Happy Hangul Day everyone!

Today is October 9th in Korea, a public holiday called Hangul Day(한글날) commemorating the creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet. We can all thank the great King Sejong for inventing the creative and easy-to-learn writing system that still benefits all the Korean people and Korean learners out there.

Had a lovely 추석 and am enjoying this extra long holiday weekend~ Let's see what's happening this month!

1일 - 국군의날 / Armed Forces Day: This was actually celebrated on 9.26 this year (maybe because of Chuseok?) and they had a huge military parade in the middle of Seoul for the first time in years.

2일 - 임시공휴일 / Temporary Public Holiday: This Monday just happened to fall between the Chuseok holiday and National Foundation Day (both red days), so the president declared it a holiday as well this year! Supposedly it was part of a plan to "boost spending" but personally, I spend most holidays cozy at home, not out helping the economy...

3일 - 개천절 / National Foundation Day: This is a public holiday celebrating the founding of 고조선 (Gojoseon) & the Korean people. If you know the legend of 환웅 & 단군, this is the day that 환웅 came down from heaven~

8일 - 한로 / Hallo: One of the 24 seasonal divisions; the day when cold dew begins to fall

9일 - 한글날 / Hangul Day: Yes, a day to celebrate the Korean writing system! It's even a public holiday!

24일 - 상강 / Sanggang: One of the 24 seasonal divisions; this is said to be when the first frost falls

"간만의 아쉬탕가 요가"

얼마 전 땅고 디제이(닉네임 '민트') 하시는 분께서 여럿이 모여 아쉬탕가 요가하자는 공지를 페북에 올렸길래 신청. 2024년 10월 9일, 수요일이자 한글날. 을지로입구역에서 262번 버스를 타고 오전 11시경 산호 아파트 앞에 내려 '로즈발레온'이란 곳을 방문. 같은 건물에 '민트 동물 병원'이 있어서 혹시 여기 주인이신가 잠시 오해를…

평소 태극권, 요가를 꾸준히 하고는 있지만 오랜 세월 내 몸에 맞게 특화한 거라서 요가 안에 태극권이 있고, 태극권 안에도 요가 요소를 포함한 잡탕이다. 그럼에도 자칭 "태극권사"라는 정체성을 갖는 근거는 노자 도덕경을 소의 경전으로 삼았기 때문.

같은 논리로 파탄잘리 '요가 수트라'에 근거해 수련하는 사람을 참 수련자라고 보고, 소위 "다이어트 요가" 따위 간판을 건 곳은 돈벌이 수단으로서는 몰라도 나로선 도저히 수련자로 받아들이기 어렵다.

'아쉬탕가'라는 이름은 요가 수트라에 나오는 '여덟 가지 할 것들(=八肢體)'에서 온 말로 앎. 이외에 '요가 쿠룬타'라는 경전을 언급하던데 출판된 적은 없는 거 같다. 위키에는 이 요가 체계를 만든 파타비 조이스가 스승으로부터 말로 전해 들은 거로 나온다.

아쉬탕가 요가 풀코스는 너무 길고, 난이도가 높아 다 소화하지 못한다. (그날도 대략 반 정도만 한 듯) 그럼에도 내 개인 수련에 끼친 영향은 상당히 크다. 우선 간소화한 '태양 예배' 시퀀스. 단순하면서도 파워풀하다. (정확히는 단순하기 때문에 파워풀하다) 이게 맘에 들어 예전에 (불교 108배 흉내 내서) 백 번 해본 적 있고, '명상적 걷기' 책에도 꼭 하라고 인용했다.

또 하타 요가만 하던 시기엔 요가와 태극권 사이 접점이 없어 따로따로 수련했다면 빈야사(Vinyasa) 개념을 응용해 요가에다 태극권 요소를 섞을 수 있었다.

단체 수련을 하면 호흡과 동작을 남들과 맞춰야 하기 때문에 홀로 할 때와 같은 '트랜스 상태'로 진입하진 못한다. 대신 (외로이) 수련하다 다 함께 모여 하는 재미가 크다. 자기 합리화를 못 하므로 게으름 피울 수 없다. 나도 모르게 타성에 빠져 있던 걸 자각하게 해 준다.

간만에 힘든 요가 했더니 그사이 늙어서 척추 상태가 예전만 못함을 새삼 느낌. 고관절도 당연히 그렇고. 게다가 오른쪽 발목 수술한 여파로 한 발로 설 때 비틀거리더만. 욕심 내지 말고 현 상태를 적어도 칠순까진 유지하고 싶다. 그때까지 무탈하게 살아 있다면.
