[A few days later...]
"Hey, Urs... Are you feeling alright? You've seemed kind of off since the other day."
"It's nothing. I just thought I saw someone following me when I was on my way home from the Turf War lobby."
"Ugh, that's so creepy. If it happens again, let me know okay? I'll make sure whoever it was stops."
"Thank you for your concern, but--"
[Suddenly, there's a knock at their door. Ursula gets up to answer it, looking through the eyehole on the door... And immediately takes a few steps back, eyes wide and heart pounding.]
「N-No... It can't be...」
「Ursula? What's wrong?」
「It's my... my parents...」
「What? Really?」
[Kori gently moves between Ursula and the door and looks through the eyehole. Sure enough, there are two older Octolings standing outside -- a woman with hot pink tentacles and a beautiful face, and a man with blue rings spotting his deep purple tentacles. She can definitely see the resemblance between them and Ursula. Her voice then lowers to a whisper.]
「Okay... Okay. Let's just. Not answer it. Maybe they'll leave if they think we're not home.」
[She then moves to lead the terrified Ursula to her bedroom.. Until their door is literally kicked open.]
「Hey! The hell do you think you're doing?!」
[The two ignore Kori completely, their focus on Ursula as they approach her.]
「So this is where you've been.」
[Ursula nervously nods.]
「And your brother?」
[Ursula remains silent, much to the ire of her father. He forcefully grabs her, digging his venomous claws into her arm.]
「Answer me when I'm talking to you, traitor!」
[He slaps Ursula across the face hard, before pushing her to the floor.]
"U-Ursula!"
「Now tell me where your brother is.」
「I... I haven't seen him since I last visited Inkopolis.」
「And where exactly did you see him?」
「Like that's any of your--」
[Ursula shakes her head at Kori, effectively silencing the yellow Octoling before she hangs her head a little.]
「There's... a sweets shop he frequents, near the plaza...」
「Good girl.」
[Ursula's mother then gestures for her husband to follow her out the door, only looking back to give Ursula a wicked smile.]
「Don't get too comfortable. Once we've given him his just desserts, we're coming back for you.」
[Ursula's parents exit the apartment, leaving Ursula and Kori stunned in their wake. After a moment, Ursula shakily stands up and makes her way to the table where she left her cell phone.]
"Wait, you're father's a blue-ringed, right? We need to get you to a hospital!"
"I'll be fine. But I... I need to warn my brother..."
#‖ ♥︎ 》 This turned out way longer than I intended but I had no idea how to split it up so...#‖ ♥︎ 》 But on another note: Ursula has a very high tolerance for blue-ringed venom due to having said venom herself#【✏️】✦✧✦【musings】#【📖】✦✧✦【arc: of traitors and family】#【📚】✦✧✦【URSULA】#【📚】✦✧✦【musing】#【👤】✦✧✦【NPC】#【👤】✦✧✦【KORI】#【👤】✦✧✦【SUSANO】#【👤】✦✧✦【TSUKUYO】

