It's not quite cold enough for snow, but enough that she sees the puffs from her breaths as she walks around.

Sumire's head has been a mess since she got out of the palace. Akira and Akechi had managed to get her out of there, after everything was shown on display; the truth that she had forgotten. Or rather, had been made to forget, if what Maruki had said was true. She didn't know how much she could believe him, but it felt less like she was in a fog since then.

(Cendrillon has been silent since then as well. Gone are the headaches and mocking words. The spell has been broken and all that's left around her are ashes and broken glass.)

(How does she pick herself up from here?)

(How does she go back to living as Sumire, when she threw herself away to hide behind the ghost of her sister?)

"Just what am I supposed to do now..." she mumbles to herself, looking down at the ribbon in her hands.

     "Of course! You don't have to ask me twice, senpai!" And with that, Sumire holds out her hand, a smile on her face, as if inviting the other. Because she could never say no to this, and couldn't say no to them, either.

" happy birthday, sumire. " akira smiles, having invited her to leblanc for her present, and he gives it to her in the form of her favorite dish. she'll never know the amount of trial and error he went through trying to make sure it was perfect for her.

     "Thank you senpai!" It's been a bit of a... different birthday this year. Not that it's a bad thing necessarily, but after everything that happened last year, it's been a bit of an adjustment for everything. At least she hasn't been alone this year; the rest of the thieves had sent her various texts (or in the case of Morgana, made Akira send a text on his behalf, and Futaba had told in her person) and her parents had been doing what they could to make her loved today.

     It's hard to believe she had almost wanted to throw all this away for some fairy-tale like dream.

     But she hadn't, and here she is with all this now. Thanks to the help of everyone, she's still here and more sure of herself than before. Sumire couldn't be more grateful for all this.

     She wasn't sure what she was expecting when Akira had invited her here for her present, but when she's presented with a meal in front of her, it all makes sense. Not only that, but her favorite one... her senpai really knew how to make her day.

     "Senpai... you really didn't have to do anything for me you know. Still... thank you. I'm sure you did a great job making this for me, so I'll be sure to enjoy it!"

     She’s going to sit here in the “not allowed in spin-offs” jail along with her senpai. Guess that’s just how it is for both of them.

    “ Ah, yeah, I suppose I just a need a little more time to adjust to the city and all. I’ll get there eventually. ”

    With that, however, he lets Yoshizawa-san lead the way and follows not far behind. Odd as it is to be a newcomer in a large city like Tokyo, there’s something a lot more reassuring about walking beside someone he knows. Plus, Akira would be lying if he says that he isn’t excited to get a start on this whole training thing. And who better to teach to him than Kasumi? She seems eager enough, at least, and that in turn makes the prospect all the more interesting to him. And, hey, it’s something to bond over.

    “ On the subject of mapping this place out, though, ” Akira speaks up once again as they are walking, “ I think I’m starting to get the gist of the subway system at the very least, so that’s one good thing. ” Knowing where to board and what station to hop off on does help quite a bit, but that’s something else entirely. “ …Do you mind if I ask what you’re work out is usually like? ”

     “I’m sure you’ll get there eventually. The longer you’re here, the more you’ll get used to it after all.”

     Still, she leads the way for the two of them, glancing over just to make sure that Akira’s following her. She’s glad to be able to help him with this, considering how intimidating Tokyo can be to navigate at times.Though, what’s more exciting is being able to teach someone else. Kasumi’s never really gotten the chance to, and he had seemed so interested in learning, which in turn made her eager to teach him so it’s good for both of them in the end. And it’s something for the both of them to bond over so that’s an added bonus.

     “Well that’s good! It’s a start, so it’s good you’re getting the hang of that at least!” The subway system was both a blessing and a curse at times, so it’s good he’s getting used to that. It must be a lot, all this, but still it’s better than nothing. She has to think for a bit, her expression turning thoughtful. It’s become so normal for her that explaining it to someone else is something she’s never really had to do before. “Usually I do stretches before anything else. You always have to stretch before working out. After that...” She pauses, trying to think what else is there. Shouldn’t she know this well enough by now...? What else is there... what else is she missing? Hopefully Akira doesn’t notice her silent distress.

     “Well... we haven’t really known each other that long but I do think she’s super neat! And smart! And... strong too. I heard about it from Kurusu-senpai that she’s been through a lot. So for her to get through all that... it’s incredible, you know? I mean, I’ve been through a lot too but I didn’t exactly go about it the right way... so I’m glad she’s managed to get through it.”

     She fidgets with her hands for a moment, as if trying to figure out what to say next. “I guess... I just see a lot of what I went through. Don’t get me wrong though! Our circumstances are different but... I can relate to it. So in a way it’s comforting? And that really means a lot. So it’s just really comforting that despite all we’ve been through, we’re still here and moving on.”

     “...Also she’s really cute. T-That’s alright to say, isn’t it?” She’s a little flustered about admitting that but it’s the truth about how she feels.

     “Resisting?”

     Her head tilts to the side, confusion evident across her features. Just what was Hoshi trying to get at here?

     “Oh... Are you asking why I’m resisting against this reality?”

     She had resisted, the grief and guilt had all come back, crashing over her like a tidal wave. She wanted to run away, to escape back into the fairy tale she dreamed of, the one she wished for with all her heart.

     But the magic can’t last forever. Everything disappears at midnight’s chime, a princess for one night only to be returned to a life of cinders and ash. Kasumi is no more, only Sumire remains.

     Living in the shadow of her sister’s glory isn’t something she can do anymore.

