From Warner Bros Pictures
Presents
A Classic Spooktacular 👻 & Creepy😱 Fun Filled Movie 🎥 Of 1988
In Winter River, Connecticut, Barbara and Adam Maitland decide to spend their vacation decorating their idyllic country home.
As they are driving home from a trip to town, Barbara swerves to avoid a dog, and the car plunges into the river.
After returning home, she and Adam notice they now lack reflections and find a Handbook for the Recently Deceased.
THEY JUST REALIZED THEY ARE DEAD 💀😱👻
AND ARE NOT AMONGST THE LIVING ANYMORE
The house is sold, and the new owners, the Deetz family, arrive from New York City.
Charles Deetz is a former real estate developer; his second wife, Delia, is a self-proclaimed sculptor and his teenage goth daughter, Lydia, from his first marriage, is an aspiring photographer.
Under the guidance of interior designer Otho, the family transforms the house into a new-wave work of postmodern art.
Consulting the Handbook, the Maitlands travel to an otherworldly waiting room populated by other distressed souls, where they discover the afterlife is structured according to a complex bureaucracy involving vouchers and caseworkers.
The Maitlands' caseworker, Juno, tells them they must remain in the house for the next 125 years on pain of a dire fate.
If they want the Deetzes out of the house, it is up to the Maitlands to scare them away.
Adam and Barbara are invisible to Charles and Delia, but Lydia can see the ghost couple and befriends them.
Against Juno's advice, the Maitlands contact the miscreant BEETLEJUICE, Juno's former assistant and a now freelance "BIO-EXORCIST", to scare the Deetzes away.
BUT LITTLE DO THEY KNOW
THIS WAS A BIG MISTAKE
TO SUMMON THE GHOSTLY GHOUL 👻 OF EXORCISM
ALL YOU GOT TO DO
IS SAY HIS NAME 3 TIMES
& PREPARE FOR THE PARTY OF THE AFTERLIFE

Podcasts Recs With Siblings
This is going to be a rec list of the podcasts I’ve listened to with sibling relationships. They are categorized as “siblings in the main cast or as an important part of the show”, “siblings as a minor part of the show”, “siblings but one of them is dead”, and “siblings but one of them is dead complicated”. I love sibling relationships in fiction so much.
The Hidden People - Mackenna and Thomas Thorne. Siblings in the main cast and as an important part of the show. They are very different, but that does not make them not important to each other. Thomas is the ‘golden boy’ and was the favorite child, but he’s a fantastic character (and I love him dearly). Mac always felt very disconnected from her family and left out. Thomas never felt that Mac was not his sister even when it was revealed she was a changeling. The pair grow closer with the events of the show. I love them, and their relationship is my favorite part of my current relisten.
The Sheridan Tapes - Anna and Kate Sheridan. Siblings in the main cast and as an important part of the show (moreso in season 2). Siblings but one of them (Anna) is dead complicated. Kate gets so much damn character development, and I adore her. Anna is more of a main character screen-time-wise, but her content is mostly from the past while Kate becomes a main character / recurring character in the ongoing story.
Welcome To Night Vale - Cecil and Abby Palmer. Cecil and Steve Carlsberg (brother-in-law). Cecil and Cal (alternate universe brother). Siblings as a minor part of the show. Cecil’s relationship with Steve evolves beyond the blind hatred he feels at the start of the show to something more complex. His relationship with Abby is less explored, but what we’ve heard about it and their relationship to their mother is very interesting. Cecil and Cal get one episode, and it is really good, honestly one of my favorite in the show. They do not have a great relationship.
The Penumbra (Junoverse) - Juno and Benzaiten Steel. Siblings as a minor part of the show. Siblings but one of them (Benten) is dead. Mentioned very early on, but only explored in depth for one (fantastic) episode. Benten is dead at the start of the show, and that has obviously messed Juno up a lil’ bit. A lot a bit.
The Magnus Archives - Tim and Danny Stoker. Siblings as a minor part of the show. Siblings but one of them (Danny) is dead. While an important part of Tim’s backstory, this is not something that is mentioned until mid-way through season 3, and we only get a good idea of their relationship in one episode. Danny does not appear in podcast. However, if you want to be incredibly emotionally invested in the two of them, may I recommend “Head In The Lion’s Mouth” by renwhit?
