what was once The Academy.

Five stands at the doorway and yells into the rubble, calling for their siblings

“Grab on” he says as a blue energy radiates from his fist, but nothing happens, he tries a few more time with no changes he sinks to his knees.

They were trapped.

Ash sinks down next to him and they sit in silence.

“I didn’t even know you grabbed me.. if I did..” he doesn’t finish his sentence. “I’m so sorry”

“Apologizing won’t change anything” she says shaking her head. “What now?”

“Maybe we should build a shelter?” Ash says looking over at Five.

A few days ago they had taken refuge in what was left of the library, one of the few buildings with walls up. It worked for now but they were gonna need better protection once it got cold.

“I was thinking underground? I can get us deep enough to protect us from the wind?”

“What about when it rains? Or snows? We’d get buried” Five answers closing his book and shaking his head.

“Oh.. nevermind”

“What about above ground? Maybe you can get a few walls and a roof up? There’s plenty of earth to work with.” He says hopefully

She smiles and nods and he smiles back

“How’s the water situation coming?”

They discovered that while the library did have running water, it was very polluted. Luckily Ash figured out that she could manipulate the water away from whatever was polluting it and was currently boiling it, at Five’s insistence after he read about it.

“I think it’s okay..” she says putting the water in two cups, she grabs one and partially freezes it before handing it to Five.

“Cheers” He says before they both hesitantly drink. It’s not bad

“Ash. You are amazing”

“Why did you come after me?” Five asks a few months later.

It was evening and they had retired into their shelter for the night. Ash used her pyrokinesis to light a fire in the shelter to keep them warm while Five got their bed set up. It was a part of the routine they established.

“I didn’t want you to leave, I was trying to stop you” She looks at him in the dim lighting.

“Why?” He asks staring intently at her

“Because you’re my best friend and I didn’t want to lose you.”

“Dad I’m scared.” Ash said clinging to the Railing of a building downtown. She was standing on the edge, the only thing keeping her from falling was the railing she had a tight grip on

“When a mother bird feels like her babies are ready to fly, often she’ll push them out of the nest” he said prying her fingers off the railing. “Enough dilly dallying”

He pushed her her backwards sending her plummeting several stories and fast.

Reginald watches for a few moments before sighing and shaking his head. She wasn’t gonna catch herself this time.

“Number Five.” He signals to the boy standing next to him. He teleports down and grabs her just before she becomes a part of the sidewalk and sends them back into the roof.

She falls to her knees bringing Five with her and sobs as he looks down at her worried.

Reginald shakes his head walking over to the two and forcing Ash to her feet, leading her back to the edge.

“Disgraceful.” He says pushing her over the edge again.

“Hey where’d you go?” Five asks pulling her from her thoughts. He was now sitting next to her in front of the fire.

She shakes her head.

“I...” she can’t bring herself to finish the sentence.

It’s now or never she thinks suddenly leaning over and pressing her lips against his.

He hesitates for a few moments before kissing her back, they break apart and he rests his forehead against hers.

“I know.. me too” they stay like this for a minute before he rises holding out his hand. “Let’s get some sleep, we have a long day tomorrow”

Their relationship blossomed slowly after that fateful night. Hand Holding while going on supply runs became a common occurrence.The first time it happened was the very next day and no one made a big deal out of it.

They decided to head to head out a little farther than normal, their sources nearby starting to dwindle and it was about an hour’s walk. Five was pulling the cart behind them and Ash had made a joke about building a sailboat on wheels to get them places faster. Five laughed, seriously considering it, and silently grabbed her hand, lacing his fingers through hers.

Next came kissing before one of them left. It was inevitable, sometimes they’d have to split up. This particular occasion was a few years later; Five had left to scavenge and Ash stayed at the library to attempt to start a garden- She and Five ate what they could find and she was tired of cockroaches. She got the idea while looking the grass poke through the roads on their walk a few days ago.

“I’ll be back before dark I promise” he said leaning in and kissing her before leaving. After that it would happen every time one of them left, even if it was just for a few minutes.

The third Milestone was actually sleeping together and by that I mean actually sharing a bed ,or in their case pile of blankets. You’d think that they’d instantly huddle together at night for warmth, it’s survival 101, but those first few weeks after their arrival they avoided physical contact at all costs. Ash was terrified to touch Five, the last time she did she ended up in the apocalypse; and Five avoided touching her out of guilt, seeing his adoptive younger sister afraid to touch him really upset and made him feel worse. But that changed after they found their sibling’s dead bodies. That night Five woke up screaming and without thinking Ash held him until he calmed down, they ended up falling asleep like this and it was the best night’s sleep either of them had gotten in weeks. After that it became an unspoken rule between them to sleep “together”.

Five returned around sunset. “I have a surprise for you” he said digging though his cart and pulling out a box with a crank. He starts turning it as Ash watches with curiosity. When he opens it she gasps. It’s a music box! And it’s playing ‘La Vie en Rose’.

