╰┈➤ ❝ [ [ CARRY ]: sender, having been carried by the receiver for other reasons, winds up sitting in their lap once they sit down ] ❞
"i told you that you didn't need to come down to the very first row." this tournament was not kaito's forte, certainly not, but he made it into the semi finals. only two more wins and he'd carry the success back home. him, not his brother and certainly not his dad, who had been sitting next to nunnally until she decided to run to the first row. he guessed it was to catch better sight of the tournament, but kaito did not expect her to fall from the small wall, keeping the viewers away from the field.
he only meant to give her a flower; since she was his fiancee, giving it to anyone else was out of the question, even though his brother still seemed to fight for the princess' favor. marrying straight into crown royalty was certainly his goal. kaito had been given away mostly for financial reasons even if his father told him nunnally was the finest match made in heaven.
"i could have also have you maid hand it to you, but no, instead you fall down from the wall and right into my arms." she seemed to be celebrating his win, hence kaito could not find it in him to really complain. she was being way too cute to actually be mad at her, even though he demeanor hardly gave away that he was indeed not bothered by such actions.
sitting down on the bench next to the field, he let nunnally sink onto his lap. "it's my brother's turn. you should cheer for him. he's awfully fond of you." having been childhood friends and all, kaito understood those affections very well, but this was going to be his wife while his brother could still see her as a very dear friend.
"i doubt he'll win against the princess' brother though." wrapping one arm around nunnally, to hold her close, kaito leaned forward to check his spear. he wasn't a bad fighter, nor warrior, he was good at horse riding, but never in his life did he win against his brother. stepping out of his brother's shadow was just impossible.

"but instead of grabbing it you fell down. you're getting in way too much trouble. the royal family is staring at you from time to time and let me tell you, they're not exactly... beaming with positivity." though he supposed it was plenty funny, maybe even halfway amusing to watch nunnally struggle through their trip to the capital. kaito saw no sense in becoming buddy buddy with the princess anyways, after all they were more or less distant cousins and hideaki was also just here to marry into her family and usurp the throne at one point. hard to say if he was successful. the princess was extraordinarily hard to please. such a witch.
good thing kaito was very far from ever wearing that heavy crown. being considered a prince was one thing, but to actually act as one was almost scary. taking care of his own subordinates as well as the people living at their estate was plenty confusing, not to mention dad was slowly showing him the finances expecting for kaito to slowly take over, since hideaki planned to move to the capital at one point. then it was kaito's job to manage everything around their home.
"but what if i let you fall, silly?" not that kaito wasn't confident, but he would also not want for nunnally to get hurt. in fact the thought might even scare him. she was too precious for even a bruise. he was not very good at showing his emotions, but kaito liked nunnally a whole lot. just actually admitting to that seemed slightly uncomfortable. he'd have to give up his act of being... cool. at least he hoped he was. that was after all reserved for hideaki and not the clumsy small pink who always had a scowl on his face.
upon hearing her comments about the princess, kaito lifted an eyebrow. it was one thing for hideaki to lose to a stranger from the south, which also meant losing the opportunity to ask the princess for only a bit of her precious time but for kaito to step up and win against the pretty tanned stranger that had managed to fell his brother... wow, exciting. almost terrifying.
"i guess... i will do my best, my beautiful wife who happens to have a way too well working mouth." he pinched her nose lightly before sighing. she wasn't wrong, the princess was a beast and winning would be absolutely amazing, but the stranger was about as intimidating as a bear. he was also as big as one. even his eyes screamed danger.
"it's only petty revenge, nunnally. dad's brother was an awful man. he framed his own brother to have an illegitimate wife. the lady for some reason attested to everything and we were moved away from the capital. you see, the princess is his daughter, we're only trying to spite him and... win back our original place." at least he liked to believe hideaki wasn't seriously interested in the woman that was obviously boring his little wife. "so... they didn't talk about men at all?" kaito lifted an eyebrow, pulling her a little closer.
"i sincerely hope he's not going to impale me on that huge spear but... if it happens, come rescue me." he chuckled softly, tapping her forehead with one finger.
“But I wanted to…” – she felt embarrassed with her actions, but at the same time happy that Kaito managed to catch her and carry her away to safety – “I preferred to take this flower by myself… You’re my fiancé after all…” – she reminded him, though a moment later she remembered he was pretty uncomfortable about them getting married. As for herself, Nunnally didn’t complain. She was actually glad about this union. Even if Kaito didn’t love her, he seemed to still l i k e her. And he was her friend. So for her it was much better than being handed over to a complete stranger. Getting a husband that was your friend was more than most women could hope for.
And her father was still happy about the match. Her fiancé’s was the prince of royal blood. Indeed, he would have preferred Kaito’s older brother, but Nunnally preferred things this way. She was convinced would make a terrible queen. And she would be a constant burden for Hideaki. And that would make her sad. She cared about the crown prince as much as she cared for Kaito. She often regretted they were not kids any more.
“It ended up quite romantic…” – she added; making herself more comfortable on his lap; at least she hoped everyone would see it like that. Perhaps that would allow her to avoid the punishment her father would be prompt to deliver for being so unladylike.
“Of course he will.” – Nunnally decided to disagree with Kaito, and waving eagerly to her childhood friend – “And then the two of you would meet in the final duel.” – although just after saying that she had remembered Kaito had never won against her brother.
“But if he loses…” – she added cheerfully – “Then it’ll be your responsibility to win the tournament for me. After all we cannot have that boring pretty princess decorating the winner…” – she started and then covered her face in sudden embarrassment. The crown prince was still trying to win the princess’s heart and hand. Or perhaps it was only a hand?
“I…I know I shouldn’t be saying that…” – she tried; Nunnally really tried to look contrite, but she couldn’t – “But it was me who was forced to spend the whole day with her and her ladies-in-waiting. Can you believe all day long they talked and talked...and talked about clothes, jewelry and balls?” – her voice was desperate as if she was trying to ask Kaito to rescue her from her fate of spending the time with the princess.
“What does even your brother see in her?” – no, Nunnally wasn’t jealous, but she couldn’t believe Hideaki could be happy with her.
“I am glad we have ourselves…” – she added caressing his cheek gently. And then she kissed kiss cheek. – That’s for good luck. I feel you’re going to win this tournament.”
