the problems come up when you attack other people for their perspectives on the medium or spread misinformation about different characters based on only watching the perspective you like, but you know - if you’re not doing analysis, you really don’t need to look that deep into it.

no i’m - i’m pretty sure that’s just how it works. dream still owns the smp, but he himself has said wayy back at the beginning “everyone can build and go wherever they want” and that was that. it was one of his rules on the smp, it was his main problem with l’manberg. being able to build anywhere were the rules that he “had the right” to enforce. and he did, not because he was a god, but because it was his smp, his home that he claimed for his friends. wouldn’t call it a big debate, it’s really that simple.

Yes, I intentionally took that link down awhile ago, and last night I went and updated some of the tabs on my blog. Here are my basic thoughts:

I wrote that link years and years ago, while I was first navigating the internet and while I was still figuring out important things about my own identity and opinions. I ran my blog differently back then, but by the end of the first few months, I knew I was uncomfortable with shipping. 

As people began to interact with me and my work, I told them over and over again no, I don’t want to talk about that, and I don’t want to write about it, and it makes me uncomfortable. I don’t think that was a common position to take at the time, so it wasn’t what people expected from me. 

During those years, I felt like I had to justify myself and give a valid explanation. I wrote that post explaining why I had that boundary, and I put it in a place where anyone could find it.

I said no when people asked, let them make jokes about it, and made jokes about it myself in response. As time went on I got more and more exasperated when I had to repeat myself. I wrote definite rules into my ask box, request tab, and FAQ. People still asked. I wrote it into my description. People still asked. 

The truth is yeah, there’s a pretty simple explanation for my discomfort. It makes sense. It’s easy to understand, and most folks think it’s a “good enough” reason to leave me alone. The difference between young-me and current-me is that I no longer feel the need to justify myself. 

None of y’all need to know why I set the boundaries that I set. My explanation isn’t relevant, and I’m not obligated to give it. I said no. That’s enough. 

I think a good number of folks remember my explanation from the past, and I don’t mind that at all. There may be a time where I talk about it again, in a more appropriate context, so I guess we’ll see.

I do not believe that Mon-El is the spawn of Satan incarnate. 

But that’s not what I’m gonna go into. The real unpopular opinion?

I think he had the potential for a great, multi-layered foil to Kara’s character in season two and they absolutely wasted both of their characters on the arc that came. He could have been a wonderful foil for Kara’s unrealistic heroism (propagated by Superman/Supergirl all the time), but instead became a Grade B char to what he could have been

Let me tell you why (tw: unpopular rant below):

Obviously Mon-El was destined to be Valor (though that’s arguable given the fact that Winn Schott Jr. didn’t become a fellow child-serial killing maniac who wanted Cat Grant to be his mom bc his dad killed her kid, aren’t comics fun) but...what if he didn’t? What if his constant desire to live his own life/be an agent of impassiveness towards crime was...actually used?  Actually discussed? Actually presented as plausible?

I thought it would have been a fascinating story to see Kara faced with someone who just wanted to be normal, but their obtaining normalcy wasn’t burdened by the overwhelming urge to become a self-sacrificial hero. Yes, Mon-El becomes a bodyguard to earn money...but they didn’t even delve into why. They didn’t really see why he was doing those things. Why he felt the need to use his powers for ‘evil’ instead of good (which...is debatable). Kara just immediately saw his character as ‘not immediately redeemable’ and that always bugged me. Broke ties (for a hot minute in season two) and the idea of Mon-El being a foil to Kara’s desire to push the hero narrative immediately shattered. 

And then Mon-El changed? 

What a waste of potential!

I think the hero(tm) narrative is...complex. I think it’s something a lot of comics don’t dive into nearly as much as they should--the controversial topic of ‘what is everyone’s inherent responsibility to do good’. Does doing nothing mean you’re as good as killing people if you have the means to stop it? What if you upped the stakes--what if protecting those people could kill you? It’s a philosophical question, and a truth:

Being a hero, in the real world, even for an alien, would be dangerous.

