Okay okay catching up on Bleach because I was putting it off...

So the soul king has an actual name now and it's apparently Adnyeus(?*)[アドナイェウス] which at a glance I thought was some kind of weird mashup of Hebrew Adonai[אֲדֹנָי] and Latin deus as a kind of play on Yhwach's name being based on the tetragrammaton. But actually it's just the name Aidoneus[Ἀϊδωνεύς] which was an old epithet for the Greek Hades, supposedly meaning "The Unseen" which somewhat superficially fits for the Soul King as a king of the dead/underworld.

*(I have no idea where anyone is getting these romanizations I see flying around...)

It's actually not the first time the name has come up. some eagle eyed fans caught that what appears to be "ADNYEUS" was shown back in episode 6 of TYBW in Ryuuken's notes, above the illustration of the castle Silbern. And then at the end of the previous season the anime added a chant to Yhwach's Auswählen that ran:

Kakageyo Gin no Monshou, Haiiro no Sougen, Hikari ni Uzumoreta, Enkan no Michi, Menou no Gankyu, Ougon no Shita, Zugai no Sakazuki, ADNYEUS no Hitsugi. Kakageru mono wa, Omae no Shinzou: AUSWÄHLEN [掲げよ 銀の紋章 灰色の草原 光に埋もれた円環の途 瑪瑙の眼球 黄金の舌 頭蓋の盃 アドナイェウスの棺 掲げるものは お前の心臓 聖別(アウスヴェーレン)] "Raise up Crest of Silver, Ash-colored(gray) Meadow, Circular Road hidden in (the) Light, Eye(s) of Agate, Tongue of Gold, Grail* of Skull, Coffin of Adnyeus. That which is Raised up is Your Heart: Auswählen."

*notably in one of Uryuu's German chants, the Japanese word for a [杯]:"sake cup" was paired with the German word Gral:"Grail", and [盃] and [杯] are alternate kanji for the same word. At the most literal the chant in Japanese just uses the word for "sake cup" like the one he uses for the schrift eucharist, but I feel like the more implicitly western imagery evoked by "skull Grail" or maybe "...chalice" is more in line with the ongoing aesthetic of Quincy spells

I'm not actually in a position to go doing a real deep dive on this but it does seem like at a glance there are associations with that alternate title with a specific incongruous variation of the god of the underworld--that is to say: characterizations of him under this epithets are not consistent with other more common interpretstions-- where he's actually got a lot of strong sun iconography. This of course maps almost perfectly with a bunch of stuff I've ranted on about a few different times in my Bleach ramblings.

Incidentally it is also the scientific namesake of the Papilio aidoneus... a black butterfly... In the first place Bleach's hell-butterflies were already a play on the real world association of butterflies and death, often either as psychopomps or themselves the souls of the dead. That they tie back in to the Soul King himself isn't too big a stretch.

As for this "triplet world" thing... We were already told that Hueco Mundo isn't actually it's own formal realm, it's the interstitial realm that just naturally exists in the space between one world and the next. So it kinda annoys me that this feels like it's really only being acknowledged because after the fact it's just where a big chunk of Bleach's plot happened, rather than actually being cosmologically on par with the other two.

Anyway the translations going around I notice are a little sloppy, mostly in that a few are clearly just machine translated and so ignored the use of Bleach specific terminology, like "reishi" and "kishi" so here's my quick breakdown of it (thank god it's short...)

原初の海から分かたれた尸魂界,現世, 虚圏の三つの世界。 The Three Worlds of Soul Society, This (the mortal) World, Hueco Mundo divided* from the Sea of Origin. 遍く魂魄の流れを司る礎であり, かつ世界の楔たる存在によって, The universal flow of spirits is the foundation to control, as well as the lynchpin of the world which is due to existence, 霊子の世界,器子の世界,砂の楽土の三世界が分離され, the Three Worlds of The World of Reishi, The World of Kishi, The Paradise of Sand are detached*, 『生』と『死』が隔てられた。 "Life" and "Death" were isolated*.

*so interestingly all three of these different words could be translated into english as "separated" but seem to be fairly distinct contextual differences: the first means like cutting one big thing up into smaller things the "A came from B" dynamic being the focus, the second means to be separated out almost like being categorized, and the third is to be isolated or alienated.

So first it's saying the three worlds came from one sea of origin, and that the flow of spirits between those three worlds is the key to existence being what it is, which is to say three distinct realms where death and life are these things that can never coexist. All of which is stuff we really already knew.

