Wow, interesting! So the thing is that several of the most recent polls have included what are called zero-width joiner (ZWJ) emoji. These emoji actually consist of multiple characters: a couple of regular emoji (either single characters or other types of sequence) and a special character in between called a zero-width joiner, which tells the computer to display the sequence as one combined image if possible. If the viewer's device doesn't support the combined character (probably from not having an emoji font that includes it) they'll display separately (with the ZWJ itself being invisible), therefore allowing the viewer to see roughly what the emoji was supposed to be even if it can't display as intended! ZWJs and other types of sequences also allow different variants of emoji to be displayed without taking up a whole codepoint with each individual version -- emoji such as national flags and all of the gender and skin tone variants of the people emoji are handled using sequences!

Anyway, the latest handful of rounds have included ZWJ emoji introduced in the Emoji 13.1 update in September 2020 and Emoji 12.1 from October 2019. These were too new to have been included in the usage statistics I used to seed my bracket, so I stuck them in in one big block (next to the new characters from those years, which are coming up soon, but all together because I realized I'd forgotten them and needed to fit them in). I'm curious whether you'll be able to see those? Maybe you'll be able to see the 12.0 ones from earlier in 2019? Do these ones display for you: 🦦🧇🩺?

I made my poll bracket using emoji up through Emoji 14.0 (from September 2021), the second-to-most-recent update, because I knew that the most recent ones still weren't rolled out for a lot of people, but now I'm wondering if anyone else is having trouble seeing the newer included ones?

If you're on the computer and want to see newer emoji, you can install a new emoji font to get the newer ones! Google Noto Color Emoji (linked below) and its black and white version (likewise) are both up to date through Emoji 15.0, and there are other options like JoyPixels which are updated through 14.0 (the latest update included in the tournament) if you prefer them! It's possible to do this on a smartphone, too, but it usually has to be rooted or jailbroken, so that might be a barrier.