“Natasha Hargreeves, may I have this dance?” He asks removing his hat & mask. She nods taking his hands and lighting a few “candles” around them. “You’ve been busy” he says pulling her close. She rests her cheek against his and as they slow danced she subconsciously started humming along and he pulls away from her smiling.

“You’re singing”

“Oh.. sorry”

“Don’t apologize. Delores said you have a really pretty voice”

She laughs before continuing to sing along

“And when you speak angels sing from above, everyday words seem to turn into love songs. Give your heart and soul to me, and life will always be la vie en rose”

“Is this what I think it is?” Ash asks looking at Five who’s attempting to hide his nerves behind a confident smirk.

“I mean it’s been 11 years, it was bound to happen”

The 2 now young adults were at their home base having some rare downtime when Five suddenly says “here catch” before throwing something Ash’s way. Ash didn’t really think anything of it because Five threw things to her often, and vise versa, only this time when she opened her hand she saw a handmade ring.

“Five.. I don’t know what to say..”

“Just say yes”

She grabs a piece of metal from her scrap pile and holds it in her hand, shaping it as she walked towards Five. She tosses the bit of metal to him and he catches it with a disappointed look before realizing it wasn’t the ring he made Ash, but one she made him.

“If we’re doing this you’ll need a ring too” she says closing the space between them and leaning up to kiss him.

They kiss for a moment before he pulls away and gives her a confused look

“When did you start controlling metal?”

Five sighs and turns to Ash.

“The first human we’ve seen in over 40 years and you don’t like her?”

“She acts like you survived the past 40 years on your own and I just sat on my ass twiddling my thumbs”

“Well we both know you didn’t. You don’t have to like her, I just have to work for her”

“I don’t know..”

“It’s only for a few years, I’m really close to solving this equation.”

“Do we have a deal?” The handler calls out to Five.

“On one condition” he grabs Ash’s hand “She goes with me”

“That can be arranged”

Over the years wherever (or whenever) Five went Ash went. Together the two became a lethal pair; Five exceeding everyone’s already high expectations and Ash surprising everyone, most notably for assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand-Gavrilo Princip was more focused on his sandwich and missed… twice.

She was with him at the Kennedy assassination when he finally figured it out.

As he focuses a blue portal appears and an extinguisher of all things come flying at them.

“Together?” He yells over the chaos

“Together.”

They push their way through the portal and fall through crashing to the ground. Five looks over at Ash before looking down at himself.

“Shit.” He says standing. They were both 13 again.

“Am I the only one who sees a little Number Five and Natasha?”

Where did you two go?

“The future.” Five says handing Ash half of his peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich

“It’s shit by the way.” Ash says before taking a bite.

“Called it” Klaus says

“If you were in the future the whole time why are you two still kids.?”

“Yeah… I need you to explain that one too?” Ash says looking up at him.

Five rolls his eyes at her but starts explaining “In the end, I had to project our consciousnesses forward into a suspended quantum state version of ourselves that exists across every possible instance of time.”

Ash looks at him and blinks

“That makes no sense”

“Well it would if you were smarter”

Ash snickers as Diego has to be held back by Luther, who’s huge.

“Eww.” She says opening her wardrobe and glaring. All she has are those god awful uniforms. Sighing she grabs the nearest dress .

She frowns as she looks at her reflection. Other than being almost a foot shorter and hating her uniform, her curly hair was now too long for her liking, she kept it long when she was younger but 10 years into the apocalypse she started cutting it, keeping it no longer than a bob. She considers asking mom to cut it when Five suddenly appears.

“You look beautiful” he tries

“I look ridiculous..”

“Yeah. These uniforms are shit.” He says earning a laugh. He teleports to Ash’s shelf, “think of it this way” he says looking through her records, finding one, and putting it in her record player “we have more time to spend together”

‘La vie en rose’ starts playing and she smiles

“You remembered?”

“How could I forget? It’s kind of our song.” He pulls her close and they sway “these next few days are about to be rough”

“I know.. do you think they’ll find us?”

“It’s inevitable.” He slightly pulls away and looks at her, “If they somehow capture you.. give me a day to find you. They’ll probably come after you first to use you as leverage and since they want to think you’re ordinary we should take advantage of it”

Ash nods before resting her head on his shoulder, they’re soon disturbed by a knock on Ash’s door.

The Huntress From Hell (Part 11)

Summary: Luci Samael Morningstar daughter of Lucifer and the angel Azrael . Marked as the heiress of hell, Luci might be in a smidge of trouble when she falls into an alternate universe. Here demons run rampant and angels aren’t so high and mighty. With monsters lurking around every corner she needs to turn tail and get the hell out of there. If only. Luci was not the type to revel in the so called delight of hellish torture. But boy did it feel good as hell to be back beside the throne, where she belonged. Crowley had been delighted with the newfound level of loyalty from the demons of hell. Each becoming all the more cautious of the self proclaimed king now that a Morningstar sat at his side.

