Food and Mount Tsukuba 1/2, Sunday, 29 Sep
Already woke up later than planned, so my breakfast only consisted of Japanese milk tea and mixed nuts 👍
Then off I went to Mount Tsukuba (Tsukuba san - 筑波山)! Was supposed to be around three hours by walking, so biking should be faster.... But in the end I needed almost five hours.... Been exploring and looking around too much, lol
All around Tsukuba (both the city and the mountain) there are lots of shrines, with all different sizes, materials, use, etc. This is Ichinoyayasaka Shrine, a Shinto Shrine not far from my dormitory, and still in use to this day - even when I visited there were a few Japanese people coming to pray!
Further on my way towards the mountain, I had my natto sushi as a little snack, that I had prepared at home. Prepared may sound a little too ambitious - I just had to take the rice roll and roll it into the nori sheet, and then cut it into pieces... Natto are fermented soy beans, and I know many non-Japanese people are complaining they don't like the taste much. It was my first time trying it, and I have to say, it tastes good, mixing well with the taste of rice and algae, so the natto taste wasn't too strong at all. Solid 3/5
This was another very small shrine... Called Yasaka Shrine. I have honestly no idea why both of the mentioned shrines have "Yasaka" in their name...
On my way there suddenly discovered a pastry shop, so I had to go check it out. It's called エクレール林屋, and since it has éclair in its name I thought they would sell some. But only sold other delicious pastries, lol
I got myself this メロンショート (translated as melon shortbread, but to me it's really just normal melon cake), and actually there's only a melon on top - the filling is still made with tangerines. I ate it at this nice little pond (the fence looked even cuter in real life.... But couldn't capture it well on a photo). The cake is a nice 3/5.
Then I got this absolute masterpiece and my new favourite Japanese dessert - ドーナツ! They call it donut but it's definitely different and superior to the American style donut. It's crunchy on the outside, but also extremely soft and fluffy, it's sweet and sugary, but the red bean is balancing it out perfectly, and it just tastes amazing. I totally didn't expect this, and especially not the filling, it just blew my mind. Easy 5/5! After eating it I actually regretted not getting more, lol
I got it from a little shop along the way (Sakurai confectionery shop), that's run by an old lady. She doesn't speak English at all, and her Japanese is not easy to understand, so it needed me saying "I can't speak Japanese" in Japanese and lots of gestures from her side until I realised that I should pick up the donut myself and that she can't change big money, so I should pay with coins. I payed 120¥ for this amazing little donut.
Tumblr is restricting the amount of photos in one entry to ten photos, so that's it for now - but there will be part two later! More delicious food and more mountain!