3 & 20 📚
hiiiiiii so I actually had a mini essay all typed out for this and tumblr decided to eat it up, which means that it took me a hot second to type it all again 🥹
3. What were your top five books of the year?
Tied for first place, it'll have to be Ursula K. Le Guin's Space Crone, and Jane Austen's Persuasion. Both were deeply impactful for me and had me sobbing like a child, and I couldn't choose between them with a gun to my head.
Space Crone dug its claws into me from the first and titular essay, and Le Guin's writing was utterly fascinating - incisive, reflective and yet so kind. She's got such a sharp voice, and I could read and reread her articles and essays and learn something new everytime. Seeing her inquiries into aging, gender and societal issues evolve throughout the years was so special, and I particularly loved that she was fearless about changing and revising her opinions. I can't thank @missmungoe enough for the rec, because it was life-altering literature.
Persuasion was a book I had been waiting to read and I think this year was precisely the right time for it. From the characterisation, to the social commentary, to the slow journey of Anne finally allowing herself to see the world and be seen by those around her in return, Persuasion had me in a chokehold. I get inordinately emotional while thinking about it, especially in the context of when it was written in Austen's life, and I don't think I'll ever recover from The Letter.
Second to them was This is How You Lose the Time War, by Max Gladstone and Amal El-Mohtar. You have to understand - I love my SF with a hearty dose of worldbuilding and my enemies-to-lovers romances as smaller pieces set in a wide, wide world. This book has neither, and yet I fell deeply in love with it. The letters between Red and Blue are so honest, the candour between them fucking heart-melting. The ending had me sobbing, and this truly was the year of love letters for me!!
After that, it's Joanna Glenn's All my Mothers, which took its time charming me, but once it did, I was a goner. It was such an interesting meditation on motherhood and identity, and incredibly complex relationships between women. The story was also deeply anchored in its locations, and I was left with an incredibly strong urge to visit Córdoba - love for that city was pouring off the page, and it's strange to be half-in-love with a place you've never seen before but alas!!! Also, this was an audiobook for me, so please picture me having an emotional menty b in the vegetable aisle at the shops. fun times!
Now it all gets a bit muddy because I am shite at picking only five things at once and leaving out any of these books feels plain wrong, as they each scratched a very different itch in my brain:
Daniel Keynes' Flowers for Algernon came out of left field for me, bc I read it a decade ago and hated it to bits, only to find it ridiculosuly compelling on my reread this year. My book club had a deliciously in-depth discussion about it, and it was so refreshing to find that I can not only change my mind, but also find new things to appreciate in unlikely places.
Both of Heather Fawcett's Emily Wilde books were an utter delight - they left me giggling like a loon, and the characters charmed my socks off. The visuals were so lovely that my fingers were itching to pick up a pen and draw (which is rare and wonderful for me) - I haven't gotten to that yet, but they're always in the back of my mind, so I can only hope inspiration will be kind to me soon! Maybe when I reread them this winter hmmm
Finally (this time for real), I need to yell a second about Emily Wilson's Odyssey, because it was captivanting and gorgeous and I rotate verses and images from it in my head far too much for it to be healthy. It was so lovely to revisit my childhood love of Greek myths, but this time with the real deal! Can't wait to get my hands on her Illiad as well, hopefully next year!
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
So I haven't been following that many series recently?? But the only release I'd been waiting for was Mimi Matthews' new Belles of London installment, and The Lily of Ludgate Hill was everything I hoped it would be! I love this romance series, they are incredibly lovely and comforting, and strongly rooted in that time period. There's a delicious amount of historical research that goes into establishing the world and the way the heroines occupy it. The books follow a group of friends who are all on the outskirts of polite society, for various reasons - they're all distinctive and fun and their respective romances are delightful. I can only say, Bridgerton wishes it was this series, and I'm always up for a reread. I think the final book in the series will come out soon and I can't wait to read it hehe
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to ramble about books I loved !! And sorry for taking so long to get to it ahh 🫶

it’s the yearly books post 📚 i read 52 this year (so nice and even!) which is a 6% increase from last year’s 49. although it doesn’t really show on this list, the overarching theme turned out to be a bunch of shorter stuff (graphic novels and novellas). here’s what we’ve got:
best fiction: winner is still a stranger in olondria by sofia samatar. 3 runners up = the spear cuts through water by simon jimenez, the actual star by monica byrne, and the name of the rose by umberto eco
best series: also extremely obviously, foreigner by c. j. cherryh, despite the fact that i’m less than halfway through. made me realize the true meaning of the word “blorbo.” the three-body problem series by cixin liu gets an honorable mention just because it ate my brain for a while.
best nonfiction: the wounded storyteller by arthur w. frank, with the faraway nearby by rebecca solnit as the runner-up. i read a lot of bad and mediocre nonfiction for professional development reasons and am excited to not do that next year!
worst book: i also read lessons in chemistry by bonnie garmus for work purposes. the reason for this verdict can be encapsulated in the fact that the protag’s hair is described as being the color of “burnt buttered toast.” what does it mean
books read aloud with friends: (new category bc i realized it would be fun to capture these, and many are rereads so i don’t include them in my total count.) part of the dispossessed by ursula k. le guin, a tree grows in brooklyn by betty smith, tarashana by rachel neumeier, and the unknown shore by patrick o’brian + all of tuck everlasting by natalie babbitt and the age of innocence by edith wharton + also a christmas carol by charles dickens, but that’s a Yearly Event so i won’t note it down again.
#yearly reading retrospective#i’m pulling the trigger now bc i’m simply not finishing the iliad this year. too many things in the next 2 weeks#that last list is insane actually. what else are you gonna do when you talk on the phone w long-distance friends all the time i guess