Kara has this notion that she’s not doing all that she can for 23 years of her life, so clearly that was morally wrong--to stand idly by while she could have affected change in the world. She could have been saving people’s lives--she could have spent all of that time helping them--so isn’t the same as dooming them? Kara is shown to believe the mindset in s2 that if someone has the skillset, does that mean that they’re obligated to put the needs of others over their own? 

That’s the question I wanted Mon-El to ask of her.

Mon-El is introduced as Kara’s foil--culturally and morally. Inherently selfish, yes, but at the start of his character introduction...he just wanted to do nothing. And the show frames that as such a negative point from the get-go: ‘I don’t want to potentially sacrifice myself, so I’m inherently evil’. Now, in terms of superhero shows, that seems like a valid narrative, right?

Why? Why have we, as a culture, so inherently coded ‘heroes’ with ‘sacrifice’? There was an obvious reason for this during war-time when comics were so prevalent--when they were gaining such traction--and this is an idea that continuously resonates with people, imo, because it helps add weight to sacrifice, adds meaning where losing a loved one in war might have been meaningless...but is that always the most compelling narrative in a story? 

Is that always the most compelling narrative to ask ourselves?

One of my favorite moments of season two was when Winn was genuinely terrified for his life because he realized how close he would come to dying on a daily basis. This cookie-cutter, rose-colored glasses version of superheroes faded into the grim reality (of which Kara had been trying to warn both James and Winn of all season but yknow hey they gloss over the fact of that, too) that being a hero is dangerous.

And Winn is not equipped for this.

They gloss over that, too, in the end--wrap it up in a neat bow of self-triumph like the pressing question of Winn almost dying was just self doubt, instead of a real danger in their line of work...but man I would have loved that. I would have loved that with Winn, and I would have fucking loved that with Mon-El.

Yes, Mon-El has superpowers. Yes, he is mostly invulnerable, but the moment he becomes a real ‘hero’ in the classical narrative sense, it immediately showcases itself as self-sacrifice (which I know a lot of people on here will think is a controversial statement, in and of itself), he becomes the hero by sacrificing himself and leaving the planet.

WTF? Why? Why couldn’t he have been allowed to be the ‘well...is being a normal alien in hiding actually bad?’ character at the bar? The bartender--a friend--a confidante--a reminder that aliens could have ‘humanity’ that allowed them to be normal? That we can make a difference in our normal lives as humans. Why did his showcase of ‘heroism’ have to be giving up his ideals to code to a more publically accepted idea of heroes? 

Why do we always have to make heroes sacrificial? Why do we have to push the narrative that if we’re not saving someone (Cat pretty much said this to Kara s1 the moment she was revealed and no one can tell me that it didn’t resonate) you’re practically killing them. Why does everyone have to fight/be a vigilante/sacrifice to be a hero?

Why can’t it be dangerous? Why couldn’t Mon-El be used for this?

I would have loved to have seen the ramifications of this on the show. I would have loved to see that conversation--that debate. The fact that being a hero doesn’t always require sacrifice. The idea that Jimmy could stay at the paper ala Cat Grant and be a ‘hero’ without needing to punch things (s2 wrecked that). The idea that it is not evil or wrong for Mon-El to not want to be a hero. That it’s entirely valid as a choice for him to choose not to sacrifice himself...as long as he grew his character. Or even if that’s not the narrative they wanted to push, the show defining where those boundaries would be. I would have loved to see that struggle--that foil between Kara and Mon-El. Her pushing him too far and him pushing back. 

He could have grown without becoming her ‘protege’--without sacrificing his character struggles. He could have learned how to be a good person/she could have positively changed him as supergirl/Kara while narratively showing that you didn’t have to be the Red and Blue hero in order to make a difference.

Instead, you just got some candy-cutter love story about growth. It was a waste of both characters imo. A waste of good character growth and an interesting moral question:

What’s the humanity obligation to ‘help’. What does being a hero mean? 

