WRITTEN BY KATHERINE DIAZ VILLEGAS
I don’t remember my beginning with books, but that may have been because they’ve simply just always been a part of me. I do, however, remember my many trips to the library where I would run around pulling out any and every book that piqued my interest until the stacks threatened to fall over. It wasn’t a need to escape that lead me to books, but my curiosity.
Books are so special because through words, an author can paint any realm, person or thing into existence. Storytelling has been the traditional method of passing down history and legends since the beginning, through cave drawings to sharing tales around a fire to hieroglyphics. Once stories passed on by word-of-mouth were officially transcribed, they soon became one of the most prized possessions one could own. Books have always had the responsibility to pass on information and ideas. With them, human beings have been able to learn, grow and create.
Film enthusiasts may argue that human beings need visualization to understand a story, but I disagree. The bond a reader has with a book is one of the most transcendent relationships one could ever have. No matter how words and phrases are written and arranged, not everyone will interpret them the same way. Though the story is written the same, each reader is different and will be affected by that story in an unparalleled way. Just because the author writes the sky is blue or that the valley was vast, how a reader visualizes or connects with that small bit of context creates a world of its own. Understanding the thoughts of a character and their reasoning behind it creates a genuine bond — one that is responsible for bringing so many beloved characters to life.
A book’s limits go as far as the reader’s imagination. No matter the genre, books awaken the brain in a way that pushes us to understand and imagine for ourselves. As the protagonist and characters grow, so does the reader.
In films, which are only possible with the effort of countless people and departments, the story only lasts an hour or two. Even in series, there’s still a certain type of limitation regarding time. Whenever films are adapted from books, more likely than not, you’ll enjoy reading the book even more than seeing the film. This is because there are more details and context in books. There’s no budget or post-production, producers or actors — there’s only the author, the story and the reader. Stripping away rules and opinions leads to the possibility to dream and create.
I’ve read well over a 1,000 books and never thought I would have a favorite until I stumbled upon “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern. To me, this book was the puzzle that I never knew I needed to solve. It pushed what I had expected from novels and stories to a rich dream, interlacing past and present with a parade of characters each too extraordinary to not be known.
Books today are not a tool of the past, they’re ever-evolving. They will forever be a sort of dependency we’ll have. Like history, books are survivors that will live another day to tell their tale.

Written by Mikael Trench
Films, historically speaking, are still very young forms of storytelling, with the first films ever made released during the 19th century. It’s easy to see why this art form is looked down upon by so many compared to books. Growing up, older generations warned us about the dangers of too much screen time. Equally likely is the chance your elders recommend to read instead. While literature has its perks, filmmaking is the superior storytelling medium.
What makes the art of filmmaking more admirable is the act of restraint. Books can tell any story featuring any ideas the author can imagine. While this gives books a distinct sense of escapism, films must be more inventive. Since films create fantastic scenes with budgetary limitations, filmmakers must find ways to balance these elements. From “Mary Poppins”(1964) to “Avatar” (2009), there’s bound to be a few films you admire for their ability to create mesmerizing illusions. The ability for filmmakers to work through these difficulties allows for an even greater appreciation of this craft.
Films can throw whatever visuals they want at us, but if the storytelling itself is no good, then there’s little to care about. What makes films stronger in this area is the variety of ways they tell their stories. Books allow little room for how they present their worlds other than blatantly putting it on the page for the reader to imagine. While that interpretation does add to the experience, there is still an element of disconnect that can leave some feeling underwhelmed.
From the birth of cinema, silent films always found ways to incorporate traditional literary storytelling techniques in a visual manner that allowed the audience to become far more engrossed in the experience than simply reading words. This not only offered for more enthralling moments to be made, but also for filmmaking to transcend the storytelling mold and become something far more universal. Storytelling in film must be inventive to be effective.
The legendary montage from the first 10 minutes of “Up” (2009) is a breathtaking piece of filmmaking. The animation and musical score visualize the couple’s story better than any words could. Regardless of culture or background, anyone could watch this sequence and comprehend the story while also getting wrapped up in the emotional context. It’s a testament to the craft put into every frame that makes up a film.
Films can achieve greater legacies than the books they are based on. Countless films from “The Shawshank Redemption”(1994) to “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) have surpassed their literary counterparts. These films differ heavily from their books, but no one seems to care. They were crafted with such ingenuity that audiences are more inspired by the big screen adaptations.
Films and books are two different works of art. Both have the power to allow us to escape into worlds we can only imagine. But filmmaking took the essence of storytelling and brought it to new and exciting heights before our very eyes. Whether they make us laugh, cry, scream or think, you can bet that a dedicated team is working their hardest to make those scenes last a lifetime.

