The other thing about grief is that it’s a lonely road because Regulus wouldn’t talk about it. Not at school, not with his friends, definitely not with his brother. The days continue to pass and you don’t understand where everyone gets the energy to go out, to fall in love, to be with family, to hang out with friends, because something earthshattering has happened; but you go out, you hang out with family and friends even though something earthshattering has happened. Even so, a shattered earth continues to spin, and Regulus continues going to work, cleaning his apartment, going out with his friends on Tuesdays and Fridays, having breakfast with Sirius on Saturdays and dinner with Lucius and Draco on Sundays.

most people describe daphne as someone who has a hard time letting people in, but never ends up regretting when she does. she’s a sarcastic, loyal and understanding friend. always seems to have the best advice, but never applies it to themselves. they’re not a romantic or affectionate person, but somehow always manages to show love to other people her own way. she’s struggles a lot with school and has never had good grades, she used to try but stopped caring. people never use to notice her until there is a small place/friendgroup when she feels comfortable and confident enough to talk, and they’re surprisingly funny and a cool person to talk with, as she is the most open minded person of her group. rarely judges people if she doesn’t know them. isolates themselves from everyone when something is wrong, even if she knows she can trust this person or is comfortable with them (even theo). doesn’t get angry, but gets disappointed. usually forgets that she has to speak in a conversation, as if she expected everyone to read her mind or smth like that. pretty awkward with everyone if she doesn’t know them well.

⋆ childhood:

when they were born, their parents had been trying to have kids for years, so her first years were beautiful. she was their parents' little miracle. but as tori, her sister, was born, and the years passed, she realized how unhealthy their parents' marriage was.

even if at first it didn't seem like it, her parents were distant. she wouldn't say they were bad parents, but that they were too worried caring about themselves to take care of their kids.

daphne was always a quiet person, since she was a kid. even their parents struggled to communicate with her, before they stopped trying. she wouldn't talk to anyone and rarely left their living room, where she spent hours and hours reading, drawing, staring through the window.

her family tended to forget about their existence, while they admired how smart, funny and incredible astoria was. she did have a good relationship with her aunt, who was 16 years younger than their mom. it was weird to everyone because of their personalities, (1/2)

astoria and her should have got along better, but her aunt always seem to prefer spending time with her, surrounded by comfortable silences. (2/2)

she grew up in a pureblood family, and even though politics and the blood-status were present in their family, her parents (especially) were chill, tho they were in voldemort´s side in both wars.

as they grew up, astoria had always try to catch her big sister´s attention, tho it was later, at hogwarts, when they really started to get along.

⋆ hogwarts:

daphne got sorted in slytherin, something they were expecting, as her whole family had been sorted in that house.

she was told she´ll have to share room with two girl she noticed were talking and laughing during the sorting, pansy parkinson and millicent bulstrode; and tracey davis, a girl she met in the train and was glad didn't tried to start a conversation.

the first weeks were hell for them. pansy and millicent had quickly become friends and were, from daphne´s perspective, too loud and annoying, as the girls were always talking, gossiping, and unfortunately, trying to start conversations with her.

tracey, who daph actually tolerated, was as quiet as her, but apparently didn't mind the others' loud conversations at midnight, and joined when she felt like it.

she wasn't really jealous of the friendship her roommates had established, they just wished it would have been as easy to her.

as the years passed, she started to get more along with tracey, spending time together either reading or working on their own things.

and then, around third year, milli and pansy had finally stopped trying to force daphne into talking with them, and that's when daphne started to feel comfortable enough to slowly join their conversations, and that’s when the friendship began.

it wasn´t until the end of their fourth year that they started to hang out with draco malfoy and their gang, who got along with pansy and millicent, even though daphne and theo were already friends by that time.

daphne and theo started to get along during second year, because dumbledore told theo to give extra classes to daph as she was failing most of them, and he was one of the best students, after draco and hermione.