Crowley had even sweetened the deal for Luci. He'd proclaimed her his own heir two weeks after working together. It seemed he'd much rather her be the next in line for the throne over Lucifer. Here the demons weren't blindly loyal or at least Crowley wasn't. The rest hailed Lucifer as a god and that intrigued Luci beyond measure.

"I'm bored!" Luci proclaimed from he smaller throne beside the kings. She eyed the quivering demon who'd been droning about his latest deal. "Let's go stir some trouble."

Crowley silently dismissed the poor excuse of a cross roads demon and stood. Holding out a hand for Luci, which she took, Crowley zapped them to some random crossroad. An aged man was hopping from foot to foot looking rather afraid. He turned and took in the two of them.

"Mr. Pendleton, I presume." Crowley gave the man an adders grin. Pendleton turned and seemed to gape at the pair. He'd expected someone else then. "The names Crowley. I understand you've been in dealings with one of my underlings. But you, piggy bank, you are a big fish, and I wanted to do you the honor of sealing this deal personally."

Pendleton gulped "She said the deal would be sealed with a kiss-" Crowley nodded. "What about the girl? Can't I make a deal with her?"

Crowley snickered and flashed his red eyes, "I'm afraid Luci here isn't in the business."

The man who was by no means a modest man, if the limo behind him were anything to go off, simply stared. Homophobic then. Luci like many of the celestials in the Beta Universe, including her father and Mazikeen, didn't have a preference of partner. She always found racism, sexism and the likes to be the pinocle of human stupidity.

Luci matched Crowley's grin and began to stalk slow threatening circles around the man. He quivered under their impassive gazes. Crowley seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself as he poked fun at the man's fear.

"Going once-" Crowley pushed his face up into the mans. "Going twice."

Pendleton gave one final shudder of disgust before lip locking the king of hell. Over the past weeks working beside Crowley in such matters of hell, Luci had come to view him as a brotherly - almost uncle like - figure. So the sight of him full on lip smacking someone was enough to make her want to gag. But she hid it behind the well practise Morningstar smirk that had kept even the most violent of demons in check.

Yes, Luci made a fabulous hunter but it seemed right to be back here - even in another universe. Back at the side of the king of hell. Luci Samael Morningstar was where she belonged, as the Heiress of hell. She wasn't sure why she'd denied that much. When she was doing it by choice it was almost as fun as being a detective in LA or a Huntress wherever the wind took her.

Luci flopped onto the couch beside Crowley, handing him a glass of scotch. She swirled her own staring at the black and white film that seemed to drone on. Huffing she grabbed the remote off Crowley and flipped through a few channels. Cooking show? No. News? Boring. Drama series? Nope, nope definitely not. Especially since Crowley had insisted on binging the last one they'd watched. Action movie? Meh, okay- The screen turned black.

"What did you do?" Crowley lurched forward, swiping for the remote. The lights flickered off. "Ah. That'd explain it." He downed the last of the alcohol before stalking out.

Throwing the remote dejectedly she threw her legs across the vacated couch, pouring a second glass of scotch for herself. Sipping delicately she waited for the electricity to click back on. Only it didn't. Placing her glass down carefully she stood. Luci glanced around the room, marking the exits and quietly unsheathing Nightbane.

Luci inched for the door scanning each shadow as she went. Heiress or no, she was no idiot. A gun shot rang through the mansion, followed by a second. Luci was running for the hall Crowley had left through before she could give it another thought. She found two dead demons and a devil trapped rug. Luci followed the hall up to Crowley's office and barged right through the door.

"You realise two of the demons are lying dead outside right," Luci shoved Nightbane back into it's sheath. She took a double take of the room, paused and looked at the two visitors. She blinked.

Sam and Dean Winchester stared at Luci. Their Huntress friend who had just spoken so casually to the king of hell after being missing for almost half a year. Luci Morningstar stared right back at the Winchesters. She'd by no means missed the rumours about their breaking the sixty-sixth seal and releasing this universes crazed Lucifer. Whatever that meant.

"Sam, Dean." Crowley shoved his hands into his pockets. "Meet my Protégée."

"Luci?" They whirled upon her. "You've been working with a demon? The frickin' king of demons!"

Luci raised her hand, "An anti-Lucifer demon, for anti-Lucifer purposes."

There was a pause that stretched between them. Luci looked to Crowley who simply winked and disappeared. Asshole. Chuckling slightly Luci lowered her hands, looking from Dean who held Ruby's blade to Sam who held the Colt.

"You wanna explain what's going on?" Dean glared before hissing, "Or is there no need."

Luci grinned, looping her thumbs through her belt. "While you boys kick started the apocalypse, I've been amassing a small army of favours. Thursday in Carthage, Missouri Lucifer has a date with that gun of yours."

