My Love Mix Up Episode 1

Let me start with some clarity on my perspective on this adaptation:

I have of course seen the Japanese live action Kieta Hatsukoi. It's not one of my personal favorites but it's a great show doing a very Japanese style of slapstick comedy.

I am going into this adaptation skeptical, same as I did for Cherry Magic Thailand (though that project completely won my heart and I ended up liking it more than the JBL, so my skepticism is by no means immovable). I am not opposed to this adaptation, but the pre-show content has not been promising.

I’ve been a fan of Fourth and Gemini in previous shows (Moonlight Chicken being their best work, IMO), but I have felt since they first started releasing teasers for this project that they are miscast in this and should have swapped roles.

So with that said, how was episode 1? It was fine! Not bad, not amazing, and pretty much what I expected. Some reactions:

I really like the actress playing Mudmee and think she has good chemistry with Fourth.

This first ep hit all the expected beats and inserted a couple things that are not in the source material, like the cat and the badminton plot. I am guessing that's mostly to add time, though personally I think the JBL’s choice with the dog who doesn't like Aoki is much more fun than the ~fated cat connection~ thing.

This version has toned down the zany energy of the original live action. I think that's for the best, as the slapstick moments that are still here are not hitting very well, but it does change the overall feel of it quite a bit.

AUNGPAO MY BELOVED. I'm excited to see him in another show and he looks flawless.

I stand by my belief that the main pair should have swapped roles. You can see them working hard to suppress their natural instincts in every scene. I don't blame the actors for this, they are still so early in their careers to be asked to act against type to this degree.

GMMTV is doing the same weird light filtering thing on this show that they did on 23.5. Why??? It makes the scenes look fuzzy.

This one definitely doesn't feel as revelatory to me as Cherry Magic Thailand's first episode did. With that one, right out of the gate I knew I was eating crow on my skepticism. I am not eating crow on this one yet; its execution is about at the level I expected and so far it hasn’t recalibrated the story to fit these actors and the Thai style as well as CMT did. But it’s still early so we’ll see how it progresses!

Bro why does life hate me so much 😨

- I accidentally stabbed myself with my pencil so now there's a scar

- I got hit with a Badminton racket... TWICE

- Got hit with a Badminton racket on like my left arm and it's still red ?!!!??? (Other time I got hit on my right elbow)

- The seniors left :(( SO THAT MEANS MY FAVORITE SENIOR THAT WOULD SOMETIMES COME INTO MU ORCHESTRA CLASS LEFT. IM SAD.

- So there was this sub that substituted for my science class twice. The first day she said my name right and then the 2nd day she.. mispronounced it ?? Then she was the sub for my orchestra class and she mispronounced it SO BADLY.

- Today my bus was so empty... like I don't know where everyone went ??? Like there was maybe around 15 people ? (There would be A LOT more but I don't count so...)

But some good news

- I asked my mom if I could skip school on Monday because they won't be taking like any more grades / assigning more stuff, I've finished all my post-tests and she said like "why not" since I did use that nothing important was gonna happen, worst thing I miss would be missing out practice time in Orchestra (concert is on the 18th)

- Today I literally did not do shit for classes. I did some work for science (dunno why we're doing it cause it's due Tuesday...???) and then we went outside, then went to the gym for 2nd period

(see that's interesting cause I had SS for 2nd period and we were suppose to be in the classroom but the math and ela teacher took us to the gym. Then I had to go to 3rd period because my art teacher was absent so we went to the other art room. Then for 4th period we went to gym again cause I had ELA and then we immediately went to lunch and it was so crowded, like there was 3 grade levels in there and it would've been 4 but one grade went on a field trip I think and then I went to orchestra but we had a sub and she was not it nuh-uh. And then for 6th period I went to the gym again cause I had math soooo. Also, for orchestra the sub didn't let us go to the gym bc we had gone to the gym a lot already even though some people didn't go as many times as some others)

- HSR !!! Super fun !!! 6:47 I just went to school, And I brought my badminton to play with my friends Ivan played with me he is very good especially in doubles.