Also we're supposed to have just completely forgotten about Hell since it's not the current plot line, I guess? If anything the Three Worlds should be Soul Society, the Material World, and Hell, with Hueco Mundo as the interstitial void/aether, like it was originally defined as. That would at least map more sensibly onto the buddhist 3 realms of

Form(Humans & animals: those bound by their physicality)

Formless(Deva & Asura: those who exist in a hightened mental/spiritual state)

Desire(Preta & those in Hell: those defined by their strong need for what they lack)

Maybe that only real point of interest is the reference to Hueco Mundo as suna no rakudo[砂の楽土], a "paradise of sand." In this voice I think the idea is that if life and death being separate realms is a bad thing that Yhwach seeks to rectify, then by being an inbetween realm, Hueco Mundo is a paradise, because it's a place of neither life nor death? But if it is a place of rest and comfort then I wonder if that doesn't validate my thoughts on the Vastolorde being the natural path of development for a soul in reincarnation afterall?

That aside, this mostly just lines up with existing Buddhist/Hindu parallels that were always pretty obviously implied but not so directly touched on. Once again things I've babbled about in some form or another already... I'm not about to go digging them all up right now.

(Potentially) new information from the Spy x Family exhibit book!

Okay, I’ve done some digging around and not gonna lie, some information in there has me excited. I can’t read Japanese so I took photos and put them through translate, so it’s not the most accurate, and please take this post with a grain of salt. Here we go!

Translations are more than welcome! Feel free to use these photos and feel free to DM me for clearer photos. I would also love to know what this all means haha. Japanese “raw” text is taken from Google translate and may be inaccurate to what is actually shown in the photos.

✩ The SxF world apparently has no Christmas!

I’ve heard claims of it, and here’s a picture I took.

Google translate tells me that there’s no Christmas in the SxF world but he tried to create a Christmas-like atmosphere? Not sure but it would align with other people’s claims.

✩ Yuri apparently had a girlfriend in a rough draft!

This is Endo’s handwriting so the machine can’t recognise the words easily, but I think the woman in the bottom of Yuri’s sheet is his “girlfriend”? And Google translate tells me she’s Yuri’s “weakness” and Twilight might use her against Yuri / take advantage of the girlfriend? This is a very interesting idea that didn’t get used in canon (yet?). I think in canon, Yuri is popular but he’s too devoted to his sister. A new significant other of a prominent character would shake things up. Especially when it comes to Yuri, a member of the SSS.

By the way, Yuri’s potential designs are kind of cool. I like the ponytail.

✩ Apparently “Oscar” was one of Twilight’s potential names! + Early Twilight designs

I think we know Yor was originally short for Yorlanda (this is in the upper sheet). There’s a whole list of names beside Twilight and the name Oscar オスカー appeared frequently. There are also more names that I can’t decipher.

✩ Designs of some potential WISE agents! (And early Fiona)

Fiona’s sheet (next to Yuri’s) was titled “WISE spy (female)” and now we have a sheet titled “WISE spy (male)”. Was Fiona a placeholder spy that made it to the main cast? Or will this “male spy” end up having significance too? The two smaller heads at the left are apparently Twilight’s associates. Also, a Melinda sketch. Not gonna lie, the male spy feels kinda cute. Hope he’s not completely scrapped.

✩ Endo’s interview!

I feel like I should put this earlier but I was distracted with the Christmas / Yuri’s potential girlfriend thing. This is at the very end of the book. Apparently Endo was influenced by the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This interview was apparently taken in March 2023. I think it’s fairly important so I’ll wait for a proper translation before saying anything else.

✩ Comments on Donovan, Melinda, Redacted, and Sylvia!

These two pages are together and I found it significant because Endo discusses the SxF themes. (My notes are not direct translations.) Apparently:

Sylvia’s scene in Mission 20 is Endo’s favourite scene, and he was looking at materials related to war for a long time and wondered if he could make use of it. [JP below]

Donovan’s statement of “in the end, people will never understand each other” (rough paraphrase) is the theme of the work. And Endo wanted to create a feeling of Donovan being the final boss. He didn’t plan on arranging it from the beginning, but he thinks the Desmonds are a good contrast to the Forgers. (Does this mean the Forgers think people will understand each other?) [JP below]

The chapters on Twilight’s past coincided with the anime so Endo thought it was a good idea to explore Twilight’s past. [JP below]