There was a moment of silence before the brothers lowed their weapons. "An army?"

"Human and Demons, lets just say they owe me a few. What d'you say we go save the world boys?" Luci held the door open.

Dean gave a childishly excited grin at the thought of an army on their side for once. Even as he said - "This doesn't make up for running off to work with a demon." - she knew it was more then enough to make up for it.

Since someone requested a character map for my fic A Single Reason, I’ve gone ahead and created this little puppy. Hope this helps anyone who is/was interested. These are all the OC/borrowed characters who have actually any important impact in the story, as well as a few facts you might not know about them.

Epitaph - a mafia-like organization operating throughout the whole of Japan. Drug and illegal firearms trade. Human trafficking. Assassination. Information trade. You name it, Epitaph is probably doing it. Currently is run by the Big Four and was, at the start of the story, almost 10,000 members and associates strong. Has currently gone to ground after a tenth of personnel were apprehended by police following Izuku, Momo and Hitoshi’s desertion.

Alkaid - Current leader of Epitaph

Real Name unknown. Quirk: “SUPERNOVA” (ability to ionize gases into hot plasma). Mysterious and secretive, little is fully understood about her other than she has a love of mythology and traditionally feminine appearances. Izuku once saw her snap a man’s spine over her knee a la Bane from Batman.

Senri - Second in command of Epitaph, as well as functional Head of Business

Real Name - “Senri ???”, wanted Momo to call him “Gin” for reasons unknown. Quirk: “HAIR STRINGS” (can manipulate his hair as a prehensile tool). Has a very survival-of-the-fittest mentality, with some (never explicitly shown) p*d*philic tendencies regarding young girls. Doesn’t actually sleep with anyone under the minimum age, though, because he’s trash, but he’s not fucking stupid. Is childhood best friends with Ken and is a former accountant. Also the only one of the Big Four who, arguably, can’t fight.

Blessed - Chief Enforcer

Real Name unknown. Quirk: UNKNOWN. Was a hero before taking a criminal apprehension too far, causing the death of purse snatcher. Is now a wanted criminal was a warrant out for her arrest. Brutal and militaristic, she was the Suzumebachi’s primary trainer before their defections/deaths, as well as a frequent tormentor of Izuku for his quirklessness. She is the one who executed Changeling for attempting to defect.

Ken - Human Resources Manager

Real Name unknown. Quirk: UNKNOWN. Former underground illegal quirk-fighting champion turned villain, Ken is mostly just a career criminal out to take care of his aging parents and keep Senri out of too much trouble. He still manages to operate inside Epitaph and with it’s members with no shred of remorse or shame, and is Senri’s best friend, so, really, how good can he be?

Executives (Aka, Bungo Stray Dog’s characters lol) - as a side note, all their quirks are their gifts in BSD.

Akutagawa Ryunosuke - Izuku’s former Handler and tormentor. Blessed assigned his charge when the boy was 11 and he has hated Izuku ever since. Cruel, temperamental and sickly.

Hirotsu Ryuro - Hitoshi’s former Handler, as well as Head of Torture, Interrogation and Assassination. Was training Hitoshi to be his apprentice and eventual successor when he “retires”.

Ozaki Koyo - Assassin and Momo’s former Handler. Looked after and genuinely cared for Momo in her own way, but only started really recognizing Momo after she voluntarily murdered Phantom’s killer. She and Alkaid also coached Izuku on how to hone his natural charisma with speech-craft.

Other Members

Sakura ??? - Wanted for trespassing, arson and cyber-terrorism, he was Momo’s programming and infiltration trainer. 

Hoshigaki - Expert Spy, Assassin and Infiltrator. Chageling’s former Handler before his defection and subsequent execution. Also is Alkaid’s older cousin. She and Blessed had a “thing” some years back.

Kurosaki - A smuggler who managed to get into the Big Four’s graces just enough to be assigned as Hecatoncheir’s Handler. He was murdered when she successfully managed to escape the organization. A member of the original squad sent to kidnap the kids.

Agent Phantom - Real Name “Nijima Aya”. Quirk: “CHAMELEON” (mimic any color or texture visible to the human eye). She and Momo were closer than any of the other Suzumebachi agents. Dies to a villain raid days before her 10th birthday.

Agent Changeling - Real Name “Shouji Kaku”. Quirk: “STAND-IN” (place an optical illusion over anything he touches). Obsessed with stars and space and was a great story-teller. Shouji Mezo’s paternal cousin. Became suicidal towards the end of his life. Was executed after his fellow Suzumebachi aided him in a failed escape attempt 10 months before the story starts. He was 15.

Agent Hecatonchier - Real Name “Yosano Naomi”. Quirk: “REJECTION” (psycho-kinetically push objects withing a 10-foot radius away from her). The eldest Suzumebachi who became the group’s established leader, mother and older sister all in one. She loved and cared for her fellow Suzumebachi extensively. Successfully managed to escape Epitaph 4 months before the story starts and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. She is currently 16, approaching 17.