A Voice From Darkness - Malcolm and Amelia Ryder.  Siblings as a minor part of the show. So far, I am certainly intrigued by their relationship; they clearly respect each other but Amelia does not always approve of Malcolm’s actions. It is something I think they will explore more more as the show goes on, but if I’m honest, I did not remember Amelia’s name and had to look it up.
Inexplicables [Patreon Exclusive Show] - Meredith and Harold. Siblings in the main cast and as an important part of the show. Meredith gets buckets of character development. Harold... does not. And he is not a likable character (intentionally so!). But it is definitely a fun show in other respects, and their relationship is explored and interesting.

Why Beetlejuice is the Best Tim Burton Movie - 05/06/2020
Beetlejuice is the best Tim Burton movie ever made. Many directors can be said to have developed their own style over the course of their careers, and there is no other director that has a more distinct style than Tim Burton. In only his second feature film, Beetlejuice, which was released in 1988, exhibits and expresses a macabre, grim, and whimsical style that would since become synonymous with Tim Burton. It sets the tone for much of his later work yet to come, such as Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, and Corpse Bride.
The main plot revolves around the couple of Adam and Barbara Maitland, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who within the first 10 minutes of the movie get killed in an auto accident heading over a bridge into a creek and drowning. The newly dead couple soon discover that they now have become ghostly spirits that are forever trapped within their house. When a new couple with a daughter move into their house, they attempt to haunt and scare away the new family. However, the new daughter who is a curious, gothic, and depressive teenager name Lydia, played by Winona Ryder, is the only person able to see the two ghosts. When Adam and Barbara are unable to successfully scare away the family, the plot takes a turn when they seek the help of a ghostly demon: the titular Beetlejuice, played wonderfully by Michael Keaton.
Throughout the course of the movie, we are treated to a visual and creative feast of set design, stop-motion effects, and Oscar-winning make-up. For a movie with macabre subject matter, you would think it would be a mostly dark and grim affair, but it’s the vivid colors used that really stand out to me. Tim Burton would later become known for having a much darker and gothic looking color pallet in his films, but the Director actually has his cinematographer make wonderful use of color in a number of his films, and Beetlejuice is one of the best examples of this. Most notably when Adam and Barbara take a trip to the afterlife waiting room, in which a comparison and contrast to the real-world DMV is ever present. It’s nothing but endless waiting, but in a much more colorful and vibrant setting. This similar color technique to establish setting would also later be used in Corpse Bride, where the afterlife is shown to be much more colorful and vibrant than the dreary normal life on Earth.
The Oscar-winning make-up of Beetlejuice shines its brightest in the afterlife, with the various deceased characters making up the waiting room. The man with the bone stuck in his neck must be one of my personal favorites. I also really appreciate the visual gag of having dead versions of the audience staring back at themselves in Juno’s office in the background, while Adam and Barbara are in the foreground of the shot. The exact make-up work I really believe won Beetlejuice the Oscar though is the stunning creature design of Adam and Barbara when in the film they later don their monstrous visages in order to better scare the family out of their house. They are two looks you certainly won’t forget after having seen this movie and are truly inspired.
One of the most distinct elements of the film has also got to be the engaging and creative score by Danny Elfman, who would go on to become a longtime collaborator with Tim Burton. Tim Burton would make it a habit of reworking with people that he has a great professional relationship with, most notably with Johnny Depp. The initial theme playing over the opening credits really sets the mood for the rollercoaster of a movie you are about to watch. Individual eerie elements are also added into to score to help set the mood for certain scenes, and they do a great job of transitioning the mood and tone for each subsequent scene.
It also cannot go without mentioning the brilliant use of the Banana Boat (Day-O) song, by Harry Belafonte, in the truly out of left-field and amazingly iconic scene where the two ghosts possess Lydia’s parents and dinner guests in another failed effort to scare everyone out of the house. The use of the song is even teased in the opening production company logo of the film. Adam is also seen to be listening to Harry Belafonte music in the attic just after the opening credits. It cannot be overstated just how much the music of Beetlejuice truly breathes life into the film.
The costume design is also inspired, and Beetlejuice himself is eventually adorned in his most iconic look, that of the black and white striped suit that he can be seen in on any poster of the film. Oddly enough, the character only wears the famous suit for just over 3 and a half minutes of screen time throughout the entire movie. In fact, the titular character of Beetlejuice only has about 17 and a half minutes of total screen time throughout the movie, not even making his first appearance until just over halfway through the film. However, when Beetlejuice does make his first appearance, does he ever own the screen and movie.