7:30 am it was our math class and the lesson we have learned was about integers it was very easy but I dont know why my other classmates dont know integers very much.

9:30 am it was our snack break there were 2 math class that time many didn't even listen, probably thats the reason why they dont how integers.

9:45 am it was our health class luckily we just reviewed about our lesson and the lesson was about the diseases like the respiratory diseases, neurological diseases skin diseases but luckily it was very easy.

10:15 am English class, it was our game day! but teacher said that we should do lesson first before the game class was over game day was like hide and seek but in the classroom now it was our lunch break

11:05 Now it was our lunch break 45 minutes to eat all of my classmates was happy that our lunch break was 45 minutes because we can anything we want like marites etc etc.

11:50 am It was our Music class and few of my classmates left the classroom because it was there BOB ROUND 1 our teacher asked us if we want to go down she was talking with maam rose-an all my classmates said sure lets go to the gym, but I said teacher Lesson first and teacher rose an told teacher Cel whats my name she told her my name and she left, and then we watch General Luna Full Movie.

12:40 Chinese Class, Laoshi Angela said that we are going to the gym to watch the BOB ROUND 1 because it was almost over and we dont have anymore lessons in chinese class (Oral Convo), We were at the gym now and my classmates score 41 but we were still ranked 4 my classmates were sad, angry, anyways while we were watching I was in charge I told my classmates to be quiet but they still keep being noisy and they always tease me like we were roleplaying They told me I was the father and the mother was kean A BOYYY and broo I didnt even like the tease so I ignored them they keep saying sorry and I accepted it.

1:30 Snack break again and so many of my classmates were crying because they were ranked 4 in BOB ROUND 1 I knew why, then we went back to our classroom and it was fun because me and my classmates played badminton inside I know it does not have the much of space, we even played ping pong and taya tayaan. 1:45 Snack break was over and it was our ESP class the lesson was easy because it was all about law it was like Moral Law something like that teacher gave us lectures and etc.

2:30 Class was dismissed we were very tired and we played badminton and a teacher took my shuttle-cock I was so sad but atleast I have 5 more shsh.

Our 3-day Intramurals

Day No. 1 - Wed, October 25, 2023

Today, was our first day of intramurals. Both teams, Golden Flames and Lightning Jams met at our school, I am in the team Lightning jams. Once all the members of both teams were there, we started a parade towards the place of ma'am Songcal, a place where we normally have our intramurals. On the way, both teams chanted what we practiced a few days ago, while also raising the props we made. It was super fun! Our school guard even came along with the parade! When we arrived, we started the program a few moments later. It started with the Lupang Hinirang, the Philippine national anthem, and then followed the lighting of the torch, by one of my groups leaders. After that, we said the Oath of Amateurism, in which only a few people said the oath properly, as others forgot what to say. Afterwards was a song performed by NxN, the song they performed was "Raining in Manila" by Lola Amour, many students sang and cheered along with the song! Following was the production number of the candidates of Mr. and Mrs. Intramurals. Once a candidate from our team was introduced, we would cheer as loud as we could! The candidates couldn't help but smile at the audience. Then was a song performed by Crimson, called "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus, again, many students cheered and sang along and some even waved their hands. Later was the dance of grades 1 & 2, and 3 & 4, their parents rushed to the front to watch and some also took videos, the dance was good and cheerful. Then was the raising of the banners, both team leaders had to tie their team banner on the wall and race to see whos first, Lighting Jams won this. Our team cheered so loud for our leaders, im sure they were really happy. Lastly were some more songs performed by NxN, Crimson, Infin8ty, and Seventh Symphony.

In the afternoon, those with sports like badminton, basketball, etc went to that place again, while those who didn't stayed i school. I stayed at school since im only in the game scrabble, so we played, and J, my friend ,won the match. It was a fun game and it made me learn a bit more about scrabble. Afterwards me and J, headed to the gr.8 room, and ended up playing some really fun games there! We almost didn't notice it was time to go home, because we were so focused on the game! Our day no.1 of intramurals was amazing! It was fun, and nothing went wrong!