He let out a good ‘oof’ when h felt someone bumping into him, arms wrapping around their waist automatically before he realized it was Konani and falling to her hips and then springing them away, aware of his wife and annoyed over it. He let her go, blood thrumming through his veins as his wife asked him about it and he played it off like it was nothing. It was nearly ten minutes later, ten minutes too late, in his opinion, that he was able to walk away from Galina and make his way down the halls, trying to find Konani.
When he finally did find her, alone and sequestered in a locker room, he couldn’t help but slam the door and lock it, smirking at her as he crowded her, pulling her closer by her hips before thoroughly kissing her, biting her lower lip before pulling away.
“What was that about?” He whispers, knowing exactly what and wanting her to admit t it.

The summer air is hot, stifling and he can feel beads of sweat slowly dripping down his body. He’s wearing next to nothing, only very loose shorts resting lightly on his hips, sliding down alongside the drops of sweat due to the temperature. He’s stuck in his office, papers sticking to one another on his desk as he leans against his door, watching the female in front of him. He can feel the handle of the door pressing into his spine as he looks the female’s body up and down, eyebrow arched as his lips curl upwards into a small smirk. The woman in front of him is barely wearing anything herself, but he’s not surprised seeing as he had called her in from working out. She’s been in the same room as him for five minutes, silent and, what he likes to think of as pouting as he lets out a small huff of laughter.
“Lookin’ good, Lynch,” he grins, watching for redness on the enticing woman in front of him.

His eyes widen when he hears the sniffles and then the tears, wondering what could possibly wrong with Becky for her to be crying instead of laughing and smiling like he’s used to seeing her. He didn’t want to play the game, and he knew that Becky probably didn’t want to either, but crying? It left him confused. And when she said it wasn’t him, well, he was thankful, he couldn’t help but sigh in relief, his body relaxing completely.
“Are ya alright?” He ask Becky few seconds later, shifting on the spot as he feels awkward over everything. He doesn’t know if he’s supposed to comfort her or stay still or what, and it causes him to be in limbo, the urge to comfort the female there but the knowledge of whether it’d be accepted, not.
“Do ya, uh, need me to turn ‘round and walk ’way or somethin’?” He asks, stepping forward a little before pausing in his steps and waiting awkwardly for Becky’s response.

He slowly opens his eyes, blinking them for a few moments before looking around, wondering where he was since, while he knew he was in a hotel room, he knew he wasn’t in his hotel room.Roman licks his lips, feeling particularily dry and tries to look around the room without moving his body much since he’s quite comfortable. He notices his clothes spread out throughout the room like they were thrown from various places, and he arches an eyebrow in confusion before taking stock of himself, realizing that yes, he’s naked. A deep breath is released as he continues his look around, noticing some other clothes that aren’t his, and are definitely female but don’t belong to his wife and -- fuck. FUCK. The thought is loud and causes him to widen his eyes, jolting upwards and looking down, heart pounding in his chest as he realizes that his companion is Maryse. Roman licks his lips once more, feeling slightly impressed with himself, because even though he’s tried very hard not to think any thoughts, he’s always found himself attractive to Maryse, even throughout their arguments lately. Unsure of what to do, he lets out another deep sigh and lays back down on the bed, wanting to wrap his arms around the woman and continue their activities from last night, which -- no, Roman --but instead, laid stock still, chewing on the inside of his cheek, waiting for the woman next to him wake up and decide where to go from here.

His eyes open slowly, adjusting to the brightness that comes in from the slots of the blinds against the window. He shifts in his bed, letting out a small yawn and closing his eyes before turning away from the suns rays and colliding into another body. His face frowns in confusion as he blinks open his eyes and looks down in front of him, an eyebrow arching in surprise at the body his arms have subconsciously wrapped around. He recognizes the body, of course, but finds himself even more confused as to why his arms are wrapped around Nattie, especially since they haven’t been together since their fight. Slowly, Roman begins to frown, trying to think back to the previous night and what had happened to have the woman in his bed.

He had woken up slowly, his head pounding and his eyes sore, and he let out a small groan, raising his hands to wipe his face before pausing. Frowning, he opened his eyes slowly and looked at his hand, blinking wearily at the ring on his finger that made him confused.
“The hell,” he mumbles to himself, moving his hand further away from his face and narrowing his eyes, shaking his head lightly before sitting up in the bed, trying to piece through what he last remembered to the current morning, since he hasn’t been married since his divorce.
Except...nothing is coming up, and that scares him. His brow furrows as he tries to think about what happened, jumping out of his skin when he hears the door open.
“The hell,” he mumbles again when he sees Rollins walking out.

He hums softly in response when he hears Alicia’s words, smiling softly when he notices her own smile, heart pounding heavily in his chest. He doesn’t spend a whole lot of time with the woman because of work - even though they work at the same bloody company - and he’s glad to spend any amount of time with this female. And even though this thing between them started as a game, he doesn’t know how, but it’s changed, become something more, and it’s thrilling for him.
He could admit, having the woman in his arms was providing him a comfort he didn’t think he would ever have and he knew he would need to respond soon, but he couldn’t find the words, for once. He doesn’t know for how long he’s remained silent but eventually, he shifts his position a bit and holds onto the woman a little more tightly before kissing the top of her head. “I have no complaints about keeping ya here all night,” he grins, innuendo lacing his words but being very serious about his statement.

