is it unromantic to start a letter with the fact that i want to kiss you? because i do. badly. desperately. until my lips are raw and burned red. until i can't stand the pain of it anymore. and even then, i'd still kiss you. over and over and over until i began to crack and bleed. or until my lips went completely numb and i wouldn't be able to taste you on my tongue anymore.

that's my biggest fear. to lose my sense of taste. so that i wouldn't be able to taste you. and the coffee you drink in the morning and your mint toothpaste and the bland flavor of your chapstick. if i wasn't able to taste you anymore, i'm not sure we could make up for it in other ways. you're my favorite, after all. and thinking about it now, when you're not here for me to kiss, is nothing short of torture.

i don't think i can exist another second without kissing you. or touching you. or seeing you. all i can do is close my eyes and picture you and the way my hands would sit on your skin and my lips against your neck. and every time i reach out to grab you, to pull you closer so that i can feel you against me, i'm always grasping at air. i've learned to hate the air. or the solitude. it doesn't feel like you.

do you remember our first kiss? not the one you say is our real first kiss but the actual first one we ever shared. the one at the bar, in front of everyone else who didn't even seem to notice. the one that tasted like gin and shitty soju and you. it was sloppy and drunk. your hand was clutching my sleeve like your life depended on it and i fell off my bar stool trying to kiss you more. it's the kiss that you say was the most unromantic.

i think about it a lot. that kiss. i remember that i sat there after it happened and played it over and over again in my head. trying so hard to remember it when i woke up the next morning with a hangover that nearly killed me. i did remember it. and the feeling of you. but i've replayed it so many times in my head that i've worn the details out. i'd give anything to kiss you again for the first time. to taste you. to hear those pretty sounds you make. i know you don't count it as one of our real kisses. but it's my favorite.

i've been drinking that horrible concoction of gin and soju to try and replicate that kiss. it's not the same. and it makes me miss you. not just your kisses. i miss you. more than anything. more than wanting to kiss you.

about ten's love letters.

ten writes letters in pretty, practiced pose. he takes his time, looping every elongated letter and crossing every t with an elegant swipe of his pen. his words are recklessly chosen, every thought taken straight from his mind and planted directly onto the paper. his letters are intimate and honest, burning you down to your core with every earnestly longing word.

he writes on refined paper, filling pages and margins. he tries to make his notes look as romantic as possible, like the kind they show in movies or the historical dramas you adore ever-so-much. each and every letter is imprinted with a million and one kisses from him (you've watched him do it, slightly irked that he wasn't just kissing you) and sprayed with his cologne. ten often doodles on the envelope and on the back of the paper, silly drawings of you and him or whatever he saw that day that particularly interested him.

he likes it when you read his letters on a call with him. so he can hear every hitch in your breath and that lovesick lilt you have whenever you finish, showering him with affection for each and every sweet word he wrote. though that seems to only make his desperate yearning worse, leading to more letters and more incessant, whiny confessions of love over the phone. though, you wouldn't complain.

this is not this man's first time around some nail polish

natsu used to paint his nails all the time, so he’s so down!

big color inspo from the colors of a classic blue and yellow mikasa volleyball because of his love for the sport (obvi)

howeverrr switching out the yellow for a bit more of an orange hue to go with his hair <3

also!!! some tropical floral designs as an homage to his time in brazil

a super fun vibe for a bright and go-lucky guy :)

when you first take his hand in yours, the tips of his ears start to redden a little bit

like for someone so talkative, he's silent and almost as attentive as you the whole time and he's not even the one doing the work

you also notice he holds his breath every time you make the nail polish make contact with his nails until you finally lift back up CUTIEEE

cups your face when his nails are finally set and dry and you can see his eyes dart between your facial features and his nails contrasting against your skin and his smile gets bigger in real time

definitely goes to every one of his teammates in the msby locker room his next practice to show them the nails

on tvs, cellphones, laptops and countless other kinds of screens everywhere: the camera following the msby jackals' game whips around to land their sights on hinata shōyō.

ten seconds remain on the clock. the jackals are behind their opponents by the most miniscule handful of points. in a last-ditch effort, atsumu's in place, and in a matter of seconds hinata is already high in the air.

the ball is met with a collision from the redhead's hand and quickly surpasses any of the opposition's lines of defense. an abrasive buzzer blares throughout the area and the msby jackals all start to jump onto one another with screams and yells and high fives in celebration.