A Year in (Book) Review: My 2024 Reading Journey 📚
#33 - Part of Your World by Liz Braswell
Fantasy / Twisted Tales #5 / 482 pages / published 2018 / Finished Mar. 20
One Sentence Review: A much-matured Ariel takes charge in this Twisted Tale filled with magic, deception, romance, revolution, and very large, very real stakes - dark and rich, this book expands on the worlds above and below the sea in a wonderful way.
Favorite Quotes
"'There is magic,' she said softly. 'There is always magic. Even if you can't see it.'"
*
"All right, all right. Octopuses are great. I'm a bigot with tentacle issues."
*
"So little actual communication was represented by words that were said aloud, she had realized upon losing her voice. Often the real meaning lay underneath and unspoken."
*
"She had the voice of the wind and the storm and the crash of the waves and the ancient speech of the whale. She had the voice of the moon as it glided serenity across the sky and the stars as they danced behind. She had the voice of the wind between the stars that mortals never heard, that rushed and blew and ushered in the beginning and end of time."
My rating: 4/5
A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers):
Though there is a lot to love about this book - the expanded world, the character growth, Eric as the "Mad Prince" - the pacing was slower than I expected. I did really enjoy the way Ariel and Eric's relationship developed.
The dynamic between Eric and Ursula was quite bizarre, though this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I found myself most surprised by the dynamic between them after the enchantment over him broke, the sort of stalemate and "silent revolution" that followed. Ursula's characterization as a vain, out-of-control and madly violent but still calovulating villain was interesting.
This book shows thay a true, good leader is one who puts her people first, who does not compromise for her own personal desires. It also illustrates that just because someone isn't speaking out loud - or they cannot speak - it does not mean they have nothing to say. Pay attention and listen.

book asks: 3, 23, 25 📚
3. What were your top five books of the year? [in no particular order]
A Power Unbound - Freya Marske Network Effect - Martha Wells The Tombs of Atuan - Ursula K. LeGuin A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel - K.J. Charles When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain - Nghi Vo
23. What’s the fastest time it took you to read a book?
Honestly, my reading pattern is often: read little to nothing during the work week and then devour 1 to 2 books over my weekend. There are plenty of books that I devoured in a single day this year...
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
I don't have any set goals in particular! As a general one, I guess my goal is to continue just reading things I enjoy and not being afraid to set things aside if it's not the right time or I'm not having fun with them.

For the “Top 5” ask meme:
Top 5 fiction books
Top 5 nonfiction books
😊📚
fiction (this list could be so much longer):
the last of the sky pirates, by paul stewart and chris riddell. an all-time favourite.
earthsea, by ursula k. le guin. exactly as good as everyone says it is.
the game of kings, by dorothy dunnett. this is my 'currently reading' fave, and it's brilliant
the adventures of alianore audley, by brian wainwright. james bond meets edward iv. sidesplittingly funny
dissolution, by c. j. sansom. i'm not sure yet if it's the best book of the series, but it is the first book, so i'll leave it at that
non fiction:
latin alive: the survival of latin in english and the romance languages, by joseph b. solodow. it sounds incredibly dry but i assure you, it's very insightful
english after rp, by geoff lindsey. a comprehensive breakdown of how standard southern british english sounds, and why conventional descriptions are outdated
henry viii's last victim, by jessie childs. not infallible, but enjoyable for me, personally
tudor england: a history, by lucy wooding. a less tiresome overview of tudor england than usual
what if? by randall munroe. fun nonsense with real science
(link)
#asks#i will be honest#i am not a massive non fiction book reader#it tends to be articles these days#fiction is much more my domain#but latin alive is unironically great#(i read it in horribly formatted pdf form)