Day No. 2 - Thu, October 26, 2023

Today, was of second day of intramurals. Again, those with sports went to the place of ma'am Songcal, while those who didn't stayed at school. Since some of us from Lightning Jams stayed, we helped our leader in making props, some pompoms. We need to make 15 pairs. While making our pompoms, there were times when we needed more crepe paper, double-sided tape, etc, so our leader went out to buy some more. Today was one of my classmates birthday, so during lunch break, his parents gave us some food, it really was good! Afterwards, one of my teachers told us that if we didn't have sports, or if we didn't win one of the games, that we could go home already, so the second day of our intramurals was short, but still, it was fun and we had a really great time!

Also, it turns out we had to go back to school before 12:30, but i didn't bring my phone, so i couldn't read the chat in our teams gc. J said they worked on props, and i feel bad i couldn't help, but theres always tommorow, right?

Day No. 3 - Fri, October 27, 2023

Today was the third, and also the last day of our intramurals. For me, today was the best day out of the three, alot of exciting and fun stuff happend. In the morning, we met at school and finished some of the props, like the pants that needed golden foil, and the confetti. The other team, Golden Flames, were practicing on the school grounds, so we took advantage of that opportunity and practiced on the place of ma'am Songcal, and went back to school for lunch, we went back there in the afternoon. Now in the afternoon, we waited for a few minutes for the program to start. It started of with the introduction of the candidates of Mr. and Mrs. Intramurals, since they had to do that again because last time, there were no judges, again we all cheered for the candidates from our team, also those from Golden Flames! After that, the Golden Flames performed their chant, and also their cheer dance. Both teams practiced them a few days ago, and also this morning. Their dance was amazing! It looked so good with all their props! Everybody cheered for them. Afterwards, it was our turn to dance and chant, we were all excited, but also nervous at the same time. After our dance, some people cheered and we were all proud of our selves, since we tried our best. Then, those candidates began their sports demonstration. Their outfits were great, and also their demonstration! Next, one of our teachers chose people to give their experience of this years intramurals, some students ran to the back just to escape being chose! I think she only chose about 8 students, including former Mr. and Mrs. Intramurals. Lastly was the awarding. Mostly members of our team won some of the Mr. and Mrs. Intramurals awards, like best in sports demonstration, etc. Following was the awards for the winners of the sports, and winners of the board games chess and scrabble. Then she gave an award to the team with better sportsmanship, best cheer dance, etc. And finally, she announced the overall champion, of the Intramurals 2023. After all that practice, and the 3-days of intramurals, we won! Everybody from Lightning Jams jumped around and cheered so loud i could feel my eardrums pop! All that hands up was definetly worth it, and in the end, both teams did amazing, and im sure we all did our best! This intramurals was my first time being in a team, and it was definetly my best! Especially when some of my classmates will move schools next year, this is a huge memory for us! After all that, I conclude, this was our 3-day Intramurals, 2023!

all this started an argument and tussle and which end up being very violent and toxic .. End of Summer Cook Out

It was finally the end of summer cookout at Belle’s castle. Beast still hadn’t shown face since Dale showed his. Dale did a lot of soothing over the woman considering he felt a little responsible for her losing her job and destroying her reputation. She lost half of her friends over it. She was trying to salvage what she could. However, Dale had always been up front as he told his father. He never hid his intentions of them being for fun. There’s always that gal who says she’s in it to have a good time and then gets swept away and expects more. That was Belle. 

Is Belle. 

This was the day Belle gets the shock of her life as Dale shows up with a Plus 1 from camp named Justine - He said he’d help plan it and make sure the grills got manned and the weed was stocked (Thank you Wulf.) Dale will claim he never said he’d be Belle’s date. There will be a public argument front and center for anyone who showed up early. Belle would be yelling, “But, your name is on the damn invitations, Dale!” 