You can tell that Michael Keaton had an absolute blast playing Beetlejuice, and his fun and enthusiasm shines throughout his performance. It’s reported that he even adlibbed a great deal of his lines, and you can tell that helps increase the flawless comedic elements to his character. The voice Michael Keaton has given to the character is such a great affectation, and it does a perfect job of having Michael Keaton really own the role and make it his own. You cannot show a picture of Beetlejuice to someone, and then not have them instantly think of Michael Keaton and the voice he gives to the character.
The movie also possesses an excellent script by Michael McDowell and has some nice and interesting bits littered about. The character of Otho, played by Glenn Shadix, is shown to have an expert knowledge of the supernatural, even correctly knowing about the souls of those in the afterlife becoming civil servants after committing suicide, as the audience has previously seen when Adam and Barbara took their trip to the afterlife waiting room. The character of Delia, played exquisitely by Catherine O’Hara, also exclaims, “Do you think I want to die like this?!,” after having one of her sculptures encompassing and trapping her earlier in the film, which is a nice bit of foreshadowing towards the climax of the film.
What really sets Beetlejuice apart from other Tim Burton films is its originality, and the screenplay is a truly unique piece of scriptwriting showcasing what it means for two characters to die, and to have their afterlife get harder and not easier than when they were alive. It has its own unique vision and story, which is something that is lacking in most major Hollywood films that are made today. Many of Tim Burton’s later works would be adaptations from preexisting properties, but Beetlejuice was a completely original concept from script to screen, and as such, Tim Burton would have more of a say and representation of his own vision towards the overall final product.
If you look at the career of many directors, you will find that some of their best and most unique work are the early films that they make during a time when they are more driven by creativity and having a message that they need to say and represent through their art. Tim Burton is no exception to this, having what I consider to be his best films made during this period. Among them are Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and of course, Beetlejuice. If you include The Nightmare Before Christmas, which was directed by Henry Selick and not Tim Burton himself, but completely his story and characters, then there is no doubt that this period was the best creative output of his career.
Later works of Burton would mostly be adaptations of previous works, but with studios just wanting to add that Tim Burton style that was so well done in his early work. This was done successfully in the very first Batman films that were directed by Burton. The character of Batman and the setting of the dark and gritty city of Gotham created a perfect marriage of a preexisting creative property and Tim Burton’s style. It was only with the turn of the Millennium that this method of having Tim Burton add his own flair to a property would become hit or miss.
Tim Burton adaptations of Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would prove to be critical and creative misses for Burton. Other films such as Big Fish, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and the underrated Dark Shadows film adaptation would prove to be films that produced better results of adding that particular Tim Burton style to a film. However, it is mostly a rare occasion when we get to see a new and mostly original Tim Burton film, and that is a shame, because that’s when he is truly capable of creating some absolutely memorable pieces of cinematic beauty.
The legacy of Tim Burton will always be mostly defined by those early and unique films of his. The most defining of which will always be Beetlejuice. It will always be the film most people will think of first when you mention the name of Tim Burton. While it may not be the best technically made and acted movie by Tim Burton, it will always be the best “Tim Burton” movie, since Tim Burton has become a movie genre all unto himself, and Beetlejuice is the defining movie of that genre.

Presentation 3 Pairings List
Last month was a bit of a disappointment. I certainly hope that you monkey’s can pull it together for something entertaining for this month. Seemed like a lot of you focused on scene week a lot more than your presentations, a choice I certainly hope you won’t make again. but what do I care if you all end up slaves? I’d love to rent a few of you to mow my lawn with your teeth like my own little mowing goats.
Please read the OOC notes, rules have been added

Partners will present in front of the headmasters in the performing arts center at their allotted times. Please do not go longer than 25 minutes. New students, please make sure you know your limits and have plans for aftercare. Partners are non-negotiable. Presentations are mandatory. Name listed first is Dominant, second is submissive.
OOC Information:
Please post your chatzy/para with the tag presentation3.
Basically, you’re doing a scene in front of Sue and Will, who will be grading you and awarding up to 100 points. Please keep them short and focus more on what can be seen and heard rather than on inner thoughts. If you have a gif or picture that sums up the set up, feel free to use that instead of writing out all the set up. Grades/points are based on creativity, communication, degree of difficulty (also depends on individuals experience level), demonstration of D/s skills and safety.
