The pit in her stomach is easier to ignore when she sees him making his way back over to her, mostly because as soon as her gaze meets his all she can think of is that she’s proud of him. And that’s crazy, isn’t it? How he’s gone from someone she knew about because Joel took her to his gigs, to someone she knows. Someone she’s sat in bars and diners and the back of a police car with, who somehow always seems to turn up exactly when she needs his particular brand of friendship. She’s glad she’s been able to return that favour tonight.

A smile tugs at her lips with surprising ease, given the road her thoughts had wandered down while she’d been watching him. Those thoughts are pushed as far away as possible as he comes to stand in front of her - tonight is his night, and she’s not about to ruin that.

“Come on, I’m buying you a drink.”