Where he would again say, “Yeah, because I helped plan it and invited my friends to your yard, for your food, and my weed. Our cookout. Plus 1.” 

Flotsam would get to witness this because they’d want to get there early to find the best out of the way place to set themselves up and still get to people watch and hopefully see Tree. They’d find a nice shady spot under a willow tree not far from the house in case they had to get inside for the bathroom or air conditioner.

This was still Beast Castle so if you weren’t on the list you weren’t getting in. Belle had one Magisterium keeper to help with the door and play bouncer just in case. When Dale sees it’s Xigbar he’s going to be very happy he came with someone and pissed her off because that crossed a line for him. 

The drama starts there. Dale would come over to Flotsam and Thomas under the willow waiting for things to get started when Xig showed up. 

“Can you believe this shit? Fucking Fuckbar.” 

Dale’s grudge was a thousand miles wide over his mother telling him to go to Xigbar for answers back when the school was closed down. 

“When I suggested some of her pals from school to see who’s true I didn’t fucking mean Fuckbar.” 

Flotsam sat back with their IV and first bottle of suds and grinned over at Thomas. This was why they had to come. All the drama, it wasn’t going to be theirs for once, and they could just sit back and enjoy the show. Flo couldn’t even be mad anymore. They had Thomas. The Cinderella grudge felt long gone even if it was alive and well for Dale right now. Flo was almost home free in New Zealand. They didn’t have to get wrapped up in any of this shit. Now this was the life. 

“I don’t know what to tell you, babe.” Flo would say to Dale. “Enjoy your party and cut the cunt off? Or don’t?” 

Flotsam was still half giggling over seeing Belle upset over Justine from camp. But, when Flo waved to say their hellos to her they found it highly interesting all they kept asking about was, “When is River getting here?” Later in the conversation she’d say, “Have you seen River yet?” Three times in a 5 minute conversation she would ask if any of them knew when River could get there. 

While Dale was bitching about Xigbar and Belle and even eventually went off to help Wulf and his girl over by the grill his won plus 1 only seemed to be there to see someone else. People should be knocking at the door any time now. 

As she toddled off to ask someone else if they knew when River was going to be there Flo leaned into Thomas, “You caught that right? This whole BBQ is going to combust and none of them know it yet and we’ve got front row seats.” 

Flotsam was already high as a kite despite Jesula’s warnings not to push it when they’re finally getting better. But, Flo was Flo and it was a party. They busted out laughing about that girl’s eyes being all over that damn yard, but at Dale. Belle’s eyes were unable to focus on anything but Dale while trying to make him jealous of Xigbar while it was clear Dale was refusing to even bat an eye in either of their directions. 

Wulf was already manning the grill and showing off for a girl the Laveau’s didn’t know, probably from Sherwood, helping out. He was one of the early birds since he stocked Dale in green. 

Zero and Victor would roll in and so would Little John and some of the other merry men. The back courtyard was about to start filling in, so Dale flipped up some music as Zero talked Victor into an awkward looking game of tether ball. Zero would keep doing all this all night, luring Victor into yard games like croquet and badminton because it was funny to watch him try, and Victor would do anything to make Zero happy. The merry men would be discussing spits and open fire pits for roasting having fun with teasing the modern grills.

,,Sports day at the company? Sounds fun to me!’’ you wrote in the chat when your husband and Jaehee talked about the sports day at the C&R.

Yoosung somehow convinced the whole RFA to come, even though Jumin told them countless times that they couldn’t come.

But you were also excited to have a fun day with your friends so your husband accepted them.

When the day came, you were wearing a sports skirt as well as a shirt and a hat.

Jumin was currently putting some sunscreen on your skin, knowing that you had sensitive skin.

,,If it’s too hard, Mc, please take a rest, my love,’’ Jumin kept saying.

But you had no intention of giving up and so the day began.

