hi! if you wouldn’t mind, could you please explain the words to say family members in korean, particularly paternal&maternal grandparents, and aunts and uncles? when i was researching, it came up that there are many words to say paternal uncle, such as calling a father’s unmarried younger brother 삼촌, and many more. if you don’t mind, could you please explain the differences and how often& when they are used in korea? it just seems really complex haha thank you for your time

Hi! This is Admin Yu here. The words to call family members in Korean are indeed quite tricky! So I will try to explain the basic words that we use often in real life.

외가 : Mother’s family

엄마 : mom / 어머니 : mother

외할아버지 : 엄마’s father = grandfather

외할머니 : 엄마’s mother = grandmother

외삼촌 : mother’s brother(older or younger)

외숙모 : 외삼촌’s wife

외사촌 : 외삼촌 and 외숙모’s son/daughter = cousin

이모 : mother’s sister(older or younger)

이모부 : 이모’s husband

이종사촌 : 이모 and 이모부’s son/daughter = cousin

친가 : Father’s family

아빠 : dad / 아버지 : father

(친)할아버지 : 아빠’s father = grandfather

(친)할머니 : 아빠’s mother = grandmother

큰아빠 : father’s older brother (큰 means big so it means big dad)

큰엄마 : 큰아빠’s wife (Big mom)

삼촌 : father’s younger brother

숙모 : 삼촌’s wife

사촌 : 큰아빠 and 큰엄마’s son/daughter & 삼촌 and 숙모’s son/daughter = cousin

고모 : father’s sister(older or younger)

고모부 : 고모’s husband

고종사촌 : 고모 and 고모부’s son/daughter = cousin

** In real life, we just tend to call 외사촌, 이종사촌, 고종사촌 as 사촌. 사촌 means cousin.

The words I listed above are the ones that are very very commonly used. Except for 사촌, who we just call by names or as 언니/누나 or 오빠/형, we use those terms when speaking with the family member. For example, we say “안녕하세요 이모!(Hello aunt!).”

And i understood this.

So if you don't know in Korean you call uncles samchon and cousins are your sachon, well the sam and sa in these words come from the numbers 3 and 4 respectively. So why are they assigned the 3 and 4 numbers on your family tree? Well according to T, the "branch" between you and your siblings is the first one (il-chon) the one between your parents the second one (i-chon) the one between your uncles is the third one (sam-chon) and cousins the fourth one (sa-chon). Simple right? Hahah

hoooww-fucking-ever why are aunts called 이모(imo, sisters of your mom ??) , 고모(older sister of your dad), 큰 엄마 (big mom, older sister of dad or wife of an older brother of your dad) 작은 엄마 (small mom, younger sister of a parent or wife of the younger sibling) 숙모 (same as small mom)

Why are nieces, nephews and/or younger cousins called 조카 (joka)??? What our your cousins' kids' called?? And what do they call you?? I mean I've heard T's cousin's kid's call him 사촌 (sa-chon) but by this numerical logic it doesn't make sense. Speaking of cousins they still refer to each other as eonnie, nunna, hyung or oppa so ??? Why did T start mentioning his grandparents siblings and then give up? How do my SIL and I fit in, in all this mess??

Its all very confusing and it was very bold of him to think he could explain, when he doesn't even know what he's saying and that i would understand when i don't even understand the American way.

이 영화 이제봤다. 요즘 옛날영화 다시보는 재미가 쏠쏠하다. 음악은 많이 들어봤지만, 원본을 본건 처음이다. 영상이 너무나 잔잔하고 예쁜. 특히, 숙모를 만나러 가는 장면에서의 인서트 샷은 또한번 여행뽐뿌를 주고 실존한 곳인지 너무나 궁금함이 가득했다.

숙모 역의 배우는 실제 파킨슨 병을 앓고 있었다는 뜻밖의 진실. 그리고 마이크와 테리는 실제 부부로 지금까지 잘 살고 있다는. 모든게 실존처럼 여겨지는 영화, 그냥 가슴이 따듯해졌다. 피아노 연주하는 장면은 그야말로 명장면. 멋지다