For once, he’s nowhere near the strip joint or the auto shop, instead needing a rather large cup of ‘joe (heh) to get through the next few hours with extremely upset sisters. He’s standing in line when he hears the whispers begin, and he has to look around with a frown before noticing one of his old high school friends and beckoning them over.
“The hell?” He whispers, before the phone is pointed in his direction, video of -- he growls here, shaking his head, rolling his eyes and grabbing the phone and throwing it at the cushioned wall, getting the attention of everyone due to the loud ‘thump’ that occurred. Briefly, he notices the female that was center of attention in the room and he smiles softly before glaring.
“Honestly, people. We’re better than that,” he snaps, before walkin’ away, trying to ignore the familiar sight of drugs going into someone’s body, of someone using, of the feeling he used to have when he used, back before his entire life went to hell.

He’s walking his two little sisters to school when he comes upon the man, arching an eyebrow silently. Everyone knows the man, or at least, about the man, about how he disappears, how he never spends his nights alone. Joe, admittedly, doesn’t have anything against the man, especially since he barely knows him, so he nods lightly when he passes him, eyes widening when he hears his sisters ask the one question no one wants to ever be around when asked:
“Why do people always call him a whore?”
“What is a whore?” Joe groans, flaming red before shaking his head and grabbing his sister’s arms and taking them off to the side, smiling apologetically at the older man.

He’s eyeing the two men speculatively before he shrugs off whatever he’s feeling -- (not that he’s feeling anything, honest) -- and turning around, walking the opposite direction of suddenly chummy Seth and Dean. He has a hard time understanding how that happened in the first place, has a hard time understanding the thoughts pouring through his mind at an infinite speed. He tries to ignore the voices he hears throughout the halls, speeding up as he walks towards his locker room before growling at his name being shouted from the opposite end.
“What?” his response comes out as growly as he feels, his eyebrows furrowed and his hands clenching into fists at his side as he notices Rollins walking up to him. A rather large part of him would want to turn around, walk away, not wait for the other man -- (because he always feels like he’s waiting for Rollins, for some inane reason) - but instead he arches an eyebrow, fuming silently as he watches the man stop in front of him.

His lips are pursed as he tries hard not to form a complete smirk. He’s failing, he knows, but it’s been long enough, and today is national kissin’ day. His heart pounds in his chest, a little surprised that he had ended up kissing the younger man, even as a joke (though he doesn’t go kissin’ just anyone for no reason, which everyone knows)
“Haven’t ya heard? It’s national kissin’ day,” he grins, realizing he’s been quiet for way too long now. He doesn’t want the rejection, he knows, which is probably why he did this, but.... it’s still nice, he’ll admit, to feel Seth once again.

The sweat between their two bodies makes everything slippery and as Paul finds himself gripping on the back of Nicole’s neck as he pounds himself inside of her, thrusting continuously as moans break forth from their mouths before he leans forward and takes her. She tastes heavenly, and it’s been too long since he’s seen her. Normally, they wouldn’t even do this, not without waiting for a time that they can break away and spend quality time with one another afterwards but she had come over as a surprise, in something as simple as a fucking trench coat (and hot, so very hot). He hadn’t let either of them get very far before she was bent over his favorite couch and he was pounding her for the life of himself. Of course, they took a quick break before ending up on a table, and then stairs, and finally, in his bed. He was thankful Stephanie was gone for the day, and as he continued to spend time with the woman he loved, he could barely hear the front door open and his name being called over the combined moans of himself and Nicole.

He had wanted it to hurt, had wanted the younger man to feel something for once. Had wanted to see if the other man could even feel. And he had his answer, but for the first time, he  didn’t think he could be proud of what he had seen. Not in Rollins. But in himself. And wasn’t that just hilarious.
“You couldn’ possibly know that,” he says moments later, licking his lips, shaking his head. He’s wondered, of course, but he’ll never know, now. Not when it was Rollins that was chosen.

The moment it came out of his mouth, he wanted to yank the words back in, force them down, swallow them whole and hope she knew for one moment that he didn’t mean them. But the way her lip trembled, her voice quivered, he knew that those words destroyed whatever relationship they had, holding onto the fragile line between them. He couldn’t look away from the mess he had caused, though he wanted to. He finds himself opening and closing his mouth, the shock that was running through him easing before he finally looks away and shakes his head.
“Ya know I don’t,” he whispers, licking his hips as his own eyes water, and he steps forward, the urge to stroke her cheek high. He doesn’t though, doesn’t believe he’s allowed. Doesn’t believe she would want him to. “I’m sorry,” he says, voice breaking.