at first it was a bit weird, as theo shyly tried to start conversation while daphne just blandly started at him. deep down, daphne was just jealous that this kid, who has friends with draco malfoy and his gang, who she used to dislike by that time, was far more smart that she was ever going to be, and a bit intimidated and surprised by him, as theo, just really wanted to get along with them, because he had noticed her before as astoria’s (an annoying first year he knew) big sister, and knew because she was pansy’s roommate.

as they spent more and more afternoons in the library, they both started to get to know each other, and by the end of the year, theo could freely and without any doubt, call them his bestfriend.

theo nott is that person who’s always has been right by daphne’s side, stuck with her in their own bubble, where no one else was important. joined at the hip since they met.

millicent was the last one of the girls to start getting along with daphne, and at first, neither of them really liked years, as daphne had always ignore and dislike her, and milli had spend too much time trying to be friends with her and got tired. so neither really interacted if they weren’t with the others, and when they did, it was insulting eachother, in a jokingly-but-not-so-funny way, so neither of them really knew if the other disliked or liked the other.

that kept happening until the summer of their fifth year, where daphne invited the group to stay at her house bc their parents weren’t there. it was there when the two started to get closer, spend full nights talking, getting to really know eachother, as daph always thought of millicent as that person who wasn’t satisfied until she got everyone’s attention, and milli as daph thought herself as far more smart than others to socialize. during the few days more millicent spent at her house, as his parents where also gone, they both realize the idea they had about the other was completely wrong.

it was pansy who, after being really happy that both her friends finally really started to get along, that also started to realized maybe that new friendship the two had formed wasn’t platonic, and when she told tracey, she agreed, but milli or daphne were fully oblivious of their feelings until after their christmas holidays during six year. they started dating quickly after that.

they don’t have the “we used to get along as kid but then we grew apart” dynamic. no. they’re the exact opposite. daphne couldn’t stand tori when they were kids, and it took them a long time to start liking her sister, while astoria was basically obsessed with her big sister, copied everything she did, and followed her everywhere, just like a young sibling would do. she was desperated to catch her sis attention and tried so so hard to.

during daph’s first year at hogwarts, tori wrote millions and millions of letters which she barely responded, and as she felt more and more alone, without any friends, she started to realized how much she missed her annoying little sister.

they started to get closer when tori arrived to hogwarts, but then stop talking again, as tori became popular with her shinny, extrovert and funny personality, while daph was under her shadow, once again. tori had a rough time watching theo and daphne get closer, as that boy didn’t even had to try to be his friend, and she had been trying to since the day she was born.

as the years passed, daphne started to realize that she had been more angry at her sister than she should have been. because it wasn’t tori’s fault. that was just her personality, her way of being. and it was the complete opposite to daphne’s.

but that was fine. because that’s how it would always be. and it was fine.

by the end of tori’s third year, the sisters got along better than ever, and when astoria came out as trans, the first person she told was her sister.

⋆ after the war and post-hogwarts:

vincent’s death deeply affected the group, and they took their time to meet again, the first time where they were “all” together after the war. all of them tried to continue their lives as well as they could, as most death eaters end up in azkaban, which means most of their parents ended there.

neither of them, except astoria, continued their studies at hogwarts.

it was almost two years after the war that draco and astoria announced they were dating.

it was shooking, for most of them. it felt like a betrayal to her, as astoria, daphne’s sister, the person she loved the most, knew how madly in love theo, daph’s soulmate and bestfriend, was with draco. by that time, she felt like she had to pick a side, like they had to choose who to stand and who to comfort.

it was during that time that millicent moved away with her father, and him and daphne broke up. and that astoria’s health started to get worse.

they all went to the wedding, but daphne, as she looked to all the faces she knew, found it hard to remember every single one of them had once trust the other more than anything. that they had been a team. friends. the best of them.

the war had fucked them up, or maybe, they were all fucked up since the beginning.

all of them kept contact with each other, after all.

they finally all reunited when scorpius was born.

it was draco who told her of astoria.

