Happy birthday, Finnegan.
I was writing this in the office at work the other day and my manager asked what I was doing and I answered that I was writing a story for my friend for their birthday because I didn't want to tell her I was writing fanfic. So, in true being friends with Lucy style, this is two days late. Sorry! No matter what, the creation of this character deserves to be celebrated.
This is set in an AU universe where the cubs are out.
CW: Food talk and a brief mention of alcohol
Rating: G
Please message me if I missed any content warnings or you think I need to change the ratings.
All characters (except Bailey, she's mine) belong to @lumosinlove.
“Friday night and the lights are lowwww, Looking out for a place to goooo,” Finn spun around the island, the wooden spoon at his lips providing the perfect microphone for his rendition. He halted in front of Logan, laughing at what he could tell was a disgruntled expression despite most of his face being covered by the hoodie he’d pulled tight around it, his hands covering the bottom half. “It’s my birthday, come and dance with me,” Finn pleaded, tugging at the overhang of Logan’s sleeve.
“Non, it is too early,” Logan grumbled. “Dance with Knutty.”
“Knutty is busy.” Finn threw a glance over his shoulder at Leo, smiling at the sight of his boyfriend humming to himself as he moved gracefully at the stove. Leo turned to meet his gaze, his damp hair forming golden curls that Finn thought made him look like a cherub.
“Here,” Leo tipped his head at the freshly prepared coffee. “Coffee’s ready, you can caffeinate him. Just needs sugar.”
Finn pressed his lips to Logan's forehead. "If bring you coffee will you dance with me after?" Logan huffed but nodded, pushing his hands through the holes in his sleeves to receive the steaming cup.
"Okay, deal, but I'm starting the song again." Finn's grin was met with a low groan. After drawing the drink out as long as he could, technically, Logan did fulfil his promise, standing to reluctantly move his body to the music.
Finn saw the exact moment Logan chose mischief, his bright green eyes lighting up even more than usual. "Catch me and I'll dance with you properly."
Finn raised an eyebrow, matching Logan's fast walk around the island. He was the first to risk Leo's wrath, picking up the speed to a jog, and took advantage of his longer arms to close the gap.
"Got' cha," Finn grasped Logan around the waist, Logan's head tipping back in an uncharacteristically bright laugh as Finn reeled him in. "You are the dancing queen, young and sweet," Finn sang loudly, spinning Logan away from him and pulling him back when their fingertips threatened to split.
Logan placed his palm on Finn's chest, letting himself be rocked to the music. "You should be singing this to Leo, not me."
Finn glanced down at Logan and despite the fact no words were vocalised in that moment, their eyes said a lot. In an almost synchronised moment they turned their gaze to Leo.
"Nutter butter," Finn said. "It's your turn to be serenaded."
"Oh no, what a shame, breakfast is ready," Leo smirked, pouring a generous helping of maple syrup over one of the bagel stacks; Logan's. Finn considered protesting, but the sight of his own plate was too tempting.
"The serenading will recommence at a later time," Finn insisted, grabbing one of the plates and carrying it through to the dining table. They didn't eat here often, preferring either the island or the sofa, but today it had been decorated with balloons and presents had been piled at the end.
***
"That was amazing, thanks Le." Finn already missed the stack of bagels; bacon and a poached egg layered between them, and dripping with hollandaise sauce. "Can I know what you've got planned now?"
"No problem, anything for the birthday boy." Leo swallowed a bite, sliding one of the wrapped boxes towards Finn. "We told you, it's a surprise. You can open presents though."
Finn worked his way through the gifts, too many of them from Leo and Logan. There was nothing extravagant but they seemed endless and each one reminded him how much they knew him. His favourite chapstick. A crate of beer from a craft supplier he really enjoyed. A set of massage oils and a promise to help him use them. Some monogrammed golf balls. And his favourite, a handwritten letter from the both of them that he would treasure forever. He read the cards from the rest of the team through damp eyes.
“Can you tell me the plan now?” Finn asked the question again once he’d worked his way through the gifts and the cards. Logan dragged his lips against his teeth, as if he was physically keeping the words from spilling from his mouth.
“Don’t give us those bambi eyes,” Leo shook his head, throwing a balled up napkin in Logan’s direction, the item hitting him square in the forehead. “Don’t you dare tell him.”
“I didn’t say anything!”
“I can tell you want to,” Leo retorted. “We have to clear up first. Put the music back on. I want to dance now.” It was much later that Finn came to recognise this for the distraction technique that it was, hence the three of them were arguing over the lyrics to Montero when the sound of the doorbell rang through the apartment.
Finn opened the door, a bounce still in his step and swaying his hips to an imaginary beat. He blinked at the figure in front of him, closing the door for a second before opening again. “Alex!” Finn pulled his brother into a tight hug, slapping his hand on the broad of his back. “Sorry, I thought I was hallucinating. What are you doing here?”
“I’ve come to see my baby brother on his birthday, obviously,” Alex laughed, squeezing Finn back until he struggled out of his hold.
“But,” Finn spluttered. “You were in Florida yesterday? I saw your Insta story.”
“I caught the first flight this morning, I’ve got to be back tomorrow for a photoshoot.”
“That’s crazy,” Finn said, shaking his head. “You’re crazy.” He tugged Alex inside, leading him down the hall into the kitchen. “Look who’s here!”
“Hey Alex,” Logan thrust his fist for Alex to bump his fist against. Finn looked between Leo and Logan, both of their faces showing no sign of surprise.
“Did you know?!”
***
It took a while for Leo and Logan to convince Finn they didn’t need to come along and he should spend time with Alex, but now they were alone, he was realising exactly how much he had missed his brother. The conversation flowed easily, Alex having almost an entire lifetime of practise at following Finn’s leaps in topics.
“So, I booked us in for a pottery class,” Alex glanced at Finn briefly before setting his eyes back on the road. “I thought you’d like that. It’s very tactile, y’know?”
“Nice,” Finn grinned. “I’ve always wanted to do that. I hope you brought spare clothes with you, because things are about to get messy.”
It was true. Finn had binge watched The Great Pottery Throw Down, so he knew learning to make even the simplest of things would be more difficult than it looked, but somehow the two of them managed to get the clay everywhere.
“Alex, that's too fast!” Bailey, the instructor warned, but it was too late. The clay sloped to the side, thinning out as it flew off the wheel and hit Finn on the cheek.
“Oops,” Alex grimaced. “Sorry, bud.”
Finn sent a mock scowl in his brother’s direction as he peeled the clay from his skin, dumping it back on Alex’s wheel. However, O’Hara’s were nothing if not perfectionists, and the two of them were determined to create something good. Neither of their first bowls came out right; Finn’s was too tall and thin, Alex’s was short and thick. When they tried again, Finn overcorrected, creating something that resembled Alex’s first. Alex’s second attempt was going well until it spontaneously collapsed.
“Third time’s the charm,” Alex huffed, manipulating his clay back into a lump to try again. He was right, giving a triumphant smile as he watched the grey ball transform. His work wasn’t as good as the ones filling the shelves opposite, their price tags indicative of the skill that had gone into them, but it was relatively smooth and definitely a bowl.
Finn whistled through his teeth, admiring Alex’s work. He laughed as he looked down at his own third endeavour, a small stumpy thing that could perhaps hold five Cheetos. “I tried.”
“Hey, no,” Alex argued. “Give it another go if you want. You’re nearly there.”
Finn rolled his shoulders back, pursuing his lips with determination. Alex watched Finn push his foot on the pedal again, his elbows tucked into his torso as he worked the clay.
“That’s it, apply a little more pressure on the bottom than the top.” Alex encouraged him. Finn smiled, his brother was always his biggest supporter. It reminded him of the time Alex had watched him tie and re-tie his shoelaces over and over again until he’d finally mastered it and could prove to their parents that he was ready for that new pair of sneakers.
“I guess I’m not needed here,” Bailey joked. “ You’re looking good, Finn. How about you two wash up and I’ll get those mugs you wanted to paint. We’ll get these in the kiln later and they’ll be ready for collection in a few days.”
Painting the mugs was a much more relaxing process, both Finn and Alex decorating two mugs each, one for each of their partners. Bailey sat with them and Finn watched in awe as she quickly made stencils whenever they needed assistance getting the designs in their heads onto the ceramic. By the time they’d finished, the three of them had come up with an elaborate plan for Alex to get back at his team mate for filling his hotel room with balloons and Finn concluded that Bailey was the coolest person ever.
“Damn,” Alex glanced at his phone. “It’s nearly 4. Let’s get you back to your boys before I start getting threatening messages from Tremblay.”
“Trust me,” Finn snorted. “It’s Knutty you need to be scared of.”
“Crazy goalies, am I right?”
***
“Wait, why are we at the aquarium?”
“You’ll see.” Alex’s smirk was infuriating. Finn craned his head forward, excitement bubbling inside him. Alex rolled his eyes as the engine rumbled to a stop. “Go on then,” he said, tilting his head towards a modern looking building, all glass and sharp angles.
“You’re coming as well?” Finn asked when Alex slid out the car too, locking the sleek black rental behind him. “Not that I mind.I just thought you had a flight to get?”
Alex shook his head. “ No, I’m not staying for long. I want to see your reaction though.”
“My reaction to what? We all know I love the aquarium but I’m not going to explode or anything.”
“I told you, you’ll see.” There was that smirk again.
Finn held in the urge to stamp his foot. “Urgh! You’re so annoying.”
“Love you too,” Alex laughed, pushing through a set of tall glass doors. A sarcastic quip rested on Finn’s tongue, but it shattered as he looked up to see Leo and Logan waiting in the entrance, backpacks slung over their shoulders.
“Lo! Knutty!” Finn jogged the short distance, “I missed you.”
“Glad to know I’m such good company,” Alex deadpanned.
“It’s only been a few hours,” Leo chuckled, accepting Finn’s hug. Finn smiled, lifting his head for Leo to place a soft kiss on his lips. “Did you have a good day?”
“Yeah, we went to this pottery studio, and then we got burgers and shakes like we used to when we were kids,” Finn nodded. Oh! I made you something.” He turned to Alex who had stepped into place beside him, holding his hands out. Alex grunted, but pulled the tote bag from his shoulder, placing two carefully wrapped items into his hands. “Open it!”
“Alright, give us a chance, Harz,” Logan laughed, tearing at the delicate tissue. Leo was much more methodical, peeling back the layers neatly enough the paper could probably be re-used.
“Did you do this?” Leo looked between the mug and Finn. He ran his fingers over the shiny glaze, a dark blue with tiny white stars scattered over. Inside, a moon phase created a border around the rim.
“I didn’t make the mug. We made bowls, but they won’t be ready for collection for a few days. I did paint it though. With some help from stencils. There’s a little note in the paper somewhere.”
“I couldn’t bring you the real ones, but hopefully these will do,” Leo read, his voice cracking slightly towards the end of the sentence. “Finn.”
Logan whined, the sound curling in the back of his throat. “It’s your birthday, you’re not supposed to give us things.” The mug he held had been painted white and the words ‘sweet like honey’ written over it in Finn’s neatest attempt at cursive along with several bees.
“Do you like it?” Finn rocked on his feet and Alex knocked their shoulders together, a small gesture of reassurance. “Look it’s you,” he pointed out a bee that had a small red cap on its head. The French left Logan’s mouth so quickly Finn couldn’t even begin to parse the words, let alone make any sort of effort to translate them.
“He’s mad that you are making him emotional in public,” Leo provided at Finn’s distressed frown.
“Aww, you do like it,” Finn grinned, wrapping his arms around Logan.
“Be careful! You’re going to break it.”
Alex cleared his throat. “As beautiful as this is, I’m going to have to go soon, so if we could do the big reveal?”
“Alex,” Finn almost growled. “I swear I will phone Nat - wait, what big reveal?”
Leo swung a backpack off his shoulder. Finn only now realised he was carrying two, one of which belonged to Finn. “We’re staying at the aquarium!”
“Well, yeah? Why else would we be here?”
“Non, Harzy, “ Logan laughed. “We’re sleeping at the aquarium. Overnight. Under the shark tunnel to be precise.”
“Oh my fucking God!” Finn couldn’t contain his grin as pulled Leo into the hug too, “Is this a joke? This better not be a joke.”
“Fish, there are children around,” Leo scolded. “And no, it’s not a joke. That would be mean.”
Finn let his boyfriends go, spinning around to face Alex. “Al, are you sure you don’t want to stay? This is going to be so cool!”
“I really have got to go soon,” Alex shrugged, a soft smile on his lips. He jerked his head in Logan’s direction. “Somebody count how many times Finn screams though, please.”
***
“Look!” Finn gasped, pointing up at the glass tunnel above where the three of them lay in their sleeping bags. “It’s a nurse shark.”
Logan rolled over, propping himself on his elbow and looking at Leo. “We’re not getting any sleep tonight are we?”
“I don’t think so.” Leo chuckled, shaking his head. He pointed to the tunnel. “What’s the weird looking one, Fish?”
“That’s a wobbegong, they blend into the sand,” Finn answered, curling into Leo’s side. Logan lay back down behind him, having offered Finn the middle spot for tonight. “This has been the best birthday,” he sighed happily.
“Happy birthday, Harzy,” Logan squeezed his hand through the layers of their bags. “Tell us more about the sharks.”