The Yaoyorozu Family

Yaoyorozu Hisoka - Momo’s mother. Once wanted to be a hero, but became scared after her mother was involved in a car-bombing that left her permanently disabled, then transferred to the Business course. There, she met her future fiance and the father of her child, Tsuzuki Nagare, who would die in a car accident before their marriage. Founded the Yaoyorozu Corporation with Nagare to create premier heroics equipment, supplies and medical equipment. Became a secret underground hero a la Batman called “Lightscreen”, after Momo was taken. Her quirk, “Light Image”, allows her to generate solid light constructs. Her quirk combined with Nagare’s “Toxin Excretion” to make Momo’s “Creation” quirk.

Yaoyorozu Junpei - Momo’s maternal grandfather. A bit of a traditionalist, and a quirkless artist specializing in geometric patterns. He fought hard to gain every inch of his success throughout his life. Was in an artist’s slump before meeting Chidori. She rescued him from a villain attack, and he’s been inspired by her ever since.

Yaoyorozu Chidori - Momo’s maternal grandmother. A courageous and vivacious woman, she was the Shimmering Sorceress, the number 15th Ranked hero of her generation. She saved the isle of Shikoku from the echo terrorist, Chloroshield. In her 40′s, she convinced to retire after being involved in a car bombing that necessitated the amputation of her right leg. Her quirk is “Shimmer”, which grants her the ability to bend photons to her will.

The Shinsou Family

Shinsou Izuna - Hitoshi’s father. A free-lance graphics designer now employed by Hisoka and family man who wants to be supportive of his son, but is also intimidated by his large criminal record. Hitoshi and he share the same quirk, though Hitoshi’s is admittedly more powerful than Izuna’s. He likes working outside, which is part of the reason he’s so tan in the warmer months.

Shinsou Namani - Hitoshi’s mother. A former office worker turned Hisoka’s at-home secretary. Her family, the Seiwara, have a history of mental illnesses stemming from the fact that their family line has a gene that means their brains under-produce dopamine and serotonin. She loves her family very much, and thinks her son and husband are too much like each other despite not spending much time together. Her quirk allows her to sense the neural pathways in other people’s brains, giving her a very limited kind of general, multi-target telepathy.

Shinsou Noriko - Hitoshi’s bold and stead-fast younger sister. She grew up hearing stories of her missing older brother. Now that he’s back, she’s determined to get to know him and help him get back to normal life. Not being able to go to school and hang out with her friends bothers her more than she wants to admit. Her quirk is a mix of Nanami’s and Izuna’s, which allows her to implant powerful suggestions into people’s heads at will.

Other Characters (aka, the ones who have only appeared once or twice, or are recurring, yet don’t have a name)

Tanizaki Junichirou - A BSD character who, in this verse, is a budding politician. One of Alkaid’s information brokers wanted him taken out. Izuku killed him in chapter 2.

Chief Umeji - Tsukauchi’s boss and head of police in Musutafu. A hard-assed but fair man who trusts Tsukauchi’s judgement. His quirk gives him flowering plum-branch hair. His spouse is runs a flower shop painted with a blue rose. They have an adopted daughter. He appeared in chapter 7.

Kaiun Raiyo - Momo, Izuku and Hitoshi’s therapist. Her office is a huge swimming pool due to her aquatic-based mutation quirk causing her trouble on land. Got rejected from a hero course and took the time to try and figure her life out. Her quirk is based off the Abyssal Lagiacrus from Monster Hunter Tri/3U. Appears in chapter 12.

Probation Officer - Momo, Izuku and Hitoshi’s probation officer. He’s cold at first, but seeing the kids interact with their supervisors and hearing, week after week, of their good behavior, he’s starting to soften up. Appears in chapters 8, 9, 10 and 13. He might get a name. Maybe. Eventually.

Like a lot of so-called desert blues, this is only chill out music until you read the lyrics, for example, “The Tuareg people must know/you can consider France an enemy/no better than Algeria who stands in our path.” Even if militant nationalism, no matter who’s calling for it, isn’t your thing, Ahmed Ag Kaedy’s weathered, throaty voice and plangent, monophonic guitar flights which are as evocative, bitter, and seemingly ephemeral as campfire smoke, make Akaline Kidal well worth hearing. And like campfire smoke, they’ll stick with you well into the next day.

