He had truly been the first person she had ever loved. Arden had given her everything to him to hope for it in return. When things had been great with them, she felt on top of the world. As she waited for him to better herself, she felt herself crumbling to pieces at his feet while she begged for him. Arden couldn't watch him fall apart now.

"Because I love you. Leaving you in that time of need was the hardest thing I've ever done." Tears now threatened to spill over as reached for his hand. Arden could sense that anxiety filling her car at the mention of rehab. She gave his hand a squeeze. "I will be there every step of the way. I'll stay with you if you want. You'll get better. Promise me you'll take this seriously and start taking care of yourself. There's no real option."

Ben didn't deserve for her to love him like this, to still be here for him after their break up. She had done what was best, she had called things off because it wasn't a fair relationship. She shouldn't have had to baby him. He was falling apart, and it wasn't fair for her to pick up the pieces when things inevitably went wrong. Although she was there anyway.

"I don't blame you for walking away." He said and kept his focus on the road in front of him as she drove. "I don't know how you didn't leave sooner." He confessed, running a hand down his face. Rehab, the word he had been dreading hearing. Something that he knew was coming but was in denial for such a long time. "I think rehab is the only option right now to be honest. I know if I keep going this way I'm going to end up dead."

Arden had never known how true happiness felt until she met Nate. Every second of that warm and fuzzy feeling was terrifying to her, and she regretted never vocalising how she felt to him. It only made things worse. As he held her in his strong arms, she was reminded how it felt to be safe and loved. Her hand ran down his chest and over his stomach to remind herself how his skin felt underneath her fingertips. Arden would often just hover in the doorway of their bathroom while he got ready just to admire everything about. How she missed it. He was scooping her up again and removing her shirt in a quick motion. Her lips crashed against his. Noses bumped together, but she didn't care. She craved him. "I need you, Nate," she whispered with her forehead pressed to his. Arden reached behind her to unclasp her bra and letting it fell to the side. "Please."

Through all of this. Their entire relationship from the goods to the bads, from them being together to them breaking up. When they were together he was happy, minus the fights, they were always exhausting but at the end of the day his love for her was enough he felt like until he couldn't anymore. Being here, kissing her lips, holding her body in his arms was so effortlessly. It helped being that he worked out and was a carpenter holding heavier items. Hovering above her body, she looked so beautiful underneath of him. He adjusted his position to aid taking the shirt off over his head. He didn't have time to respond as his lips kissed hers back. His arm scooped around her waist to pull it up into his body. His lips kissed her back as he didn't have time to respond, not that he was complaining. His arms scooped around her waist to pull her close to him as his one arm moved up to push her shirt up and over her head, breaking their kiss for a moment as he took her all in. ❝ You're so beautiful. ❞ He stated as he kissed her lips once again.

The last box was brought into her--their--home. The loneliness that had plagued her for several months without Nate was finally lifting. Still, she was filled with anxiety at the idea of being together like this again. What if this was a failure all over again? She sat on the edge of the bed in the master bedroom and twisted her engagement finger over and over again anxiously. "This doesn't feel real to have you back here."

"You'll figure something out. I promise." The holidays were creeping up closer on her and Ben. Arden's shopping was easy. Ben and her mother the only important people in her life. Her arm hooked with his in the aisles as she walked. "Now, did the girls give you a list of things or are we going in blind?"

She'd always found it hard to make friends and to keep them, but Graham always made it easy. She liked to think she helped beat the attitude out of him over the years, but the arrogance would always hang around no matter how hard she tried. Her head leaned against his shoulder. Physical affection was never something she liked, but Graham always had a free pass. It was easier with him, and she knew he expected nothing from her. "You have too even if I did hate you when we first met. I used to think I wasn't going to finish intern year without getting into a fist fight with you."

It had been a miracle that Graham had made a friend out of Arden. When they had first met, he had been arrogant. Cocky. Rude. Not much has changed since then, now that he thinks about it. "You're right. I learned the most from some of the worst attendings out there." Chuckling, he wraps an arm around her shoulder, pulling her close to his side. He only showed this type of affection towards her. Everyone else? He remained cold and stoic. "You know, you've made this hospital bearable."

Every single day seemed to get harder. Ben’s treatments had started a few weeks ago, and it was difficult to watch him get more and more sick with each passing day. Arden had taken a sabbatical from work so that she could be by his side, and she hardly left him. At night, she’d lay awake and watch his chest rise out of fear he might suddenly slip away from her. It was painful to see the strong man she knew going through something so hard.

After helping him sit up in the bed, Arden slipped away to make him a cup of soup. It was pouring outside, and soup felt right. “Babe?” she said from the door. The soup bowl was set beside him and she kissed his temple. “How are you feeling today? How’s your pain?”

The exhaustion of being a new mom and hit her like a truck. A brand new baby had been quite the change for them, and she had poorly underestimated the lack of sleep everyone had warned her about. Arden stood in the living room with a crying newborn. She bounced her up and down while she walked in circles in hopes she might calm down. “Ben!” she called out. “What do I do?” There were a few times she’d felt helpless. Being a mom was never in her original plans until she met Ben. “Can you bring a bottle from the fridge, please? I think she’s hungry again. Unless you have any of your magical tricks up your sleeve.”