Please remember!!!! Sue and Will grade the interaction between the two students, not the scene’s concept. So, while giving use the head cannon of what the scene entails is important, it’s much more important to tell us how the student did, what they said and how they were acting.
NEW RULE: For all headcannons, please include at least four lines of dialog during the “meat” of the scene. We need to see how they are communicating and interacting. This is especially important when there is an NPC involved. Rememeber the slaves have all been trained and are rented that week, so they can practice with them in the dungeons if they’d like.
Options:
1. For up to 100 points, you and your partner can chatzy/para out the scene.
2. If, for whatever reason you two cannot get together to write the whole thing out in detail, one person can write the framework of the scene and the other can fill in their characters reactions etc. DO NOT godmod you partner. Communicate.
3. If one writer cannot or doesn’t want to write things out, the other writer may write a scene with an NPC. The NPC would be a slave rented by the school for doing exams. Both writers can take this option, but your max score will be lower. Please keep in mind, we’d like to use this option sparingly, so please do the best you can at communicating with your paired partner first.
4. If the character does show up for presentations, please message the main and let us know. There will be repercussions IC.
5. If you want your character to get points, it needs to be either written out in some way. There is the option that the writer does not have to write something out and nothing will happen IC to your character, however, they also will not receive points.
If you have any questions about presentations or your options for turning them in, please message the main.

Information Gathering | Juno & Axel
alluringmelody:
Her day was almost over. She had just finished her last client of the day, eyes on the rather large tip the gentleman had left her after their session. It sat beside the sink she was using, washing the essential oils free from her hands, sighing softly under her breath while turning knobs to stop the water from running, reaching for a hand towel to dry herself off. She tosses the now damp towel into a small hamper for the housekeepers to collect and wash, snags the wad of bills left as a tip and shoves them into her pocket before she moves out of the room and into the hallway into the employee locker room.
Her day job could be a lot worse, the more she thought about it. Flipping burgers or delivering pizzas. Not many places wanted to hire someone that couldn’t produce a high school diploma. So she cheated with some…well whispered words during her interview. They just HAD to have her. Idle thoughts flooded her mind as she stripped to shower the daily funk of desperate men off her form. But beyond all the people hitting on her mid-massage or slyly attempting to suggest a happy ending, the few regulars she had where she didn’t have to worry about grabby hands or pitched tents made it worth it.
It wasn’t a long process, getting ready to leave. Within fifteen minutes, she’s dry, dressed and walking out of the employee exit. Hair pulled into a messy tail behind her head, clothing just a simple with a pair of blue jeans, tennis shoes, a button up shirt and her jacket. Heaving a small backpack on her shoulder and looping a thumb around the strap that rested on her shoulder, she wasn’t able to take two steps before someone bombarded her personal space. Recoiling instantly, Juno grits her teeth and shoves the junkie away. “I swear to the Gods…, the Gaslight. GO. If you ever come here again, it’ll be your last, understood?” He points a finger at the man as he scampers away out of the alleyway that led to the main street.
Tumblr media
“Pain in my ass…” She trails off, shaking her head softly before she continued on her way, exiting the alleyway herself and turning on a heel down the sidewalk. The sun was setting. Good. Maybe she could try and get a hold of someone that could explain the nasty rumors she’s heard about Axel taking a beating on purpose. She hoped, deep down, that it wasn’t true. It would just lead to more trouble with that bitch, Rayne. She didn’t have the patience for that woman and most people knew it.
Continuing her walk, she turns a corner, swinging the backpack that hung from her shoulder around so she could dig through one of the pockets for her cell phone, eyes going wide at the sudden tip-tap on her shoulder. “What the hell did I just…-” She cuts herself off as she turns wildly, blinking softly at the face that looked back at her. “Oh. Hey…thought you were someone else…”
It had been a long day, and he had barely slept a wink since his conversation with Ryder and Gemma. It was still bizarre knowing her son was in his gang, that it was her son to even begin with. He felt dreadful about it, it was an Axel of the past that had done such a thing, not the Axel of today. Still, the past catches up with you, he should have known that. He should have anticipated this.
Axel spotted Juno as he was exiting a store after having bought himself some tobacco, rolling a cigarette. Placing it between his lips and pausing to light it, he then hurried after her. Any normal person would call out, but the feline need to stalk had him unable to resist as he snuck up on her to tap her shoulder. Stepping back when she swung around.
