What if Penelope always saw the monster Odysseus could become? From the moment they met to the moment they married and she moved to Ithaca and they had Telemachus, it was there... Behind her husband's eyes, in certain lights. She tested it, sometimes. Schemed and poked what it would take to flip that switch. Odysseus never did, too drunk in love and happy before the Trojan war. So Penelope and that Spartan strategist's mind let him go. Let him fulfill his duty as man of the house and a soldier of Greece.

He comes back feral. He comes back deathly quiet after twenty years. And hears the suitors plan to mutilate Telemachus, to rape Penelope as a group. Odysseus snaps, and snaps into place. There's that mental lever Penelope had been looking for. He redefined the Spartan legends that Penelope grew up with. He deserves her for that alone, and she's set up the long game for too damn long to know anything else except being his wife and the mother of their son and the queen of their kingdom. But before him, she was a princess of Sparta.

Penelope, who looked at Odysseus with the same adoration when they got married, to when he returned with his hands caked in the blood of the suitors. Odysseus, who spent a single second and forgot which Spartan he married.