  Astralingua — Safe Passage (Midnight Lamp)

Safe Passage by Astralingua

Quietly, precisely odd, this elaborately instrumented, baroquely arranged folk experiment shrouds whispery threads of poetry in eerie landscapes of stringed instruments, pennywhistles and gently massed harmony. The music, mostly the work of composer Joseph Andrew Thompson but aided by singer Anne Rose Thompson, runs much in line with goth folk outfits like Gravenhurst and Boduf Songs, in the way that dread seeps up from the floorboards and beauty has a spectral, semi-transparent air; you could make a case for an Elliott Smith singing in front of Clogs comparison in a couple of the songs. Yet the music faces forward, not back into misty folklorics. “Space Blues” takes a turn towards proggy Pink Floyd-ish visions of interstellar travel on “Space Blues” and while “Poison Tree” heads off into to tremulous orchestral confessionalism, a la Sufjan Stevens. It is all very pretty and a little disturbing.

This pan-Euopean combo rethinks one of the most cobweb-festooned configurations in jazz. To overcome the piano trio’s over-familiarity, they combine idiosyncratic personal techniques with a disciplined collective approach. Swedish bassist Petter Eldh and German drummer Christian Lillinger have forged their concord in a couple other groups; the former is assertively melodic and big-toned, the latter quick and ubiquitous. With so much happening in the engine room, they need a partner who values balance, and they have found one in Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler. Her playing is fleet and articulate, and her ideas feel complete in themselves, but they also leave ample space between the root notes for her partners to exercise their formidable muscles without banging into any harmonic walls.

 Maxine Funke — Home Fi (Feeding Tube)

Keep your lo fi, hi fi, and wifi; Home Fi is where it’s at. Really, how come no one characterized their music thusly before? Maxine Funke’s songs flesh out the conceit with lyrical details that relate not just home life, but a state of at-homeness on the grounds around the house. “February” doles out images of late summer foliage (Funke lives in New Zealand) and foraged taste treats; “Waving the Tea Rose” finds spiritual riches in the neighbors’ trash. Funke’s accompanies her slightly sleepy croon with spare finger-picking, captured up close enough that you can hear a chair creak while a strategically dissonant organ or fiddle pipes up in the background. This record, which was originally sold as a tape on an Australian tour, lasts just 22 minutes, but it feels as complete as an afternoon nap.

  Houssam Gania — Mosawi Swiri (Hive Mind Records)

Houssam Gania, son of guimbri master Maalem Mahmoud Gania, opens Mosawi Swiri, his debut, with an act of cheerful patricidal aggression. Rather than launching into the traditional Gnawa music — solid and sparse as a mudbrick house, deep and dark as a well and groovy as ripples in a dune — that his father mastered, Gania’s traditional guimbri and qraqabs are joined on the first track, “Moulay Lhacham,” by a guitar/drums/keys band that sounds not unlike Brent Mydland-era Dead. It’s sunshiny, a little corny and perfectly delightful. Ok, ok, so Gania Sr. was no purist himself, having collaborated with, among others, Pharoah Sanders and Peter Brotzmann, but Gania Jr’s opening gambit is pure pop delight. Luckily for armchair ethnographers everywhere, the rest of Mosawi Swiri sticks to traditional Gnawa music, which in Gania’s capable hands, really is as hypnotic and potentially curative as both locals and marshmallow-eared world music fans claim. That first track is a hoot though, and while I’m not sure Gania could sustain a whole album of gnawa-pop fusion, I’d love to see him try.

 A.F. Jones — Bourdon du Kinzie (Unfathomless)

Bourdon du Kinzie by A.F. Jones

Sound ecologist, submarine acoustician, mastering engineer, musician; if it manifests within the ears, A.F. Jones is tuned into it. This CD echoes an order that David Thomas, a man who has never been shy about telling other people what to do, once barked. “Insist on more than the truth.” This album began with a field recording expedition to a disused bunker in Port Washington, WA. The space is simultaneously absorbent and reverberant, luring external sounds into its cavernous interior and transforming them with its long decay times. You could probably get some cool sounds by simply stamping your foot or dropping the change in your pockets and hearing what the space does to it. But sound collection is just the first step for Jones. He’s used audio analysis software to isolate and enhance the space’s dominant tones, and then further seasoned the reduction with dancing sine tones. The result is a sort of sonic centrifuge in which essences are extracted so that some sounds become more ephemeral and others more vivid. Give it a spin.

 Patio—Essentials (Fire Talk)

All clanks and spikes and spatter, this Brooklyn-based trio constructs a jag-edged punk with lots of space. It jangles like a bag of rusty nails. The vocals—sung sometimes by bassist Loren DiBlasi and other times by Lindsey-Paige McCloy, the guitarist (but not by Alice Suh, the drummer) —are a soothing counterpoint, unless you listen to the words, which are sharp despite the cool, distanced delivery. The band mixes late-1980s post-punk jitter with intriguing intervals of chanted poetry and pop self-revelation. “Open,” the longest cut, threads an antic, literate narrative atop a bassline so crackling with electricity that you could get a shock. “Boy Scout,” the single, bounds ahead then collapses in a heap, surges and stops in sudden uncertainty. The music exactly mirrors the confusing, conflicting emotions sketched in lyrics like, “Never have the chance to choose, naturally I always lose, I went shopping the other day, this week I can afford to feel better.” Patio makes inward-facing music that jerks and spasms in an approximation of hedonism, but maintains its quiet, difficult core.

