Laika seems to straighten, her shoulder blades pinching ( nearly ) together. It would've been best to ignore the accusation entirely. Just let it slide off like an appropriate simile, and investigate later how the whispers had spread. Instead, her jaw clenches and her stomach churns in anger and defeat.

Her denial comes out as sputtering, “ How could you know that, ” and dying protests. The damage is well and done. Charade of pretense is dropped with a nasty growl. Laika leans in, eyes dark, “ If the Threads are looking for their Laika, they'd best start digging up unmarked graves. That girl doesn't exist anymore, so it's about the only place they'll find her.