Zen was constantly trying to beat Jumin and Jumin simply loved to show you how good you were.

You, however, also wanted to show them all how good you were and of course not giving people a single chance to bad mouth you.

However, three hours later you were just weak. The sun was way too strong and you didn’t drink enough water.

Jumin, of course, noticed your condition and quickly approached you, catching you before your body hit the ground.

,,Mc, my love!’’ he called out.

,,Jumin, I’m so weak…’’ you laughed and tried to hold onto him.

In less than a second, he had you between his arms and he carried you towards the infirmary, trying to make you feel better.

Zen

You knew how much he loved to work out so you decided to go to the gym with him.

Of course you never had as much of a workout as today.

Zen always made sure that you stayed healthy and drank a lot of water and would take a good rest, but at some point he was concentrating so much on his own workout that he completely forgot that you never worked out that hard.

He just noticed again when you were laying on the ground, panting and trying to get up again.

,,Princess! I’m so sorry! Should I call and ambulance?’’ he asked you, concerned and sorry that he didn’t notice.

,,No,’’ you whispered. You were even too weak to move your head.

,,Can you just please carry me home? I can’t move anymore…’’ you laughed.

He smiled at you and gladly took your body in his strong arms.

Your chest was pressed against his wet body.

,,Sorry, I smell gross…’’ he apologized sorry.

,,No, you’re hot,’’ you mumbled and blushed as you rested in his arms, making him feel even better…’’

,,You game too much after work!’’ you nagged at him.

,,We need to do some workouts!’’ you told him and pulled him.

Yoosung was unsure if he could even endure so long.

But you were so firm about this so he agreed with you.

Well, you were right after all. He needed to move more.

And so both of you changed into some sports gear and began to run around the park, stopping a few minutes for some different workouts and then kept running.

However, at some point you didn’t feel your feet anymore and just had to stop.

Yoosung on the other side was more than filled with power.

,,I can’t anymore,’’ you gasped.

Yoosung smiled as he went on his knees.

,,I will give you a piggyback ride,’’ he offered and made you smile.

You put your weak arms around him as he supported your legs and walked home with you on his back.

,,I was always jealous of Zen,’’ he began.

,,But now I feel strong. I can carry my own wife home,’’ he smiled, flustered and turning red.

You chuckled to yourself and you were really glad when he even made you a warm bath and took your clothes off. You were really too weak to move...

,,I believe that we walk more than enough at the coffee shop, but if you want to, Mc,’’ Jaehee smiled and took the sports bra you gave her, ready to change into it and do the workout you decided to do with her.

Both of you were motivated to do this, moving your hands, legs, hips and feeling the burning muscles.

You both were sweating.

The room was turning hot as both of you kept doing the work out.

But suddenly you felt your legs giving up and it happened.

You didn’t collapse, but you fell on the floor and couldn’t get up anymore.

,,I think we need to stop, Jaehee…’’ you laughed after she got the shock of her life.

,,Ah, are you okay?’’ she asked you and sat down next to you.

Your chest was moving up and down as you tried to calm your breathing.

The sweat was dripping down your chest, having your girlfriend’s whole attention.

,,You’re eating too much junk food,’’ you told him and showed him the empty bags of his favorite chips and the empty cans of his favorite drink.

,,Yes, if you want-ah! Don’t make me talk! Get up! We’ll play badminton now!’’ you hissed and pulled him up.

,,Do you even know how to play?’’ he asked you and chuckled as you led him outside.

However, he caught it perfectly and played back.

It was funny. He was good which was something you didn’t expect from him.

And so the game went way too long until he accidentally hit you in your stomach with the ball, making you fall back.

At first he laughed, thinking that it was funny, but when he noticed that you didn’t stand up anymore he became worried and quickly approached you, calling you by your name.

now my answers to your questions: 1. You said you had exams coming, what do you study? this one is a little hard to explain, so hopefully you understand. i'm currently writing an exam that's supposed to be kind of a "prelude" to university. the subjects i'm doing are math, physics and computer science, and i intend to do something along those lines in university (although i'm not sure what yet...)