"another excellent shot by hinata! what a way for the jackals to clutch this game folks!" a commentator excitedly blabbers.

"let's take another look at that one, shall we?" another accompanying commentator beckons.

time slows on screen during the instant replay–from the moment hinata gets in front of the net, to the moment his feet leave the ground, and especially as his arm is reeled back moments before the winning shot.

the camera takes the liberty of zooming in on hinata’s hand then. it captures the precise moment when his purest love and energy for volleyball surges through his body. the unseen electricity has ricocheted throughout him to finally trail up to his fingertips, adorned with colors that showcase the blend of his identity with the same ball his skin almost adoringly caresses for a second in the eyes on the slow-mo cam footage.

blue and yellow, blue and orange side-by-side in front of thousands and millions of eyes to witness as the ninja shōyō’s manicured hand follows through and pushes that volleyball past the net to bring his team to victory.

as babygirl as sakusa kiyoomi is, black’s just really his vibe i think

not on like some emo shit but the black would go really well with not only his hair but his iconic beauty marks above his eye

speaking of his hair, the cyber tribal chrome kind of sitch kinda alludes to his curls :0

i mean to the rest of the world he’s this stoic and serious guy all the time

but they don't see how he looks at you while you paint the finer details on his nails

or the subtle and soft dopey smile he’s got on as he asks you in lovestruck whispers about your technique, how work's going, what materials you use, etc.

"it's to make sure your nails stay nice and strong for whenever you hit your incredible spikes, omi." [you]

"oh, that's definitely important. wouldn't want to skip that." [sakusa] (before you laugh at his little joke and his heart skips a beat and he gives you a quick kiss on the top of your head as you continue to work)

once the nails are finished, he goes to look at them with his fingers clawed–boyishly characteristic of a dude who's never gotten his nails done like this before

you can't help but laugh and he asks what's wrong

"what do you mean i'm looking at them weird?" [sakusa]

"your hands look like when you posed with the msby jackal mascot that one time." [you]

"how else am i supposed to look at them?" [sakusa]

you demonstrate how people normally check out their nails at the salon

and then it delves into a mini hand modeling lesson and many, many, giggles between the two of you as he tries to figure it out

you end up with some new reference pics of his set for any of your future clients, what a supportive boyfriend!

a certain photo is going viral as it makes its rounds online. the photographer who took it had to have known they struck gold capturing this certain moment, and the racking number of likes and comments are only affirmations of that.

it's a professional shot of sakusa kiyoomi mid-game. late-game, actually, as its evident though the state of his appearance in the picture.

visible droplets dot his face and figure, giving his skin and curly hair a certain sheen that proves the dedication he puts into every one of the msby jackals' games. to combat the sweat that's accumulated on himself, it seems like sakusa had absentmindedly reached for the edge of his jersey to act as a substitute for a towel in that particular moment (his expression is clearly focused on nothing but what might've been happening next on the other side of the court net). the muscles that adorn his torso peek out from the action.

and on top of it all–the sweat, the abs, the way the rest of the jersey clings to the rest of his body–the subtle chrome detailing of his nails stand out where his hand tugs the fabric to wipe at the bottom of his face...

and you hadn't even really caught on to this picture online yourself. the only reason you went to look it up for yourself was because of the influx of work emails you had received since the jackals' last win.

the public was vaguely aware you specialized in cosmetics, as sakusa had alluded to now and then in press conferences and interviews. however, it wasn't really until people online started to wonder where your boyfriend got these nails from did google's reverse-image search bring them to the pictures on your profile that you and sakusa took post- his manicure.

to say your clientele grew overnight, would be quite the understatement.

as you're ducked down working, he misses seeing your face

so he cranes his neck and looks up at you from where his hands are

in that position, he loves the feeling of you holding his hands and the sensation of the nail polish brush against the top of his fingers so much, that he semi-falls asleep against his forearm as you wrap up

he just feels so much at peace <3

and when you’re done he is definitely giving ken, and that his job is volleyball

and tbh i hc his hair post timeskip isn’t so much piss yellow as ppl joke it was while he was at inarizaki

but that if he stuck through with keeping it blonde for so long he eventually managed to get it professionally done, and with some GODDAMN TONER 😭

something endearing about your loving atsumu is he never fails to get you the best seats in the arena whenever you come watch the msby jackals play.

from front row, you can see everything, and in so much detail—the action, the sweat, the tears that goes into each and every matchup the team faces. truly, the experience was leagues above settling for a closer look on any big screen or arena jumbotron. everything was just so much clearer!