The Big Hero 6/Pokemon Crossover We All Wish Would Happen
Over the past couple of weeks, members of the Big Hero 6 fandom have been drawing/making mock-ups of the team with their respective Pokemon partners. Now, in total accordance with being late to every single trend ever, I will now do the same, but I won’t be backing it up with wondrous drawings.
Mostly because I can’t draw. Some of the members were really obvious, and some...weren’t. Out of everyone, Hiro was actually the hardest one, and I actually am still not really sold on my choice. That’s mostly because the specific Pokemon is not his schtick. There’s not really a Robot Pokemon. There are certain members that were tremendously easy.
And we’re going to start with one of them: Go Go. 1.) The picture I drew of Chibi Go Go and Cinderace (which I still have to finish, for the record) doesn’t actually depict the Pokemon I’d put with her. Cinderace would be her second choice. The first?
Falinks, the Formation Pokemon.
Genwunners may not know this one, because it’s from the newest Pokemon games, but it’s very symbolic of Go Go: there’s six of them, it’s pure Fighting-type, and it has a signature move in No Retreat, which is basically a Pokemon version of “Woman up!”. It raises all of its stats in exchange for it not being able to escape from battle.
But Go Go never escapes from anything, so it’s appropriate.
Plus they have the discs as well. Cinderace would be her backup, mostly because of the speed and rabbit parellels for her roommate, who is up next.
2.) Honey Lemon actually had the most options for her, because she’s the cutesy one. That means she can be handed literally any Fairy type and call it a day, but what fun would that be?
Especially because there’s another bunny Pokemon that she’d be with...and that’s Lopunny.
It doesn’t really delve into her superhero side because it’s a bunny and cute and furry and all that jazz, but imagine HL’s completelyf amazed face when she gets one. The squeeing would be nonstop.
Her secondary would be a Fairy type, and something that would change colored flowers based on the mood: Flabebe.
3.) Wasabi was also entirely way too easy, and he gets, in my opinion, one of the coolest Pokemon that was introduced back in X and Y: Aegislash.
I can’t even think of a proper backup for him; Aegislash is just that good. Plus, if worse came to worse, Wasabi could grab him and swing it around himself. But not too much, because the Aegislash line have a thing about possessing people with their tassels. His backup is another blade-related one: Bisharp.
Dark/Steel, cool design, somehow got Laser Focus as a level-up move in the latest games. Pretty much a no-brainer. 4.) Karmi is also an easy one, and her inspiration came from one of the occupants of her lab when Hiro came to offer his help in “City of Monsters”: Mr. Varicella Zoster.
What Pokemon is cute, semi-translucent, looks like something scientific, and is also a psychic powerhouse (you’re assuming Varicella Zoster is not)? You guessed it.
Reuniclus. The Multiplying Pokemon. The origin of it is based off of cells and amoebas, which is a perfect thing for a very scientific person like Karmi. And the imaginary story in my head has her getting her partner first through the mysterious means that the team has to investigate. Her back-up plays off of her other project: the tech rose. And the only Grass/Steel Pokemon (Ferroseed/Ferrothorn) isn’t really much of a fit. So we’ll play off of her wannabe superheroics with another plant-based masked powerhouse: Roserade.
What’s better than a bouquet that has flowers for fists? Nothing. 5.) Fred is a mascot for a “living”, and I think it would be funny if his partner would be very similar to a mascot, and that would be Bewear.
No, it doesn’t have cool Fire/Ice-type moves, and it’s not a lizard, but it’s a pun name, and I think Fred would appreciate a Pokemon with a pun name. Plus, I couldn’t really find anything that had Fire, Ice, and was a lizard.
At least with Bewear you can chain-breed Ice Punch onto it from Cubchoo, thus making Cubchoo an even greater Pokemon than before. His backup is one of the Pokemon based off of kaiju: Tyranitar.
Do you think that Fred is actually a Pokemon guy, or is Hiro the Pokemon guy? Methinks it would be a collaborative effort to try to get everyone else to know what the heck they’re talking about.
6.) You didn’t think I would forget about Baymax, would you? Now, you’d think that with being a healthcare companion would make me want to go for the obvious choice.
Blissey. And...you’d be partially right. But Baymax can’t just sit on the sidelines and heal, even though that’s his...purpose. Nah, we gotta get something a little more...metal.
Melmetal, to be precise. He’s very Baymax-y in the anime when Ash has him, and plus he’s got a two-fist move in Double Iron Bash.
Oh, and we’ll just give Mini-Max Meltan for funzies. 7.) As I was writing this up, I scanned back through it and was like “Who am I forgetting?”.
Oh nuts, Hiro is the one I was forgetting. So here’s the thing. I actually really like the idea of giving him Magnezone, because of “lul magnetism” and all that.
And I was struggling to give him a back-up when I saw @baymaksu and his drawing of him and Riolu, and it just clicked for me.
Plus the mental image of Hiro manipulating Aura just like Ash gets me excited. So there it is. My long, exhaustive post about Big Hero 6 and their Pokemon partners, based off my twenty some odd years of being a Pokemon trainer. I wonder if I should do the villains next. Or maybe the Beta Team. Or both.
#big hero 6#big hero 6 the series#hiro hamada#karmi#honey lemon#go go tomago#wasabi#fredzilla#baymax#minimax#pokemon#this took way too long for me to type#pokemon partners#wonder who obake would have#liv amara#di amara#chief cruz#megan cruz#evolution#varicella zoster

Lots of feelings and thoughts under readmore, but for those who don’t want to read it: if you are on here reading this and you ALSO have a DeviantArt you still use (even if it’s very sparingly) that you’d be willing to share with me, can you shoot a DM? I’ve decided to rekindle my old account for a lot of reasons. Or at least try it out.
It’s similar to the reason I came back to Tumblr and the reason I made my own shitty hand-coded HTML disaster website. We’re all feeling it: how shitty the internet is now. I’m trying out a lot of different approaches to find a healthier relationship to communities, and being an artist and a person on the internet.
I basically had a breakdown this weekend over probably the stupidest possible thing that made me really look at myself and what I’m doing. Or... trying to do. What the hell I’m trying to accomplish.
Because I made that OoT Link amiibo I was so proud of, and I AM SO HAPPY WITH IT. I mean, I literally made it because I like playing OoT with the Zora Tunic and Hover Boots on, so I made a figure FOR ME based on MY TASTES. And it came out SO GOOD I literally could not be happier. And I posted it, and all of my friends were like “Leo that is so cool holy shit.” Which sounds like... the perfect outcome, right?
Except my brain has been fried by Number Go Up and I just felt this emptiness and dread, and I came to a really uncomfortable and disturbing realization as to why.
Like, a lot of shit I post is kind of intentionally for the niche-est of niche audiences, so I kind of expect 99% of my content to get 3 likes from my close friends and that’s about it, as it should be. But... I think, because for once I was actually posting about something that more than 8 people in the universe care about, and (in my opinion) I made something of pretty damn good quality, I had this expectation that I’d... go fucking viral or something.
(I really, really think my couple years being addicted - and I do mean addicted in the unhealthy brain-destroying sense - to Reddit is largely to blame for this. My Yggdrasill ToS cosplay was at one point the highest voted post on the Tales of subreddit; it was easy to feel like a micro-celebrity of sorts with that kind of reaction. Quitting Reddit was legitimately the best thing I’ve ever done for my mental health but it kind of permanently altered my expectations for either Immediate and Immense Approval And Worship, or worthlessness.)
So even though I made something that was supposed to be self-indulgent, and the people whose opinions I care about all gave me glowing positive feedback, I was disappointed because I posted something that Could Be Popular and it wasn’t. And I just kind of sat with that for a second and thought back to posting really shitty fanart in middle school and having a circle of online friends who were also shitty learning artists and we would just talk about video games and draw together and... well I kind of just wondered where the hell it went wrong.
When did I start performing for an imaginary audience of strangers so often, so frequently, and so intensely that it soured my ability to be happy with one of the straight up coolest things I’ve made recently??
And the thing is... well, as far as spaces to share art, what I currently have is...
* Twitter, where there is nothing even close to an archive of past art and everything is just instant snapshots soon to be forgotten * Tumblr, where the site-wide search functions are a hot mess and I feel like I’m competing with 50% the fact that no one can find anything and 50% Mona Lisas on display everywhere under the same tags I’m using * Instagram, which somehow has both the “instantaneous snapshots and then it’s worthless” problem AND the “everything I post is competing with professionals” problem (and not just professionals at the art form, but professionals at SOCIAL MEDIA - because curating your art for interaction on social media is its own whole thing) * Discord but I’ll be real there’s baggage there I’m too exhausted to get into right now. There are some promising spaces though for community, but there is absolutely no form of archive or way to look back on personal growth * My website, which is the only space that feels right for how I want my art to be experienced, but also is completely lacking the community aspect.
So, I looked at my old DeviantArt account. I KNOW about the whole f*cking disk horse with eneftitties and I hate it so much and I’m not even going into it. But my old DeviantArt account has shit I posted in 2012 on there, shit I posted in 2008 on there, and has space for journals and groups and fanfiction and interacting with other users while also centering (or at least, it seems to me) art.
And it’s just about the only space that has felt like that, honestly. Where I can be an artist and a person, post things I like with a little story under them under whatever dimensions, even SLIGHTLY customize my landing page, join little communities of like-minded people.
I logged in and, well unsurprisingly it’s a ghost town and only like 1 person I “Watched” a billion years ago still posts. But then I turned on full FFIX brain and went to search for pictures of Freya Crescent, and in an experience I haven’t had on any other goddamn website in as long as I can remember, I received A HUGE VARIETY OF PICTURES OF EXACTLY THAT, from dates as recent as the past couple years to literally over 15 years ago. Very rough amateurish MS paint drawings showed up right next to professional quality polished pieces and they were all what I was searching for.
Like, holy fuck, HOW fucked is it that THAT experience - searching for a topic on an art site, and seeing that topic, ONLY that topic, and a huge variety of results in it - is so rare that it stopped me in my tracks?
But, like, it’s obviously sad too. It’s sad clicking through the banners of all the old groups I joined and seeing the last posts from like 2014. It’s sad that part of the reason it’s easy to find old drawings of Freya Crescent is because next to nobody has uploaded any in the past 5 years. It’s sad that eneftitties are fucking artists over so bad a lot of them jumped ship in protest, and it’s sad that I feel like I’m engaging with a side of this site that stopped really being alive 10 years ago.
But I’m giving it a try anyway. Because GOD I just want to have a place to share art that isn’t a competition and isn’t polished and professional and beautiful and might let me make and maintain friendships that I actually care about. I’m not trying to compete with pros here I’m just trying to post my things and be myself and have people who might like it be able to find it, so I can find them too. Maybe I want to join an FFIX fan club group and look at a billion pictures of Zidane and Garnet. WHO IS TO SAY.
Anyway.... this is 70% vent post, 30% desperate plea if any of you are on DA to hit me up and let me know what your username is because I would love to log in and see people I know and care about and get excited about what they’re making, instead of just seeing empty long-dead long-abandoned accounts and wondering what those people are up to.