But...yeah. Unpopular. He’s not Satan. And he could have been so much more interesting.

Aside from a devianart, redbubble and maybe even a tumblr for art commissions, he doesn't really care about social media. Or regular media. Politics who?

His favourite sport? Seeing how many cans of cola he can get through on an especially difficult project. (Cricket always looked kind of fun though)

Edd is pretty friendly and open with people, he likes getting to know them and joking around. He's the Ultimate Punmaster ™, and loves nothing more to poke fun. He sees the world through the eyes of a cartoonist, and will never miss a comedic opportunity.

Be warned! He's actually fairly smart, and can read people well, knowing just how to really get under someone's skin. It's a good thing he can't be bothered with any of that though.

Gets his best ideas either in the tub or when hes just about to sleep. Because of that, he keeps a water-proof and regular notebook. Nearly had a heart-attack countless times because he accidently swapped them around.

Despite his complaints about absurd plot conveniences, he actually likes Doctor Wh- i mean "Proffesor Why", there's just something about the concept of time travel...he also likes cartoons! Like, a lot. He'll watch most anything and everything if it's animated and the writing is decent.

Likes anything sour, sweet, and chewy! So Jelly Babies, Wine gums, Sour patch kids, that kind of thing

Second tallest! Quite a bit taller then Tom, a bit taller then Edd, just about average height, if a bit taller. He's closer to Matt in height then Edd.

He's actually quite well-built! You wouldn't think it because of the baggy hoodie he wears but he's got pretty good muscle, and his endurance and strength is well above the others. This mostly comes from the logic that he's been training and leading the Red Army, so it just makes sense to me that he'd resemble a soldier physically, yknow? AU-wise, or before he started the whole world domination thing, he'd be a little more scrawny, but he could still kick everyone's ass (he probably tried copying numerous anime battle stances lol-)

He's pretty well off, it turns out you can get quite rich by adopting some uh...rather unconventional means of money-making. Of course you could always say he just sold his inventions.

Does having your own private network of underground intelligence-gathering units count as social media? No? Nevermind.(He has a hentaihaven account-)

He likes dodgeball, archery, and you guessed it, arcade shooter games. Anything where he can point and hit something basically.

He smells like gunpowder, dirt, oil from machine maintenance and the cold? Like if the cold had a smell, he would have that smell, does that make sense? He also probably smells like Old Spice because idfk it just reminds me of him ok.

He doesn't exactly get out to socialise much, be prefers to stay at his desk, or curled up next to the fire with a mug of hot cider when he wants to relax. Sometimes Paul and Pat will drag him outside when they think he needs a breath of fresh air, and they'll go visit the nearest marketplace for food and other supplies. He likes strategic games like Chess or Draughts, and it's a good way to show off and get practice at the same time.

Scar-wise, he probably has quite a few from his fights. Post-the end, I'm not sure what would happen to him, since I've seen people go in a lot of different directions. I DO think he'd replace him arm with the robotic one, since that seemed too heavily implied to not happen. Regarding his face, I think the burns and stuff would probably heal over time, and depending on the technology in the future, he'd either still have some heavy scarring, or maybe he'd develop some kind of treatment so that it restores him to almost fully healed. He could always go the cyborg route and end up half-man half-machine like we see with future Matt and Tom.

(About the patch on his face, I have a theory about how he he aquired that scar/injury. See, I don't think Tord founded Red Army by himself, no. I think he was introduced to it by Paul (who we see in the same classroom as them in Poweredd) who was kept back a few years cause....uh...yknow- Anyway I have a theory that Tord eventually climbed the ranks until he became second-in-command, and he then murdered Red Leader and took his title. Their fight is where he got that injury. It's not really canon-supported much, but I find it an interesting concept!)

