무서운 이야기

우리집 앞뜰은 앞집의 뒤뜰이고, 앞집과 우리집 두 집이 뜰을 함께 공유한다.

앞집 까까머리 여자애가 (에이드리엔) 가꿔논 귤색 매리골드가 퍼런 저녁 어스름에도 알전구처럼 빛나고 나는 아침마다 뜰에 나가 내 열무 이파리에 난 구멍을 세어보며 정원에서 튀어오르는 메뚜기를 의심한다. 시월 가을비가 내리고 나니 매리골드 빛깔도 한물 가시고 열무가 자라는 비닐하우스에는 아침일찍 김이 서린다. 

오늘은 추석 달님이 휘영청 말갛게 떠서 달무지개까지 보일 지경이었는데, 앞집에 제이크가 엇그저께 새로 구매한 앙부일구같이 생긴 동고란 화롯가에  앞집녀석들, 우리집 녀석들 모두 둘러앉았다. 고구마도 호일에 싸서 가져오고, 소시지랑 마시멜로도 야금야금 꺼내와서 꼬치에 끼워 구워먹으며 만담을 했다.

드문드문 산발적인 이야기를 제각각 하다가, 퉁퉁한 소시지를 한 세 개쯤 먹어해치우고 고구마 껍데기가 시커매질때 즈음 내가 할로윈도 곧인데 무서운 얘기 없느냐고 물었다. 세인트 루이스에서 정원사를 하다온 조가 누나와 살던 아파트 지하에서 흑인 귀신을 본 것 같다는 얘기로 시작해서 제이크가 옛날 룸메이트 여자친구가 귀신들려서 세면대 수도꼭지가 제멋대로 열렸다느니 하는 소리를 하다가 나도 슬쩍 끼어들었다. 옛날 아사를 만날 때 아사 짐이 있던 산호세의 제일 오래된 건물에 있던 부부 귀신 이야기도 하고 (나도 딱 한 번 가봤던 건물이다. 빅토리아풍의 온통 마호가니색깔 나무로 장식된 오래된 3층인가 되는 건물인데, 옛날에 2층에 살던 부부중 남편이 마누라를 욕조에서 쏴죽이고 자살했다나. 그러���나서 지금까지도 2층 오��스에 전깃불이 제멋대로 켜졌다 꺼지고 욕조가 있던 욕실에서는 아무도 없는데 발자국 소리가 쿵쿵거리며 나고 문이 제멋대로 여닫힌다고 옛날에 아사가 이야기 해줬다. 좋을 때였는데), 또 내 피앙세 대학친구가 볼티모어의 집에 도둑이 들어 머리맡에 두고 자던 카타나(일본도)를 꺼내 도둑을 찔러 죽이곤 정당방위로 풀려난 이야기도 했다. 

외진 미국 동부 시골마을에도 오싹하고 재미난 추석밤 화롯가가 있다. 이제 벌써 뜨건 군고구마를 까서 호- 불면 입에서도 유령같은 입김이 나는 계절.

Favourite Korean releases of 2018

Time to list my favourite albums for Japanese and Korean music from 2018. Previous years are here.

(G)I-dle - I am

It’s been a while I’ve been interested in getting to know k-pop rookies but this group changed that. HANN was one of my most listened songs in 2018 and I really liked this debut release too. LATATA got my attention the first time I listened to it and I’m glad I checked out the other songs. From this album I also liked 달라($$$) and DON’T TEXT ME.

Day6 - Shoot Me : Youth Part.1

These guys released a lot of songs this year just like last year. Also, they always seem to end up on my list... Shoot Me is very memorable with its ‘bang bang’ and ‘bullet bullet bullet’, the melody of 어쩌다 보니 makes me feel good and 원하니까 is a great example of their calmer songs.

Dreamcatcher - 악몽·Escape the ERA

I like it how they’ve continued to make songs with this darker theme. YOU AND I might’ve become my favourite title track by them. I liked 어느 별 from its first beats and Scar (이 더럽고도 추한...) is a song that fits to the group well, having those rock elements in it.

FT ISLAND - WHAT IF

The title song 여름밤의 꿈 is kinda laid back but also makes me wanna dance. Nowhere is such a good song from its first guitar melody and the strings in the chorus, awesome! Who I Am is a perfect song for Hongki’s voice (which I love a lot) and it has a great build up towards the end.

Jonghyun - Poet | Artist

This album is so good and very Jonghyun like so it makes me sad there won’t be more. It’s very bittersweet to listen to these songs and I wonder when there will be a time I can listen to them without getting all sad. That aside, 빛이 나 (Shinin'), 사람 구경 중 (Sightseeing) and 우린 봄이 오기 전에 (Before Our Spring) are my fav type of Jonghyun songs. Also, Take The Dive and 하루만이라도 (Just For A Day) are songs made for him.

Kim Sunggyu - 10 Stories

I love Nell so Sunggyu singing songs made by JW is such an awesome collaboration I’m glad we still get to hear it. The Nell vibe is very present with 머물러줘, 천사의 도시 and Sentimental. True Love reminds me of older pop songs (in a good way). Sorry is my favourite from the album and the emotional chorus always gets me.

Key - FACE

I’m one of those people who have liked Key’s voice the best in SHINee. He may not be the most talented singer but I’ve liked the sound of his vocals so this album was long waited! The music style fits him very well but it’s nothing new since the feat with Axodus happened in 2015. I especially like both title songs 센 척 안 해 (One of Those Nights) (Feat. Crush) and Forever Yours (Feat. 소유). My other favourites are Honest, Chemicals and I Will Fight (Feat. 빈첸 (VINXEN)).

Oh My Girl - REMEMBER ME

Both of the mini albums this year are worth checking out but the only reason this is better release than Secret Garden is the song Twilight. It is a perfect pop song, there’s nothing off! I do like 불꽃놀이 (Remember Me) but I think Twilight would’ve been a better title song... 메아리 also deserves a mention being such a sweet song.

SHINee - 'The Story of Light' Epilogue

Maybe I’m biased because it’s my SHINee boys again on this year’s list but I can’t help it that they make my type of music. Sadly of course my fav group is now down to four, at least physically. I’m thankful they decided to continue and gave me songs like 셀 수 없는 (Countless), 독감 (Who Waits For Love), 네가 남겨둔 말 (Our Page), I Want You and Chemistry which is my favourite from the album. 안녕 (You & I) has so touching lyrics by Key and Lock You Down is a perfect finish to this album with Jonghyun singing a song that’s not sad.