ICON Magazine: Cover Story: Million Dollar Bill (By Jessica Bailey)
Bill Skarsgård returns as the big-headed, balloon-toting demonic clown in IT Chapter Two. ICON sits down with the next big actor in Hollywood
NEW YORK CITY: Bill Skarsgård is talking me through how he mastered the sinister, bone-chilling laugh of Stephen King’s evil clown, Pennywise, in horror film It Chapter Two. “I wanted the laugh to sound like someone who is having a panic attack and is almost about to cry,” the 29-year-old Swedish actor explains. Suddenly, he begins cackling, his tall frame – which was seconds before slumped in his chair in the hotel room – rises and his eyes become so intense and fixated on something imaginary on the grey carpet between us. His voice is shaky, crackly, almost gasping for air. You feel like he could either lunge at you or burst into a million pieces at any given moment. It’s scary. “Even doing it out loud evokes a kind of unsettling feeling in myself,” Skarsgård says coming back to reality. “I kind of like it.”
Theatrical, serious and intelligent. It’s fascinating watching the actor come in and out of character; it seems as simple as flicking a light switch on and off. But Skarsgård insists the actual process on the It set – of which he, the human, disappears underneath layers of prosthetics – took more work than what I’d just witnessed. “I would scream and laugh hysterically before takes and reach a certain level of adrenaline to help me get into character for the scene,” he explains. By his own admission, Pennywise was by far the most physically and mentally draining character Skarsgård has played. But when I tell him I can’t seem to un-see Pennywise when I look at him, he almost shudders with distaste. “You see Pennywise in me?” he asks. “I think this is the first time anybody has said that. I don’t like to think too much about being associated with a murderous clown. I thought the makeup was my mask.”
While the wheedling and lethal villain is Skarsgård’s most notable role to date – and he’s brilliant in it, by the way – you might also recognise him from the 2017 mystery thriller Atomic Blonde (with Charlize Theron), the 2016 sci-fi film The Divergent Series: Allegiant (with Shailene Woodley) or Netflix’s supernatural drama Hemlock Grove. The actor has a slew of upcoming films, too, including thriller The Devil All the Time with fellow heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland, and drama Nine Days will see him return to fantastical fare alongside up-and-comer Zazie Beetz. To answer the obvious question, yes.
Skarsgård is related to 43-year-old Alexander Skarsgård, who is his older brother and is best known for his roles in True Blood and Big Little Lies. Both grew up in Stockholm in a family of 10, in which four of the eight children became actors. Their father, Stellan, is also a very famous actor in Sweden and starred as Professor Gerald Lambeau in Good Will Hunting. Post his ICON cover shoot in TriBeCa, NYC, we give the younger Skarsgård some pennies for his thoughts. Here, he discusses his titular character and the vast differences between his native Sweden, where no one locked the doors, and Hollywood, where men in clown makeup is a normal sight on the main strip.
ICON: Unlike Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker – an unhinged man in clown makeup – you essentially had to get inside the head of an evil and maniacal thing. How did you prepare for this role?
SKARSGÅRD: In a way, it’s even more abstract getting into the head of a madman because he’s not a man, he’s a thing. He’s a creature, an entity, so we had to come up with what the rules were for the character or the creature and then kind of humanise it in a way for me to be able to relate to it. He’s kind of the embodiment of evil – everything that’s nasty in people, he is. He’s a bully, he thrives off pain and fear and he’s mean. I used to draw on animals as a reference point a lot, like Jaws. The shark in Jaws is a monster, but it’s an animal. It’s going out trying to eat humans because it’s hungry and that element is in Pennywise as well; he’s hungry and he needs to feed. But what makes him evil and sinister is him taking pleasure out of feeding or pleasure of frightening and tormenting young children. In the first movie, the kids would cry and he would mock the kids crying and I thought that was like pretty much as evil as it gets, when you’re not only making a kid cry but you’re enjoying the fact that you’re making a kid cry. There are those people in the real world who are that bad, but I kind of wanted to go through the character mentally and think, “What is the most monstrous and evil thing I can think of?” and those things kind of came to mind.
ICON: Did you look to other famous clowns in history at all?
SKARSGÅRD: Not really. I watched Bozo The Clown and Ronald McDonald a little bit. There’s kind of a few of those iconic clowns, but the thing we didn’t want to do too much, or at least my entry way into the character, was not make him like this [makes goofy noises] doo-di-doo clown kind of a thing. Because I wanted Pennywise to have this really off thing about him. Also, Tim Curry’s clown [he portrayed Pennywise in the 1990 TV adaptation of King’s novel It) was very much more this villain, old-timey clown. That type of performance was great, but we wanted to do something different for this version. I didn’t go too far into the studying of a clown’s mimicry, but I took little pieces of what I liked and incorporated it into Pennywise.
ICON: At the time of your It audition, you lived with housemates and couldn’t practise Pennywise’s evil laugh in the house, so you had to do it in the car on the way to the audition. Tell me about that drive – in full clown makeup. Were people staring?
SKARSGÅRD: [Laughs] Yeah, that was for the callback audition. I had a version of what became his laugh pretty early on. I wanted it to sound like someone having a panic attack and it’s almost about to be a cry. That amplified became the laugh. Like it’s not someone who’s happy, it’s someone who maybe is miserable and almost having a crazy panic attack with its laugh. Even doing it out loud evokes a kind of unsettling feeling in myself that I kind of liked. But, yeah, I was driving around with this kind of basic clown makeup on and was just trying screams and laughs and everything. If it were recorded, it would have almost been a cliché of an actor’s life in Hollywood; it was so ridiculous. Going to the audition, there was only street parking, so I had to park the car and walk my way into the casting director’s office, which is right by Hollywood Boulevard, so there were construction workers out the front. When they looked at me, they didn’t even flinch. That’s just what Hollywood is, I guess. It’s like, “There’s a man walking around with a clown face laughing to himself” [laughs].
ICON: What was your experience like when you first came to Hollywood? Were there stray clowns?
SKARSGÅRD: I came to LA for the first time when I was seven years old and then again when I was 10. I’ve been travelling there since I was fairly young because of my dad, who would shoot movies out here as well. I don’t remember my perception of LA very much – I liked the weather, I liked the mall, the Beverly Center was the coolest thing ever. You know, Footlocker! At that time, you could get sneakers in America that you definitely couldn’t get in Sweden. I had all the Nike out fits.
ICON: Your brother Alexander has said he’s not a method actor when he takes on dark and dramatic roles. Are you a method actor?
SKARSGÅRD: No, I don’t need to stay in character. That approach doesn’t make sense for me. But everyone has different ways of reaching what they need to reach and I’m definitely not method, but I have my own methods. With Pennywise, it was less about character and more about the energy. You need to find a state of energy that is true for the scene that you’re playing. So say you’re doing a really emotional scene, you need to find that energy or that chemical in your body – which is all it is to me at least – and when you trigger it, tears can start. A talented actor can trigger it chemically. In your body you feel like you’re about to start crying, you make yourself start crying and it’s a chemical reaction to it, you feel it in your body. You need to reach that place before you go into the scene and that’s the sort of method that I work with.
ICON: How did this method work with Pennywise?
SKARSGÅRD: He was a very particular kind of character. He’s always so expressive and energetic. I would scream and laugh hysterically before takes and reach a certain level of adrenaline to help me get into character for the scene.
ICON: We’ve seen dark characters get to actors before. Australian actor Heath Ledger and his iconic role as the Joker – and his clown-like villain – is an extreme example of this. How do you get out of that Pennywise headspace when you arrive home at night?
SKARSGÅRD: I also heard it’s kind of a misconception; that’s a romantic idea that Heath died of the Joker performance. From all accounts I’ve heard, he really enjoyed it and he wasn’t method either.
ICON: He reportedly was very immersed in the character…
SKARSGÅRD: Oh, completely, but from actors who worked with him on the set, they were like, “He would talk about his daughter.” We have this romantic idea that “Oh, this man, he went crazy or he went to the darkest place ever and he couldn’t figure his way out.” As the public, we like those types of stories and sometimes they’re true and sometimes actors fabricate that truth in order for them to seem a little bit more remarkable. So you talk about his or her performance as, “Oh, they did all these things,” and that’s what made it so great. Sometimes I feel like some actors maybe want to feel a little bit extra special in that regard. If I go and I have a very particular type of scene, like if I’m hurting someone or if I’m being awful, that doesn’t feel good afterwards. I think the worst is not like a character like Pennywise or those kinds of villainous roles – they’re dark but they’re fun, the character enjoys what they’re doing – the characters that will really get to you are the characters that are depressed or inflicted by pain. Say you play someone who is so depressed that they are about to commit suicide. Like, if that is your day, every day going into that mindset, you’re not going to be a happy person, because your character is not happy.
ICON: Pennywise though…
SKARSGÅRD: Pennywise is enjoying what he is doing, and in the same way Joker is as well; they’re dark but they’re enjoying it. You’re playing a character who enjoys the darkness, so that is what you have to access, and you don’t have to access the lack of self-worth or characters who are paranoid or in their own head and stuff like that. There is a movie that I’m about to start doing and you read the character and he’s very unlikeable: paranoid, insecure, a pathological liar, mentally ill. As a result, he goes into this kind of schizophrenic state. I read that script and I was like, “This is going to be really, really tough for me to do. I’m going to feel like shit doing it because it’s a character who’s losing his mind throughout the whole movie.” That is the state I have to go into, so when I’m coming home from work and I’ve been in that mental state, I think those things will affect how you feel during the production of the film.
ICON: Some creepy things went down in Derry, Maine. You’re from Stockholm in Sweden – what was it like growing up there and in a household with, like, a million people?
SKARSGÅRD: It was great. Stockholm is a wonderful place for a kid. I grew up in what would be called an extremely gentrified neighbourhood, but it used to be a working class neighbourhood. It was very bohemian and we went to school with immigrants and people from different places around the world. It felt like a very diverse upbringing – at least compared to a place like LA, which is the most secluded, segregated place there is. So Stockholm was wonderful in the way that you were exposed to all these different cultures and people. You could attend different classes and we were all just going to the same schools, there were no private schools or none of that. I’m extremely happy that that was my background. It’s healthy for kids to be exposed to all of that, and my family – a big, big family – our home was always the home that you would bring your friends to. That was true for all of our siblings. Sometimes there would be like 10-15 kids hanging out in our rooms, because our parents very much had an open- door policy – nobody knocked and we never locked the doors. Everybody just walked in and out – it was a big party.