You've probably guessed, but I kind of disgree with Tord's portrayal sometimes. I think I prefer the darker, meaner side to him. I wouldn't say he's (completely) evil, but I'm not really one for the whole "self-hating, regretful angsty Tord who just wants some love and support" and stuff. I mean, it's cute with ships amd fluff, amd ideally he does make amends and rejoin the group, but I just like the thought that he's genuinely not a nice guy yknow? Like, he's actually done some fucked up stuff, and The End is probably just one case. (Of course this is all opinion based so feel free to disagree if u wanna wheeze-)

Has the WORST sleeping schedule. Has been known to fall asleep in the bath/shower.

He prefers movies to shows. His favourite is the Kingsman series (he can relate on many different levels).

Someone once described him as "borderline twink" and tbh i agree. I feel like he'd have a slightly feminine figure (which is perfectly normal!) and he both rocks it, and knows he does.

He works at a nail salon every now and again, his self-confidence and bubbliness makes him get along well with customers. (Also Matt would definitely wear nail polish ok dont even try to convince me otherwise. Actually speaking of,)

He has EVERY kind of social media possible. Instagram, twitter, facebook, tumblr, facebook, snapchat, you name it! He's especially prominent on instagram. He likes to keep an ~aesthetic~

He likes gymnastics and dance, activities like that. Anything which puts him in a creative spotlight. He'd probably take up acting classes, and then insist on only being given monologues.

He'd probably have quite a pleasant and nature-y smell? Like uhh citrus-y, pine tree, a hint of flowers, that kind of thing. Although he'd DEFINITELY slap on way too much cologne on a date or something and end up smelling like he just emptied out a bottle of febreeze.

He'd probably go out quite a lot! I can see Matt being a social butterfly, his friendliness and general likeability probably mean that he's got a few friends and stuff around. I can also see him as the kind of person who'd enjoy taking walks in the park, sitting below a tree, that kind of thing. He probably runs a self-love session (that works a little TOO well). He wants to get out there and show off his beautiful face, so it doesn't take a lot to drag him outside (provided you keep a mirror on you, that is).

He doesn't really have any physical scars. I mean, i do hc him with freckles, but they don't count so. he has a mental scar. After he hit himself with the memory eraser gun, he completely erased his memories. It took a while for him to settle onto the personality he has now. His face was the one thing that he knew for certain held a sense of familiarity and stability, so that's partly why his narcissism boomed so much. He sometimes gets random flashbacks of being a zombeh leader, being less of a nicer person, and it can be quite unnerving for him. He also has other memory issues, which is why he can forget things so easily, and comes across as an idiot most of the time.

He can be quite oblivious, but I dont think hes a total idiot. He can read people fairly well, and is emotionally intelligent. He says stupid things sometimes despite knowing they'll get a reaction, just because he wants to, and thinks that life should be as fun and full of joy as possible. He's too trusting, and wants to see the good in everyone. At the end of the day, if you disrespect him (and his face), you'll see that he can be more then just the nice guy.

LUSH!! Matt is HERE for all those lush products. I'm talking bath bombs, lip scrubs, shower jellies, all that good stuff! And ofc he has like 100+ products for his hair and skincare routine, because let's face it, it's Matt. I also like to think he owns a bunch of bath toys and rubber duckies, and like the kid at heart he is, he'll sit in a bubble bath playing with them, and re-enacting all of their adventures.

He mostly prefers youtube videos over TV, so you bet he's subscribed to all the beauty gurus, vloggers, people like that. He does think children's cartoons are nice to watch though, so every once in a while he'll force Tom and Edd to sit with him and watch the latest season of My little pony.

