If there’s one thing about you that Sylus dislikes—a rare feat, considering how much he thinks the world of you—it’s this.

You’re hiding again.

He exhales a measured sigh, gaze fixed on the video feed projected from Mephisto’s surveillance. The camera, angled from a high vantage point outside your apartment window, captures you on your bed, cocooned in a tangle of blankets like some human burrito. The room’s overhead lights are off, the only glow coming from the crow-themed night light he’d bought for you some time ago.

At first glance, it might seem like you’re simply indulging in some well-earned rest—a deserved reprieve from the relentless grind of a hunter’s life. But Sylus knows better. You’ve been like this for days. Occasionally, you surface from your blanket fortress to grab tissues, sneezing or coughing before carelessly tossing the used ones onto the growing pile by your nightstand. Other times, you stumble out of bed, shuffling to the bathroom in a haze, likely to empty a stomach you’ve barely managed to feed.

He pinches the bridge of his nose. What a prideful, stubborn kitten.

Without a word, he grabs his motorcycle keys, slinging on his jacket with practiced ease before heading out the door.

Time to stop by at the supermarket.

I still mask because the vast majority of my friends under the age of 30 who have caught COVID have long COVID, and that's just the young people I know.

I still mask because even if I myself weren't chronically ill and COVID weren't a disease that causes chronic illness in "low-risk" people (which it very much is), I would still care about protecting my chronically ill and disabled friends (and strangers!).

I still mask because you can't always tell by looking at someone whether they're at-risk, and you can still spread disease when you're presymptomatic.

I still mask because chronically ill people shouldn't be discarded no matter what, much less over what is for most people no more an inconvenience than wearing a seatbelt or carrying narcan.

To everyone still masking: I appreciate you; thank you so, so much. Words cannot express how much it means to me that you're keeping it up; whether like me you've been masking this whole time, or whether you've resumed masking after stopping. Thank you for caring and taking action.