  PUP — Morbid Stuff (Little Dipper/Rise/BMG)

It’s been a minute since shout-along punk rattled cages like this second outing from Toronto’s PUP. Here in 11 teeth-rattling blasts, the band radiates bratty intelligence and dashed hopes, amid slamming guitars and kit battering drums. The tension between nerdy, needy erudition and beer bro riffs is palpable. When singer Stefan Babcock confesses, “Just like the kids/I've been navigating my way through the mind-numbing reality of a godless existence/Which, at this point in my hollow and vapid life, has erased what little ambition I've got left,” at the beginning of the single “Kids” you kind of expect the guy to get beat up by his own song. Obvious references include the Hold Steady, Green Day, Japandroids, that is, pretty much any punk that smart kids can memorize and dumb kids can punch the air to without really understanding. The trick is to stomp with triumphant, hobnail-studded aggression all over the relentlessly depressing lyrical content. Pretty soon, we are all singing along that, “Just because you’re sad, doesn’t make you special.”

 Joshua Redman Quartet — Come What May (Nonesuch)

Saxophonist Joshua Redman has been one of the defining voices of mainstream jazz for a quarter century, his clear tone and lyrical sensibilities a steady source of pleasure in various configurations. For Come What May, Redman reassembles his quartet from the early 2000s (pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson) for seven original compositions. The group stays locked in across a variety of sounds, with Goldberg particularly getting some time to shine. Bookending the album with meditative numbers “Circle of Life” and “Vast” makes for a nice closed structure to the disc, letting the livelier numbers pulse and swing. On “DGAF” the musicians' comfort with each other allows Hutchinson to guide a jerky momentum, one that works best when he reclaims it near the end of the song.

The ensemble doesn't push any obvious boundaries here, despite a few demanding interactions. Redman and his group are locked into standard sounds, with the challenge simply being how well they can do it. Not surprisingly, they're quite good at it, and the fact that Redman's conversations sound so easy shouldn't distract from the high level of play here. The quartet sticks to its tradition with clear sound, strong melodies and smart interplay, playing to its strengths for another expressive release.

Vandoliers, out of Dallas, make punk rock with country fiddles, hoarse-voiced stomp-alongs with Mexicali flourishes of trumpet. “Sixteen Years,” which commemorates how long these urban cowboys have been on the job, sports bruise-y r ‘n r defiance, with its chugging beat, its cigarette-and-whiskey-vocals, but leavens the mix with brash folkloric bursts of brass. A rougher “Troublemaker” amps up the one-two shuffle and slides the cow-punk meter over towards the punk side, while contemplative “Cigarettes in the Rain,” smoulders and smokes much like its subject matter, but with a noticeable twang. Forever reminds you that the Rolling Stones were, on occasion, a country band, and the Replacements once made songs like “Waitress in the Sky.” The line is permeable, the fence has a nice place to sit on, and the Vandoliers are neither punk nor country but both.

With The Time to Come, college student Eli Winter makes his entry into the solo guitar scene. Winter cites Jack Rose as a prominent influence, but he doesn't have the thickness or the pulse of Rose's sound. His sensibility, especially when playing acoustic, lies closer to Glenn Jones in his creation of atmosphere, brightness and storytelling. “Sunrise Over the Flood” starts with a simple, pretty pattern before turning dark, an evocative moment of lightness used to reveal something heavy. On the poppier side, “Oranges and Holly” builds around a riff close to the intro from “Here Comes the Sun,” but it never quite distinguishes itself. The title track unfurls over 15 minutes, Winter's structured thought allowing for linear but engaging progression. Winter's debut makes the case that we should be paying attention to him; he certainly has things to say and has the right vehicle for his expression. At the same time, it feels like a debut. Winter's restraint keeps everything in its right place, but it would be nice to see him challenge himself technically. Taking a few more risks would help him find his own niche the field, a spot he's likely to earn with a little more seasoning, given his smart songcraft and thoughtful aesthetics.

THE SHUDDERING CHERUB - for solo piano with vibrating elements by Michael Zerang

If you’re wondering how Chicago’s improvised music company made the march from the AACM’s rejection of commercial and racial marginalization in the 1960s to the current polymorphous scene, train your antennae on Michael Zerang. He’s one of the people who did the hard work of not just playing but organizing during the long dry 1980s. His polyvalence extends to his musicality; he’s played unamplified and electro-acoustic improvisation, ecstatic drone, indie rock, free jazz and pan-global percussion. It might seem a bit perverse that his first solo recording is on piano, but listen and your befuddlement will pass. Zerang spends precious little time on the keys. Instead he plunges into the instrument’s interior, liberally preparing its strings and then plucking, scraping and vibrating with sure hands and some trusty vibrators. The music morphs like a chameleon’s coloration, shifting from coarse texture to crystalline drizzle.