He likes anything sweet and fun to look at! Especially if it's trending, so he can post pictures of himself eating/drinking it. So if there's another rolled ice cream/new starbucks-ccino/unicorn themed food item floating about, he'll probably be trying it.

summary: college au! park jihoon, you have the biggest crush on him and you don’t know how to deal with it a/n: requested; tell me what you think!!

you meet jihoon during orientation week in your new university

your school splits all freshmen students into their orientation groups based off the faculty they’re from & you guys spend one whole week bonding over all sorts of games and activities and camps and seminars and all that fun stuff

you do make some new friends but each group has like 30 people so you don’t even bother trying to remember everyone’s names and faces right away

which is why you are completely unaware that there is a walking male god among you guys who goes by the name of jihoon

on the second day, after a few hours of everyone playing water games and messing around with all the props and creating an absolute mess, you are tasked with the duty of washing out and refilling one of the big buckets you guys had used

your friends offer to help you but you’re like nah i got this

but once you’re at the tap you’re like wtf? i need to use two hands to handle the bucket but i need a third hand to hold down the tap? you’re a mess

and just as you’re struggling suddenly there’s an arm extending over you to the tap to hold it down for you

and you follow the hand to see that it leads to a boy who is extremely good looking

“no worries i got you”

and he just stands there holding the tap for you and watching you hastily rinse out the bucket and refill it 

and you’re super flustered but touched because this boy is super super SUPER good looking and you have no idea how you didn’t notice him before but also he’s being super nice 

as if holding down the tap for you wasn’t enough he even offers to carry the heavy bucket back

and you’re already halfway in love by the time you’re back with your group lmao

so you spend the rest of orientation admiring him from afar because you’re too shy to go and actually talk to him but also

anyways orientation week ends like that and actual uni life starts 

tbh you’d expected this but barely a month into uni and jihoon is already so popular like everyone knows park jihoon from the business school who has a face carved by the gods themselves and a personality to match

now and then when you bump into him around campus he always smiles at you in way of saying hi because he remembers you from orientation and it’s such a small thing but everytime he does it you’re a mess for a solid 10 mins afterwards

one day you’re having lunch in the garden cafeteria with your roommate doyeon when she catches you making heart eyes at jihoon who’s sitting a couple of tables away from you two

“oh my god, dude. jihoon???”

and you try to feign innocence and you’re all like “what do you mean”

because it’s kinda embarrassing to admit you have a crush on The Jihoon because like?? so does everyone else

but doyeon sees right through you and she knows exactly how to get you to admit to it

“seems like you don’t know but i know jihoon. he’s in my dance club yknow just saying”

“WHAT”

“yeah, i was going to introduce you if you were interested but since you say you’re not... oh well”

“i mean i’m not not interested! even if i’m not interested there’s no harm in making new friends and even if i’m interested- wait i’m not but-”

doyeon just smirks at the spluttering mess you are

over the next few days, doyeon keeps coming up with new ways in which you could ‘accidentally’ meet jihoon (bc you’re too embarrassed to let her just introduce you to him like that) but you reject them all 

until one day she barges into your room and slams a piece of paper onto the table in front of you

“this is it. this is the only way”

the paper has an advertisement for a creative discussion club and you’re like WHAT what does this even mean???

“idk but jihoon’s gonna be there and so are you”

so flash forward to wednesday a week later and you find yourself in this seminar room

there are about a dozen others already there and among them is jihoon

you take a seat at his opposite side of the room bc u sneaky

so basically this club is just for people to like talk about current issues or long ongoing problems like poverty or racism

it’s just a safe place to share opinions and spread awareness and stuff like that and of course jihoon is perfect enough to be interested in these kind of things

initially you start out as a pretty silent member, just watching the others talk and admiring jihoon

surprisingly so is jihoon, he mostly just listens to what the others have to say and pipes in an opinion now and then

but as time passes you find yourself naturally speaking up and getting actively engaged in the discussions

as the topics turn to issues that you genuinely feel for, or when someone expresses a thought that you just can’t agree with because it seems to come from a place of ignorance, you start forgetting your initial purpose in joining the club and start genuinely enjoying the meetings

this is also when jihoon starts to notice you

little do you know that everytime you speak up during discussions and passionately argue your stance during discussions, jihoon is watching you from the other side of the room thinking

damn that’s impressive

he also thinks you’re really cute but you don’t find that out until one day when doyeon barges into your room once again

jihoon is amazing??? if you hadn’t already known you wouldn’t have guessed that this was a guy who was super popular and had like the whole school wishing they were his friend bc he’s so sweet

you guys have the same sense of humour and at least once during every date there’s a point where you guys are laughing til you’re crying

that’s not to say that sense of humour is normal though like there was this one time you two went on a double date with doyeon and a guy called seongwoo

and you guys are all super stuffed bc the food is really good like you’re filled with food and on the verge of death but after your main course ends like you can’t even move but seongwoo goes “hey what do you guys want for dessert?”