Melinda is described as “friendly” (?) even though she is dignified. A positive description of Melinda… interesting. What’s also interesting is that after she learns that Yor is the mother of the child who got into a fight with Damian, she “shows interest”. Melinda, what do you want with Anya? [JP below]

I personally think these two pages contain hints about the mystery of the featured characters and would love to know what it means :D

There’s a lot more Yor but again the image limit is constricting me. I really like the Bond designs, they’re funny and he’s just a chonky little boi :)

Which apparently means: “a rare flirting (?) scene, I wish Yor was drunk all year long”

?!??! Twiyor?!! Hello!! I cannot resist mentioning this one, this is one of my favourite Twiyor / SxF scenes. Are we gonna get more drunk Yor? More Twiyor? More flirting? I’m excited now.

今冬は氷瀑を撮るために下見がてら出かける。比較的暖かい日だった。10時半ごろに入山記録をつける。山道に入ってから鼻からの呼吸がしにくい事に気付く。脚の筋肉も硬直し背負っているカメラバッグすら不自然な重さを感じる。10分程度歩いただけで全身から汗が吹き出す。アウターを脱ぎ水分を補給し精神的な立て直しを図る。今までの10分が周囲の環境を意識する余裕がなかった。深呼吸し心臓の音が着地するまでじっと待つこと5分、意識を外側に向ける事で動けるような気がした。苔は緑というよりも黄色に近く、赤から茶色に変わっていく落葉が目立ち、紅葉のシーズンであればさぞ美しかった事だろう。小さな落石などで足場が悪く慎重に選びながら歩みを進める。あらゆるところに落石注意の表記がある。ただ、どう注意したら良いかも分からないため、止まらず通り過ぎるようにする。さらに10分程度で滝が出迎えてくれる。不思議なもので大きな景色を目の当たりにすると、今まで荒かった呼吸が落ち着いている事に気付く。凍てつき具合からすると10%程度だろうか。水量も少ないが、行き届く範囲はしっかりと凍っている。凍結している岩を見ると落ち葉は赤い活力を保ったまま、氷の下で眠っている。そんな景色を眺めていると親子が登って来て声をかける。見知らぬ人であっても誰かがいる事に温もりを感じる事ができた。おそらく自分の中にある不安を少しでも消したかったのだと思う。足場は凍てつきもあり、撮影中に幾度となく滑った。次回来る際には軽アイゼンになってくるだろう。帰路に着く途中に岩に張り付いているまばらな苔が気になり撮影しているとジオラマを連想させる。小人の物語を写真の中に編んでいく。小さな世界の中では蟻が猪に、カマキリは熊に見えるのかもしれない。命は永続的に続くものではないが、普段の安寧した場所にいると自分の存在がボヤけてしまう事がある。本当の世界は地味で生々しいが、いかに丁寧に生きるかが人生の張りになるような気がしている。次、この地に訪れる際には準備を整えて臨みたい。

50周年なんて本当に途方もない…。。それでも精力的にどんどん挑戦して、御自分の世界を広げていく車田先生は本当に凄いなと改めて思います。

本当に未だこうした号に声をかけて頂いてありがたい限りです。

七月になり、ようやく広樹のギブスが取れ、サポーターだけになった。通学は自転車に戻り、時折ラガーシャツにも袖を通した。

一方、克也は広樹が辞めないで済んだことに胸を撫で下ろしたが、未だ自分自身の気持ちを言えずにいた。浩志からは、

「いつまでもウジウジしてンじゃねぇよ！ チ◯ポ付いてるンだろ！？」

と一喝されていたが、男同士が好きになることに対して罪責感があった。未だ、同性愛が世間的にタブーとされていた時代である。浩志が大学生だった昭和三十年代の後半と比べると、五十年代の前半は女装したり女言葉を使ったりする芸能人も多く活躍したが、やはり偏見はあった。

夏休みになり、秋の試合に向けて練習にも力が入った。浩志も普段はポロシャツとジャージーと言う格好だったが、時折ラガーシャツとラグビーショーツでグランドに現れた。そんな姿に漫画研究会の利江子たちは、