Skype “Date” with Sam//March 27, 2020
Para: Skype “Date” with Sam.
Rating: PG.
Pairing: Blam BFFs. Mentions of Seblaine.
When: Friday Afternoon- March 27, 2020
Location: LeFay University(Boston)/Tokyo, Japan (Shibuya to be exact.)
Notes: A short self para where Sam teases Blaine over Skype and gets him thinking about things.
Warnings: Talks of futures and weddings and children.
“Sooo. When’s the wedding?”
Blaine jerked his head up from his text from Sebastian and focused his confused gaze on his best friend, Sam Evans. Sam was smiling, a goofy, big and toothy thing made sillier by the fact that Sam looked like Marvel’s Thor had wandered into a country western store. His blond hair pulled back into a low ponytail to display the weird mustache his oldest and best had decided suited him for his stay in Japan. Before Blaine could ask him what he was on about, Sam spoke up. “I mean you can hardly take your eyes off your phone. Dude, you should see your gross mushy, lovey dovey face. Like, get married already.” Blaine ducked his head sheepishly, shooting Sebastian an I'll see you in a few text, making sure to tell him he loved him before shoving his phone into his pocket so he wouldn’t be distracted.
“Sorry, Sam.” He mumbled and even though Sam was smiling and his tone was good natured and teasing, Blaine still felt bad. He and Sam never got to see each other face to face. It’d been going on three years since they were last in the same country and Skyping was a rarity. The whole reason for the call was to figure out the details for Sam’s trip back to America (Sam still didn’t know the month, let alone what day he’d be here) and all they’d managed to do was tease each other. “But, to be fair, I totally saw the mushy, lovey dovey eyes you gave Yume when she walked in not five minutes ago so I guess I’ll be waiting for my invitation to your wedding.” he rolled his eyes, trying not to smile as he adjusted his screen.
Sam, to his credit just shrugged. “We’d be the hottest husband and wife around. She’s the coolest person I know, next to me and then maybe you anyway. She’s like my other best friend, so it wouldn’t even be much of a change. Anyway, how are you, how’s the boyfriend besides sending you texts when it’s my turn to talk to you, Blainers.” Sam paused pursed his lips and rolled his eyes for dramatics at that statement. Blaine laughed and shook his head at the terrible nickname.
“I’m good, Sam. We’re both good. And it’s my fault. I messaged him first. Plus, you called me about an hour earlier than you said you were going to, remember?” The banter went on for another hour. They talked about Blaine’s dad and if it was weird to be taught by his parent. They talked about Sam’s anime drawings and his cool girlfriend and how they were getting on living together in the smallest apartment known to man. What it was like to live in Shibuya and if Sam missed living in America. All things they could talk about in text but, it was the next best thing to having Sam with him and it made Blaine feel good. And it was much needed. Sam was a reminder that they’d both gone through a lot (Blaine with his mom and Sam with his family's financial struggles) and both of them had come out good people at the end of the day. The conversation was finally directed to the visit when Sam’s brain somehow took him a completely different direction. As it always did. It was like he was on a loop and had looped back around.
“But, like, you do want to marry him, right? He’s like your world. And, I mean the next step is to live together, duh, but then you could ask him to marry you and that would be super cool. And then you could adopt a kid, or whatever two dudes do, I dunno, and you could name the kid after your best friend Sam. I’d even be cool with his middle name being David after your other, less best friend, David. And then you raise that kid and one day that kid has a kid and you two become grandparents and then you’re old together and happy and bam! That’s life, right? It’s, what do you say all the time? Romantic. And if I know you, and I totally do, so, I know you love romance. What’s stopping you two?”
“Wow. This is not what I thought we’d be talking about tonight.” Blaine smiled, shaking his head, his laugh light in his throat as he listened to Sam talk about what he thought the cycle of life should be for him. He tried not to visibly cringe at the name Sam David. But, he had to admit the rest of what Sam was saying sounded nice and admitting that to himself hurt a little. He hesitated, not sure how to approach this. Blaine’s life with Sebastian was all about the now. Sure they planned ahead like normal people but, who knew what would happen in a month, two months or two years from now. His intuition told him him and Sebastian were safe from the Council and Order for the time being but, for how long? Not long enough for Blaine to let himself really want either of these things too much anyway. Sometimes planning for the far future just hurt so he usually tried to avoid it.
“It’s just that when Seb and I first met he told me he couldn’t see himself getting married or having children. And I don’t know, I’m not even sure that’s what I really want. I mean, maybe, but, I’m just happy being with him now, you know?” He bit his lip, in thought, before giving his friend a smile. “Besides, I don’t have to marry him to love him like I do.”
And it was all true. Seb did tell him when they were first dating that he wasn’t into either thing. But, Blaine had been with him going on two years now and he could sense a change. Maybe Sebastian wasn’t ready to admit any of that to even himself. But, if Blaine asked him to marry him in a year, something in his heart told him that Seb would say yes. That it would please him. He wasn’t sure about the whole children thing. It was something Blaine didn’t even know that he might want until he met Sebastian and they had gotten the chance to grow together. But now he could almost picture their life ten years down the road and sometimes it involved little feet and big, candy sticky grins. But, the vision always went hazy and Blaine would always lose the fantasy before he could take it too far. He meant what he said to Sam though. He didn’t need to marry or have children to love Sebastian. He’d be happy and content to get to just be with him and love the rest of his life.
Sam’s confused and unsure face at his explanation upset him a little. Sam wasn’t stupid. He knew when Blaine wasn’t being entirely honest. This would be so much easier if Blaine could really talk to Sam. Really tell him why he didn’t know if he and Sebastian could have those things. As long as they’d been friends, he’d struggled with this, now, it was worse than ever. A part of him thought Sam might actually know, his best friend was smart like that. He thought differently than most people, his busy, labyrinth brain would slowly work things out and it wouldn’t surprise Blaine a bit if he kinda knew. Sam said weird things sometimes. Comparing him to this comic book character or that. And he used to catch Sam studying him like he was waiting for him to do something magical. But, Blaine couldn’t tell him and Sam wasn’t offering up any information if he did suspect anything so he kept on their friendship like he always did.
“Oh, by the way.” Blaine perked up, attempting to use Sam and David’s friendly rival to appease his friend. “It’s very big of you to share the name of an imaginary Smythe-Anderson baby with David. I know how big the unnecessary competition with you and him is.” He laughed as Sam launched into a whole tirade on why he was the better friend. (He’d been around longer and through more with Blaine. Duh.)
An hour later they had to hang up the Skype session for the time being and Sam still hadn’t decided when he’d be coming back to America. The only take away from the whole conversation was that Sam would make the best Best Man and David would have to be the Ring Bearer in this imaginary wedding that Sam had concocted out of thin air. Sebastian wasn’t close to admitting that he might want to get married one day, and neither was Blaine but he couldn’t help but smile to himself, wondering if Blaine Devon Smythe-Anderson was too much of a mouthful while ignoring the pointed look Freya was giving him as he got ready for a night with his boyfriend and the hot topic of his whole Skype session. He tried to ignore the little nagging feeling that he shouldn’t even entertain the thought because it would only lead to pain. It pulsed through him almost as if mocking him, telling him the High Witch Council wouldn’t let them go that far. But, he pushed it down because he was happy and in love and had gotten to talk to and see his best friend for hours and they couldn't take away how he felt. At least not tonight.