but most importantly, you can see your boyfriend. very clearly.

so clearly, in fact, that after a particular great serve to bokuto for a spike that earned the jackals yet another point, you have the luxury of soaking in all the glowing details of atsumu in his element.

the way he clutches his strong fists and yells with joy at the small win, a bit of pink peeking out from the insides of his palms.

how his hands clap and grasp at the hands of his teammates in quick celebratory high-fives that leave streaky blurs of pink trailing behind his excited movements.

when his hand quickly drags over his smiling and glistening face, before carding through his hair—small pink detailings disappearing and reappearing amidst the blonde strands that rest on the top of his head.

by the time all the players on the court are settled back into their places for when the moment the ball will be up in the air once again—anticipation pulsing on both sides of the net—you can even catch as atsumu quickly glances at his nails with a small, blink-and-you’d-miss-it smile.

thankfully, your top-tier seat allows you to catch it. and although he’s smiling at his hands, you know that it’s for your work and by extension, it’s all love for you in that split second before your boyfriend has to lock in again.

when the next ball is served, you find yourself almost falling out of your chair from how far you’re leaning forward to take in as much of your great view as possible.

you say the few designs you want to try out and ask him which one you can try on him and he just goes: ALL OF THEM!

(he knows it’ll take longer to do with all the different elements, but that just means he gets to stare at you for longer as you work)

"are you sure? i mean, do you have a color you want in particular? i can tweak them so they all have the same palette." [you]

"nope! cover me with whatever your beautiful mind is envisioning!" [bokuto] (he's jutting his fingers out in front of you and wiggling them around with the biggest grin on his face)

these nails also just fits him as a person because he’s super all over the place and spontaneous so it works it JUST WORKS OK

plus his hair’s literally greyish whitish so it’s like a perfect neutral and blank canvas to accent the color palette

it's one thing having him sit still for an extended amount of time, but having you this close? right in front of him?

how is he not supposed to give your lips a quick kiss now and then

BUT!!! he always goes to double check he didn't mess up the nails every time he pulls back

you can see in the corner of your eye as you work on your designs that bokuto's nose scrunches up now and then

it's because he's not used to the smell of the nail products you're using

upon completing the whole nail set, he concludes it’s legitimately one of THE COOLEST THINGS anyone’s ever fucking done for him

doesn’t stop staring at his hands in a little bit of awe even after you’re done and chilling on the living room couch, completely oblivious to what's going on on the tv in front of you two

the crowd is going absolutely ballistic. the jackals are in the lead. and your boyfriend, the bokuto kōtarō is up and about to serve.

you watch the arena's big teleprompter with the rest of the spectators as the cameras pan to bokuto.

he has that look on his face–confident and happy playing the sport that runs through his veins. his hand crashes down onto the ball once. wham!

twice. blam!

when the ball comes back up, he grips it between his hands. it's evident even through the screen how his arms tense and pulse. it's like he's revving up.

as everyone hangs off the edge of their seats and keep their eyes glued in anticipation to the broadcasting of bokuto holding that unmistakable combo of blue and yellow–it's impossible to ignore how the ends of his hands glint and reflect the bright overhead lights.

colors of all kinds twitch in excitement against the leather and the star player quickly glances down at the ball, sure, but most definitely also at the intricate art you so graciously blessed his nails with. bokuto's lips crack a smile.

then he's tossing the volleyball up. a loud and powerful smack reverberates throughout the arena. in the blink of an eye the ball whizzes past two of the opposite team's players and the crowd explodes once again as the ball is now rolling on the outskirts of the court across the net.

your boyfriend's chest swells with pride, and his carefully manicured finger darts to point over you in the stands. you cheer even louder for him as he beams a tooth-filled smile your way.

When Tom got the initial call from the San Diego Hospital, he panicked. Had something happened to Rachael? Was she hurt? How hurt? His voice wavered as he pressed the green button, “Hell…Hello?” “Hello, is this Thomas Kazansky?”

“This is he. May I ask what this is about?” “I am very sorry to have to tell you this, Mr. Kazansky, but your wife has been in an accident. If you could please come to the hospital as soon as possible that’d be great.” “Of…of course. I’ll be there soon!”

Tom had at least broken ten traffic violations as he drove as fast as he could to the hospital. Once there, he tapped on the front desk, impatient and nervous about what is exactly Rachael’s condition. The nurse smiled, knowing he was scared, “Hello Sir, how can I help you today?”