He scoffed at her surprise, “Were you expectin’ someone else?” Axel remarked with amusement. He had recovered well from his fight, the cuts along his eyebrow and cheek sealed; in a day it’d be gone. His eye had the shadow of the bruise that he had sustained there, but despite that, he seemed in fairly good spirits. He had chosen to focus on work, rather than his fallout with Gemma.
Although even Juno would know this was odd, Axel was hardly the type to just wander like this. So perhaps he was a little distracted, moreso than he cared to admit. Never the less, the sight of Juno heading home proved itself a welcome opportunity, “You in a rush? Or can we swing by the bar on the way out?” He asked her, in desperate need of a drink himself.

!!!INFODUMP!!!
so i’ve created a whole list of wrestler ocs (professional wrestling is my main special interest) for a story i never plan on writing (there isn’t much of a plot, im just designing characters for the hell of it) and i just realized i see a little bit of myself in everyone of them
first there’s my main character, Aeron Juno Jimenez/Quickfrost, who is queer like myself and doesn’t really know what they identify as
then there’s aeron’s sister Valkyrie Hera Jimenez/Slowburn, who represents my sister and how i get along with my sister. we both fight with each other a lot, don’t like the same things, and don’t always like each other, but have each other’s backs in the end
then there’s Rosie McAllister, who represents my feminine side and my Irish ancestry
and there’s MariAnne Lefort, who represents my bitchy side (i’m not putting myself down here, i really am a bitch sometimes)
then there’s Grayson Del Toro, who represents my anger issues and my short temper
and there’s VOID, who represents my asexuality (i’m queer, but i’m an asexual panromantic which means i may not wanna fuck you, but i’ll probably date you)
some other characters who i don’t know which part of me they represent are:
CJ Salvador (based off of a mutual friend)
Bella Belize
Giovanni DeLorenta
Yoshima “Yoshi” el-Dhameed
Estelle James
Esther James (Estelle’s twin sister)
Heather Hyacinth
Li-Fei Huang
Dima the Bolshevik
Vadim the Gopnik
Ash Cott-Amal
Wesley Finn Garrett (who represents my Scottish and British ancestries and my masculine side)
Ryder Michelle
Infodump Session
Alright, I haven’t done one of these in a little bit, and there’s a few more of you now. Last time I had a lot of fun reading your responses and I learned a ton, so let’s do this again!
Infodump either in the replies or in a reblog. It can be about anything you want. Hyperfixations, special interests, rants, conspiracy theories, random trains of thought, absolutely anything. You can talk for as long as you want about anything you want. The only rule? You can’t apologize for any of it. If you get off topic, don’t delete it, don’t apologize for it, just let it go.
I’ll be reading anything you guys send in in its entirety and I’ll reply to all of them. Feel free to read and reply to others as well! Nothing but love and listening so everybody can be heard.

THIS IS WAR
For many years, Camp Half Blood has been a place of peace. Besides the occasional monster kills outside the borders, there hasn’t been an all out battle... until now. As far as the demigods know, there is an army of monsters unlike any they’ve seen before coming to camp. Chiron is absolutely confident they can’t cross the borders, and he’s right. But with such a huge congregation of monsters waiting for a battle outside their borders, the demigods will have no choice but to engage. Otherwise, there will never be a way out.
What the demigods don’t know is... this battle was orchestrated by Lyssa, the spirit of mad rage and Maniae, daimones/Goddess of madness, insanity and crazed frenzy that feel neglected by the camp because of no representation or worship. They don’t want to kill the demigod race. No, they want attention from them. But they were still able to convince a congregation of demons and monsters that they want to massacre the entire camp. The monsters believe they are going into war to win but these ancient spirits of rage will make sure no demigod dies. Instead, they will take them as prisoner.
This event technically spans TWO weeks. One week will be the fighting (that ICly only lasts a day) and the other will be the aftermath of the battle when the prisoners are trapped in the dungeon and the survivors are mourning the “deaths” of their comrades (this ICly does last a week.)
Dates:
May 10th - 14th: 1st part, The Battle
May 15th - 19th: 2nd part, The Mourning
May 20th: The War Council meeting (Important to event plot. Post meeting announcement by Chiron will be posted for those who didn’t attend.)