“I did my proper Aunt duties and grabbed the cutest outfit to spoil your little one. And there’s something in there for you too.” Arden laughed, setting a Wal-Mart bag on the counter before joining her best friend on the couch. Arden could hardly believe that Graham was a dad now. Graham had been her best friend since she moved here, and she was so excited to see how far he’d come since she’d known him. “How are you holding up as a brand new father?”

There would always be a part of her that wished she tried harder to keep him. What if they hadn't given up? What if she hadn't kicked him out in a fit of rage one night after a fight? They'd still be a happy couple with her cold feet pressed against his legs as he protested. She even missed his snoring sometimes. She missed his warmth and comfort he brought her.

She downed the rest of her champagne at the memories. His stupid smile that she fell in love with first was now staring back at her. God, this wasn't enough champagne. Arden topped off her cup. "I hope you know that I'll still be cuddling up next to you." Arden kicked off her shoes and picked her knees up to her chest. "I'm sorry, Nathaniel. For when I threw your stuff out in the lawn, and all of it. I never wanted to cause you any pain. I've never been good at all these emotions."

ARDEN THOMPSON:

Arden originally planned to cancel the whole trip. The idea of spending what was once supposed to be the perfect romantic trip hurt. She was anxious to spend nearly an entire week cooped up with her ex-boyfriend, but they’d done it before. Arden found herself stuck on those perfect memories they had once created. That’s why she stayed with him for so long. When things were good, they were great. She had loved him more than anything, and now she was worried she’d never stopped.

Topping off both their paper cups, she turned her attention back to the bed. “You know I can’t sleep in socks! It feels weird. Besides, who needs them when I had you right there.” She remembered the times in the night when his strong arms held her impossibly close. The way she relaxed against him in the night. The safety he had brought her. “I started to get you those nose strips to stop snoring, but I wasn’t so sure that would go over well.” Arden took a seat on the edge of the bed. A smile appeared on her lips at the thought of their memories. “I do miss your body heat and tormenting you during the night.”

     When things with Arden were good, nothing else mattered, even her imperfections made her perfect but it had it’s downsides with stupid little arguments that they could have. He got frustrated when things were down with them, leading to their break up because she still held his heart. He wanted to refuse coming here because being in the same room as her he was worried that he would fall for her all over again, fall for her and reopen the feeling he was trying to move past.

     Chuckling he nodded his head. ❝ Oh I know, you refused them every time which is why you were lucky I was so warm always. ❞ He found himself smiling about it, the little things at night like that. He cold toes against his warm legs, her body fitting into his, he had to blink a couple of times as he took a sip from the cup to regain his composure. ❝ It’s cute how you thought you could help. ❞ He stated as he cleared his throat. ❝ Well… you’re in luck with this trip if we share that bed, you’ll get all my body heat. ❞

Arden was nearing the second week of having this awful stomach bug that she seemingly couldn’t shake. She was constantly worn out, and she didn’t think twice about it. It was this time of year that some ‘bug’ went around the hospital. It wasn’t until today that Arden realized she was late. Arden found herself hiding in an exam room sticking herself with a needle to get a blood test to confirm that what she felt in her gut was true. 

She wanted to wait for Dimitri, but her curiosity got the best of her. She ripped open the envelope in her car to see a positive reading for Hcg levels indicating that it wasn’t just a stomach bug. She was pregnant. Tears of joy slid down her cheeks. Her and Dimitri had spoken about starting a family, but she didn’t think they meant it would start this soon. Nothing for them had even been planned, though, but everything always had the right timing somehow.

The surgeon stood in their kitchen with a gift bag on the counter as she waited for her fiance to come home. In the bag was a shirt she had bought on the way home. It was white with “Best Dad Ever” written across the front. Hearing the door open, Arden jumped to her feet to greet him at the door. Arms wrapped around him before lips met his. “Someone dropped off a gift for you earlier. It’s in the kitchen.” Arden tried to hide her excitement to avoid giving anything away, but she was sure her excitement was written all over her face

“You know, most people would argue that drinking directly from the bottle is unhealthy,” Arden said as she brought the bottle of red wine to her lips. “But there’s actually some studies that show the wine can be good for your heart.” Of course, that was in moderation, but that wasn’t the point right now. “Tell me what is happening in the great and amazing world of Doctor Graham?”

Arden shared a similar dislike for Christmas. She couldn’t remember one positive memory from her childhood. Her parents were always working, and they were never there at Christmas. She typically sat at the Christmas tree with her nanny and watched Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer on repeat until she fell asleep. Since she started dating Dimitri, though, she learned that Christmas didn’t have to be only negative memories. “Maybe this year we should stop being such Grinches. What do we say?” Arden stood outside with her back turned towards the male attendings dressing room, talking to her best friend through the doorway. “It’s also our last child-less Christmas so maybe we should make the most of this one.”

"Andres?" Arden said in complete surprise. "No way!" She was quick to pull him into a hug. The years since she'd last seen him had served him well. "I thought I'd revisit the old stomping grounds."