“Um… ah… my wife, she was in a car accident earlier tonight and I’m here to see h…her.” “And the patient’s name?” “Rachael Kazansky.” He blurted, worry in his voice. “Ah, yes. She’s in room 81422. If she’s not in there, she’s either getting an X-ray or scan done, but your more than welcome to wait in the room while she’s gone.” “Thank you,” Tom uttered under his breath as he ran passed the desk and to the elevators.

In…out…in…out. Tom had so many visions of how badly she’d been hurt, but shook his head, he couldn’t think about that anymore. He clumsily reached for his phone in his pocket, found his number and pressed the call button. It only ran twice before he heard the other man’s voice on the other line, “Hey Ice! What’s up man? You never call this late?”

Tom tried to keep the tremble out of his voice, “It’s…it’s Rachael, Ron. She was in a car accident and she’s in the hospital. Your like family to us, so…” “WHAT? We’re on our way now, you know we’ll always be here for you Tom,” before the line dropped, he could hear Ron tell Jade the news.

He spun the phone in his hand and tightened his grip, taking his frustration out on it. How could he not be there for her? He knew it was impossible for this to be his fault, but put the blame on himself anyway.

Tom sat in the waiting room, head in hands as Ron & Jade rushed through the doors, startling the other occupants. “Where is she? Have you seen her yet? Did they have to take her to surgery?” Tom opened his arms, knowing that Jade would want to hug him. “I know her room number, I just can’t make myself walk in and see her all bruised and beaten.”

Jade smacked the back of Tom’s bleached blond head, “Grow a pair! She’s in there scared to death, waiting for her husband to calm her down and comfort her! Tom, I say this with love. You know I do, but seriously, go be with your wife!” Tom nodded, a little ashamed about his behavior. This isn’t about him, it’s about Rachael, his amazingly strong and confident wife.

He knocked softly on the open door, trying not to startle Rachael as she slept. “Hey Baby, how are you feeling?” Rachael gave a half-asses loopy smile, “I feel like I was hit by a bus.” “Plea…please don’t joke about that. You had me so afraid and nervous when I got the call about you being in a car crash.”

“Tom, babe, I’m fine. The only thing that’s badly hurt is my car. I just got some scraps and bruises, a broken leg, and maybe a concussion. That’s still waiting to be analyzed sense they carted me straight to the X-ray for the leg.” “I’m just glad your ok. I called Ron & Jade too, they’re in the waiting room. Want me to send them in?”

Rachael made grabby hands at her husband, wanting a hug and to be close as possible. “When the truck hit me, I swear I saw my life flash across my eyes. It happened so fast, I was so scared that I’d never see you again.” She whimpered.

“Shh, you’re ok. I’ll always be there for you Rach. I have no choice, remember our vows?” Rachael sniffled a little before a small laugh escaped her, “For better or for worst, through sickness or through health. I’ll always be by your side.”

“Exactly. Do you wanna see Ron & Jade yet?” “Yeah, Jade’s probably throwing a tantrum about not seeing me right now.” “She’s an adult, she wouldn’t.” “If she’s not able to see her chaotic best friend that’s hurt and in the hospital, she would and we both know it.” “Yeah, ok. I’ll go get them. I’ll be right back gorgeous.” He missed her forehead tenderly, before leaving the room.

As Tom entered the waiting room, he saw Ron & Jade holding hands and talking in quiet voices. “Hey, she’s ok. A little busted up, but she’s alive. Rach wants to see you both.” Jade pushed both men out of the way and b-lined it to Rachael’s room.

“Oh my god Rach! You’re ok! I was so worried for you! Tom, that shithead, didn’t tell us anything but that you were in a car accident!” Jade started to cry at the thought of her best friend, the other half of the chaos crew, was hurt. “Oh Jade, don’t cry! I’m ok, really!” “I know, I know! It’s just hard to hear!”

The two women hugged, attached to each other like glue as the men waited right outside the door. “You know that Jade and I are here for you guys right?” “Yea, of course. Rachael and I would be there for you guys too. We’re a family, Ron, thats what they do.”

“Have you called the others? The rest of the squadron would want to know, they care about you guys too.” Tom nodded, “I will tomorrow morning. It’s too late, they need to sleep, I also don’t want to overwhelm Rach with more visitors.”