Title: I’ll Be Home for Gyftmas
Rating: G
Happy Gyftmas, @fleeting-phantasm! Your prompt was:
Let's see... classic Papyrus and Undyne's friendship brings me all sorts of joy. I'll love just about anything featuring them being the coolest of buds. Preferably pacifist happy times. I'm also a huge fan of the gentlemen monsters like Grillby and dapper!Gaster--could be friends, could be shipped, could be only one character or the other.
I tried to combine these ideas, so this story is about Papyrus and Undyne working together to figure out what Papyrus should get for his dad Gaster for Gyftmas. They run into him and Grillby out on a date. I hope this is something like what you were looking for!
Also, thank you to @undertalesecretsanta for putting all this together!
--
Multicolored lights glittered on the town's enormous Gyftmas tree. Some traditions held on, even with monsters scattered all over the surface. If there was monster from Snowdin around, when the weather turned cold, a tree would appear overnight in the center of town.
Papyrus tiptoed towards the tree. His boots crushed loudly in the snow, but he couldn't see anyone around, so the noise didn't matter. He drew a few boxes out of his inventory and set them in exactly the correct and most aesthetically pleasing spots beneath the boughs.
That done, he searched for boxes with his own name on it. "NYEH-HEH," he whispered, whenever he spotted one.
He registered a distant rumble, almost like an earthquake. Undyne must be getting close! Papyrus hurried back to the house to make sure it was still neat. Sans was home and it had been five minutes since Papyrus had left, so he could not be entirely sure.
The rumble turned into the familiar sound of an engine. He hadn't made it to the house yet when he heard his name shouted, with rapidly increasing volume.
"UNDYNE!" He spun around in the driveway.
The car screeched off the road and was headed straight towards him. Papyrus jumped over it. Breaks squealed behind him and he could smell burning rubber. Undyne kicked her car door open and rolled out onto the gravel driveway.
"I AM NOT 100% CERTAIN THAT WAS SAFE!" Papyrus said.
"I know! Cool, right?" She hopped to her feet. The car rolled to a stop. "You know what ELSE is cool?"
"HMMM...OH! IT MUST BE ME! PAPYRUS!" He took out a pair of sunglasses and put them on. Perfect!
"Yeah," she agreed. "But, also -" Undyne grinned, wide. "SNOW WRESTLING!"
"THAT ISN'T - AUGH!" Undyne plowed into him at full speed. His face met snow. "I LOVE YOU TOO, UNDYNE," he said, his voice muffled.
"Gross!" She laughed. "I missed you too, though. I guess."
"REALLY? OF COURSE YOU MISSED THE GREAT PAPYRUS! EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE A WIFE AND A NEW JOB TO KEEP YOU BUSY, OF COURSE YOU FOUND YOURSELF TRAGICALLY BEREFT WITHOUT MY CONSTANT PRESENCE." Tears started to well up in his eye sockets. He hadn't been worried. Of course not! No one could ever forget about him.
"Yup. Alphys hates noogies." Undyne scoffed.
"I REALLY HATE THEM TOO."
"Let's get inside before I freeze my scales off!" She yanked him back to his feet. "And then you can tell me all about...whatever your problem is!"
"OH, WELL. THAT WASN'T...SOMETHING YOU NEEDED TO DRIVE ALL THE WAY DOWN HERE TO HELP WITH. THOUGH OF COURSE I APPRECIATE THE SENTIMENT!"
She whacked him on his back. "Of course I did! Come on!" She picked him back up off the ground and they went inside.
Sans was sitting at the kitchen table, eating cereal out of the box. "hey."
"Look who's up early!" Undyne said. "And it's only seven PM!"
"SANS, I DUSTED THE KITCHEN TEN MINUTES AGO, AND NOW THERE ARE CEREAL CRUMBS ON THE TABLE?"
"whoops. jeez. a guy can tell when he isn't wanted." Sans wiped away an imaginary tear. "guess i'll just go." He stayed where he was and dug further into the box. "why'd she come over? it seems kinda...fishy, heh, so close to the holidays."
"Papyrus is in trouble!"
"IT IS NOT QUITE...THAT DRAMATIC."
Sans stopped chewing. "man, what's up? you can tell us." He offered the box of cereal.
"NO THANK YOU. AND. I...ALREADY DISCUSSED THIS WITH YOU, SANS. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO GET OUR FATHER FOR GYFTMAS!"
"i gave you a million suggestions, though."
"YOU GAVE ME ONE AND IT WAS A JOKE! THIS IS HIS FIRST HOLIDAY BACK FROM THE COLD EMPTY VOID, AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE IT IS SPECIAL! IN THE WAY THAT ONLY THE GREAT PAPYRUS CAN!" Remembering to ask for help when he needed it was how he always managed to stay on top.
"right."
"What's your weird dad like to do?" Undyne asked.
"SPEND TIME WITH ME, PAPYRUS! AND ALSO SANS. RIGHT NOW HE IS OUT WITH HIS...DOT DOT DOT...FRIEND. SO HE ALSO ENJOYS THE COMPANY OF HIS ELLIPSIS FRIEND."
"also hangs out with his, uh, non italicized pals," Sans said. "does more of that than talking about stuff he wants to buy. eh, just get him like...a number one dad hat. he'll be over the moon."
"BUT WHAT IF HE AND GRILLBY GET MARRIED AND I SUDDENLY HAVE TWO FATHERS? I DON'T WANT TO CAUSE A RIFT BETWEEN THEM SO EARLY IN THEIR MARRIAGE! I WILL LOVE THEM BOTH EQUALLY!"
"it's a pickle, i guess."
"A REAL CONUNDRUM! A PUZZLE BEFITTING EVEN THE GREAT - " Papyrus broke off as he watched Sans draw a jar of pickles from his hoodie. He sighed. "UNDYNE, YOU HAVE ALREADY SUCCESSFULLY FINISHED GYFTMAS SHOPPING, SO I AM DESPERATELY TURNING TO YOU AND AWAY FROM MY BROTHER IN MY HOUR OF NEED!"
"I don't blame you!" Undyne said, laughing. "Let's get the hell out of here." She accepted a pickle and skewered it on her fangs while Papyrus rushed off to grab his shopping bag, purse, and an enormous folder filled with holiday coupons. "SHOTGUN!" she yelled when he got back. "I'm sick of driving!"
"you guys better hurry up," Sans said. "gyftmas is barely a month away. never expected you to be such a lazybones, bro."
Papyrus slammed the door on the way out. A minute later he peeked back in and said he probably wouldn't be back in time for dinner and that Sans should remember to eat something healthy.
--
In a small, secluded booth in the back of an aging human bar, the air was hot and still. The only sound was Grillby's gentle crackling. The noise of him had seemed so loud when Gaster first escaped the void, but now it was just background noise, like the rumble of cars driving by outside or the quiet conversations in the other parts of the bar.
Grillby reached across the table and touched the cool white bone of Gaster's hand. Gaster smiled, uneven, and leaned in closer.
"........." Grillby asked him if he needed to get home soon.
Gaster shook his head. He took back his hand so he could sign. "[But maybe I should.]"
He could tell Grillby was disappointed from the way his flames seemed to die down slightly, even though he had to be at work himself in a few hours.
"[Who cares if I should?]" he decided.
The early evening was clear, so they decided to take a walk down the main street. The local human winter holiday was near the same time as Gyftmas and the stores were decorated. They weren't the only people out window shopping. Gaster ignored the humans staring at him and Grillby when they went into a men's clothing store.
He'd spent so long away from anything bright or colorful, he found himself charmed by a display of - honestly - quite ugly Christmas ties. Grillby looked from him to the ties and just shook his head.
"[They Suit You.]"
"......no."
There was one with an entire inside scene on it. A beautifully decorated Gyftmas tree stood next to a roaring hearth. Two dogs slept in front of the fire. All on one tie. Gaster pointed to that one.
".........no."
"[It's You.]"
"...don't insult me."
Gaster cackled. He would hate to see Grillby actually wear it, but thinking about how he'd react if he opened a box on Gyftmas Day and found the tie on it was putting him in a good mood.
Grillby was looking at him like he knew exactly what he was thinking, and didn't approve.
A loud gasp behind them startled them. Grillby's flames leapt up towards the ceiling and Gaster felt himself sink into a coat rack in an automatic impulse to hide.
"WHAT AN AMAZING COINCIDENCE!" Gaster couldn't see him, but he recognized Papyrus' voice.
Embarrassed, Gaster emerged from his hiding place. They'd lucked out this time and Grillby hadn't set off the sprinkler system.
"Kind of ironic actually!" Undyne was grinning.
"NO I WOULD NOT SAY IT IS IRONIC AT ALL," Papyrus said, giving her a sharp look.
"OH! Right, yeah. Just, a standard, every day coincidence."
"ABSOLUTELY MUNDANE!"
"I'm about to fall asleep thinking about how boring a surprise this was, to run into these guys, here, right now!"
Grillby nodded at Papyrus, then at Undyne, and then sunk back. Gaster wasn't sure how to convince him that Papyrus didn't have any problem with them dating, and that Sans was just pretending to disapprove to con Grillby out of free burgers.
"I SHOULD HAVE REALIZED YOU WERE HERE WHEN I CAME IN THE BUILDING AND IT SMELLED SUSPICIOUSLY OF GREASE!" Papyrus sounded cheerful, but no wonder Grillby didn't believe him.
"We should get the hell out of here and get something to eat," Undyne said. "You're right. That smell is making me hungry!" She aimed her toothy smile at Grillby. "I want to fill a bathtub with the greasy cheese you use on your fries and just SWIM in it!"
Papyrus shuddered. "SUDDENLY MY APPETITE HAS DISAPPEARED ENTIRELY."
"[Still, as your Father, I am telling you to get something to eat.]" Gaster said. "[You are almost SKIN AND BONES.]"
Papyrus sighed. "THIS IS THE LIFE I HAVE TO LIVE NOW, UNDYNE."
She patted him on the arm.
"I CAN BARELY STOMACH IT!" He waved over the open spot between his shirt and his ripped holiday daisy dukes. "NYEH HEH HEH!"
Gaster cackled along with him.
"Quit messing around! I need to rip into something before I pass out! And we have work to do," Undyne said. "C'mon!" She grabbed Papyrus by the arm and started to pull him away.
Grillby waved goodbye. Gaster looked at him and shrugged.
"...gyftmas shopping?" Grillby guessed.
"[Oh. That makes sense.]"
Grillby spotted a display of holiday vests with muted colors and designs compared to the ties. He hurried over, visibly excited.
Gaster was too caught up in the excitement of browsing menswear to notice the odd rattling noise that followed the two of them as they walked throughout the store.
--
Undyne pulled Papyrus out of hearing range and then yanked him down onto the floor behind a shoulder-high slacks display. She knelt next to him. "This is PERFECT."
"THERE ARE NUMEROUS RESTAURANTS ON MAIN STREET THAT HAVE HEALTHY AND CALCIUM-RICH MEAL CHOICES," Papyrus said, worried. He didn't know why they were on the floor, but he assumed Undyne had a reason. She always did, even if her reasons were not, well, always good reasons. Or, to be more diplomatic, they were not always the quality of reason that Papyrus would expect from someone who used to be head of the royal guard. That didn't mean he wasn't going to go along with whatever she was planning, however.
"Shhh, shut up, we aren't eating yet," Undyne said. "And we have to quit talking about it before I really do get hungry!"
"THIS MUST BE VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO BE SO RUDE."
"Sorry! But, it is! I hatched a plan while we were talking to your old man - like, a really DEVIOUS and CALCULATING one! I can't wait to tell Alphys about it - she's always getting into those kinds of characters and slapping posters of their faces on our bedroom wall."
"I SEE!" Papyrus sat up. "I KNEW I COULD COUNT ON YOU, UNDYNE!"
"I wasn't going to let my friend down!" She rubbed her knuckles on the top of his skull. "See, we're going to follow them - and stay really really quiet - and watch what stuff your dad looks interested in! It's perfect, and it's guaranteed that whatever you get him will be a surprise AND he'll want it!"
"THAT PLAN IS AMAZING!" Papyrus said, clasping his gyftmas-tree shaped gloves together. "IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE PLAN I WAS CONSIDERING! AND THEN YOU SAID YOU WERE HUNGRY, SO I THOUGHT WE WERE NOT GOING TO DO IT! BUT THEN IT JUST TURNED OUT THAT YOU WERE BEING EXTRA DEVIOUS AND TRICKING EVEN ME INTO THINKING IT WAS NOT GOING TO BE THE PLAN!"
"Uh, right!" Undyne grinned. "Step one is convincing them we left!"
"CHECK!"
"Step two is, uh...tracking them down in the store without letting them know we're there!"
"HM...THAT WILL BE OF CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTY. LIKE UNTWISTING NOODLES WITHOUT BREAKING A SINGLE STRAND, WE MUST TAKE GREAT CARE AT EVERY STEP. EVEN ONE OVERLY-LOUD WORD WILL BETRAY US! AND OUR MISSION!"
"Yeah! But we can definitely do it!"
"OF COURSE! FOR I AM THE GREAT PAPYRUS! AND YOU ARE...THE NEARLY AS GREAT FRIEND OF PAPYRUS!"
She leaned down. "Ok." Undyne spoke in a low whisper. "Let's quit messing around, and get this over with so we can go out and get some burgers."
"OR SOME - " Papyrus broke off and started again, in a whisper. "OR SOMETHING HEALTHY AND NOT DISGUSTING." His whisper was the same volume as his regular way of speaking, but he hissed while he spoke.
"Uh...why don't we practice hand signals! And not say anything once we've started." Undyne snuck out from behind the slacks display and waved for Papyrus to follow.
Oh! A hand signal! Papyrus hurried after her, still partially crouched. A hamster monster wearing a store badge hovered by the display, uneasily watching them.
"SHH," Papyrus said. "YOU DID NOT SEE OR HEAR US."
The monster nodded, slowly. He started folding pants.
--
Grillby could tell they were being followed. How could anyone miss it? He turned and gave his incompetent tail a long look, but they seemed to decide that he was looking over their heads.
Gaster was too intent on deciding between three different hats, and didn't seem to notice.
"......Gaster."
"[SHHHH. NOT NOW.]"
Fine. Grillby was more annoyed at Gaster shushing him than he was at being followed. He decided to keep it to himself.
"[I think this one suits you,]" Gaster said. He took a white panama hat off the display and set it on Grillby's burning head.
"...I don't like hats." The irritation faded away, now that he knew Gaster was looking at something for him. He removed it and set it back. He wasn't going to burn it, but the people working there were uneasy about him trying things on. He didn't want to make their day more difficult than it had to be during the holiday season.
"[A shame.]"
Grillby glanced at Papyrus, who was peering out from inside a circular rack of coats. "...do you like any of them for yourself?"
Gaster shook his head, and then seemed to reconsider. He tried on a few more.
Grillby waited until Gaster was staring at himself in the mirror, and then he turned towards Papyrus and pointed at the hat on Gaster's head. He gave a single stoic nod.
He thought that pointing out a gift would get Papyrus to leave him and Gaster alone. He gave up on that idea after half an hour. He caught a glimpse of some paper in Papyrus' hand.
"[Are you bored?]" Gaster signed. "[Usually you enjoy this.]"
"......I feel like we're being watched."
Gaster gave him as serious a look as his odd features could manage. He touched Grillby on the arm. "[Do not let the humans get to you.]"
Grillby sighed. "......I won't."
"[But let's continue this when there is no crowd.]"
He nodded.
"[I wonder where my son went to eat?]" Gaster took out his phone and started to call.
For a second, Grillby heard a ringtone, and then the sound was gone. Grillby looked up and thought he saw something small flying through the air towards the back of the store.
"[No answer.]"
"...if they went, they'd be done by now."
"[True. But he always answers in two rings.]" Gaster shook his head. "[Except when his battery dies.]"
"...it's normal to worry, but...I'm sure he is fine."
Gaster gave him a crooked smile and nodded.
A rack of clothes tipped over and Papyrus burst out of the mess. "MY APOLOGIES FOR MISSING YOUR CALL, FATHER! I THINK UNDYNE...DROPPED MY PHONE SOMEPLACE IN THIS STORE! ...DID YOU SEE IT?"
"[How did you -]"
"I......HEARD YOU TALKING AS I WALKED BY! THIS STORY SURE IS BELIEVABLE...IS WHAT YOU ARE THINKING RIGHT NOW!"
"I believe it!" Undyne said, popping out of the clothes on the floor. "Hey, why don't you call his phone again, so we can see if we can track the ring tone!"
"BRILLIANT IDEA, UNDYNE!"
Gaster shrugged. "[Let us all get something to eat after we find it.]"
"Great! I could still eat like a thousand burgers," Undyne said.
Grillby covered his face with his hands. "...yes. Let's just...leave."
"[Grillby is shy around these humans,]" Gaster explained.
"I WAS NOT AWARE THAT GRILLBY WAS SHY! IT MUST BE DIFFICULT TO FULFILL SUCH A SOCIAL ROLE, AS A BARTENDER! GRILLBY, I HAVE NEWFOUND RESPECT FOR YOU AND I AM HAPPY YOU ARE TRYING SO HARD TO OVERCOME YOUR LIMITATIONS."
"...thank you." Grillby was not used to being called "shy." "...sometimes people are difficult." That was true, at least.
"WHAT WAS THAT?"
"[Grillby thanked you.]"
"IT WAS THE VERY LEAST I COULD DO, BUT I AM AWARE THAT IT WAS STILL A LOT. SINCE EVERYTHING I DO IS TINGED WITH GREATNESS."
They all went and got burgers over Papyrus' loud objections. Papyrus ordered a salad and a milkshake and complained about the overpowering grease smell.
After Undyne polished off her weight in hamburgers and cheese fries, she tossed some money on the table. "I still have a billion errands to run! Thanks for the food, though."
Papyrus looked confused. "I THOUGHT WE WERE--"
Undyne elbowed his head.
"--AH, YES! I REMEMBER NOW. THANK YOU FOR...KNOCKING MY MEMORY LOOSE FOR ME, UNDYNE." He narrowed his eye sockets. "AND WE SHOULD...STOP INTERRUPTING YOUR DATE! THERE ARE MANY STEPS FROM FRIEND TO BOYFRIEND TO BECOMING THE STEP FATHER OF THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AND I WOULD NOT WANT TO DELAY IT EVEN FOR A MINUTE."
"Oh my god, Papyrus, let's just go!"
"THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I'M SUGGESTING!"
Grillby watched them run out of the building. Through the large pane glass window, he saw them hurry right back into the store they'd just left. He looked back at Gaster, and noticed he was obliviously fussing with his phone.
"......I'm tired," Grillby said. He still had a full night of work ahead of him.
"[Let me take you back home.]"
Grillby nodded. He liked when they walked together, and he could make sure Gaster didn't get too cold. He kept his arm over Gaster's shoulders.
--
Gaster was singing.
It was more like humming, with a strange high staticy buzz that almost seemed to form words when Undyne concentrated. He signed along with his humming.
"[OH. THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL.]"
Grillby was next to him in a neat green sweater. Someone (Sans) had stuck several bows to his back, and he hadn't noticed. There was also one stuck to the side of his glasses that he had noticed, but he had left it where it was.
"[BUT THE FIRE IS SO DELIGHTFUL.]"
Grillby tinged blue under his glasses. He playfully pushed Gaster away.
Papyrus kicked open the kitchen door and burst in, carrying an enormous fruit cake on a silver platter. "AND SINCE THERE'S NO PLACE TO GO," He sang.
Sans, dozing on the couch next to Undyne, mumbled along with the last line. "let it snow."
"LET IT SNOW!"
"[LET IT SNOW.]
That was freaking adorable. Undyne wanted to punch the couch cushions into fluff. Gaster leaned towards Grillby and blinked at him like he was trying to bat his non-existent eyelashes. Grillby turned even more blue and gave him a very quick smooch.
"Alphys!" Undyne turned away from boring Sans towards the love of her life, on her other side.
Alphys was in the middle of chugging a mug full of alcoholic cider. She coughed and said, "Uh...Undyne! Y-yes?"
"This place is so FULL of the holiday spirit, it feels like it's going to EXPLODE with it any minute now! We have to open presents before it's too late!"
Alphys laughed. "It's a real emergency!"
"I need you to see what I got you!" Undyne sighed. Toriel was still in the kitchen with Frisk.
"W-well...how about we give each other...a tiny present beforehand? To, uh, release some of the pressure? I can go first."
"WHAT YOU ARE DISCUSSING SOUNDS VERY ILLEGAL," Papyrus commented, but he didn't appear to be particularly bothered.
"Lay it on me!" Undyne said. She held out her hand, assuming Alphys had whatever small gift it was in her inventory.
"Uh...ok. I'll...just..." She turned red and took Undyne's hand. Alphys' glasses fogged up in embarrassment as she gave Undyne's fingers a quick smooch.
"HEY!" Undyne grinned. "No fair giving me the best present first! And I got you the same thing, too, which TOTALLY ruins the surprise!"
They kept each other distracted until it was time to open their other, easier to wrap presents.
This was Gaster's first Gyftmas since his return, so Undyne wasn't surprised when present opening got slogged down during his turn. She settled in.
"your turn, bro," Sans said, after Gaster had opened his poorly wrapped gag gift.
"I WILL RETURN SHORTLY!" Papyrus fled the room and Undyne jumped up to help.
He had ten different boxes, and nothing was breakable, but she didn't want him flinging them around the house after she'd helped him pick them out. They ran back and dumped the whole load of them onto Gaster's lap. His lap wasn't large enough to hold them, so a couple rolled over to Grillby.
"man, don't sell yourself short," Sans said. "carrying all those was a tall order."
"YES I SUPPOSE I DID RETURN TALL-Y," Papyrus allowed.
"[What is all this?]" Gaster asked. He opened the first box he put his hands on and took out a soft black turtleneck. Papyrus had written "NUMBER ONE GASTER" in glittering fabric paint on it, instead of the preferable but risky "NUMBER ONE DAD." "[Oh. That is very sweet. Thank you.]"
The next box had the dapper looking hat they had watched him seriously consider. Papyrus had written "COOL DAD" on this one. One by one, Gaster removed each of the items of clothing from their wrapping, and held them up to show off the slogans Papyrus had painted on. Undyne couldn't tell from Gaster's face how he felt about them.
He finally noticed the card, lost in all the boxes, taped to some now loose wrapping paper. Gaster opened it up and seemed to read over it a few times before setting it down. Black globular tears started to pour out of his eye sockets and Grillby shuffled away and held out a handkerchief to him at a safe distance. "[THANK YOU, SON.]" He sniffed and blew into the handkerchief.
They passed the card around, but Undyne didn't have to read it. She'd sat by while Papyrus paced around trying to figure out the correct wording, and she'd giving him her reassurances that he was saying the right thing.
FATHER,
I CANNOT IMAGINE A BETTER PRESENT FOR MYSELF THAN HAVING YOU WITH US FOR GYFTMAS THIS YEAR. I HOPE ALL THESE GIFTS ARE ENOUGH TO SHOW MY GRATITUDE.
PAPYRUS
Toriel opened her presents next, to give Gaster a little time to settle down, and Grillby shifted back over to sit right next to him. He said something, quiet, and Gaster rested his head on Grillby's shoulder.
Undyne watched Grillby quietly set a box in Gaster's hand, and Gaster took out his own gift and handed it to Grillby. Undyne looked away and gave them a moment of privacy to exchange their gifts.
-
The adults had all had a little too much cider by the time the last gift was opened and properly cooed over. Undyne crumpled up the wrapping paper into one huge ball and left to slam dunk it into the outside garbage.
Papyrus thought she was taking a little too long. He found her in the kitchen with a mouth stuffed full of Toriel's famous snail puffs that she too-rapidly swallowed when Papyrus opened the door.
"Hey!" she said, voice raspy, tears leaking out the corner of her eye.
"GYFTMAS IS A VERY EMOTIONAL HOLIDAY FOR EVERYONE," Papyrus said.
"Y-yeah!" Undyne said, coughing. "Man, I don't know what it is with booze, but I want to eat half the food in this house, and right now!"
Papyrus didn't like to hear that anyone was hungry around him, so he let her have some of the chips from one of the bags Sans always seemed to open but was always too lazy to finish. This way, she wouldn't be eating food that was meant for later. No one wanted to see Toriel in a bad mood.
"UNDYNE. I WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR COMING BY SO QUICKLY TO HELP ME WHEN I NEEDED IT THE MOST," Papyrus said. "I THINK IT MUST HAVE BEEN FATE, BECAUSE I DOUBT ANY OTHER TIME WE WOULD HAVE RUN INTO THEM."
"I mean, they go into that exact store all the time. That's why you thought you'd find something he liked there."
"YES! THE TIDES OF FATE WERE IN OUR FAVOR, AND IT WAS WITH YOUR AID THAT I WAS ABLE TO MAKE THIS THE BEST GYFTMAS EVER. IN QUITE LIKELY THE ENTIRE WORLD. FOR ANYONE."
"Yeah, it was really great. Man, Papyrus, you've been a really good friend, you know?" She crumpled up the chip bag and tossed it. It landed in the trash can without hitting the sides. "And now I'm getting emotional! What the hell! It's gotta be the booze! What did she put in this stuff?"
"YOU ARE FEELING EMOTIONAL BECAUSE YOU RIGHTFULLY LOVE ME VERY MUCH," Papyrus said. "IT'S OKAY! LET IT ALL OUT!" He gave her a hug.
She sniffed, just once, and then hugged him back so hard he felt something crack. "Of course I love you, you gangly nerd!"
"OH NO! NOW THERE IS SOMETHING IN MY EYE SOCKETS!"
"Like you said! Let it all out!"
Papyrus cried on her shoulder and loudly blew his nose hole on the wad of paper towels she handed to him. "I NEVER IMAGINED I WOULD HAVE SO MANY GOOD FRIENDS. WELL. I MEAN, I IMAGINED, OF COURSE, BUT...IT IS BETTER THAN I IMAGINED! AND YOU ARE THE BEST FRIEND OF THEM ALL. THE GREATEST AMONGST THOSE WHO ARE GREAT ENOUGH TO BE CONSIDERED A LIFELONG COMPANION OF SOMEONE SUCH AS ME."
"Wow, Papyrus." She laughed. "You sap! Let's get back to the party before we start to get weird about it."
"YOU'RE THE FETTUCCINE TO MY ALFREDO," Papyrus said.
"Yeah, that's it. I'll spaghetti your bolognese if we don't get back to the party."
"I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. BUT IT SOUNDS NICE!"
"Well, it sure isn't!"
There was a half-tipsy cheer when the two of them returned to the crowded living room.