it was him who appeared in her house, a hot summer night, with silent tears in his cheeks.

the funeral was the last time blaise, pansy, draco, gregory and millicent saw her.

she moved away, as far away as she could from all of them. and slowly stopped answering theo’s letters.

the last news theo got from her were a polaroid photo she had taken of him, with vincents camera during one of the summers in her house. him sitting next to draco, while the others talked laying on the group, smiling, neither of them realizing she was taking that photo.

personality .

daphne greengrass has never been particularly nice. she knows how to play it , knows how to make people like her , but in her heart , she doesn't mean it. daphne's primary motivator is selfishness , not the greedy kind ⎯ just the kind that leads her to believe that to prevail , she must always put herself first. horribly ambitious , daphne manages to have brains , beauty , and social graces , though most come through hard work. she's not easy to love , but easy to admire , until she gets in your way , of course. while some get her in the way souls sometimes recognize each other , to most , her faked image is all there is. vapid , shallow , stupid , unambitious ⎯ but strangely fun to be around. daphne's managed to become more of a concept than a person , never letting people come too close. she spends nights partying , days training , and the occasional hour sleeping. some might wonder why a formerly bright student with heaps of ambition burned out like that , but most don't care. she's rich , pretty , and has many a person's dream job , her life seems to be perfect in a world where that seems hard to find ⎯ it makes nobody want to look under the mask.

backstory .

being the first born out of two daughters , and no more children ⎯ specifically , no sons , was not an easy life to wade through , contrary to the way daphne speaks of her childhood. because astoria was a girl too , because daphne was the eldest , because the way her father looked so disappointed ⎯ it made daphne desperate to give back , in a way. likely the earliest sign of slytherin ambition in an otherwise unambitious looking girl , daphne walked two months before the other children at the pureblood day nursery ( sent to for socializing , despite the army of nannies at home ) , and in a way , that step ahead has never left her.

daphne greengrass has always been held under the disappointing weight that she was not a son , and from the moment she could understand , she has tried to compensate in any way possible. with a keen mind , she breezed through her early private studies , devouring book after book. with her blonde locks , she twirled through every junior event her mother took her to , leaving everyone with a smile after seeing her. with her lack of sleep , she followed her father around at night when he practiced , watching the magic he wielded , and practicing the wand movements on a twig until a trip to ollivander's would be appropriate.

a ravenclaw - slytherin hatstall , she'd begged the hat for the latter , the house of many greengrasses before them would do , nothing else ( even when the blue robes of ravenclaw would fit her better ). she quickly worked her way through her housemates , acquainting those who had similar families and virtues , charming those who had something to offer ( or who's parents were friends with her own , and needed to be impressed ) , and intriguing those who didn't hold any value for her to interact with ( at least , that's how she sees herself ⎯ a mysterious enigma. truthfully , she just ignored them and vice versa. )

daphne greengrass had a thirty year plan at age fourteen , ready to rule over a kingdom she'd build from scratch. youngest supreme mugwump to the international confederation of wizards was the ultimate goal , but she'd start with chief warlock to the wizengamot. daphne , to most people , likely seemed insane. by limiting herself to six hours of sleep at most , she'd socialize ( aka ingratiate herself to or find blackmail on ) her most promising peers whenever she could , holding onto popularity status with a tight fist , and at the same time , worked to advance herself in her studies ( and try to be better than her classmates at it , though she'd never publically admit it. ) originally , quidditch had come as a way for her to blow off steam , slamming her beater's bat so hard it would release every frustration , but she quite enjoyed the sport ⎯ and the extra popularity boost whenever slytherin won.

