matteo had no idea what lies riley had spun to get them off the hook, or maybe not entirely, but at least they were alive. there was a moment there when matteo was sure they wouldn’t survive. people didnt survive this. he’d blacked out during their ‘trial’ and had only come to when they’d been separated again, forced to sit around the fire while riley was whisked off to a house. one by one they were lead away from the fire, and matteo hadn’t really noticed, he didn’t know who he was following or where, but somebody had spoken to him and now he was clambering over wet soil. he glanced around them when they made their way inside a hut. it was surprisingly warm, but like something from another time, and matteo had to wonder if they were all just riding a seriously strange high, “ what? ” he finally broke his own silence, his voice a croak as his eyes found the strangers, realising that he had yet to hear anything they’d already said to him.

matteo wasn't sure when exactly it was that the desire to follow in her father's footsteps kicked in , only that it was her main focus now that he was looking to hand over his empire . kieran had never really had much interest , and while it would have made all the sense in the world for the job to passed to the eldest of the moretti children , matteo was the only one interested , and that was how they ended up here . the two sisters were remarkably alike , and yet , the opposite sides of the same coin , it didn't take a genius to realise that . kieran wanted a peaceful life , and matteo wanted to thrive in power , whatever drama came with that could be tolerated .
she was already enjoying how differently people looked at her , how differently they were already treating her , it was providing something of a high . she made her way into one bar she had yet to gain ownership of , smiling to herself as she scanned the surroundings , and more so when a drink was eagerly thrust into her hand . the manager was quick to show her to a closed off section of her own , and with her friends in tow , took a seat in the booth that overlooked the rest of the club . this place served as neutral ground for each of the more established criminals , but matteo wanted it for her own .

“ didn’t realize how far out you could have gotten , “ eli spoke as he looked back at matteo . granted , eli went out pretty far but he guessed not far enough if matteo never heard any of his whistles . he offered a small smile , “ i’m okay . “
" none of that matters anymore," he breathed, " I know you missed out on a lot, and I'm sorry, but -- you know, I just wish it could be like it was." that wasn't entirely possible and he knew it, but matteo could and would still want.

matteo made his way out of the water , beaming almost as soon as his eyes landed on his other half , “ have I ever mentioned that you are my favourite view in the whole world ? ” he crooned , tilting his head to the side , “ you didn’t have to come by , I would have picked lunch up before I got home . ” he wasn’t about to object , it was nice finding quin here . @decthmessiah

despite the initial dread of coming back here , matteo had perked up shortly after entering his first bar . he hadn’t kept his distance totally , but it had been some time since he was back , and he was instantly welcomed warmly by the bar and it’s people . he didn’t think many people would recognise him , but then again , perhaps he hadn’t changed as much as he thought . he spent the majority of his night chatting with bartenders , people he’d gone to school with and such ; what was lucky for matteo was that , he didn’t really remember much about school anymore , or maybe he’d just cut out the memories , either way , it made for a good time , and he didn’t exactly notice the hours passing by .

it had been months since matteo slept on the sofa, he hadn’t felt quin’s absence so harshly in weeks and it felt like life was finally getting back to normal, until tonight. he wasn’t so sure when he fell asleep, or why he hadn’t turned in that night, but when he woke up, he was a little disorientated, and for whatever reason, for the first time in a while, he was scared. matteo looked around the room, lit only by the tv screen, and looked for the reason he’d been startled awake. he slowly sat up, putting his feet on the ground and deciding to just head to bed anyway.
he pushed himself up and stopped, there was a noise from out in the yard, one that quickly stirred the dogs into barking incessantly. matteo figured it was a deer, or a raccoon, or some other small animal, but his feet carried him to the back door anyway. he flipped on the light and felt his stomach drop. he wanted to vomit, he wanted to cry, he wanted to understand how his brain could be so cruel as to conjure up this image after so much progress. matteo opened up the door and stepped out onto the porch, the figure didn’t disappear, “ quin? ” @wntrflln

“ I don’t like to be backed into a corner, ” he admitted, moving back towards the car. he knew that he didn’t exactly know how to stand up to his family, and that frustration from before he was locked up seemed to be creeping back in. “ I feel powerless, ” he whispered, “ with them, I mean... I don’t like feeling powerless. ” @wntrflln

matteo knew that he’d have to go home eventually, though his family seemed reluctant to let him be alone just yet. his father had put him up for now, he might as well. he’d housed matteo’s many dogs for all this time, what was one more puppy? he refused the bedroom that night, uncomfortable with the space for the time being, and simultaneously craving the solitude of his cottage. matteo opted instead for the sofa, and woke somewhat early, half expecting to see any one of his family members to be nearby, waiting to greet him after so long apart.
he felt them rather than saw them, his lips twitching slightly, “ I thought people would stop watching me sleep when I was let out of the nut house. ” he opened his eyes but didn’t lift his head from the pillow, instead matteo reached out to pet the head of the dog closest to him, the one that hadn’t left his side since he got back. his abandonment was forgiven, it seemed. matteo bit his lower lip, “ did you miss me? or would you just like to ask me what it was like? ”