「あれぇ〜？ ヒロシったらラガーマンになってるぅ！」

「きゃッ！ なんで、あんなにラグパン短いの！？」

「いゃァ〜ん、何か誘ってない？」

「ラグパンって、パンツ穿かないンでしょ！？ エッチぃ〜！」

と、相変わらず盛り上がっていた。そんな彼女たちに浩志は、

「鶴田ッ！ 一応、穿いてるぞ！」

とラグパンの裾をチラッと上げてみせた。何故、アタシの名前を知ってるのとびっくりしながら、

「ヒロシ、このスケベっ！」

と笑い転げた。他の同級生は黄色い声を上げていた。

休憩時間になり、広樹は予め作っておいた麦茶の入ったやかんを二つ、ベンチのある日陰に置き、部員に声をかけた。皆、待ってましたと言わんばかりに詰め寄って来て、麦茶の注がれたプラスチックのコップを手に取った。浩志も蛇口の水を頭から浴び、

「このまま昼飯にするぞ」

と、眼鏡を片手に持ちながら首に掛けたタオルで頭を拭き、彼は校舎に戻って行った。

その間、日陰で弁当を食べたり芝生に横になったりと、それぞれ休んでいた。克也もケヤキの幹に寄りかかった。視界には空になったやかんや、プラスチックのコップを片付ける広樹の姿があった。なかなか告白できずにいる克也は、

『今なら言えそうな気がする』

と立ち上がった。そっと近づき、広樹の手を取った。

「加藤先輩…？」

「ちょっと来て」

そう言われるがまま、広樹は克也に手を引っ張られた。連れて行かれたのは部室だった。窓を全開にしていたが殆んど風が入らず、蒸し暑かった。十二畳はあるかないかの室内で、克也は広樹と見つめ合った。両手を握りしめ、

「額田君、好きだ」

と克也は唇を奪った。身体を密着させ、広樹の背部に両腕を回し、愛撫した。広樹は嫌がることなく、奪われた唇が克也のものと一体になる様な感覚を得た。

ラグパンの中で股間が隆起していくの互いに感じながら、二人はブリーフ越しに恥部を弄った。内腿から汗が垂れ、次第に濡れていった。克也はこれまで抑えてきた感情を露にしながら喘ぎ、広樹のラグパンを脱がせた。

「あぁん、はァ、ああん…」

鼻息を粗くさせながら、二人はブリーフを膝まで下げ、肉棒の裏側を合わせながらしごいた。

「あッ、あん、ああん…」

先走り汁で手指を汚しながら、克也は広樹のラガーシャツを胸元までたくし上げ、乳房を咥えた。

「…そのままエッチしちゃった」

「へぇ〜、良かったね」

何も考えずにこう言ったが、否、「エッチしちゃった」って、何が？ ようやくコトの真意に気付いた浩志は、

「ハァァァァァァ〜！？」

と上半身を起こした。

「犯っちまったのか！？」

「声が大きいよ！」

「…お前、溜まってたンだな」

「何か、気持ちが大きくなっちゃって…」

克也は、徐々に真顔になっていく浩志の様子に、嗚呼、怒られるのかなと不安になった。しかし、浩志はバンッと彼の背中を叩き、

「よくやった！ これでこそ男だ！ 気持ち良かったっぺ！？」

と、寧ろ喜んだ。何だ、この先生！？と克也は呆然とした。そして、浩志は克也の股間を鷲づかみにし、

「イイぞ、イイぞ！ その調子でガンガン攻めろ！ 若いってイイなァ〜！」

と揺さぶった。

「や、やめッ…！ おしっこ漏れちゃう！」

もし誰かいたら問題になるなと、克也は思った。

この日を機に、克也と広樹は浩志から色々と「性のてほどき」を受けた。時折、部室で『さぶ』や『アドン』などのゲイ雑誌を渡され、ア◯ルセックスの仕方も山奥のモーテルで「伝授」された。克也は、

「オレは純愛が好きなのに！」

と心の中で叫びながらも、沸々を込み上げてくる肉欲に負けて広樹と絡んだ。広樹も、克也を所謂「セックスシンボル」としてしか見られなくなり、ラグビーショーツから覗くブリーフに生唾を飲んだ。克也の家も若宮町にあった為、水府橋の下で毎日の様に愛し合った。

一方、ラグビー部の成績は劇的に飛躍した。これまで県大会で二回戦以上は勝ち進められなかったのが、関東大会でも上位の方まで成績を残した。他県のシード校を打ち破った時には、浩志は嬉しさのあまりに、