at age sixteen , daphne was approached to join the death eaters by a distant cousin who had heard her parents boast of her progress. while the family was publically neutral ( despite the occasional donation to the death eaters & politicians supporting them ) , and daphne herself would also prefer not to be involved with all that nasty murder business , she was smart enough to know that saying no to the death eaters when someone went out of their way to recruit you was a one way ticket to an early grave. so instead , daphne simply smiled and replied " oh cousin , you know father pays the school to boost my grades , right ? " like it was an inside joke. the next few months , daphne went out of her way to build a new image , suddenly going to one party a night instead of once a week , and embarrassing herself while drunk ⎯ as long as it was around other death eater prospects that would pass on the word. eventually , her cousin , with a bit of suspicion in his eyes , told her that her recruitment would be postponed. while it wasn't a full win , daphne knew it was one she should take.

as death eaters took over the school in her final year , daphne knew she couldn't quit now. her grades dropped in classes run by professors associated with lord voldemort , purposely answering wrong on her quizzes. she would get caught drinking ( and manage to escape punishment the best she could by dropping her family name ) and behaved as recklessly as could be allowed. seeing as she was already building image , she might as well sow a few seeds of rebellion , too , occasionally passing a well made healing potion to a student with bruises from the carrows ( while sending a poorly made version to be judged by the professor ) , and causing distractions when she saw others close to getting caught. unfortunately , all this behavior caused disappointed letters from her parents ⎯ and their ministry contacts , who had promised daphne an internship post-hogwarts. word of the latter got back to her cousin , who knew it would be an excellent placement for the death eaters to have a spy , and daphne knew she had to ruin that for herself too.

after the death eater victory , she knew her chances were safer , they didn't need as many members when the world was at their taking , but daphne has always been incredibly self-preserving , and with so many of those holding anti death eater sentiment still alive ( and resenting ) , she knew she had to safeguard her future. shocking most everyone , daphne was recruited to puddlemere united after school ⎯ and gratefully accepted the offer. her mother berated that proper pureblood girls didn't play dirty sports like that , her father bemoaned the ministry career she could've had , daphne just threw herself into training head first. as the world plunged into terror , daphne closed herself off inside a small bubble. she'd visit public events and wave to the crowds with a bright , shining smile. she'd unleash everything on the pitch , quickly working her way towards a permanent beater position. she'd stay away from politics and war , sometimes simply pretending it doesn't exist.

daphne sometimes worries that her life has become small , which is odd to most , considering she's a star player and upcoming celebrity in the wizarding world. but after years of plans and ambitions , she feels like her self-preservation has become so extreme , it fully pulled her away from all her hopes and dreams. she feels that , eventually , she'll simply sizzle out , reclusing herself without purpose. selfish fear rules her , makes her bite back at people , makes her nights too late and her mornings too harsh. something needs to break , or daphne will.

plot ideas .

i'd fall for you over & over , but falling comes to an end : an intense former romance , likely started ( and possibly also ended ) during hogwarts , but still has a lasting impression on the both. this person understood daphne completely , and vice versa. she did not tell them about the recruitment out of fear , and they watched her become this entirely different person over night , pushing them apart until they eventually broke up. this person likely knows she's faking everything , but due to their shared history , doesn't tell. meanwhile , daphne simply watches them with melancholy glances whenever they're not looking , knowing she let something good go.

drown your problems in a bottle : the hottest friend group to hit the wizarding world social scene in years , at least , that's what the news paper clippings say. this is a group of fellow partiers , who enjoy a celebrity or socialite lifestyle , along with daphne. whether they genuinely enjoy it or are also hiding from something at the bottom of a shot glass is not important. together they laugh , dance , and are photographed for witch weekly's best dressed list ( or gossip section , if it's a particularly wild night ) ⎯ while they might not necessarily be true friends , they cling to each other like one would to a lifeboat during a storm at sea , desperate to infect each other with enough positivity ( and alcohol , most importantly ) that the world outside seems unimportant.

built in youth , threatened by ruin : daphne's true friends , likely having been there for year , and likely a group that's been pulled apart by the war. they know each other deeply , intimately , but none of them will admit the growing cracks in their foundation. everyone pretends daphne's always been like this , not the whip smart girl of their youth. daphne ignores her friend's truths too , all of them trying not to say anything that will expose the rot growing in their friendship. these are the people that know daphne incredibly well , but the stress on their bond has made almost every interaction tense , waiting for the storm to break.