May 21st: The Prisoners return home (event ends)
*** SIGN UP REQUIRED. Please see ‘read more’ for details and directions..
How does this happen?
The campers will watch their fellow half bloods “die” in front of them in battle. These perishing demigods will feel as if their life is slipping away from them and they will appear to be gravely injured. However, this is nothing but a trick by Dolus and Apate, two other spirits committed to Lyssa’s cause. As a monster strikes to kill, the Maniae will disintegrate weapons or stop strikes before they happen. (They will only stop strikes that they know will lead to mortal peril.)
Apate will create the extremely realistic illusions that make it seem as though the demigods were hit and mortally wounded. When the surrounding demigods are distracted, Dolus will then magically transport each of the “dead” demigods to an unknown location where they will be confined to Lyssa’s dungeon for an undetermined amount of time. When the spirits feel they have enough demigods as prisoners, they will fill the remaining monsters with cold fear, causing them to flee and end the battle.
For a week, the leftover campers will be left to mourn their losses and question how the bodies of their fellow campers disappeared... until such a time that the spirits finally contact camp with a deal: promise to build us shrines, or you’ll never get your loved ones back.
How do I participate?
Sign up as CAMP BOUND, SURVIVOR or PRISONER.
- Camp Bound: Medics, provision suppliers and those too young or afraid to battle that will stay inside the camp borders safely to tend to the incoming wounded and help the fighters with supplies as much as possible for the 1st part of the event . They will mourn their “fallen” warriors for the 2nd part of the event before given the camp is informed by the spirits that they have them as prisoners.
- Survivors: Demigods who fought in the battle and were able to avoid mortal peril and get taken by Dolus for the 1st part of the event. They will mourn their “fallen” comrades for the 2nd part of the event before given the camp is informed by the spirits that they have them as prisoners.
- Prisoners: Demigods who almost got killed outside the borders as fighters or if they were doing something else (like taking injured inside the borders or bringing supplies to the fighters) during the 1st part of the event. They might have avoided the mortal hit or they might not have and truly died but, before either could happen, Apate created the illusion that they died and Dolus took them away to Lyssa’s dungeon. They will feel as if they are dying in the moment that the illusion happens and pass out. Any other demigod who witnessed this will presume them dead but the moment that the others are distracted, Dolus will make their body disappear. These demigods will spend the 2nd part of the event in Lyssa’s dungeon. They, therefore, CAN’T attend the War Council meeting on the 20th.
- Lyssa’s Dungeon: It’s a cramped quarters of just two rooms: one for everyone to sleep and live in for the week and another for tiny one for the bathroom (one toilet, one sink.) There are only a handful of blankets for them to use and nothing more. Prison food will be brought in twice a day. Demigod powers are weaker in this dungeon, the prison bars are immune to powers and there is no way out. The Maniae are guarding the prison.

For many of us the May long weekend signifies the unofficial beginning of summer. Summer – with its warm days and long nights, gathering with family and friends to enjoy good eats, fine weather and the great outdoors.
Q the music…
CBC Music and Live Nation had a recipe for success when they teamed up at Ontario Place’s RBC Echo Beach in Toronto on Saturday May 27th, to kick off the start of summer (and Festival season) with the CBC Music Festival.
CBC Music Fest: Scott Helman. May 2017. Photo by Dale Sinclair
This 1 day festival was packed with land and water activities (SUP, kayak), food and beverage vendors, a VR tent, a scavenger hunt and showcased 20 Canadian artists performing across 4 stages for 9 solid hours.
And perform they did, for large and small crowds alike – including an impromptu gig by Scott Hellman in the commons with an intimate gathering of lucky fans. There really was something for everyone to enjoy, as was proven by the number of families in attendance. The fact that kids under 12 were admitted for free wasn’t just a brilliant marketing maneuver.

The Kid Zone had a wide range of activities for the little people, including a Rock N’ Roll Hair Salon and Tattoo Parlour (of the washable variety), an instrument petting zoo, as well as their own stage shows – hosted by CBC Studio K’s ‘Cottonball’. The area in front of the Kid’s stage became very crowded in the hour before Walk Off The Earth swung by to hang out for a Q&A session. Many in attendance wondering “What kind of instruments do you play?” “What’s your favourite song?” and “Who’s your favourite Super Hero?” to which each member of this down to earth group took turns answering. Before leaving the stage, they left their indelible mark on one tiny fan when they all agreed to sign her ukulele.