(/ω\)゚.+(〃ノωノ)゚.+°50 More Interesting Questions
Tagged by the lovely @incorrectmidc, @theempresskaizer, and @spyrothetimelord~! ♡♡♡ Thanks!! :D
Rules: fill this out and tag at least one person you’d like to know more about! Or just fill it out! Or don’t! Answer only some of them! Make up your own questions! “What kind of requirement is that”, you ask? A reasonable one! Who am I to tell you what to do? Anything goes!
1. What kind of food can't you stand? Spicy food, food that has a really strong milk-taste, and any seafood or meat that are uncooked or not fully cooked.
2. If you could choose one minor inconvenience to never have to deal with again, what would you pick? Never having to check if there are any toilet paper left in the roll holder again. My sis likes to use it all up and freaking leave the cardboard tube on top of the tank lid when there are new ones literally three feet away ._.
3. Have you got any useless talents? Um I can use chopsticks with my left hand but it's useless since I usually use my right hand anyway lol
4. If you could be really really good at one thing, what would it be? Communication
5. Name a few people you think are extremely good-looking I think a lot of people are very good-looking tho... I really don't know where to start ^^;
6. What was your favorite way to pass the time as a kid? Reading books from libraries.
7. What is something you’re proud of? My dedication once I've put my mind to it.
8. What’s one character flaw in people that you just can’t tolerate? Assuming things and arrogantly believe they are right (whether they are right or not, it's the attitude that irks me the most).
9. Do you consider yourself to be more of a leader or a follower? I'm more of a follower. But if the leader is not cooperative, motivated and/or decisive enough, I'd do a bit of nudging to get the team project in the right direction.
10. What kind of student are/were you? The average kind that does average work and gets average grades.
11. Butterfly effect question! Has there ever been a seemingly minor decision you’ve made (at the time) that ended up having a profound influence on your life? Yes.
12. Name your most irrational fear/aversion High heights, like really high ones. It's not so much the height but the fear of falling that gets to me.
13. Are there any fictional characters you find especially relatable? Yep~
14. If you drink, what kind of drunk are you? Alternatively, what sort of person are you at parties? I've never drunk alcohol before lololol; it's a personal choice rather than a legal limitation. I'm the sort that sits in a corner and watches chaos unfold at parties :D
15. Do you fall in love easily? Or does it usually take a long time for you to trust someone? Not really, it's more like a premonition of love before I fall hard. And yes, it takes a very, very long time for me to trust anyone.
16. Would you rather have one close friend or 100 casual friends? I'd rather have one close friend than have a hundred casual ones.
17. Do you consider yourself to be more of a slob or a neat-freak? Uh, sorta both? I do organise my stuff neatly, having a place for every item to find them more easily. But I also have a bad habit of hoarding, which leads to a bit of mess in a corner of my room to clear up every once in a while ^^;
18. Describe a place (imaginary or real) that you would find incredibly cozy On my bed, furled beneath the blanket and hugging my pillows. Alternatively, sitting all curled up on my comfy mesh chair and having a towel or hoodie draped over my shoulders and legs like I’m doing now. I can get cosy anywhere that I feel safe at/with tho.
19. Do you have kids? If not, do you want them someday? No, and I don't see myself married anytime soon, much less have kids.