other ideas : former academic rivals , likely puzzled by daphne's current behavior ; one night stands and hook ups , most likely meaningless ; friendly acquaintances , possibly holding the blossom of real friendship but ignored by daphne ; those annoyed / vexed by daphne , whether that's past or current ; quidditch colleagues on the puddlemere team or rivals ; work out buddies that train together ; order-aligned folks who daphne slipped a bit of help during her seventh year ; ex - relationships that didn't last particularly long , ended amicably ... or much more dramatic.

2023 Resolutions Revisited

Time to revisit the resolutions that I made in 2023! This is definitely my favourite post of the year because I will forever love accountability. The best part about making resolutions is going back and seeing how they went in reality. Why are people so anti-resolution? My guess is because most of us think that resolutions are supposed to be serious and not at all fun. Well, news flash - I’m here to tell you that you’re allowed to make fun ones. Also I’m bringing back “news flash.”

Throughout the year, I kept making my seasonal lists (spring, summer, autumn, winter). I got really into making reels, Nathan did his second Tonight Show, I got to visit the abandoned City Hall subway station, I toured the gorgeous Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, went to a tulip farm in New Jersey, we celebrated my dad’s 100th birthday with a giant party and a family trip to Scotland, I saw a ton of shows on Broadway (Death of a Salesman, Moulin Rouge, Shucked, Pictures From Home, Bad Cinderella, Hamlet at Shakespeare in the Park, Six, The Shark is Broken). I started the Summer Saturdays series, as well as Fall Fridays. I saw the Lagerfeld costume exhibit at The Met, I got to see this incredible private rehearsal of a play with Michael McKean, I flew in a Harvard plane, I continued my domination of Halloween, Nathan had three pretty significant pieces written about him in The New York Times, I compiled my favourites of 2023, and I found my favourite summer photos as well as my favourite photos of the year. And here’s how my 2023 resolutions went.

1. Read at least one book per season.

Spring: Keep Moving by Dick Van Dyke

Oh my god, that’s it. I read one book last year. Nobody tell my dad because that’s embarrassing as hell. That’s the worst I’ve ever done with my reading goals. Definitely aiming to better about that this year.

2. Take Baby Dog on an adventure at least twice a season.

Done! She went to Canada a total of three separate times this year, and I took her on Central Park walks each season. She also did her pet volunteering a few times and I also took her to the air field where my brother and I got to fly in those planes.

3. Try at least one new restaurant each month.

January: Carne Mare (such a beautiful space, it’s perfect for a special occasion, caviar mozzarella sticks were slightly overrated but everything else was good), Little Ruby’s Cafe (so great for lunch) & Bistro Eloise (had the best onion soup in all of NYC, that broth was unreal, escargots was fantastic)

February: The Bar Room (the grilled chicken on top of their caesar salad was unparalleled), Nubeluz by Jose Andres at The Ritz-Carlton (everything was great, view is perfect), Golden Unicorn (suck city, don’t go) & Olio E Piu (so terrible, begging you to never go)

March: The now-closed Quality Eats (that short rib hash was great), Wayan (best dishes: the corn fritters, the spring rolls, the lamb kebabs and the chocolate chip cookie with cheddar ice cream) & The Grill (the MP pasta appetizer was the most incredible thing we ate - they used this crank-type machine table-side to make the broth for the pasta sauce out of MEAT BONES and I’m still thinking about it, other highlight was the gluten-free zucchini cornbread)

April: Hawksmoor (flashy and beautiful inside, but no real substance), Pete’s Tavern (space is great, food is fine and service was attentive but odd) & Figlia (best Italian in Astoria, by far)

May: Spirit Tree Estate Cidery (so wonderful, can’t wait to go again)

June: S& P (fine, absolutely nothing special) & Sojourn (the duck spring rolls are insanely good)

July: Superiority Burger (veggie burger was great, everything else was just average), Modern Bread and Bagel (the gluten free latkes and french toast sticks were unreal) & Rubirosa (great space, great food)

August: 111 by Modou in Glasgow (fantastic!)