“Understandable. They can be a lot.” A noise from one of the machines Rachael was connected to grabbed the attention of the nurses nearby, making them rush over.

Jade’s voice sounded above the yelling and beeping, “Help! Please help! I…I don’t know what’s happening!” “Ma’am, please, step aside so we can help her!” That grabbed the men’s attention at the scream of Jade and booked it to the room.

Nurses and doctors crowded the small space and pushed Tom, and their friends out, before the nurses helped the doctors. “Eyes not responding, push 10 milligrams of Diazepam I.M. And get her tested, order a MRI too!” “Anything specific?” “No, all of the test, now!” “Yes sir!” “Right away!”

They wheeled her away to another floor, her friends huddled together and tears running down their faces. Jade grabbed Tom’s hand and squeezed before being pulled back into Ron’s arms. “She’ll be alright, she has to be. She was smiling and talking be…before she started seizing,” muttered Jade.

It’s hours later before the scans and test come back, the doctor on her case comes over to them, “It seems as if she’s got an acute brain bleed. She’ll need surgery, and a few weeks of rest afterwards. I’ll see you after.” The doctor bid goodbye and walked off to what they assumed the operating floor to scrub in.

It’s even more time spent in the waiting room, eating cheap vending machine snacks, horribly burnt coffee from the cafeteria, and tears burning their eyes.

Tom and the couple had to call into base and let them know what had happened to Rachael and they had a family emergency and needed a few days off, which the Commanding Officer easily granted.

As the night slowly turned into daytime, Ron made calls to the squadron members to let them know about Rachael’s condition and comforted his wife and best friend. It was hard on all of them, they all formed a tight bond over the weeks of Top Gun.

Once Rachael was put in an Post-Operation room on another floor, and the anesthesia wore off, the others were able to see her. Tom sat on a nearby chair, which he drug up to the side of her bed so he could hold her hand.

Ron stayed back, and rested on the farthest wall, Jade sat on the other side of her best friend’s bed in another very uncomfortable seat she found in the hall that she carried in.

Tom felt a squeeze to his hand, he lifted up his head and saw Rachael’s dazed eyes looking around, “What the hell? Why do you have sad faces, I told you I was fine.” “Rach! Oh my god, baby! I was so worried!” Tom shouted as he kissed her hand and then her forehead softly.

Jade gingerly hugged Rachael as tight as she dared, careful not to hurt her best friend more. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to wipe them away before Rachael could see. No such luck, “Jade, I said I was fine. See! No worst for wear!”

“You just had surgery! You can’t say that!” “I would have never guessed that I was just out of surgery. I couldn’t tell by my headache, or new room.” “Please don’t use sarcasm in a time like this.” “Sarcasm is how I cope. I’m in pain and it brings me serotonin.”

Soft laughter could be heard from around the group, it would be Dragon who can make them laugh in a time like this. “So, I’m guessing that the others know too and plan on visiting soon?”

Tom missed her hand again before starting, “Yeah, round six or seven. Goose said that Bradley wants to see his favorite pilot.” “Aw, and I wanna see my lil man too! I miss him, I have seen him in so long!”

“Two days isn’t that long.” “To you maybe, but for me? It’s an eternity,” Rachael pouted. The men rolled their eyes lovingly as Jade laughed.

Six-thirty on the dot, there was a small knock on the door before a blonde woman holding a small human came in, “Auntie Dragon!” Yelled the boy as Carole looked sheepish, “Sorry, he heard this morning that Rachael was hurt and couldn’t stop begging to see you. Goose wanted to wait until later for us to visit so you could recuperate.”

“Oh it’s fine! I’m always happy to see my favorite future pilot!” Bradley was let down from his mother’s arms before running as fast as his four-year-old legs would let him to his Uncle Ice, who picked him up and sat him down on Dragon’s bed as she scooted over to make room.

“I’m glad to hear that your ok, you had us all worried when Tom called earlier and said you needed brain surgery.” “I’d say, nothing got done in the air today, all worried sick about your health. Mav was so outta his head, he almost took a nose dive more than once!” Announced Goose as he entered the room, backed by most of the squad.

“Oh, so he’s more dangerous than usual when people he cares about is hurt?” “I am dangerous, Ice.” Smirked Mav as the others laughed at the memory. “Yeah, yeah.” “How’s the best of the best doin?” “Pretty good, I got my lil buddy to help keep my mind off of the pain.” “When do you come back?”

