" she'd intended to go for stern and dry, but she wasn't sure it came off as anything more than her just sulking now. " if you're going to just sit and crack jokes, then maybe I'll just go and be laid back and breezy by myself ! "

His   face   contorts;   eyes   squinting,   lips   tugging   into   a   grimace,   brow   furrowing.   It’s   an   act,   he   knows   she   can   see   through   it   —   it’s   not   like   he   is   intentionally   hiding   anything.   Jeff’s   just   intrigued   to   see   how   long   it   will   take   Annie   to   either   snap   or   call   him   out   on   it.   Which   is   basically   one   and   the   same.   “I   don’t   know. . .   Having   sex   outside   is   not   exactly   something   I   find   appealing.   Unless   it’s   really   secluded.   In   that   case,   I   don’t   mind   too   much.   But   I   do   draw   the   line   at   exhibitionism.”

He couldn’t see her missing a class for any reason, let alone illness. “As your Inspector I suggest rest, rations, and relaxation.” He tossed that English accent into his speech to help sell his concern better. It was easier to emote when he wasn’t himself.

This was the kind of thing Annie was usually pretty on top of, and with her fiances --- she really couldn't afford to miss out on the free ones provided by the student union. However, it had coincided with a very big midterm assignment, and she'd been locked into an intense hyper-focus for the whole day. She'd totally spaced and forgot. Annie had tried to compensate. She'd been sanitizing everything, taking so many vitamins, and done everything she'd been able as she tried to find another opportunity. Alas, irony would strike the day she had finally tracked one down --- she'd woken up with a fever. So, she'd resigned herself to emailing classmates for notes, giving her excuses to her professors and snuggling up with her Nana's blanket and feeling sorry for herself.

Her nose had been too congested to smell Abed cooking, and even if she had --- her first instinct would have been that his noodles were his own. She'd learned very quickly he was very specific about these things --- not that Annie had any room to judge. However, when the warm bowl was set in front of her, being offered by Abed as he put on his silly but endearing Inspector Spacetime impression, Annie couldn't help but give a soft smile. She knew him, this was his version of making soup or tea for someone he cared for. " Aww, thanks Abed ! " Her voice was a bit unsteady from her bug, but the heart shone through she hoped. Shifting slightly, giving him room both on the couch but allowing him some distance so she wasn't coughing on him by mistake --- Annie pulled free some of her blanket and patted the couch for him. Although Inspector Spacetime wasn't the easiest thing to follow --- with the amount of cold medicine she had running through her, it'd either be the right amount of brainless for her to relax too, or she'd unlock a new level of understanding.

However, she cut herself off abruptly --- catching the look in his eye and recognizing it for what it was. He was trying to catch them off guard and call them out for what he deemed as overreacting, and that was not something they were going to do so easily. " Pfft, sure that's something --- " Annie countered with a forced blasé tone, " but there's also a whole world out there to do super fun things. So, get your coat on and let's go do something super chill and fun right now. "

Oh   good   grief,   not   the   easy   breezy   cool   cat   Annie   act.   Jeff’s   watching   their   display   of   aloofness,   a   single   eyebrow   quirking   up.   He   could   just   entirely   ignore   it   and   go   back   to   grading   his   papers,   as   boring   as   that   is.   He   could   also   poke   the   bear   and   see   how   far   she’d   go   until   she’d   give   up   on   pretending   to   be   unbothered   by   anything.   Given   their   track   record,   it   shouldn’t   take   too   long.   The   only   question   is,   does   he   want   to   deal   with   the   consequences   of   provoking   her   further.   Lips   purse,   Jeff’s   eyes   skipping   towards   their   bedroom,   leaning   back   in   his   chair.   “D’you   wanna   go   have   sex?   That’s   something   fun   and   easily   done,   right?”

𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐍𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐋𝐘. For a lawyer - Jeff had a horrible poker face. Mainly, it was the sarcastic tone that gave him away. Although, she supposed that it could also be partially because she knew him so well --- regardless, that didn't matter right now. What mattered was the fact that apparently somewhere Annie had become her mother --- which was something that wasn't going to fly. Hell no. Forcing her mouth into a wide smile that didn't meet her eyes, Annie forced herself to slouch a bit. She was going to be the most easy going and non icy person anyone had ever seen or die trying. " No, no it's fiiine, don't worry about it... in fact, you're so right. We should kick back and do something fun. We should do it right now too. "

Though   Jeff’s   face   remains   stoic   and   bemused,   mentally   he’s   rolling   his   eyes.   Now   he   regrets   opening   his   mouth   up   and   letting   that   comment   spill   in   the   first   place.   The   momentary   lapse   of   memory   and   judgment   led   him   to   forget   about   Annie’s   dramatics.   And   they   could   get   ridiculously   dramatic   when   they   were   defensive   over   something.   In   this   instance,   a   trait;   one   that   wasn’t   too   bad   to   begin   with.   From   his   own   personal   experiences,   icing   people   out   had   sometimes   worked   wonders   in   his   favor.   The   inevitable   abandonment   hurt   less.   “Fine,   Annie.   If   you   say   that,   then   I   believe   you.   I   was   wrong,   you   don’t   ice   people   out.”   Perhaps   lying   isn’t   the   best   thing   to   do   in   this   situation,   but   it’s   a   better   alternative   to   watching   Annie   deny   herself   into   a   frenzy.