2. What's your MBTI and enneagram? i'm an istp, and my enneagram is 5w6!

3. I assume Victor is your bias, is it? Better phrasing it, who is your MLQC bias and why? oh, my bias is definitely victor, although i liked lucien the most at first. i actually disliked victor the most at the start because i just couldn't stand how everything he said seemed to turn into an insult (and well, mc isn't very good at giving him a taste of his own medicine), but when i started doing his dates apart from the main storyline of the game, he definitely became my favorite. his personality seemed much more endearing and comfortable. all the guys are really unique in mlqc, as compared to other otome games i've played, but victor really stuck with me the most.

So good to see you again! My week was utter crap, but I'm a week away from 10 days of no work, so all good! I think I got the gist of what you're doing right now, yes, and all of those subjects sound super interesting. I remember having this subject in college called Logic Applied to Linguistics (I'm a linguistics major) and being super hard, so you have to be super smart to get into any of those fields. As a forever Theory of the Big Bang fan, I secretly hope you get in Physics, it sounds really interesting. As for ideas, I love trivia, fun facts, unknown cultures, etc. I love working with them and using them as metaphors. If you have something you'd like to share, go ahead. I love it! Ok, now to your questions:

Ha, again, I'm lazy and I don't watch or do any sport besides hiking. Sometimes, I play tennis and badminton with my kids because they are both players and I want to keep them motivated. But that's pretty much it.

Buy a house by the ocean and write to my heart's content. I could say traveling, buying fancy cars, yada yada, but what I really want to do is to write. And that's it. I'm easy to please.

First, thank you so much. Now, advice... Immersion. Read and watch and listen to as much Japanese as you can. If you can get a learning buddy to practice and speak Japanese to daily, the better. The more you listen and speak, the faster you learn. Don't limit it to school hours.

5. are you a morning or a night person?

Morning person. I wake up naturally early and if I sleep in (like ten am, for example, which is not incredibly late) I get frustrated because it feels like I missed half of the day. Although I work pretty well after 10 pm (when the house is quiet). But writing, for example, flows way better in the morning.

I'm super stoked about the next chapters as well, and looking forward to reactions. I'm releasing the next one tomorrow and a chapter of the Keeper's Journal by Wednesday (with juicy info). These next chapters are super important for the story, because they tie up the theory and make it more understandable (while I have been basically hinting so far) so I hope I do them justice. And once again, my characters took me down a path I seriously wasn't expecting, but I must respect their wishes, so things took a small turn. Let's see what comes out of it! At first glance, people often think I’m mean bcs I have really think eyebrows and I have a resting b face. However once you get to know me, I’m pretty fun. My hobbies are gaming, baking and editing. I’m the chill friend in the whole group. I am very very laidback, in fact I can be a little too laidback at times but it’s nothing bad, I know when too loosen up and when to get serious, hence this is why I’m often (almost every time) a leader. I’m quite the procrastinator and the last minute person but I always know what I’m doing so its all good. I’m confident in what I do and I stand strong for what I believe in. Words, will not hurt me unless it’s said by directed to an insecurity of mine. I hate losing. I’m that one competitive friend that hates losing but I never go too much yk. I’m pretty chill when it comes to competition, that meaning, I don’t show how competitive I am. I have a blank face as I’m competing with others. I always strive to win even if it means winning in a ridiculous way, however I won’t drag it too much as I hate when a small problem gets really really big bcs people keep making it big although it’s just a minor problem (I’m so sorry if you don’t understand T^T). I’m kind, polite and pretty mature but not too mature as I don’t want my adolescent to go to waste. Therefore I try my best to loosen and up and relax! If I were to go on an outing with my friends and they’re being noisy and loud in public, instead of telling them to quiet down, I’ll leave them there so I don’t get embarrassed 🗿. I hate creating a scene in public. I’m not a fan of popularity unless it’s for a good cause. Therefore, I’m a private person with around 15 people in my circle and I enjoy it this way :) I’m also very passionate in what I do.