CBC Music Fest: The Beaches. May 2017. Photo by Dale Sinclair
The first act to grace the Main Stage was an all-girl indie rock band called The Beaches, appropriately named for the Toronto neighbourhood they hail from. The smallish crowd that had gathered against the security fence surrounding the stage started growing from their very first electrified notes. Don’t let the idea of girl band confuse you, this wasn’t a Spice Girls performance; their sound was more Blondie meets The Runaways. Comprised of vocalist & bassist Jordan Miller, guitarist Kylie Miller, keyboardist Leandra Earl and Eliza Enman-McDaniel on the drums, these chicks know how to Rock N’ Roll and they brought it loud and hard! Performing a couple cover songs in between their own hits like “Little Pieces” and “Give it Up”, which is gaining radio play. This quartet quickly set the bar high for the rest of the day, and I’m sure gained more than a few new fans, myself included.
A wander past the food trucks and assorted market vendors was up next. It was a good thing too, because you couldn’t get near them later in the day. A sampling of pulpo, duck tacos, and curry fries filled the gap, washed down with a refreshing sudsy beverage. One nice thing about Echo Beach is that that the entire grounds are licensed, so attendees could wander from stage to stage with a can in hand, able to enjoy the music in person instead of relegated to far corner tent.
Needs sated, I detected a rhythmic hum filling the air, seeming to beckon me closer and drawing me in. It worked as I found myself standing outside the Tent Stage, catching a part of the Birds of Bellwoods set. These four young men from Toronto know how to bend the strings! Chris Blades on the electric guitar, Adrian Morningstar on the acoustic guitar, Steve Joffe on the Mandolin and Kintaro Akiyama on the upright bass (think cello). Their harmonies were smooth and I found myself wishing that I’d caught more than their last few songs. Definitely watch out for these up and coming talented musicians!
CBC Music Fest: William Prince. May 2017. Photo by Dale Sinclair
Back at the Main Stage we were treated to the stylings of William Prince. A phenomenal singer, songwriter, and storyteller, there’s a reason he was nominated for Aboriginal Artist of the year and won Juno for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year in 2017. His thought provoking lyrics and soft baritone voice were hauntingly beautiful. As people lounged on blankets around the stage soaking in the folk-country musical tales that were being sung, it seemed metaphorical of the ease with which William interacted with the gathered crowd, relating history and personal stories between songs. It’s hard to understand how we’ve not heard more from this Winnipeg native, but there is no doubt that we will be treated to future performances. In fact you can catch him for free at the NAC in Ottawa on July 13th at 6pm. Head to their website to secure free tickets.
CBC Music Fest: BROS. May 2017. Photo by Dale Sinclair
I didn’t want to miss BROS over on the Q Stage, and arrived just in time to catch their introduction. You may know them from a little group called The Sheepdogs, however if that’s what you were hoping to hear, then you might have been disappointed…. but not really. Ewan and Shamus Currie added a brass ensemble to their keyboard and guitar and turned the funk WAY UP. An initial gathering of mainly classic rock fans exploded into an all ages dance-athon. From the tiny toddler wigglin’ his way into inadvertent splits, to the would-be Willie Nelson, and every type of stripe in-between, BROS got the crowd moving, grooving and loving what they were offering up. And when they broke news of the passing of Gregg Allman and dedicated a song, it only put pause on the festive spirit out of reverential respect.

Heading back to the Main Stage where I would ultimately end up the rest of the evening; the upcoming entertainers being part of the draw, the massive growing crowd being the other. Staking out a spot close to the stage would have required a lawn chair, a bottomless bladder and an unwillingness to enjoy any other artist since The Beaches took the stage hours before. Scott Helman was up next, and the squeals of teen and tween girls rose as he began his set with a little ‘PDA’. Relegated to standing on a small strip of pavement leaning against the VIP area, we were entertained by many of Scott’s familiar radio tunes, including: ‘That Sweater’, ‘Kinda Komplicated’ and ‘21 days’ – my personal fave, but that’s likely more a result of it being a song about zombies, and love, or maybe zombie love… but I digress. Whether he’s of the school of thought that “no press is bad press”, or he was experiencing overwhelming excitement, the crowd responded with amusement when he strangely exclaimed “Keep stealing my music!” Then realization set in, and he recovered with …. “or pay for it, if you want!” Scott’s genuine love and appreciation of his family was particularly evident when he enthusiastically exclaimed “That’s my Grandpa!” as one of many video cameras covering the event panned to a shot of a very proud looking patriarch grinning ear to ear, projected upon the side stage big screens. Scott ended his set with the catchy tune ‘Bungalow’ which brought more than half of the attendees to their feet, dancing and applauding.