“Um, I’m not sure. I didn’t even know I had brain surgery until afterwards.” “Nice shaved head, by the way.” Smiled Hollywood, with his arm wrapped around Duckie, his girlfriend. “Thanks, I think it looks badass.” “It definitely does,” stated Cricket, Leonard’s girlfriend and Duckie’s sister.

“Hi girlies! I haven’t seen you in a hot minute! Hugs are in order!” Said Rachael as she leaned up and waited with open arms as the two midwestern sisters made their way to the bed.

The girls smiled and gently hugged her back. “Before you take our girls away, can we get hugs too?” Dragon pretended to think before smirking and opening her arms again. Each of the men took turns getting a tight and loving hug from Rachael.

The others stayed and socialized until it was lights out for the floor and said their goodbyes before leaving. Unfortunately, this included Ron and Jade too. It started out as one of the worst days of Tom’s life, but it ended better than he expected.

Harper wouldn't really pay him much mind other than the fact that he's a pre-war ghoul. Maybe chat with him about having experience that didn't really apply to the Wasteland or the Commonwealth (Harper was originally penned to be the vault's chaplain, and he has sales experience. Both feel pretty useless in the Capital Wastes and the Commonwealth, respectively).

Pen just treats him like some guy! She’s less about bonding over the past and more about just hearing his stories. Pen's main thing is listening to folks and empathizing with them, and she has experience with really old ghouls due to Raul (and, to an extent, Dean). She’d buy him a drink, probably cheer him up, and not leave until he was laughing and in higher spirits.

Murk finds him boring and unrelatable--not in a mean way but in an adult that a teenager has no interest in being chummy with. She does feel a little bad about his circumstance, but he's still alive, so what's the problem? Sir, it was two hundred and ten years ago, move on. Find a therapist. C'mon, dude, we all have problems.

Tallahassee, God, she doesn’t know what to do or say. She’s...distant but still polite, especially since he clocks on who she is immediately. She feels awful that she survived and he became a ghoul, a reminder that despite all the shit that she's going through, others had it worse when the bombs fell. It wouldn't be until much later that she'd start interacting with him properly. She'd still keep him at arm's length but try to help him. After all, if it wasn't for his insistence about getting her family signed up for the vault, she wouldn't even be here.

Nate hears about him beforehand, sidles up to him, and goes, “Sir, have I got an opportunity for you." He tries to help this guy. He's very task-oriented, and approaches the problem like, "Okay you're depressed? Let's get you a job! Sales experience, you say? How about you set up a store!" He comes back and checks in on him periodically, just to see how he's doing. Is definitely on a first-name basis with the Vault-Tec rep.

you always loved the sound of cicadas. they were loud that day, a steady stream of their chirping that you said sounded like the melody of your favorite song. no matter how hard i tried, i couldn't figure out exactly what you meant. but perhaps that was because they were hard to hear over the beating of my heart. a rhythmic pounding that overtook all other noises beyond the tone of your voice. the up and down waver of your inflection which cut clear through everything else in its way. you sounded like my favorite song that day. though i guess your voice is always my favorite.

xiaojun's handwriting is practiced to a degree of elegancy, with swooping ends of consonants and dramatically drawn vowels. everything about him is beautiful, so it only makes sense for this to be as well, with elongated strokes of cursive that seem to be stripped from the fine pages of old prose. despite all of its intricacy and detail, it's always legible. every phrase and sentiment able to be discerned underneath all the glitz and glamor of his penmanship (something he tends to regrets each and every time ten or hendery seems to get their hands on them).

he's a nostalgic person, constantly and consistently returning to old memories to revisit them again and again and again. he loves to write about the past, to remember every detail that made his head spin and his breath catch. and he loves to relive them, though it's nearly melancholy, and to write them down with such a pretty consideration to ensure he'll never forget them. it's for this reason that he writes on white lined paper, the kind you rip out of notebooks or are handed in secondary school. it's rather pointless in the grand scheme of things, since his words transcend lines and sentences break across margins. isn't it really all for the memory, though?

like chenle, xiaojun's letters are not slipped into an envelope, stamped with an address, and signed off with your name. he finds there to be something devastatingly romantic in writing love letters that will never reach their addressee, or at least, don't have the intent too. but he hopes that one day, perhaps in the silence of a conversation or when his hand is clutching yours a bit too tight, that he'll find the courage to enunciate all of his affections. and then deliver the letters, each and every one that he has written throughout all the years he has known you, in the hopes that your love will become something that he can hold with both nostalgia for your younger years and fortune for your future ones.