「これも皆、克也と広樹の『愛』あってこそだ！」

と口走り、二人は火消しに追われた。

そんな克也と広樹だが、個別に利江子から漫画のネタに色々とインタビューを受けた。あまりにしつこいので、

「イイじゃん、愛してるンだから。好きにさせてくれよ」

と広樹は言い切ったが、

「えぇ〜！？ そんなにラブラブなのぉ〜！？ だったらイイじゃ〜ん！」

と、寧ろ彼女の創作意欲に火をつけてしまった。

広樹は浩志との思い出を「熱弁」した。途中、浩二は笑いをこらえるのに骨折り、

「う、嘘ッ！？」

「それ、本当ですか！？」

「高校生だったのに！？」

云々と、何度も聞き直した。

二人が話している間、大樹は座布団を半分にして折り、枕の様にして眠っていた。寝息を立てている我が子を気にしながら、広樹は目頭をハンカチで押さえた。今は高校生だった二人を浩志が手を出し、淫乱にさせたことを信じられないと思っているが、その数年後には��学生になったばかりの大樹をまさか自分がそうさせることになろうとは、考えてもいなかった。

午後九時を回り、広樹は大樹を起こした。

「長居をしてしまってすみません。告別式には妻が来ますので…。私、K百貨店に勤めておりまして、明日から秋に催される物産展の関係で北海道へ行くンです。克也、否、加藤さんは通夜には行けるそうです」

「K百貨店にお勤めですか？ 大変ですね。道中、気を付けて」

玄関で広樹と大樹を見送ると、茶の間に戻って浩二は残っていたお茶を飲み干し、片付けた。徐々に、彼は浩志との永遠の別離がきているのだなと実感した。

オリハルコン（古希: ὀρείχαλκος, oreikhalkos, オレイカルコス、羅: orichalcum, オリカルクム）は、古代ギリシア・ローマ世界の文献に登場する、銅系の合金と考えられる金属である。最も有名な例としてプラトンが『クリティアス』の中で記述した、アトランティスに存在したという幻の金属が挙げられる。古代ギリシア時代の文献でこの言葉が指す意味は多様ではあるが、真鍮や青銅などの銅系の合金を意味すると思われる状況が多く、帝政ローマ期以降は考古学的にも明確に真鍮を指す。

日本特有の「オリハルコン」という発音・呼び名は、ギリシア語の単数対格形 ὀρείχαλκον (oreichalkon) の、現代ギリシア語読みに近いが、下述する経緯から、それほど深い意味があるわけではなく、単に英語読みの「オリカルカム」を日本人が発音しやすいように加工（カをハに、語尾のカムをコンに）した結果、たまたまこういう形になっただけだと考えられる。

日本ではこの特殊な呼び名が、手塚治虫のアニメ版『海のトリトン』（1972年）辺りから使われ始め、その語呂の良さから（「武器・防具の素材となる神秘的な硬い金属」という設定と共に）様々な漫画やアニメ、日本製のゲームでも採用されて普及・定着した。orihalcon, orichalcon などと綴られることもあるが、これは「オリハルコン」が登場する日本製のゲームが国外へ輸出された際に生まれた新しい綴りである。

原典であるプラトン『クリティアス』等の翻訳においては、単数主格形 ὀρείχαλκος (oreichalkos) の古代ギリシア語読みで、「オレイカルコス」と表記されることが一般的である。

語源は、オロス（ὄρος, oros；山）のカルコス（χαλκός, khalkos；銅）。『ホメーロス風讃歌』や、ヘーシオドスの『ヘラクレスの盾』などの詩に初めて登場するが、これらの作品では真鍮（黄銅、銅と亜鉛の合金）、青銅（銅と錫の合金）、赤銅（銅と金の合金）、天然に産出する黄銅鉱（銅と鉄の混合硫化物）や、あるいは銅そのものと解釈・翻訳されている[1]。ラテン語では、オリカルクム（orichalcum）アウリカルクム（aurichalcum；金の銅）と呼ばれる。英語ではこれを英語訛りでオリカルカムと発音する。

少なくともローマ帝政期以降の文献では、アウリカルクムが「真鍮」を意味するようになったことは確実で、セステルティウスやドゥポンディウスなどの真鍮製銀貨の原料として言及されるようになる[2]。現代ギリシア語のオリハルコス（ορείχαλκος , oreichalkos）やイタリア語のオリカルコ（oricalco）は「真鍮」を意味する。

金属が希少であった時代には、金の代用として祭祀用に金に似た色に調合された黄銅が神秘的な金属として用いられていた例が多い。時代が下がって銅合金の生産量が増えてくると通貨などに使われるようになり、神秘性は薄れていった。

逆に神秘性を高めて架空の金属へと昇華したのが、プラトンの『クリティアス』による記述とそこから派生した資料に記述されているものである。これらの記述は、他の文献での記述とは隔絶した存在となっており、全く別の架空の存在とみなせる。プラトンの『クリティアス』で扱われる伝説上の幻の金属としてのオレイカルコスは、今では名前のみが伝わっている幻の金属として登場している。神秘性を持った架空の存在であるがゆえに様々な解釈と想像を生み、ファンタジー小説などの創作物に登場するに至った。

The Ogham alphabet has 5 vowels. The number 5 is the sacred number of the 'White Goddess'. Like all five vowel trees, pine is a female tree. And it is also the first vowel A, the tree of birth.