CBC Music Fest: Ruth B. May 2017. Photo by Dale Sinclair
I made the unfortunate decision to get food before Ruth B took the stage. However as mentioned previously this would become a futile exercise which resulted in missing most of her set. Hungry and dejected I gave up my quest and returned just in time to catch her original song ‘Lost Boy’ which was thoroughly enjoyable.
CBC Music Fest: Walk Off The Earth. May 2017. Photo by Dale Sinclair
Up next was the day’s first headliner, Walk Off The Earth. By this point the sun had started its descent in the western sky and Echo Beach lived up to its name. The crowd’s thunderous greeting of the band’s arrival on stage was only the beginning of one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Gathered with Whirley Tubes, and bells (and a back-up band) they opened the set with a recognizable YouTube cover of Adele’s ‘Hello’. They had the entire park on their feet from the moment they stepped on stage. Gianni, Sarah, Marshall, Joel and Mike Taylor aka Beard Guy, brought high energy and familiar tunes, of both original songs and covers, and were flawless in harmony and execution. Covering Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of you’ and Pharrell Williams ‘Happy’, the audience certainly was as we moved and danced along. They also delighted with a number of originals such as ‘Gang of Rhythm’, ‘Fire in my Soul’ and ‘Home we’ll go’ – a song written while on the road about missing Canada.
When the band asked for a song suggestion someone in the crowd yelled out ‘Queen’, to which Beard Guy agreed to play Bohemian Rhapsody on the piano as long as the audience sang along. It’s a good minute and a half into the song before I realized the other band members have disappeared from the stage, as myself and the other karaoke Kings and Queens in attendance belt out the lyrics. The rest of the band returned in time for the head banging guitar solo, and we all continued to jam out like it was one big backyard party. The night wouldn’t have been complete without a 5 peeps 1 (modified) guitar setup, and again the group delivered, playing Goyte’s ‘Someone that I used to know’, and morphing into snippets of a variety of familiar covers, including ‘Twist & Shout’. With beach balls flying through the air, the palpable feeling of inclusion, the pyro and glitter, the on stage Ninja fight during the ‘Tae kwon do’ song, the entire show was brilliant from beginning to end. As fireworks exploded overhead signifying the end of the set, WOTE walked off the stage and into the hearts of all in attendance.
CBC Music Fest: Serena Ryder. May 2017. Photo by Dale Sinclair
Most of the families with young children headed out before the final act, but a couple of young girls camped out next to me told me they had waited all day to see their idol. Six time Juno award winner Serena Ryder took the stage and owned it for the remainder of the night. Opening with Stompa and like an implanted suggestion, the crowd got moving. The stage filled with lights and smoke, three guitarists including herself, drums, keyboard and two backup singers, she engaged the audience with her jazzy pop hit Electric Love. We were also treated to a song from her brand new Album ‘Utopia’ released just the day before. She returned to more familiar tunes such as ‘What I wouldn’t do’ before slowing the pace a little with a few songs like ‘Baby Come Back’ and ‘All for love’, which had the crowd swaying in unison. An intimate acoustic setting was created on a portion of the Main stage, complete with side table and night lamp, for which she asks the audience’s permission to continue. (Yes please! Do we mind?!) Serena’s song writing prowess speaks for itself, but to combine her powerful voice which conveys such emotion with gut wrenching lyrics can actually make one ‘Weak in the knees’; the performance of which had the crowd serenading her. Every phone in park swaying high overhead in her honour.
All in all the end of the night came too soon. So many Juno and various other award winners, many new up and coming acts, what an amazing way to showcase Canadian talent in a setting that is family friendly and that invites inclusion and participation. There were many other artists I didn’t get a chance to check out, but that gives me an excuse to return next year. I was blown away by the whole experience and would urge anyone that has any interest in music to check out the show. In fact you can catch highlights from the day, in a 1 hour special broadcast on CBC on Canada Day. For more information visit CBC Music Festival online