waning sunlight bore through the row of square windows perched high up on the nekoma gymnasium's walls. the gym lights were already off, and in the dimness of the space, the windows gave glimpses to the pink and purple sky as the sun was starting to set outside. they casted shapes on the shiny and sneaker-streaked wooden floor, the patches of light continuously getting sliced and diced by the shadow of the spinning ceiling fans the third years were yet to turn off.

the only noises that met your ears were the distant whirr of those metal blades, the minuscule clicking of buttons and flicking of joycons, and the faint sound of breathing coming from kenma–who was snug up against you as you sat on the floor against one of the gym walls, showing you the gameplay of the new game he just bought.

volleyball practice had just ended. you could hear through the open entrance doors the rest of the boys on the team conversing loudly, as they put equipment away or were gathering their things to go home–it was a school night after all.

but between you and kenma, no words needed to be spoken. you both were completely content there, feeling the warmth of one another close by and watching the bright screen of kenma's portable gaming console flash colorful pictures of a hero overcoming their evil adversaries.

kenma was very grateful for this fact, for this little ritual he started to share with you when you started to stop in at the end of volleyball practice. originally, you did it with the intention to chat and ask him how practice went, then to walk home with him and kuroo and talk some more.

but sometimes practice was tiring, and some days kenma just couldn't find the energy to keep up the conversation. it's not that he didn't want to talk to you. he loved hearing your voice when you two conversed, actually.

all it was is that he needed to recharge. he needed to play with his games, even if just for ten to twenty minutes.

so you let him. because you care. and kenma loves appreciated that about you. from then on, you two started to end the days off (before being met with kuroo to make the trek home, that is) finding a little corner, a bush, a not-so-dusty spot under the bleachers... to just sit. and he'd play another level or two of one of his games, and you'd calmly watch.

your shoulders brushed every time kenma had to quickly maneuver some ability in the game–and even if it slipped far enough for a rush of coldness to attack your arm, it would always without fail return to its rightful place, bringing with it warmth as an apology. at times, you swear you feel like your breathing was in sync. every time you blinked, your eyelids almost seemed to move in slow motion.

together, time gradually slowed to a stop. you two were in a little bubble of your own creation, where nothing else mattered except the both of you. both of you being, and being together...

"kenma! kenma? y/n!" kuroo's voice suddenly rings through the door of the gym and bounces off the walls of the big room. kenma quietly groans and a giggle escapes you at his reaction–as if you two haven't been in this scenario for a dozen times before, and as if kenma's reaction has ever changed, at that.

"yaku! i told you to turn the fans off. don't forget tomorrow!" you then hear the captain yell out. overhead, the fans spin to a stop, and now everything is still for a moment.

"time to go kenma," you softly nudge at his side.

the blonde reaches over to shove his console in his bag with a sigh, "fine, let's go."

as you stand up, you body feels a shock of cold. it's already yearning for kenma's warmth again, the one that makes hiding from the world feel so nice. so your body seeks it out, following close behind him as you make your way across the gym to the exit.

years later, the conventions you and kenma find yourselves at are awfully crowded. with questions at panel after panel and interactions with fan after fan at meet and greets, it's hard to believe the day still isn't over yet.

it's just that sometimes he had to recharge. and thankfully, he knew just how, and who to go to for that.

his feet moved mindlessly, seeking you out. he found you behind some backstage black curtains nearby.

"hey kenma!" you smile at him, "how'd the meet and greet go?"

"it went great," his hand suddenly grasps at yours, "let's go somewhere real quick?"

you don't miss the way his words come out laced with the tiny breath of a sigh, or how he's hunched over just a little more than usual.

so you don't question it as he pulls you through the crowds, weaving to different convention hall entrances until finally when he peeks his head in the doorway, you find a room unoccupied.

there, against the wall and on the worn-out carpeted floor, you sit–nothing besides a bare stage, rows of empty chairs, and the two of you.

kenma relishes in this newfound hiding spot, letting his eyes close and his head lean against your shoulder for even just a moment. the bustling of the convention-goers outside gets tuned out.

there's no game console in his hands this time. so you resort to watching how instead of pressing at buttons and joycons, he plays with your warm hands under his fingertips.

and you let him, for as long as he wants, and he appreciates loves that about you, the person–his solace–who gets him so well. he loves you.
