Why does Francis family treat him the way they do? And the way they do

I’ll start off with Richard here because this asshole of a father is mostly responsible for the way Francis is today. One day, I plan to go into detail on Richard’s backstory in a different post because it’s a whole different story itself as it explains why Richard became the abusive asshole he is and why he treated his family the way he did. But for now, I’ll focus on the reasons why he hurt Francis:

He had been abused as a child like Francis did: believe it or not, Richard did try to be a parent to Francis when Mary got pregnant. Even though he didn’t want Francis and told Mary to get an abortion, Mary wanted to keep her baby. Reluctantly, he caved in. But since he doesn’t know the proper way to raise a child and show his love towards him, Richard got frustrated and repeated what his father did to him onto Francis. When Francis was a child, Richard couldn’t stand how Francis was crying and making a mess on the walls and table. He always blows up on Francis on the most trivial things which is what his father also did to him. Basically Richard’s repeating the cycle of abuse.

His aggressive nature, trauma and mental illness: as you already know, Richard isn’t an easy person to be around. It’s not just because of his own trauma from being abused or what he had gone through during the war, it’s his nature to be aggressive. He developed PTSD, BPD and IED after what he had gone through. He hasn’t undergone therapy since mental health isn’t recognised during the early 1900s. Richard knew they’d lock him up in the asylum if he ever seek help. He didn’t want to go through what his mother did. So he left his mental illnesses go unchecked. And of course, it’s a huge problem, especially for Francis. Due to poorly Richard coped with his mental illnesses with his own vices (drinking bootlegged alcohol and smoking), he takes it out on either Francis or Mary during one of his episodes. Being around Richard is a ticking time bomb for Francis. He’ll never know when his father is gonna blow up on him or not. Richard definitely isn’t fit to be a father!

Untold resentment: Richard definitely hold a lot of resentment for his son for all the wrong reasons. One reason is that he sees Francis as an extension of himself. I don’t mean that he sees Francis as a trophy. I mean all the qualities Richard hates about himself. He projects all of his self-loathing, failures and trauma onto Francis. He sees himself as a victim of some sort and he’s punishing Francis for it. In a way, Richard is punishing himself but he uses Francis as an outlet for it. That’s why you can always hear him say, “You’ll understand if you put yourself in my shoes one day,” or “If it were up to me, I’d dump you in the battlefield so I won’t have to hear your incessant baby whining all day!” Another reason why Richard resents Francis is as you can already tell, he’s the son he never wished for. Not just because he accidentally got Mary pregnant one night, it’s because he wanted a child with an old lover of his. His old flame was the woman he truly loved all this time. But due to circumstances that weren’t in his favour, he was never meant to be with his love. And once Francis came into the picture, he thinks about the child he could’ve had with his old flame instead of Mary. Basically all Francis was to Richard is a burden and a painful reminder that he couldn’t get his old lover back. Until the day he died, Richard is still longing for his true love and the life he could’ve had with her.

Now, I’ll move onto Mary.

If you’ve read all of the lore or the fanfic I wrote, Mary is a good mother to Francis. Unlike Richard who doesn’t give a flying fuck about his son, Mary did everything she can to take care of Francis and make his life happy whenever she could. With how her husband acts towards him, Mary would always protect Francis and take on the abuse from Richard. While she can only do so much to protect Francis, at least she put in the effort.

Unfortunately, Mary did contribute to the why Francis became a serial killer. Years after years of taking Richard’s abuse made Mary go insane. As a result, she mentally broke and the trauma of her husband’s abuse made her terrified of him. And since Francis takes after Richard in terms of his appearance, Mary begins to have hallucinations and thought Richard and Francis were one person and they’re out to get her, which is why she threw a kettle of boiling hot water at Francis out of self defence. The last thing she did before she died was hurt Francis, and her insults impacted him for the rest of his life.

Mary also caught pneumonia when Francis was 17. Due to her fragile mental state and illness, she shut herself off from the entire world, inadvertently neglecting him and leaving him to grow up faster at a young age. While Mary did love her son with all her heart, she couldn’t be a proper mother to him in the end. I’m her defence, it wasn’t her fault. Richard was the one who broke her but she ended up hurting Francis during her final moments.

Long story short, none of Francis’s parents are 100% good people. Richard is obviously the worst out of the two because of the reasons I stated above. He hates his own son. Full stop.

Mary is the better parent here. She loves her son more than anything but unfortunately she ended up traumatising him for the rest of his life. It’s more of a morally grey type of situation with Mary where she’s a loving mother to Francis and protects him from Richard. But unintentionally hurts Francis after suffering a lot herself.