and jihoon just looks at you like you’re the camera and he’s the guy from the office and with a completely straight face says “the waffles with a double scoop of rocky road”

for some reason the situation cracks the two of you tf up and you guys are there laughing like actual seals while doyeon & seongwoo are just looking on like. omg wtf

(in case you’re curious doyeon & seongwoo never become an actual thing bc they’re too good of a combo as just friends)

one day you’re walking back to the dorms with jihoon after a creative discussion club meeting and you decide to stop by this streetside food stall to buy some chicken skewers bc yall are starving

the old lady behind the stall gives you guys one extra stick for free because “aww you two are such a cute couple i remember back when i used to roam around with my boyfriend” and she coos at you two

but as you two are walking back after that jihoon turns to you and asks “so? what do you think?”

“no not about that,, as in what do you think about me being your boyfriend?”

tbh after that you two become one of The Campus Couples bc you two are really cute tgt 

after a while you confess to him that you actually already used to like him since all the way back in orientation and that’s why you even joined the club

and he’s like “dammit why didn’t you tell me earlier we could have been a thing since day one” lmao

Hashtag relateable protagonist yo

Gonna give some comments on Red String Of Fate as I play it! You can get the game here and it’s actually free to play. So yeah, even as I criticise parts of it, keep that in mind! Its really great for a free short lil slice of cuteness.

Oh, but the font size is weirdly small for some reason so I’m gonna be mostly doing cropped screenshots so you can see it thru tumblr auto resizing. Also the character sprites are very basic tbh, its like one pic that never changes throughout the game except eyes closed/eyes open and stuff. Like a lot of visual novels dont do much body language but the faces are very awkward here too. But yeah this isn’t a huge criticism cos I mean its free! Its impressive they managed to pull off this much in a quick project! I’ve seen way worse VNs on steam getting huge price tags, so i honestly don’t think this one should have been free, even if I have some complaints about it.

Anyway, onward!

We’re introduced to the premise of the story- that our heroine has the magic power to see red strings that show who your true love is. And by sheer coincidence during an exam she bumps into someone else who has the power! ...aaaand also she has a best friend, I guess. Seriously I feel kinda bad for Aaron, he’s not in on the secret or anything and if you take Luke’s route he’s just like comic relief the whole time. I wish there were more of the scenes where the three of them actually hang out as buddies.

I actually really liked the interesting ideas they had about how the red string could work! It’s just a shame that with the static character sprites you like.. literally never see any red strings at all except on the title screen. i wish I could have seen these cool ideas!

Oh and here’s a full screenshot so you can see the two love interests! Luke is on the left and Aaron is on the right. Luke is the mysterious other guy with the same power, Aaron is the adorable best friend who gets sidelined right away unless you pick his route. Like, I went for Luke route first cos I liked Aaron better and figured doing the best route last would be better than in DDADDS where i left the worst for last. I guess I can just hope that maybe Luke is equally sidelined on the other route? I wish neither of them were, tho, the game is best when they’re all playing off each other as the super besties team! Oh and like lol their personalities are very simple, but again it makes sense for a short free dating sim. And a LOOOOT of big paid dating sims have equally stereotypical roles, so yeah! But anyway just remember that grey guy is Books and yellow guy is Vidyagaems. Everything about them revolves around their hobbies, in that way that doesnt happen outside of basic children’s cartoons. MAN I am being too harsh on this game, lol!