22. Name one thing that you think is tragically underrated Manga series that are refreshingly original and good and has so much potential and tragically axed or at risk of it :'c (im5eversaltyaboutClassi9 TnT)
23. If you had to be glued to a person for a month, real or fictional (who you have never met), who would you choose? Eh no way, I prefer my privacy and being alone, so "noone" it is for me.
24. What’s something you’d like the chance to do someday? Visit other countries, to see and experience more of the world.
25. Do you typically speak your mind when you have a controversial opinion? Or do generally prefer to not rock the boat? I prefer not to rock the boat. It's only when I feel it's necessary that I speak up.
26. What’s the dumbest fad you’ve been caught up in? I don't know if it's a fad, but I really regret playing Clash Royale :/
27. What’s something you thought was cool as a kid/adolescent, but now cringe at yourself for? I thought it was cool to have an attitude when I was a kid. Thinking about it now, it's just embarrassing.

29. Is there a particular kind of item people always tend to give you as gifts? (For instance, people always get you things with ducks on them because you like ducks, etc.) Not really.

33. Do you mind being the center of attention, or do you prefer the spotlight to be on someone else? Spotlight on someone else pls
34. Favorite holiday? New year, for the festive end-of-year mood if nothing else.
35. Are you a more go-with-the-flow type of person, or do you need to have things planned meticulously? I'm a go-with-the-flow type of person but I NEED to have things planned out to get them done lol
36. Is there something you loved so much you wish you could forget it and experience it all over again? (A tv show, book, series–anything.) Nah, while nothing compares to that first experience, neither does the second or third rerun through nostalgia and familiar moments compare to anything else either. There's usually something new I'd discover in rereads too, whether it's something I missed the first time or how my thoughts have changed about certain moments or places.
37. What hobbies do you have? Reading, drawing, playing video games, writing, watching anime, looking at the sky, collecting stamps and old coins & foreign dollar notes and owl motifs, surfing the internet, archiving, and various other activities that hold my attention every once in a while (like folding origami, baking, voluntary work, DIY projects, etcetra).
38. If you could have a superpower, but it was only mildly useful, what ability would you want to have? Uhhh not having to trim my nails and toenails? idk, what exactly constitutes as a 'mildly useful' superpower~~??