September: Shukette (truly special), Margaritaville in Times Square (the key lime pie is legit here) & Shopsin’s (great chicken sandwich)

October: Beetle House (too fun) & Oscar Wilde (so seasonally perfect)

November: Kaia Wine Bar (insanely good birria tacos and a great happy hour)

4. Properly go on a date with Nathan at least once a month.

Did it! Some of the dates included: going to see Death of a Salesman on Broadway, which depressed us so much that we silently went home and immediately to sleep. He made me see Scream VI against my will, we got drinks at Sunken Harbor Club, went bowling in Astoria, had a night at Rec Room in Square One, saw Talk To Me in theatres, went to Shot of Art together, devoted each Sunday in October to horror movies, we saw The Shark is Broken AND LIFE WAS CHANGED FOREVER (we loved it) and then we went to Maryland for New Year’s Eve.

5. Every month, cook something I’ve never cooked before.

January: penne alla vodka (this recipe sucked, but I want to try it again) and lasagna soup (wonderful, definitely would make again)

February: greek chicken meatballs (hard pass, too bland)

March: chicken marsala (I’ve made this at least ten times since March, favourite recipe of the year) & tres leche cake (heavenly)

April: steak Diane (really, really good) & asparagus soup (phenomenal)

May: lemon almond pudding cake (pretty boring, wouldn’t make again) & a classic bread pudding (simple and great recipe)

June: strawberry cobbler bars (good, but nothing to make again) & this dark chocolate cake with this icing (unbelievably tasty)

July: nothing this month (I’ll blame it on traveling)

August: stuffed summer shells (so, so good) & homemade pizza (which I promise to shut up about after this post)

September: tomato tart (good, but a ready-made puff pastry would’ve tasted better here) & pecan pumpkin chocolate chip cookies (meh, don’t need to make again) & pumpkin spice syrup for iced coffee (wow)

October: apple cider doughnut cookies (good!) & a coconut chicken tikka masala (good but I never need to do it again)

December: espresso martini cookies (good!) & a mushroom loaf (truly great) & chocolate pistachio shortbread cookies (the worst! I think I just messed up the recipe though so this is on me)

6. Go on a solo, alone trip.

Biggest regret on this whole list. I’ve wanted to do this for years, so I might just keep it on the 2024 list.

7. Have at least one advertiser on this site.

Not yet! But I’ll keep trying.

8. On the first of each month, try something new.

Jesus, these resolutions were lofty! Big nope on this one.

9. Buy a keyboard and start playing piano again.

Hahahah, not even kinda. Great idea in theory. I did play piano each time I visited my parent’s house, though, so that’s something. A pathetic something, but a something. Don’t worry, I won’t try to take a half point here.

10. Have my book in at least one bookstore by the end of the year. Even if I have to self-publish and then physically put it on a shelf myself.

Okay, truthfully I didn’t even remember this was a resolution, so I didn’t even submit it anywhere for at least half of the year. But this is exactly why I need to revisit my resolutions list at least once a month. (It’s not lame if that itself is one of my resolutions, yeah?)

One thing that I’m so happy that I kept doing throughout the year? My monthly roundup posts. They’re basically little monthly journal entries that make me realize how good I have it sometimes, and I’m so grateful that anyone wants to read them. hii, im in search of a fic that's post-hogwarts and post-war. the things i remember include: draco begins working closely with hermione at the ministry, he notices she's very withdrawn, he speaks to astoria about it and she tells him his teasing/ bullying during the hogwarts days really affected her, their coworkers gave her a nickname "ice queen" or something along those lines because she never goes out with anyone and rejects every guy, and im pretty sure astoria and hermione were close friends. that's all i can remember, im not too sure how helpful it will be, thank you so much if you find it, if not that's totally ok!! :)