I’m very ambitious and my hogwarts house is syltherin. I know what I’m doing as for now and I love to plan ahead so it won’t be chaotic. I’m 100% a leader and my personality is very dominant. However when it comes to relationships, I’m 100% the submissive (or switch? I’m not sure) one bcs I am very shy to actually initiate anything. My preference in a partner is someone who’s dominant and he wouldn’t mind losing for me. If I were to be an animal, I’d be a wolf or a tiger but as for my partner, I’d like him to be a wolf or a lion but deep down he’s just a bear 🥰. I also prefer guys who aren’t loud, like quiet guys but not too quiet. Ones who talk when they need to, as I’m not rly fond of people who talk a lot a lot. It can be quite annoying and I’ll probably end up accidentally hurting them.

Bumblebees - 1,364 words

There’s prints in the dust when I look at the stairs behind me. Little splodges of red amongst the grey where logic dictates it should be the other way around. I can understand how the place got this way - the last dweller died in the Second World War and nobody’s been interested in buying the house since it was dubbed haunted. And even then, I doubt there was much footfall in the first place given how plush the carpet feels beneath my boots.

“Charlie?” Sinead calls from downstairs. Her torch light swoops across the banister, causing spider leg shadows to race across my feet. Her voice has a slight tinge of trepidation to it.

I hold my breath.

I know it’s wrong. And that I should call back out. But, the thing is, I’ve noticed, ever since I joined the campus film society, that Sinead is... well, a gale force wind packed into five feet of nineteen year old girl.

She’s flawless. Short blonde hair always pulled back into a tight ponytail to give her blue-eyed glare maximum strength. Her coursework is always a solid 2:1 but she never enters the library at 2am. She has one other commitment to badminton but otherwise, her mind is sold on making films.

We may be the same age but where I bumble through life she gleams with accomplishment. She’s a director, the youngest the society’s ever had and when she has a vision, she’ll produce it. Strong commands, certain decisions. When she’s in charge, I can’t help but follow. So this, a nervous Sinead? It’s tantalising. And it’s simply out of morbid curiosity that I switch off my torch and tip toe around the corner.

Crouching beside the wall, I listen to the steps creak.

“Charlie?” Sinead calls again. The circle light of her torch is shaking. I wait one more moment, watch her overcome the final step. Then, I pounce.

Sinead lets out a scream. She spins around to face me but my hands clasp around her arm too quickly and when she pulls back, I go flying. With a hollow thunk I slam face first into the banister.

“What the hell!?” Sinead shrieks.

I let out a groan, holding my nose. It’s very, very hot.

“Ow.” I say, despite the impact being a good ten seconds earlier. Sinead stares open mouthed. When her eyes meet mine they go wide.

“Why would you do that!?” She cries, slapping my arm like she doesn’t know it’s cradling a very sore nose.

“I could say the same to you.” I mumble, checking for blood. It doesn’t feel wet.

“You brewed the bottle.” She scoffs, casting her torch back over the hall. “Can’t be surprised when the medicine tastes bitter.”

I tut, only because I don’t have a good enough come back. Did I mention Sinead is smart? Well, she’s very smart. Accomplished, smart and way stronger than you’d think. A triple threat.

I tap at my nose, checking for breakages, before I switch on my torch once again and follow Sinead. She’s poking around one of the doors, tugging gently at the fallen floral wallpaper.

I peer over her shoulder. “We going in?”

Sinead physically jumps at the words. Unfortunately, my nose is in prime location. As she jumps, her shoulder crashes into my face and once again my nose is assaulted with pain. I let out a yelp. It feels like a blast of lava to the face.

“Mother-!” I bury my nose in my hands. “Have you got it out for me or something!?”

Sinead has the decency to look genuinely horrified.

“Don’t get so close!” She cries. I can’t help but feel she’s missing a word.