In the end, what they both did to Francis doesn’t justify their actions but gives you an explanation why they did it to him.

on a separate but related note, i wanna point out that part of chiyo’s journey is supposed to be finding love. it’s that thing of loving someone else is easier than loving herself, but in that love, she grows. she learns to not be so hard on herself. she learns that where she sees an ugly, overgrown garden, others see flourishing flowers. now!! that isn’t to say that platonic and familial love isn’t super important — it is!! so very much!! that’s why i want to try and build up the people around her so that i can think about how those relationships help her grow too. if not for them, chiyo would be so much worse off. there’s a lot about herself that she would always hide and stress about if not for her friends and family. she would hide away from the world itself if not for them.

but i just wanted to explain why sometimes i focus so much on romance as a concept with chiyo. i mean, i do just really enjoy shipping bc of the build up of that relationship. the development and journey is very rewarding bc it isn’t a smooth ride with chiyo 90% of the time. but pls know you are never obligated to ship with me, nor do i go in thinking you will automatically want to ship together. if i feel chemistry? yeah i may eventually say something or test the waters with a meme. but just as there’s no pressure if you want to ship, there’s no pressure if you don’t want to ship. i’m excited to write together no matter the kind of dynamic we decide on 💜

THE PSYCHOSIS RECORDS.

" suffers heavy symptoms of schizophrenia , sharing in hallucinations of five male boyfriends. each with a different name , and appearance. she also shows symptoms of PTSD that she has had for roughly fourteen years now , suffering from her childhood when she experienced hearing gun - shots for the first time. she doesn't remember the rest of that night.

REHAB RESULTS.

Lucy Quinnzel has been with us for roughly one year , and in all her turns talking she spoke well about her addictions to drugs , and she mentioned her grand goals in life , she has always been charitable , and honest , however this last day on Halloween , she didn't show up for annual meetings, and then she stopped coming completely. leaving us early autumn. she had since returned , but with relapses.

THERAPY SESSIONS.

all therapy sessions have been successful , with all diagnoses revealing her PTSD, schizophrenia, and minor traits of depression. she has convided in the therapist DR. Wellington about her stay at home and how she hated having to move in with her aunt. about her struggles in school and about her failing jobs. she talked about her childhood and about all the moments she doesn't remember. namely one incident in which she remembers hearing a gunshot.

i have a question)) what do Richard and Mary think about Nacha and Anastacha?

//For starters, Richard and Mary are both dead as of the game’s timeline (iykyk) so they never got the chance to meet Nacha and Ana in person.

But if they both get to meet their daughter-in-law and granddaughter, they’d both have different feelings towards them.

For Mary, she’d be ABSOLUTELY delighted to meet Nacha and Ana. Mary thinks Nacha is a sweet woman who treats her son well since as we all now, she wants her son to be happy after what Richard put them through. It makes her so happy that her son got married to a kind, beautiful woman and have a nice daughter together. She’s also glad that Nacha is such a good wife to Francis, with how sweet she is towards him and how she cooks the best meals as a bonus too.. She’d definitely get along with Nacha and they’d especially bond over cooking.

Mary: Oh Nacha! I’m so thankful that my boy has such a kind woman like you in his life. How’re things going along with him?

Nacha: aww Mary, we’re doing just great! He’s such a sweet guy around me. And he’s been doing his best as a father too. But he only shows his nice side around me. The rest is a different story though. He’s also really clingy and he gets jealous a lot of the time. I have to admit, sometimes it’s cute but other times uh… it’s troublesome. But we’re doing just fine. He’s such a good husband and a father. And I’m so grateful that I have him in my life.

Mary: I’m so happy to hear that. Make sure you take care of my little Francis and Ana now, alright? I hope you both treat each other well.

Mary also likes to spend time with Ana too. Even though she doesn’t understand her granddaughter’s indifferent nature, she’d make an effort to connect with her. Don’t worry, Ana likes her grandma back. Mary would gift her some handmade toys and clothes or go out somewhere fun like the park or get her ice cream like she did with Francis when they were young.

Richard on the other hand, doesn’t have a high opinion of Nacha. In fact, he thinks she’s just some “happy go lucky broad that his son got comfy with”. Though I believe his opinion on his daughter in law comes from a place of jealousy. Perhaps he sees his first loving relationship through Francis and Nacha’s, but that’s a story for a different time.

He also think Ana is some “annoying snot nosed little brat” who’s an extension of his son. But maybe that’s also jealousy talking.

I don’t think he’d be the type to get along with them because come on. It’s Richard we’re talking about. He’d rather be in a different room to avoid them. But if he’s feeling cranky and audacious enough, he’d likely mock his son and their relationship in front of them.

Richard: in all seriousness, what in the ever loving fuck do you see in that kid?

Nacha: oh come on! You’re the adult here Mr Mosses! Shouldn’t you be happy that your son found happiness?

Ana: yeah! Why don’t you go back to your retirement home and leave me, my dad and my mom alone instead of being a sad bitter old man or whatever?

Richard: *profoundly triggered*

Nacha: *caught off guard* Ana! Where did you learn to speak like that?!

That’s ok. Nacha and Ana hate him back.
