a thoughtful hum is elicited at the girl's words, and his gaze rakes over her in something that one might almost mistake for admiration; her words seem to be truthful enough. he finds no hints of deception, no sign that her heart is truly gripped by fear despite the words at her lips. he wishes he could find it within himself to be as brave as her. what a silly thing to wish. he averts his gaze from her fully now, pivoting away from her so he might look out the balcony instead. the sun sits high in the sky, casting its golden glow across the city. he tips his head as if lost in thought, before he glances over his shoulder at her once more. ❛     you do not fear even death?     ❜

they have come to only spend time together in shared silence, but aegon finds that he rather prefers it over what used to be the unspoken hatred between mother and son. the silence is better than a hand striking his cheek or being scolded, even if he cannot shake himself from the idea that she is judging him even now in their shared solitude. her eyes bore into him with steel, as though he can feel her disappointment on his skin like a brand. war looms as a threat on the horizon that he cannot shake, and with it comes a new fear that he didn't realize had such a grasp on his very heart. it nearly paralyzes him; he is what she made him, grief personified, a boy with a crown on his head that is too heavy for him to support.

❛     i find myself wondering if father changed his mind at the end as some sort of punishment,     ❜ he confesses, a mere whisper into the suffocating silence that stretches out between them. mother and child, the womb and the sacrifice, the shepherd and the lamb led into its own slaughter. he reaches for his goblet of wine, not that he needs any more when he's already admitting to such thoughts that plague him. gaze of amethyst drifts upwards to meet hers, and for the first time since boyhood, he is a child seeking the comfort of his mother. ❛     i do not wish to rule. i wish to live.     ❜
