It's Library Trade Roundup time, baby!

Descender: Deluxe Edition Vol. 2 by Jeff Lemire, art by Dustin Nguyen -- I will be honest, I was reading this primarily because I love how Nguyen paints space in watercolors. Otherwise, I'd say that this was a fun, easy read. I don't think the plot ever really hooked me but I liked it well enough. I'll probably pick up Ascender (the sequal series) at some point which has a more fantasy vibe I believe, because while this wasn't one of my top comics, I certainly don't dislike it. And also I do like whenever Nguyen does the watercolors. (I am a little annoyed that it appears that Effie has contracted dead mom syndrome in the Ascender though because I really liked her.)

Dawn of X vol. 3 by various -- I am continuing to poke my way through these because it looks like my library has a good chunk of them. It's honestly kind of fun reading this in an approximation of publishing time (picking up a new volume of 6 #Xs every few weeks). Marauders continues to be one of my favorites. Fallen Angels continues to not work for me, and it's always fun when it calls back to previous comics and I get to go 'sure, why not, might as well happen' as opposed to actually knowing the callbacks. (I am being serious here. I do want to read more X-men comics but I am also down to just vibe.)

The Forged Vol. 2: Home Sweet Home by Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann, art by Mike Henderson -- Look this is very by Greg Rucka like most of his original work. This comic is in the space marine genre which I am here for. I had read the first volume digitally, and I've come to the conclusion that this is just one of the comics I need to read physically because it's published in the same oversized format as Historia, and while the art doesn't have that insane level of detail, it still just breathes way better full sized whether than on my little tablet. I enjoyed this volume much more than the first and I think having it full sized was a big contribution (as well as the fact that I read the first volume while sitting in the back corner of a full car on the way to vacation which probably didn't help either.) This was also a downtime arc and I liked how it built out the characters and the world more rather than the more action focused first arc. Issue #9 is coming out next week I believe, so I'll be waiting for when the 3rd trade comes out and my library gets their hands on it to see how this next arc goes, but I'm looking forward to it!

Coffin Bound Vol. 1: Happy Ashes by Dan Watters, art by Dani -- I picked this up because I was curious about reading more of Watters' work, but I only ended up reading half of this before deciding it wasn't doing it for me. There were interesting elements, but I'm not sure what to say other than it just didn't click.

The Autumnlands Vol. 2 Woodland Creatures -- This continues to be right up my alley. I liked seeing more of the world and the implications of nuclear energy in this volume were very interesting. Seeing Dusty rub off on Learoyd, the plotline with the Galateas, and all the fun sci fi fantasy fusion of the world was all very fun and it left me sad that there's only 11 issues of this.

Sleepless Vol. 1 by Sarah Vaughn, art by Leila Del Duca -- Courtly intrigue/romance + Fantasy makes this quite different from a lot of the other comics I've been reading, but still very enjoyable. The artwork is beautiful for this (I love all the pretty dresses) and has a very nice atmosphere. I liked seeing Poppy trying to navigate the court after everything got shaken up on her and the worldbuilding was also interesting.

Tag 9 people you want to get to know better. I was tagged by @hayffiebird I have never been tagged in anything before so this is exiting!

Three ships:

Hayffie: My obsession with this ship comes in waves every once in a while. It has taken over my life occasionally since 2012 I believe. This ship is my main ho and my side ho. I love it! There is something about the opposite attract bit that makes me so fascinated. Haymitch and Effie also make for some great fanfic material.

Steggy: It’s good to have a healthy and wholesome ship in the mix as well. I love the badass woman x badass but sensitive man mix. They are the cutest and they also save the world. They are genuinely nice people whom deserve a good life. I love both of the characters on their own and I love them together. Agent Carter’s TV show is just peng, and it is the bane of my life that is was cancelled.

