interview: H1-KEY AIMS TO BRING COMFORT AND SOLACE TO THEIR LISTENERS THROUGH THEIR MUSIC

H1-KEY is back with their new single, “기뻐 (Deeper).” This song is the second track released that is part of their H1-KEYnote project, the first being their previous single, “Thinkin’ About You,” which was released on January 19th. Through this project, the group hopes to continue showcasing their musical colour by sending comfort and sentiments to all listeners and their fans, M1-KEY.

In the recent interview with global media outlets, H1-KEY shares more about their H1-KEYnote project, their aim and also their upcoming plan.

Q: You chose to launch your music project and release singles periodically. What motivated you to take this decision instead of pursuing a conventional comeback? How does this approach align with your artistic vision?

SEOI: The H1-KEYnote project was initiated to highlight our vocal abilities and musicality through our songs. Instead of returning with a traditional album, we opted for this project to showcase our vocal prowess. Exploring new genres and uncharted territories, the project mirrors our artistic vision while allowing us to grow alongside it.

Q: Your songs “Rose Blossom” and “SEOUL (Such a Beautiful City)” have been praised for their uplifting and hopeful lyrics. What are themes do you hope to convey with your latest single from the H1-KEYnote project, “Deeper,” and future singles in the project?

SEOI: I would describe it as a continuation of what we've showcased thus far, with the keyword being ""empathy." Currently, H1-KEY is on a journey to discover our unique musical colours, exploring a range of genres rather than confining ourselves to one. Our plan is to keep releasing songs of diverse genres and colours.

Q: "Thinkin' About You" is your first English song and also your first song for H1-KEYnote project. Why did you choose to launch the project with this song and how was your experience preparing it?

HWISEO: We launched the H1-KEYnote project with our song, "Thinkin' About You." It's not only our first English track but also our first song about love and break-up. Given its significance as a first in multiple aspects, we felt it was the perfect choice to kick off the project. This experience was new for us, especially considering it was our first English song. During the preparation process, we prioritized capturing the nuances accurately.

Q: Can you tell us more about the process of preparing for “Deeper” and how different it was to your past releases?

RIINA: We spent a considerable amount of time working on the song "Deeper" and we actually held onto this song for a while. The song was from the producer Hong Ji Sang after we worked on "Rose Blossom" together. The recording sessions for "Deeper" went through numerous revisions, and we put in a lot of effort to capture the song's emotions effectively.

Q: What kind of singer would you classify yourself as?

YEL: We aim to be singers who bring comfort and solace to our listeners. By continuing to sing songs that provide solace, we hope to inspire and comfort not only our fans but all who listen to our music.

Q: Aside from sending messages of comfort and hope to your fans, what do you feel is the best part of this H1-KEYnote project?

RIINA: The best aspect of the H1-KEYnote project is our ability to explore genres not included in our previous albums and showcase different vocal tones than what our title songs typically offer. We dedicated ourselves to this preparation, and I'm pleased with the final result.

Q: All four of you are the vocalist of the group, do you have your own know-how on how to keep your voice healthy?

HWISEO: When my throat is sore, I drink plenty of warm water. If it worsens, I prioritize rest and take a day off. I manage my practice sessions and schedule according to the health of my vocal cords.

Q: You've stated your desire to be "artists whom you can trust while listening." How will you know when you have reached this goal?

RIINA: I believe we'll know we've reached our goal when people begin to take notice of our song releases and give our music a listen. This marks our success as trusted singers, known for the quality of our songs.

Q: Will there be a third chapter to the H1-KEYnote project? What can you tell us about the next stories you plan to tell?

RIINA: Though the songs "Thinkin' About You" and "Deeper" are part of the H1-KEYnote project, they talk about two very different things. While we can't disclose the narratives of our upcoming releases, rest assured that they will carry forward the essence of the project, showcasing fresh vocal expressions and styles. Q: What do you hope that the listeners can learn about H1-KEY through the H1-KEYnote project?

HWISEO: Maintain an optimistic approach during tough times rather than being negative about it. By focusing on small moments of joy in your daily life, you can gradually enhance your overall happiness, even if it's just a little bit each day.

Ha Sungwoon in GQ Korea

No one comes out of the Korean military unchanged. Here Ha Sungwoon talks about his experience of enlistment and how much contact from friends outside meant to him while he was serving. It seems that men that have already been through it, understand this, and make the effort to stay in touch.

However, before you go in, it is difficult to imagine how simple small gestures can make so much difference to the serving soldier. He talks about how Jimin also came to that realisation and apologised to him for not being in contact more often before his own enlistment. This is BTS's reality right now. I hope their group chat gives them consolation and that their friends outside are checking in on the regular.
