[ BRAID ]:          sender, sitting behind the receiver’s back, begins to braid their hair.

 there's no real acknowledgment,     book still balanced on her lap,    gentle fingers toying with edges of paper as she lingers on the words before her.    long brown curls are rarely truly mastered outside of balls    &&    events where they are pulled into what feels like a thousand tiny braids:  each one decorated by the tiny pearls that seem to become her legacy.     eloise is an emerald,     there is always a new diamond,     and she    -    with her gentle skin and unassuming nature    -    is a pearl carefully plucked from ocean and placed onto cold metal to make the more precious gems around her shine all the brighter.

 ❝   trying to make me presentable?   ❞     low teasing comes with barely hidden smile,    so used to the subtle criticisms that follow her regardless of the effort put in.     maeve always looks the part    -     yet the parts required of her are never that of playing herself.       ❝   do you ever get the overwhelming urge to just...    cut it,   @emeraldshe​?    to wear it shorter?   ❞      it is not,    she knows,    how a lady is meant to look.    ❝   I'm not going to,  it'd just be nice.    ❞

 how long has it been?     since she was last here,    before life    &&    expectations swept her away to waters she was too soft to know how to navigate.    young widow is all too aware of the fact she is,   in the eyes of those seeing her again,    a tragedy.    a pretty little thing whose husband only lasted two years    -    left with titles and estates that they can surely can't wrap their minds around a woman handling alone.    (   time has passed whether she likes it or not,    and they have all grown in that time.   )

                     she cares.    no matter how she might not always have the words for it,    no matter how refusing to put past years into words only adds distance with the one person she once truly thought the world of.   maeve has never wished anything but the best for eloise...     and she is certainly not the best at anything.

 ❝   well.   ❞     for two people who pride themselves on seeing the world around them,     one would have thought that at least one of them would have noticed long before this moment.    still though,    hand is gentle when she takes eloise's,    pressing small kiss to other's hand in quiet mimicking of any well practiced gentleman.     ❝   as I said,    it's really good to see you again.     believe me or not,     I've rather missed you  @emeraldshe​.   ❞

 vicky!!   honestly I don’t even know where to start    -    the way I absolutely adore every character you write?    the way eloise and maeve are so utterly and completely fascinating to me??    I couldn’t pass up an excuse to make a little something for these bookworms whom both deserved to be born in a different era.