Tomshiv: My latest shipwreck on the other hand… they are not good people, they are not good for each other and you could argue that they make the world a worse place… buuuutttt… they are adorable. Tom, Mr. Darcy himself, is a sensitive asshole, and Shiv is a broken duckling looking for love while making fun of anyone who dares try. Their fighting is Shakespearian and they are thus my favourite soon to be probably divorced couple. Also, I gotta say, the acting is just 👌🏼👌🏼

First ever ship:

Probably gotta say Hayffie here too. I had no idea about fanfics, fandom or Tumblr before that. I remember beeing like 12 years old and spending my entire family trip to France reading fics. As a child that didn’t find much interesse in reading, this was a huge change. Gotta say, I think it improved my English skulle as well.

Last song: Gooey by Glass Animals is a vibe. I realy enjoy listening to the entire album. It just flows, you know.

Last movie: I can barely remember the last movie I watched. I have just been watching series lately. Succession and Barry has got me hooked. I feel like it might have been The Day After Tomorrow though.

Currently reading: War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

Currently watching: well well well, here’s the big one. SUCCESSION! And I can’t wait for the last two episodes to drop. To anyone considering watching it, I say go for it! It will have a proper ending and it is more about 3(4) sassy siblings and their cousin Greg, than it is about the logistics of running a Fortune 500 to the ground. Honestly, it’s such a great show. The acting, the filming, the writing and the characters are just superb. Powerful people acting like 5 year olds is just the best.

I am also watching the last season of Barry, another show that is really referring to watch. It is peak. I am also really happy that they are ending these great shows become the go stale, or before they are cancelled without a proper ending *cough* Westworld *cough* 1899.

Currently consuming: In about 5 min it will be a taco. 👌🏼

Currently craving: Fooood… I just got home from work and I am starving! Also, more Succession!

here’s how euphoria s3 can still work:

ngl if euphoria has an s3 i just wanna see all the girls happy in therapy and developing healthy repaired relationships and nate suffering. they need some succession writers pulling cousin greg succession whump levels of pathetic. make that man a loser as kat knew. not bc he isn’t living up to his expectations but bc he feels no shame about the harm he’s caused others. also, more interaction w elliot and nate just awkwardly in college altho i hope elliot meets a nice guy like a jock similar to who derek was and despite their differences, they grow to find happiness. maybe someone straight lace like lexi but social anxiety-ridden like rue and struggles to communicate, but in times of stress blurts out the truth and elliot just laughs bc he knows and is deeply intuitive.

like so far even when i’m in college nate is not relatable, and in fact the moment u get here you’re surrounded by ppl who are sometimes more advanced than u and i wanna see him crushed under that while refusing to improve and it killing him in this graphic, gory manner with intense greek mythological creature horror effects while the girls are motivated in whatever their choose to do w their lives but also make efforts to repair their relationships to one another.

the aesthetics revert to this glittery s1 while cassie adopts a darker, more effy stonem look but simply “darker and messy” but not fully emo like kat was, while dressing how she truly wants to dress w/o influence of maddy, but also in more complex mixed layers and patterns. lots of dark blues, maroon reds, blacks, greys, and silvers. some vivienne westwood archive looks that sounds cute and lexi wore a miu miu dress lol and bc cassie is now embracing her body but for her own sake and not anyone elses w/o feeling like she has to compensate to just exist. for once, she lets herself exist and dress as she wants even if others make fun of her or find it over the top, but it’s her.

and i’m assuming cassie finds friends who don’t give a shit abt her past w the leaks and in fact affirm she was a victim in that situation by those who manipulated her. the context of this is connected to kat, and rue narrates the negatives of what lat went thru similarly and closes the gap w her by acknowledging her presence (which levinson sounds scared to do) now that barbie is no longer present in the show.