“Just go ahead.” I grunt, stepping back and nodding to the door. This time my nose is definitely bleeding. I can’t risk getting blood all over my face so shrug out of my shirt sleeve and use it as a sponge. Spurt quelled, I enter.

The room is a mess. When I push the door, it doesn’t move far, bin bags filled with something I won’t look too hard into are blocking the way. There’s a bed at the centre, half covered with a mattress that’s spilled on the floor. A vanity sits to the left, covered in dead leaves courtesy of the broken window above it, and a bedside lamp sits to the right, shade caked in dirt.

“Hey,” Sinead calls from just behind the door. “Check this out!”

She’s moving strangely. Left to right, wiggling her shoulders in some sort of cultish dance.

“You possessed or something?” I ask, staying wide of her shoulder as I come around.

“Would I tell you if I was?”

“Fair point.”

Coming to a stop, I see what Sinead is talking about. Standing in front of her is a mirror. It’s balanced on a rusting frame giving it a permanent 30 degree angle and it’s surface is dull, like someone’s forgotten to remove the protective film.

“Look.” Sinead says, doing her strange dance again, leaning left and right from the hip.

“Yeah?” I’m looking, but I sense that I’m not seeing. Sinead stops to fix me with a look.

“It’s copying the wrong way.”

She waves her hand and then I notice, it’s the wrong one waving back.

“Oh man!” My eyes widen. I cock my head to the left and the mirror image drops to the right. “Freaky.”

Sinead laughs. “You really didn’t notice?”

I nod vaguely, mirror me doing the same but holding the opposite arm to its face.

“You’re a dim one, Charlie.”

“Hey!” I cry. And then, because I panic, I say, “maybe I’m not as informed in mirrors as you because I’m not looking in them all the time!”

It’s a cheap shot. And clearly doesn’t land as Sinead rolls her eyes. But then, she tilts her head back. Wears a smirk.

“When you look this good, how can you not?”

Her eyebrows flick, and with how the mirror is set, I realise she’s smirking right at me. Its mischievous. And playful. Eyes sparkling with mirth, lips teasing cheeks. I hold my breath again, because my stomach rolls. Sinead is smart. And funny. And really, really cute.

“Let’s do it.” She announces suddenly.

“What!?”

“Take the mirror.” She peers around the back, giving me a second to readjust the bloody shirt around my blush.

“Yes!” I say, copying her like the reflection in the mirror. That’s what we’re here for. Props. And cool things. Not flirting.

“You take that side, I’ll-“ Sinead cuts herself off. “Crap.”

She’s looking right at me and I can’t seem to remember how to speak.

“Crap?” I repeat, sticking out my chin as if it completes the question. It’s strange how just a simple look can make a person so flustered.

“Your nose.” She’s says, gesturing to my half-dressed, bleeding, lost pup state.

The sparkling in my stomach comes to an abrupt halt. I am a mess. A little boy with a nose bleed trying to scare a pretty girl. The little excited sparks seem ridiculous now. I see that I’m just a bumblebee, buzzing around a flower that’s already been carried off by the wind.

I shrug, ducking my head to hide my disappointment. “I can still carry-“

“I’m sorry.”

I look up but it’s Sinead’s turn to hide her face.

“I should have said it earlier. I can be a little quick, to you know, strike back when I’m...”

She doesn’t finish the sentence, instead clears her throat.

“Sorry.” She says, giving me a firm look in the eye. It’s underpinned with that same determination she has when making a film and somehow, it melts away any lingering sting.

“It’s okay.” I say, feeling the bubbles in my tummy once more. “You had a fair point.”

I move to pick up the mirror but she grabs my hand.

“Don’t worry.” She says, gleam in her eye. “I’ve got this.”

And, with a monumental heave only ever seen in cartoons, Sinead, the five foot tall woman, lifts the entire floor-length mirror up onto her shoulder and stands proud, barely breaking a sweat.

“Let’s get this to the van.”