Again, interesting uses of the red string thing! And it also makes Aaron instantly more intriguing than Luke. I mean, just to me ‘hey wow a thing that should be impossible according to my superpower and maybe we can find out the mystery behind it’ is more intriguing than just ‘another guy with power’. Like you at least have a frame of reference on how that plot will generally go, yknow? Also I’m intrigued cos I would have just guessed that a broken string means ‘he’s promiscuous and doesnt want to settle down’ from the context of this scene. But its curious to think that it could mean he had a soulmate once and they DIED??? And like what, does that mean your personality changes when it happens or something? Like is it not his own fault he’s flighty and has a lot of girlfriends, that just happened cos supernaturalness? I DO NOT UNDERSTAND

Okay this is kind of a weird thing. The first scene says they’re all in a philosophy class, but then their group assignment is science? And its just like.. make a presentation about LITERALLY ANYTHING YOU WANT. And for some reason they pick evolution, and think that everyone will pick evolution???? And Aaron says some very basic stuff about Darwin and then protagonist is like ‘I CANT UNDERSTAND THESE COMPLEX SCIENCE TERMS’ like.. literally the word Darwin... Basically, its a good old classic ‘school life as plot point, without showing any of the school life’ setup. We never see any other students or hear the name of the place or get much of an idea about what’s going on. And sadly we don’t even get to see their presentation even though that was a main plot point for 75% of the game! Just timeskip to the end and they’re all like Hey Do You Remember That Thing That We Did Offscreen... ANYWAY, MOVING ON!

A random moment I liked- protag and Luke talking about the stress of this superpower and exchanging tips on coping with it, that kinda seem like a depression or anxiety metaphor.

This is kinda the start of a very weird recurring plot thread for the protagonist.. Like.. she wants to find her soulmate but she REALLY wants to find her soulmate! She obsesses over it really melodramatically as if her life will have no purpose without love, and we hear about how she’s been doing weird self destructive and kinda jerkass things in the name of soulmate searching. Like she’s planned her WHOLE LIFE around it! She’s been working four jobs for years to save up to move to another country she knows nothing about and doesnt speak the language of, just because ‘my soulmate must be far away’. And she’s apparantly dumped everyone who’s ever tried to be in a relationship with her because if they dont have the string they aren’t ~really real love~ Like wow girl I am not sympathising with your perspective, this is really messed up. I hope the game actually brings up some of the problems with this and the ending isnt just finding the soulmate and everything is fine!

There’s a few weird moments of stuff about china in this VN, and then they like only say at the last minute that the protagonist is half chinese. Like you put the context an hour after the thing that required it...

Randomly I like that they did a splitscreen effect for talking on the phone.

Its conspicuously weird that they have no character portrait for this guy, he gets no dialogue, and he really does nothing in the plot. So it makes you wonder why they even mentioned him?

Its weird that Luke finds it cute and charming when I’d just call her rude and be super embarassed at people ruffling thru my things without asking Anyway he has A Bunch Of Rare First Edition Books and also A Library Room because He Is The Books Man But it is a nice bit of backstory that he got the rare books as a gift from his deceased grandpa. I MOURN YOU ALREADY, MYSTERY GRAMPS

AWW! Every now and again they actually do have pretty good chemistry! ‘But I just want to be friends!’ *mumble mumble* ‘we’re friends’ Grumpy shy book man does care!

Though as of this point they haven’t really had much else of chemistry, it all moves very fast and I feel like this scene maybe should have been earlier? Like seriously we go straight from ‘I just met this guy, all I know is that he hates having his superpowers and I love it’ and then they get put on a group project and then Friends Now. The game has a lot of soft timeskips that’re never really indicated, which causes a bit of confusion. There is a bit of nice continuity here tho, cos you get the choice to either keep arguing about the superpowers or drop it and try and just be friends. Either way the game follows the same conclusions, but you get a lil bonus bit of dialogue mentioning how things were super tense for a while but eventually you became friends anyway thanks to the group project.