it was surprising, just how easy it was to end that life. he didn’t have to, matteo knew that. he understood the difference, and unlike before, his mind was clear now. there was no more feverish haze, he wasn’t confused and he knew exactly what he was doing. this man had come for him, it was kill or be killed. that was what matteo would tell people if or when they found the body that he had no plans for now.
there was a sick enjoyment there, he revelled in watching life drain from the man’s eyes. he appreciated the ache and burn of his bloodied and bruised fists after driving them repeatedly into every available inch of the man struggling beneath him. in no time at all, he had stopped struggling. all that satisfaction disappeared with him.
he had felt this before, not exactly, but something similar. he had been able to empathise for so long that was neither overwhelming nor unfamiliar. something closer to greeting an old friend. matteo settled back, resting on his heels as the balls of his feet balanced his weight easily. he sighed softly as the adrenaline drained away, leaving him with a rather sobering realisation that he now had to think, and fast.
only one thought sprung to mind though; a token, a returned favour. the man tossed the body into his truck, covered it with a tarp and drove himself out towards the home of what he considered to be a friend once. he wasn’t so sure that still stood anymore. maybe it did. it was hard to tell. matteo carried the body up the steps, and rang the door bell. there wasn’t much time wasted, and it was only really in that moment that matteo realised how careless he was being. anybody could have saw him, but he didn’t seem to register the severity of that, especially so soon after being let out.
the door opened and matteo tossed the body forward, it slid for a moment along the pristine hallway floor, stopping only when the carpet run bunched beneath him. matteo pressed his lips together, head cocking to the side, “ I brought you a gift. ” @wntrflln

there was a time there that he thought they might not make it, that they’d seen their end and all for what? a wretched holiday none of them would have enjoyed. his father had done his best, each of them had, but there seemed to be no shortage of hungry wolves in the area. it wasn’t their idea to stop, but the horses needed to rest and they were not convinced by the locals’ religious superstitions of the land they travelled in. the wolves spooked the horses, and they abandoned them as quickly as they could, suddenly regaining the energy they’d spent on the journey.
matteo shuddered in his sleep now, the howls of the wolves in the distance mirrored in his dreams. an incoherent mumble fled his lips moments before the man shot up. he was still surprised by the kindness of these strangers, those who, while a little odd, and eerily familiar, were warm and welcoming. they’d opened their home and the morettis had been there ever since. he couldn’t recall how long it had been. days, weeks, who was to say? he stood up, venturing out of his room and down the stairs, grateful for the light from the moon which was particularly bright this evening. he made a mental note to remember water for their room next time, the bite of the cold was harsh on his bare feet.
he helped himself to a drink and stopped when he felt a shadow disrupt that otherwise bright light. matteo turned, eyes widened a fraction before he relaxed ever so slightly, though not entirely, “ sorry -- did I wake you? ”

matteo wasn’t totally surprised when people slapped him, though he was confused by the whole kiss and then slap, but that didn’t mean it was a displeasure. he blinked, stumbling back slightly, “ that wasn’t unplesant, actually. ” he watched as they stumbled away and shook his head, pausing when he noticed eyes on him, lips quirking as he flashed a wink, “ you want seconds? ”

gabriel was rather dreading this, he didn’t overly look forward to the family dinners that involved cal and marisa, well, mostly cal. the man grimaced as the doorbell rang, and he sighed in defeat, moving out into the hallway to welcome more of his guests. “ welcome, ” he breathed as he opened the door, lips curving into his trademark grin, “ come on in, food’s almost ready. ”
matteo lifted his head when the doorbell rang, lips twitching slightly, “ they’re here, ” he hummed playfully, glancing around the rest of the room. “ last chance to place your bets on cal’s reaction to my date, ” he patted quin on the shoulder and sipped his drink.
joshua was rather glad everybody else was here, this was moving a lot faster than any of his relationships typically did, it was moving a lot faster than it had previously, but at least he wasn’t alone. dakota was here, riley was here, hell, even malachi, even if he didn’t like him all that much, was here, or would be. the man all but flinched when the door rang, his lips curving into a small smirk when he looked over at matteo, “ you think I’ll be able to fly under the radar since your brother’s ready to go to bat? ” @wntrflln

matteo ventured outside, happy to find matthias, finally, after not seeing the man for most the night. he tossed aside his joint and moved to push himself into the too small spot beside the man, “ hey, handsome, ” he purred, “ was wondering when I’d get to see you. ”

matteo was happy to open his home, he knew that alex was sure to be pissed, but he would deal with the consequences of that later, now he just wanted to have fun. he invited pretty much everybody he knew, and found himself now drinking most of those people under the table. he lowered his empty glass to the table and shot a wink, “ the only people that can outrdrink a moretti is a shelby. ”

matteo knew his family was sure to comment on his bumps and bruises, but he didn’t really care, and it wasn’t going to stop him from arriving at the summer house. he half hoped that his father would turn up alone, that marisa would find some reason to blow off spending time with her family, but that wasn’t his mom. he hesitated after climbing out of the car, looking at his mothers, “ this is going to be awkward at first, you know that, right? ” alex gave a small, sad smile and nodded, wrapping an arm around his matteo’s shoulders as they gradually moved towards the porch. alex questioned what matteo was going to tell them, and he shrugged, “ fuck knows, but my lies come better on the spot, so lets see. ” he straightened up when the door opened, “ hey, nerds. ”

matthias had tried to keep his eyes elsewhere but it was almost amusing how annoyed matteo seemed by his partner . “ you know , you could just break up “ he didn’t expect matteo to take that advice but he didn’t see a point in being with someone that he didn’t like .
matteo looked back at the other when he drew closer, narrowing his eyes slightly, “ I mean, I like them -- that’s why we’re together, do we have the same view on public displays of affection? or annoying the shit out of each other? evidently not. ” he leaned over to order his drink from the barista, “ and I’d like to point out, that you could mind your own business, too. ”