In ancient Greece, the pine tree was the goddess of the moon and dedicated to Artemis, who was responsible for the birth of children.The birth of Christ is celebrated on 25 December, and the Christmas tree decorated on this day is Norway spruce. The spruce is a member of the pine tree family. Although Christ's birthday is now celebrated on 25 December, it is believed that in earlier times our ancestors celebrated the birth of the Son of God on 23 December.

23 December marked the beginning of the 'Half Year of Light' and the birth of the "Son of God, the King of the Flourishing Half Year", and a gift of the wisdom of our ancestors.

On the winter solstice, druids (Ref2) in Europe lit large bonfires of pine and yew. Around the same time, the festival of the Druid Queen, Druantia, also took place. These large bonfires, which were built on the winter solstice, were passed on to the Yule Log. While the Yule festival lasted, people lit candles on pine trees and decorated them with glittering objects. The Christmas tree is the successor to this custom.

The ancients believed that the pine cones were cleverly guided by magical powers, as they spiralled and followed the same clockwise direction on their trunks as the earth around the sun. Yellow pollen was utilised in the 'money-accumulation spell' as yellow attracts gold. Pine branches are said to prevent evil from entering the house if hung over doors and windows, and old people are said to be rejuvenated if they carry pine cones.

Futhermore, Native Americans put a bag full of pine needles under their pillows on the floor when they have insomnia. In ancient Egypt, doctors in the Pharaoh's service used pine tar and turpentine oil to treat pneumonia.

The ancients learnt from the towering pines the importance of looking at things objectively and from a broad perspective. Pine teaches that you have to be positive about things, correct mistakes immediately and chase responsibility yourself.

オガム文字には5つの母音がある。数字の5は「白い女神」の聖なる数字。5つの母音のすべての木がそうであるように、マツも女性の木、そして最初の母音のA、誕生の木でもある。

古代ギリシャでは、マツは月の女神で、子供の誕生をつかさどるアルテミスに捧げられた。キリストの誕生を祝う12月25日、この日に飾るクリスマス・ツリーはノルウェートウヒ。トウヒはマツ科の木である。現在、キリストの誕生日は12月25日とされているが、その昔、祖先は12月23日に神の御子の誕生を祝っていたとされる。12月23日は「光の半年間」の幕開けと「神の子・盛りゆく半年の王」の誕生を一緒の祝う先祖の知恵の産物であった。

冬至の日、ヨーロッパのドルイド（参照2）は松やイチイの大きな焚き火をした。これは、太陽神を冥界から呼び戻し、この世に再生させるためであった。ユール祭が続く間、人々はマツの木に蝋燭を灯したり、きらきら光るものを飾ったりした。それは、生命の源である太陽神の聖なる光を守るためであった。また、その光は暗い冬の間も常緑樹の植物に蓄えられると古代人は信じていたからだ。その習慣を受け継いだのがクリスマスツリーである。

松ぼっくりは、螺旋を描きながら、太陽の周りをめぐる地球と同じように時計回りに幹につくため、魔法の力を巧みに導く存在であると、古代人は信じていた。黄色い花粉は黄色がゴールドを引き寄せるとして「お金がたまる呪い」に活用された。マツの枝はドアや窓にかけると邪悪なものが家の中に侵入できなくなり、老人は松ぼっくりを持ち歩くとして若返ると言われている。

さらに、ネイティブ・アメリカンは不眠症のとき、マツの葉が詰めた袋を枕の下に敷いて床につく。古代エジプトでは、ファラオに仕える医者が肺炎の治療に松脂とテレビン油を使ったという。

古代人は広い視野に立って客観的、長期的にものを見る重要性を、高くそびえる松に学んできた。物事には前向きに取り組み、過ちはすぐに正し、責任は自分で追わなければならないと、マツは教えている。