This Scene Is Weird Apparantly one of protag’s billion jobs is at a library, and she sees Luke checking out books and makes fun of him? And like from this response I thought he was checking out lesbian porno or something but apparantly he was just checking out poetry? What the hell is wrong with a LITERATURE STUDENT checking out poetry?? When did poetry become a no men thing, was it around the time it was a male dominated field, like novels? >_> And its all kinda pointless cos she ends up being perfectly nice to him about the poetry later and even talks about how she likes poetry too, so wow hypocrite much

There is a nice dialogue choice tho, the two of them talk about a poem and the different interpretations of it, and you get to choose which you prefer as the player. Luke prefers if you agree that the satirical interpretation is better, cos apparantly he Hates Love And Such Which leads us into...

...what. Seriously this game is so weirdly melodramatic about love, even for a visual novel! the whole main conflict of the protagonist is about ‘wah what if i never fall in love, my life would have no meaning’ and also dumping everyone no matter how much you like them cos ~magical destiny is the only real one~ and now we’re like OH GOD WHAT A TRAGEDY THE ONLY REASON SOMEONE COULD WANT TO BE SINGLE IS BECAUSE A DEEP TRAUMA MADE THEM STOP BELIEVING IN LOVE like seriously dude just has a mild amount of skepticism towards overly cheesy romance novel depictions of love, thats like a minor and super common difference of opinion, not a deep plot twist

...seriously? ‘you cant read books unless you read books about love’ like yo i wouldnt even say books are remotely near the top ten most sex-obsessed mediums of all time. music and film are way worse!

Again weird comments about china. Is this really a thing that happens? High class chinese people visit chinese restaurants more often than poor white people? Like, I dunno, I just feel like uninformed white folks who undervalue the work that goes into making foreign food and reduce its reputation to takeaway-only are SLIGHTLY the majority of customers you’d get...

Again, melodrama. Not much has actually happened yet except we met the two boys, we got put in a study group together, and we chose to study with Luke instead of party with Aaron. But like interspersed is a whole bunch of Drama that feels a bit forced, with the lack of real situations causing it. like here she’s just walking through the park and wants to cry because she.... sees that straight people exist. Me too, lol. no but really she just sees that One Other Couple Exists In The World and she starts wanting to cry in the middle of the park and like.. the only thing keeping you from dating someone is your obsessive belief that they cant be your real love if they dont have this magical signal of destiny. And then she just reiterates her crazy ass plan to drop her studies and fly off on a world tour to test her string against every other human on earth and find her soulmate...

SEE THE SCENES OF THEM BEING BESTIES ARE AWESOME I’m way less invested in this love triangle and more invested in them just succeeding in their group project!

NO, I REALLY WISH I COULD HAVE seriously we dont see ANY of the group project, it just timeskips to them celebrating their victory. and this means we dont get to see many scenes of luke and aaron interacting, sadly :(

LOOK AT THEM THEY ARE SO CUTE ALL TOGETHER I LOVE AND SUPPORT THEIR FRIENDSHIP also its kinda funny that the game barely has any changes on the character sprites yet it has really great and detailed CG images. I feel like maybe if you prioritized these less it could have led to a more consistant experience?

Just to prove that this is indeed the actual plot of the game, she really is planning to fly across the world for the sake of this shit

Also this line raises a lot of questions. Do asexual people not exist in this universe? or just people who never want to get married and only want casual sex or whatever? or does it mean they still have red strings but they look different? Also this game seems to define it pretty distinctly as only heterosexual destiny strings here, so like would gay people not have strings or would they have differently coloured strings? or is she just assuming all soulmates are the opposite sex simply because she’s straight and she didnt think about the alternative? or cos the writer didn’t? or maybe the writer did and it was just awkwardly written so it raised these questions in my head...?

^ and here’s the bit where she mentions she’s part chinese suddenly at the last moment, and also he’s part japanese too. Which made me a bit worried actually cos she mentioned asia as one of the random places she was gonna search first for her soulmate, and I thought maybe this means he’s her soulmate. But thankfully thats not the way the plot went and it actually does discuss the topic of destiny in more detail!
