My first exposure to posting art on the internet was on Instagram, when I posted my my little pony oc (I was 9 years old)

Her name was Sparkle Phone and she was a teal alicorn with blue eyes and brown hair, she was roommates with chrysalis, her cutiemark was a drawing of my cellphone with a rhinestone case. I would post base edits of her, and drawings of her often. Adults put me on those "bad art" accounts that were very common back then; and these I was harassed off of my account for a few years, and nearly quit. I remember I came back with another base edit, and a specific account posted: "the bitch is back!" With a screenshot of my posts.

I can't fully remember what kept me going, probably some friends I made and my love for drawing mlp. Though, due to the constant harrasment I changed her to be a normal pegasus named Violet Fire ; and cut all her ties to chrysalis. It also made me fear making a "Mary Sue" oc for a while, so a lot of my early ocs were just. Guys, and didn't do anything really cool :[

I eventually made good friends and grew past that, now my ocs are COOL and I post cringe all the time, but I do wonder what it would've been like if I *hadnt* dealt with that

Otherwise when I was in the MCYT community (smaller creators and big names like Team Crafted) I'd post art and tag my faves, and if they retweeted it I tended to get a lot of rude comments from randos who didn't like my anatomy. I was happy that my faves liked it though so, I just started blocking people then.

For the MLP time I did traditional art, or used YouDoodle on my phone, for the MCYT era I used Procreate when it was free

so two things: i have a topic idea for a video essay ive wanted to do for awhile, BUT id also like to get some outsider opinions. SO.

could everyone who considers themself, or remembers what it was like to be a beginner artist online talk about your experiences? im talking like, what websites did you use? what were the negative things that stuck out to you? what helped you get by? DID you get by? did you quit, and why?

For me, tracing? Yea that blatantly art theft. Heavily referencing is also theft to me. But say you like the pose and want to just refernece the post? Sure! I don't think pose theft exists

I trace things privately all the time to better practice body shapes or dynamic poses, but yeah, as was said above; ask permission before doing it publically + don't rely on it forever

while i wouldnt say art theft its not like. i mean its using their hard work to make a piece while claiming it as ur own basically. maybe not theft but its certainly a bit dickish. if you were to credit the original thing youve traced then no, credit where credits due- though i think if the artist were to get upset with you if you did it without their permission theyd be within their right to be. usually when i see people do this to me i dont say anything but i just block them because i dont like it.

for practicing on your own time like, it really doesnt matter; its a decent way to improve but you cant rely on it forever if you want to really learn. at the end of the day though, it is just art politics online, and this is just how i feel personally - theres no real legality or 'rules' about these things, its just curtesy and if you dont want to step on the toes of peers with the same interests as you.
