Peggy smiled even though it broke her heart if things had been different they really could have had a beautiful life together. She reached out and touched his face, he really hadn't aged unlike her. And yet he still wanted her.

"You're alive, Steve. It's hardly too late for us."

"I see," Peggy knew to hold her tongue, Tony was young. What was youth for, if not to do crazy things like having a fling while on holiday? But the boyfriend comment gave her pause.

"Are you sure that's wise, Darling?"

"Hello, stranger." (Auntie Peggy is the best, sue me.)

"Aunt Peggy?" Tony hadn't seen her in years. He stared for a moment, then stood up to greet her. "It's good to see you! What brings you here?"

Peggy was long past the age where she needed a big fuss on her birthday, so she was expecting a quiet night at home after work, sixty-eight wasn't a milestone birthday any way.

So when she saw her godson waiting for her when she got home she was surprised.

"Well, aren't you a pleasant surprise, to what do I owe this honor?"

"Hello, Sweet Boy." Peggy smiled, kissing Tony's cheek in greeting. Her retirement party was in full swing, and of course, Tony was fashionably late.

"I almost gave up on you."

"Howard, stop picking on my godson!"

"But nothing was in it, and you were watching him, right?" Peggy understood that something like that could be bad she didn't want to downplay that.

"Are you telling me that you chased Tony out of the lab and made him scared of you because of some broken glass?" Peggy was so angry she couldn't see straight.

"Instead of being concerned, your son might have cut himself. You made him afraid you would do something to him. What the hell is wrong with you?"

Peggy scowled at Howard over Tony's head, before kneeling so she was at Tony's level.

"Darling, are you hurt?" That was her first concern, gently drying her godson's tears Peggy tried to calm him down before he made himself sick.

"Breathe, Sweet boy, breathe." Noticing Mr. Jarvis standing in the doorway Peggy nodded to him to indicate he should get Tony out of here.

"Why don't you and Mr. Jarvis go to the kitchens and see if Anna has something for you? I'll be there in a minute." Handing her godson off to the butler Peggy waited until she was sure they were gone before turning to Howard.

"What happened?"

Peggy hadn't even cried yet, Steve had told her the news, and Peggy had taken off to go find Tony.

Howard and Maria were her friends, and now they were gone. It didn't click that any of it was real until she saw her Godson's face.

Peggy didn't say a word. She just wrapped Tony up in a hug, He was so young. How could something like this have happened?

"I am so sorry, I love you so much."

She couldn't help herself, dialing the number for their secure line. Peggy held the receiver up to her ear.

"Come on, pick up." Peggy muttered under her breath as it rang.

And then the phone was picked up on the other end.

"Darling? I'm sorry I haven't been able to call until now, can you talk?"

Peggy visibly relaxed when her godson kissed her cheek. The last several days had been stressful, to say the least, but none of that was Tony's fault.

"Hello to you too, Sweet Boy. What a lovely surprise."

Her hair has grayed, there are wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and smile lines around her mouth, signs of a life well lived, and here he is looking the same as the day he came home to her.

Her best guess, he hadn't decided to come home yet.

"I'm happy." That was the truth. Her forty-ninth birthday was in two days, and yes, true that 'security breach,' which in hindsight was without a doubt Steve, meant lots of paperwork for Peggy but she was so happy.

Steve blinks a bit in shock, looking around quickly, and then removes the hat he was wearing. He approaches Peggy, smiling at her. "I had to see you too. You're just as beautiful as the day I last saw you. How are you?"

Peggy hummed, she'd met Tony's friend James Rhodes a couple of times and she had a feeling when she was gone he'd be running around after Tony's inventions like she had done for Howard in their youth.

"What else, I know you, you very rarely work on one thing at a time."

"I should chastise you for procrastinating, but I get to see you so I can't be too upset about it." Peggy said with a fond smile, she knew Tony was a very smart young man, he still shouldn't put things off if he could help it though.

"So, what brilliant project are you working on now?"

"If you can get ahold of Maria, that would be amazing." Peggy said, giving Ana's hand a squeeze.

"I'll have him back as soon as I can." Smiling at Tony interacting with the giant of a dog, Peggy called out.

"Are you ready to hit the road, Birthday Boy?"

"Happy birthday, Anthony."

"Thanks, Aunt Peggy. Dad got up early this morning and left already. I think he totally forgot."

Peggy rolled her eyes when she saw the sleek black car waiting for them.

"What's her name?" Peggy asked, Tony had inherited Howard’s penchant for showing off for beautiful women.

She moved to the passenger side and shook her head. Maybe this one was different. What did she know?