also jules and rue seem to have mended things but i hope they talk bc a lot was left unsaid when they didn’t speak. cassie also needs to apologize to maddy bc it’s clear a part of her regrets her actions (ex: flaunting maddy’s abuser in her face) altho cassie is now part of nate’s abusive cycle and some of it is out of her control and she feels lonely, and knew inside that maddy and her family held that support nate and his disaffected parents could never replace. she does need to find friends outside of maddy tho bc part of her feels like she can’t always admit the truth to her, and college is the perfect atmosphere for new friends who acknowledge but don’t hate the old you.

it’s clear cassie never liked nate and liked the idea of someone who disregarded her past (even if she doesn’t know he was in on the reason the entire school demeans her) and i’d also like rue and lexi being roommates. lexi might be a writer but consider something else more “practical” like a stem field, and rue is undecided but considers becoming a child psychologist. i see jules as an artist that often brings awareness to childhood psychiatric abuses in her art as she grows popular, and moves to ny w maddy eventually

maddy and jules remain friends, and maddy decides to leave in east highland but adapt to college there first, as all she needed was a transition from her traumas associated w high school, and majors in fashion design, marketing, and fashion sustainability while also acing math bc surprise suprise this girl remembers everything. cassie i’m not so sure of, i think she’d be an excellent public speaker (obviously lmao) but i’m not sure what career she’d map out

So What Happened?

Greg, huh? Will he ever learn? Probably not. Riding the high of Bonnie actually speaking to him on prom night, Greg was all but walking on sunshine the next morning when the news broke about Effy and Leo. Greg had covered for Effy down at Franks’ when she blew off a shift to make out with Leo. He’d swapped cigarettes with Leo behind the bleachers. They’d been in and around his life for his whole life and then just like that...

Leo graduated in absentia and Greg, to his shock and delight, also graduated. What a time to be alive, huh? Everything felt like it had been turned upside down in Havensdale and the future was coming around way too fast for his liking.

Greg attended Founder’s Fest because that’s what we Havensdalers do! Plus, he’d been meaning to talk to Bonnie again. Who in their wildest, human, dreams could have predicted what would happen that day? Greg ran for his damn life, looking for Annie and Simon. Trying not to get eaten!? By dumb luck and some badass hunters, Greg made it.

When Havensdale became Domesdale, the compulsion that had been used on Havensdalers previously to Founder’s Day was broken. Greg remembered that killer vampire that had run rampant in Franks’ bar. He remembered being compelled to hurt Bonnie and how he’d stabbed himself in the leg to stop it. He remembered it all being compelled away and cleaned up by some government looking randos.

So, life kinda goes on in this messed up world, right? Greg fights with the feeling of being inadequate, of not being able to help, really. He does his best but he really doesn’t wanna get murdered by some monster (some of which...had been his pals, y’know?).

If one good thing came from all this carnage... He finally managed to get out, in words, just how sorry, how stupid he’d been and how much he had totally, embarrassingly, completely fallen in love with our Bonnie Brightman. And now they’re, like, y’know <3  

PS. Has definitely been a guest on Annie & Jamie’s apocalypse podcast that only reaches Havensdale!

📽 Effie Gray (2014)

I was thinking of what I was going to say in this post and was fully prepared to say I didn’t like this movie. Then I started thinking about it, and I realized that it wasn’t the movie I didn’t like. It was John Ruskin, the husband. And so I figured out that if I hated that character so much, and I hated him because of how he treated the other characters, then the actors did their jobs. And in that case, this movie is pretty amazing. I can honestly say that I really did feel for the characters. I was so mad at the husband for what he was doing to his wife. Dakota Fanning and Tom Sturridge were amazing together. Tom Sturridge’s character was so likable; I loved him. The plot is admittedly slow and tiresome at some points, but the characters are the important part of this movie. Their lives and personalities carry the story, and the actors were all amazing at portraying them.

Sex/nudity: 2/10 (a nude man seen from behind and from afar, a couple of scenes of implied sexual acts with nothing shown overtly)

Language: 0/10 (IMDb says none, I don’t remember any)

Violence: 1/10 (husband and wife arguing loudly, one scene where Effie flees from assault)

Overall rating: 7/10