(Neither tattoo can be removed or concealed with makeup, and the ugly tattoo will deeply offend anyone who sees it.) I'd rather have neither but that's not an answer is it? I'd rather have the ugly tattoo then, at least it can be hidden or removed by laser.
48. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist? I expect the worst and believe in the best, that every challenge has its share of difficulties and opportunities. I guess I'm something of an optimist who can be pessimistic, and vice-versa.
49. What would be the most flattering compliment someone could give you? That I've made a positive influence in their life.
50. Something you feel people often misunderstand about you That I think I'm better or find them uninteresting or something awful when I just like to stay quiet and do a lot of thinking. They're right about me being weird tho ^^

1. Why I decided to keep a travel blog
20 September, 2019
안녕하세요! Welcome to blog page and, more specifically, welcome to my first post! You’re either here because you know me in person or because you know me form twitter or you just randomly found this blog which is probably the coolest way so welcome!! Anyways, let me first introduce myself!! My name is Bregje, I am a 21-year-old student from a small village in the south of the Netherlands. Starting Spring 2020, I will be spending a semester abroad at a South Korean university. As I’m writing this I’m still in the application phase and have yet to be selected into a university (which is a lot more nerve wrecking than I thought it would be). I know you might think it’s perhaps too early to start writing and honestly it might be but there’s not really a different way to deal with my excitedness right now. And it makes sense too because the main reason for creating this blog is to document the entire process of going abroad and I think the preparations just as well play an important role in this process. I’m either way suuuuper excited to start sharing my experiences with you.
Disclaimer: I am not a writer!! I mean I write and I have whole conversations I’ve imagined while I’m in the shower or in bed or supposed to be paying attention to my classes. For my current internship I even am writing blog posts and I have written research articles for university activities. But I am not a creative writer. I once took one (1) creative writing seminar in my English course in which the student teacher told me I should “just describe the little pictures in my head” to which my immediate response was “what” but what I really meant was yeah but how do I make it good?
I constantly go through phases of wanting to reinvent myself. Not in the slight I want to be a better person or start eating breakfast every morning, but in the I’m going to actually become a morning person, lose all the weight I gained in summer break, become the human incarnation of Hera (what a mood), be mysterious/cool/adorable/intelligent/snarky, and either become a master artist, singer, etc. Point is, I am none of those things and to be completely frank I don’t think I’ll ever be. I’m not sure I even want to be. But since I also have no idea what I do want and I’m in a constant state of existential crisis I look up ways to do these things I say I want to do but never start.
Ever since bullet journals became a thing I started one but that didn’t really work out (as probably is the case for 90% of people who start bullet journaling). I figured I might take up normal journaling because it’s supposed to be calming and helpful and blah blah. Also, journals are gorgeous and again it’s my dream to suddenly become very good at different styles of art and making things esthetically pleasing (I’m pointing at all of my university friends who know how passionate I am about this). Summer 2018 I actually invested in one of those fancy Leuchtturm1917 journals you see all over journaling-Tumblr and I told myself that I would write in it every day starting when my second year of my studies began. Surprisingly I kept my word and did this for a good nine months. But you know, the content got quite boring soon as you probably can imagine me writing mostly about school. My friends were always asking me if they could read in it but I figured it was for the sole reason of it looking so neat and pretty (so at least one of my goals was actually achieved). The thing is, when I wrote I simultaneously imagined myself as this future Anne Frank and imagined everything I’m writing as if it were the narration of some 2000s era rom-com. I know I was just writing for me but I really got sick of it and, also, yes, I am indeed that cringey. I’ve tried to start a journal multiple times for other purposes, mainly to document my Korean learning. But what keeps happening is, I buy myself a nice notebook and I always write a single entry and then never am sure how to continue or I’ll get bored.
The thing is, I really do think it’s valuable to write down my experiences. It’d be nice to have something to remember even if it isn’t as esthetically gorgeous as my imaginary travel journal that is somehow filled with impeccable drawings of buildings and animals and people. If anyone is wondering, I did indeed succumb to my urge to buy yet another notebook to chase this weird obsession with being good at doodling and now have a blank sketchbook at my disposal. Best 4 (it was 5) euros I’ve spent at Flying Tiger. The thing about writing in a journal is that it requires writing. And I’m the slowest writer in the world (I NEED my handwriting to be pretty) and also I get very self-conscious about my penmanship. My sarcastic thoughts seem really forced and even though every other word I say is “shit” or “fuck” it seems wrong to write down curse words in pen and my hand starts cramping and I’m three thoughts ahead while my hand is still seven sentences behind and just gaaaaah. So I figured that if I really did want to keep a log of my travel experiences I might as well type them and honestly it’s about damn time that I actually use my Tumblr account so here we are.
I still imagine a rom-com narrator type voice as I type this and I definitely imagine someone maybe reading this in the future (and then my anxiety kicks in a little because the thought of someone reading this and not liking it??? devastating. But maybe I shouldn’t have put my diary on the fucking Internet). I told myself my first post would be the whole “why am I doing this” in case I need a reminder 20 years down the road. Honestly, I feel ready to burst with the things that have not even happened yet and part of me wants to make this sorted by topic while another part of me wants to document by day but thus far both of those ideas are failing and this will probably be a mishmash of my experiences and memories/thoughts as I think of them.
Soooo, we’ve now reached the end of this post and I feel the familiar anxiety of being unsure of how to end it. So I’m sorry if it’s a little awkward, you should definitely get used to that. My next post and all the rest of them will be more structured and actually talk about Korea (I guess that’s why you’re here in the first place I’m sorry) so there’s a lot to look forward to. Thank you for reading this far oh and please stick around!

I guess people tend to think I’ll be more aggressive and outspoken about my beliefs than I really am. For example, I don’t like to tell people I’m a vegetarian because I feel like a lot of vegetarians are embarrassing. Like, I honestly don’t care what other people do or do not eat (unless I’m feeding them and then I want to know so I can accommodate them). I’m also agnostic/atheist but I admire religious people and often wish I had their faith. I find most atheists embarrassing too.

50 more interesting questions tag!
Rules: Fill this out and tag at least one person you’d like to know more about! Or just fill it out! Or don’t! Answer only some of them! Who am I to tell you what to do? Anything goes! tagged by @dear-mrs-otome (thank you for making this questionnaire!) and @slbp-owns-ayame! thank u for making me feel included, friends💓 i’ve crossed some questions out, mainly cos i’m too unfocused to answer them or cos i couldn’t think of an answer 😅
1. What kind of food can’t you stand?:
indian food, sadly ): i’ve had it once or twice and have therefore concluded that the spice is too much for me. i like their roti and naan, though!
2. If you could choose one minor inconvenience to never have to deal with again, what would you pick?:
shaving & waxing, definitely. i’m hairy as hell but i don’t want to shave any other part than my intimates and underarms cos apparently once you shave or wax, the hair grows thicker and i definitely don’t want to deal with that.
3. Have you got any useless talents?:
4. If you could be really really good at one thing, what would it be?:
i’d love to master how to counter being unproductive. this is a serious issue for me and i Don’t Know What To Do anymore.
5. Name a few people you think are extremely good-looking:
Kim Namjoon, Nam Joo Hyuk, Lee Min Ho, Cody Ko.
6. What was your favorite way to pass the time as a kid?:
drawing! i loved it then. my dad even got me a book on how to draw in anime style when i was around 10 or 11.
7. What is something you’re proud of?:
i got paid for a few published articles recently! i wasn’t expecting to, but am really proud of myself for it anyway.
8. What’s one character flaw in people that you just can’t tolerate?:
attention-seeking 100%. especially if the person is just doing it to ‘fit in’. i find it really cringey and frankly unsavory. don’t do things you don’t want to do just to feel cool!!!!!!!
9. Do you consider yourself to be more of a leader or a follower?:
a leader, tbh. i’d like to think i’m good at planning and motivating people to get moving on their tasks. as a follower, i always have suggestions as to how to make the plan more feasible, and eventually end up becoming the leader anyway.
10. What kind of student are/were you?:
i used to be a great student, a teacher’s dream lmao but now i guess i’m still the same, it’s just overshadowed by my laziness and inability to recognize urgency.
11. Butterfly effect question! Has there ever been a seemingly minor decision you’ve made (at the time) that ended up having a profound influence on your life?:
12. Name your most irrational fear/aversion:
I HATE BUGS AND INSECTS THEY ARE THE ONLY THINGS IN THIS WORLD I WILL HATE apparently this is called entomophobia
13. Are there any fictional characters you find especially relatable?:
14. If you drink, what kind of drunk are you? Alternatively, what sort of person are you at parties?:
i’m a quiet, spaced out drunk. i look like the type to fall asleep at any moment, but i’d liven up the moment you talk to me. at parties, i’m usually one of those people at the sidelines, just watching the others at the beginning. at the end, i’m with my friends doing something we’d most likely get suspended for lol
15. Do you fall in love easily? Or does it usually take a long time for you to trust someone?:
it depends on the person, i think. i catch feelings fairly easily if i think you’re cute, but actually falling in love would take prob a year from me, at least. i give my trust out quickly, but it’s not the kind of trust where i’d tell you all my deepest thoughts. it’s more of a, “yeah i’ll take you at your word, i don’t generally think you’’re shady” kind.
16. Would you rather have one close friend or 100 casual friends?:
aaaaaaaaaaaa i’m torn! talking to one person all day all the time can be tiring and draining, but having a ton of casual friends means not rly having someone to vent to, or someone to bounce ideas off of. i guess right now, i’m leaning towards the latter, simply because if you have a hundred casual friends online, it’ll be less awkward to talk about ‘deep’ things because chances are, you don’t know each other in real life lol
17. Do you consider yourself to be more of a slob or a neat-freak?:
both!!! i can be very organized and clean in the beginning, but then i get lazy to put whatever it is back to where i got it and i end up having a moderately organized messy work table.
18. Describe a place (imaginary or real) that you would find incredibly cozy:
sunlight pouring in through the slits of the window shades, making the room less dim. a white comforter on white sheets and black pillows, my laptop on top and hot tea on the bedside table, along with my phone. the air conditioner is on, the temperature matches perfect sweater weather. alternatively, cold wind blows in through the window.
19. Do you have kids? If not, do you want them someday?:
i don’t, and sometimes i think i want two of them! but who knows, everything changes.
20. What was your favorite book as a child?
it’s more of a series; the Berenstain Bears! Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter is a close runner-up.
21. Name one thing you just don’t get what all the hype is about:
buying official band merch! while i understand that it’s because they’re your idols, coming from someone who’s been a hard stan of a particular band for more than two years, once you grow out of them, you’re going to realize how much money you’d spent that could’ve gone to a better place. i just realized this still applies to me cos of slbp shut up
22. Name one thing that you think is tragically underrated:
it’s more of a person, actually; Cody Ko! i find his YouTube videos extremely funny, plus he’s cute lol
23. If you had to be glued to a person for a month, real or fictional (who you have never met), who would you choose?:
24. What’s something you’d like the chance to do someday?:
get into medical school and get my license, despite our financial stance. i always thought being a doctor or a lawyer was boring, but now being a doctor has a certain appeal to me. i’d love to help people through their sicknesses and help them feel and be better.
25. Do you typically speak your mind when you have a controversial opinion? Or do generally prefer to not rock the boat?:
i almost always speak my mind, and generally push aside any hesitance if it’s ‘controversial’, except of course if i don’t know much about what the issue is. i only choose to stay quiet when i know my opinion isn’t going to get through to whoever it is i’m talking to.

the grunge, all black hype of 2014 kjfjkdkjfdkjdfs i still cringe

i speak two, mainly; english and my native language!
31. Would you rather live in the big city or the countryside?:
big city, no hesitation.
32. Has there ever been something you were certain you’d hate, but ended up loving?:
kpop tbh. i used to be a lowkey hater when i was in elementary (but would jam out to them when i was alone), but loOK AT ME NOW
33. Do you mind being the center of attention, or do you prefer the spotlight to be on someone else?:
i’m alright with either, but prefer being at the back making things work for whoever’s on stage.
34. Favorite holiday?:
my birthday duh

i am and always will be in love with crime shows like Criminal Minds or CSI.