     “...I’ll admit that living as Kasumi would be easier but... it wouldn’t be right. I’d just be running from the truth, knowing that deep down, I couldn’t live like that.”

     I fled and fled, clinging on to you... But I knew the truth from the beginning... That becoming Kasumi just on the outside wouldn’t do...

     She knew all along. Or at least her mind did, that something wasn’t right. The disconnect, her struggles to keep up... Of course just thinking she was Kasumi wouldn’t be enough to change everything.

     I’m through... being the weak Sumire!

     “So, I’m going to stand up for myself. I’m never running from myself again. And if that means resisting this reality... then that’s what I’ll do.”

     “Well... healthy food can taste good you know. But sometimes it just... can’t be made any better so you just have to deal with it. You get used to it whether you like it or not.” Or at least, that’s how it’s been for her. In someways it’s why she started making meals for herself to begin with. “Though... I get what you mean. This isn’t really my best attempt but it’ll be better next time I promise!”

A breath, trembling and forced and shallow. Then, another. Where we are …? No, they wished to be anywhere but here. It was too much, but there was no where to run. They were trapped in this reality, with their own mistakes and with these voices screaming in their head. 

A different reality, an ideal and perfect one – No, they can never go back to that. 

( Self-righteous. Blasphemer. Failure. )

But being here was too unbearable. 

They could feel their eyes sting as their heart drummed faster and faster. They felt something pull at their hair, but it was no longer their hands nor their fingers. And once again, their body began to feel like they were made of blocks, of parts – that would simply rust, come loose, and fall away – clattering onto the floor.

Somewhere, they heard a soft voice, that sounded akin to their own. The voice spoke with what was their mouth, “ I’m … sorry, Sumire-san. I can’t do this … I … don’t know how … ”

     Sumire doesn’t know quite what to do here, and she wishes she knew what she could do in this situation. It’s clear that she needs to do something here but just what? This isn’t really her area of expertise but there’s just got to be something that someone like her can do here.

     She doesn’t want to stand by and do nothing after all.

     (But just what can you do when you don’t know what the problem here is?)

     Still, doing something is better than doing nothing in the end.

     “It’s... it’s okay. I don’t know what I’m doing right now myself anyways...” She has a feeling they aren’t talking about the same thing, but she can worry about that later. Right now it’s more important that she gets him back to his senses or something like that.

     “And... if you don’t know how to do something, then it’s okay to ask for help you know. You’re not alone and all that, after all. I’m here if you need it... even if I’m not sure how much help I can be.” It’s the least she can do to help.

          A hum escapes him as he watches her and processes her response. He supposes she’s not wrong. Yet he still finds himself irritated by the situation entirely. He never liked unplanned variables or surprises. There was always something to gain from knowledge, after all.

          “Let’s say there is something that was holding you back. Given your performances that seems to be the case. But Maruki could easily overwrite whatever is holding you back. He knew you wanted to be your sister, so why didn’t he take away your slump?” There’s a pause before he shakes his head. No one wanted to pick apart, to rip apart, Maruki more than Akechi did. There was too much at stake for himself not too. And so, he lets out a sharp scoff. “He preaches about being able to do all of this high and mighty bullshit but couldn’t even do that. Doesn’t that bother you?”

     An uneasy noise leaves her as she listens to him, fidgeting with her hands. It’s been so much and she’s just so confused and unsure about everything. And dealing with this reality that’s been created and what Maruki did to her... it’s unsettling. Why couldn’t this be more simple...?

     “I don’t know... It’s true I wanted to be Kasumi, and he made it happen, so why not...?” She doesn’t know if she’s disappointed or just confused. Maybe Maruki wasn’t able to do it for some reason? Was she not strong enough or something? Or was it the part of her that was still Sumire that was trying to fight and make itself known? She’d said before that she felt there was a disconnect that she just brushed off as a slump so maybe that was it? There was so much she didn’t know about all this. “I don’t know if I’m bothered by it or not... That hasn’t even been on my mind since everything happened if I’m being honest.”

    “ Right, yeah, that makes sense. ”

    You have to start with the most basic of basics. That last part is said internally in a mimicry of Morgana’s voice; funnily enough, something about learning something new always brought that line up to the forefront of Akira’s mind, even when the self proclaimed not-cat isn’t present. The thought is dashed, however, when Yoshizawa-san tells him to follow after her, and he can’t help but feel a little bit sheepish all over again. Yes, the city is big and difficult to navigate. He may have been called out on the ease at which he manages to get lost at least once or twice by various people.

    “ I–uh, you can lead, ” he replies with a nod, reaching a hand to rub at the back of his neck with something of a soft laugh. It’s not really a concern, after all he does have his phone GPS if things get bad enough, but even so he makes another joke of it. “ I wouldn’t want to get both of us lost. ”

     “Yep! I won’t go too hard on you since you’re just starting out and all; everyone’s a beginner at something after all.”

     Once upon a time she was a beginner at this too, so she knows all too well how it can feel to be at that state. Kasumi knows that it can be a bit discouraging in the beginning as well, so she doesn’t want it to be like that for Akira. Her own coach is her only real point of reference and while she respects her, the way she teaches might be a bit too harsh at times, even if she only wants the best for her. Sometimes you just need that type of push to make yourself worker harder so you can get even better.

     “Right,” she replies with a nod of her own, though she does notice how he looks. Even with his joking words she still can’t help but feel a bit bad. “I doubt you’d get us lost, but I get it. It just takes time to get used to the city. Soon enough you’ll be able to navigate this place like the back of your hand.” Plus you can always ask for help, she thinks but she doesn’t say that out loud.
