Remembering Dennis O’Neil who passed away 3 years ago today at the age of 81.

Denny O’Neil (May 3, 1939 - June 11, 2020) worked on countless characters for both Marvel and DC (beginning in 1968 with Beware the Creeper #1) with artists from Neal Adams (1941-2022) to Steve Ditko (1927-2015), including updating classic characters, from taking away Wonder Woman’s powers to make her more modern in the 1970s to stripping Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow of his wealth and had him focus on more political plights of the time. One of the most important creators within Batman’s long history, O’Neil brought the Batman back to his Gothic, Golden Age roots after the campy era of the 1960s and the wildly popular Adam West television series. Alongside artists like Adams and Dick Giordano, O'Neil introduced new characters into the Dark Knight's mythos, such as Ra’s al Ghul (1971’s Batman #232), Talia al Ghul (1971’s Detective Comics #411), Leslie Thompkins and the term 'Crime Alley' (1976’s Detective Comics #457), and Jean-Paul Valley aka Azrael (1992’s Batman: Sword of Azrael). O'Neil in the 70s also reinvented rogues like Two-Face (1971’s Batman #234) and Joker in the now iconic tale "The Joker's Five Way Revenge" (1973’s Batman #251), making the Clown Prince of Crime return to his murderous and chaotic persona that we now see in modern media today. Working on several publications centered around the Caped Crusader and many other icons within American comic books, we will always thank and remember Denny O'Neil for being an incredible part of Batman's 80+ year history.🦇📚🙏🏽