On Saturday morning of August 15th, 2009 the police of Buena Park, California were called to a grim crime scene. A beaten and mutilated body of a woman had been found crammed into a suitcase. The suitcase had been partially zipped shut, and then thrown into a dumpster. The woman’s teeth had been individually pulled from her mouth. Her fingers had been removed as well. The cause of death was determined to be from strangulation, and the murder had occurred only a few hours before the body was found. The mutilation was post mortem, done in an attempt to conceal the victim’s identity.

Three days later on August 18th investigators were able to give a name to the woman in the suitcase. They found the identification by tracking down the serial number on the victim’s breast implants. Her name was Jasmine Fiore.

Jasmine Fiore was radiant, fun loving, and always full of smiles. In her youth, Fiore was considered to be a tom-boy, and could often be found playing football with the boys. Those who knew Jasmine said she was a hard worker. She would wake up each morning with an agenda. She had built a career as a bikini model, and frequently worked as entertainment for parties and casinos in Vegas. Fiore had also acted in a few commercials for swim suits and adult phone lines. After turning twenty-eight, she was preparing to leave her modeling days behind, and settle down with a more suburban lifestyle. The distrubing news of Jasmine's murder shocked her family and friends. She was so happy; how could her life be over?

"Every picture that you see with her, with the big smile, that was her, " Ken Henderson, chief executive of the talent agency Fiore used, said. "And you could just feel it, it was real, it wasn't a phony smile, it wasn't the picture-taking smile, it was who she was."

Fiore’s white Mercedes was discovered in a parking lot in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, just a mile away from the penthouse she shared with her husband, Ryan Jenkins. Inside the couple’s home, investigators found a large amount of blood, some of Fiore’s hair that they believed had been pulled out during the struggle.

Ryan Jenkins was a real estate investor. Like Fiore, he also had stars in his eyes. He managed to land a role on a VH1 reality show called “Megan Wants a Millionaire”, where Jenkins competed along side of sixteen other, wealthy men to win the love of former “Rock of Love” contestant, Megan Hauserman. The show completed filming in March, 2009. Two days after wrap up, Jenkins traveled to Las Vegas, where he met Jasmine Fiore. Their love was instant, and on March 18th, only two days after meeting, the couple married in The Little White Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas strip.

The honeymoon period did not last long. Jenkins, who already had a history of domestic violence, began to physically and emotionally abuse his new wife. At first, Fiore tried to keep her personal hell a secret until one incident that pushed her to walk away. During an argument, Jenkins hit Fiore, and then pushed her into a pool, fully clothed. After this event, Fiore filed a domestic violence complaint against him. The couple decided to separate. Jasmine returned to Las Vegas, where she could surround herself with people who loved her, and Jenkins traveled to Mexico. When he returned in July, the couple reconciled and tried to give their relationship another shot. On August 13th the couple went to L'Auberge Del Mar Hotel in San Diego for a poker event. This would be the last time they were seen together.

At 8:55 PM on August 15th, 2009 Richard Jenkins reported Fiore as missing. He told the police he had not seen his wife since the evening August 14th. He claimed that the couple had just returned from the poker event when Jasmine decided to run a quick errand. She never returned.

Despite his apparent concern for his wife, Richard Jenkins was nowhere to be found. Jenkins had fled Los Angeles, and went to Nevada, where he picked up his speed boat. At this time, there were no charges against Jenkins. While in Utah, he contacted the police on August 17th, saying that he was heading back to his home country of Canada to fix some immigration problems. No one would hear from Jenkins for two more days when he called his father, who then informed Jenkins that his wife had been murdered.

On August 20th, 2009 Richard Jenkins was charged with the gruesome murder of Jasmine Fiore. A nationwide man hunt for the one time reality star began, and the U.S. Marshall's Service offered a $25,000 reward for his capture. Once it was publically announced that Jenkins was wanted for murder, VH1 decided to pull “Megan Wants a Millionaire” and remove all information related to the show out of respect for Jasmine and the Fiore family. At 6:00 PM that day Jenkins arrived the Thunderbird Motel in Hope, British Columbia, Canada. He was not alone; he had his half sister with him. The motel manager knew something was off when the guests decided to park near a dumpster rather than the rooms. Jenkins remained in the car while the half sister went inside to register a room. The booked for three nights, paying entirely with cash. The manager said he saw little activity from them during the weekend, and did not recognize Richard Jenkins from the television reports.

At about 11:30 AM on August 23rd the motel manager and his nephew decided to check on room after the couple failed to check out that morning. Inside they found Richard Jenkins, dead. Seven days after Jasmine Fiore's murder, he hung himself on a clothing rack by using his belt. Police were unable to find a suicide note at the scene, however, they did recover a one page note titled “Last Will and Testament” on Jenkins’ computer. It had been written on August 20th, 2009.
