Genji Shimada Relationships/Intimacy Headcanons
Levels of intimacy for shipping/relationship purposes as headcannoned by me.
Under the cut, cause just like my Hanzo, I go into detail, but even more so here with Genji since I write him in varying points of his life. Admittedly its really complex and situational, so brace yourself, this gets long!
All SFW, angst and fluff included!
Sexuality: I HC him straight. He's definitely been experimental a bit in his past, though.
Young Genji:
Theme song: Death of a Strawberry - Dance Gavin Dance
Lvl 1) Someone's interested in him? Well, it's not the first time and certainly not the last. He's on a high horse and doesn't really filter his words and actions. He plays the fuckboy card damn well, it's all anyone sees when he's outside the walls of his estate. It will be no different towards someone who's actively trying to pursue him at first. They'll have to catch his attention for reasons other than the bullshit he's actively involved in. He'll just assume they're the same as everyone else if they show more interest in the delinquency/partying and his family name/history than him personally.
Lvl 2) They caught his attention by consistently showing interest in him, and just him. It likely won't be terribly pleasant for the pursuer because of his cheeky quips as he catches on, cause he does, and quickly, (or maybe they're into that, who knows) but persistence is an eye catcher. He'll be more inclined to talk to them.
Lvl 3) He's seeking them out specifically to talk to, hang out with and bother, trying to pull at their strings. He's pulling a bunch of tricks out his sleeve with a playful attitude to keep them on him. He'll slow down on certain activities, not holding as much of an interest in those things anymore as he does in the other person, now holding a bit of hope for the possibilities. Yet, that hope now grows with fear. He still holds his façade very strongly and struggles to be truly vulnerable. He'll need something to break him out of it/give him confidence that it's ok to show himself.
Lvl 3.5) A confession wouldn't really phase him, per-se, since he's been confessed to before, but as long as genuine time and effort has been given up front, he'll be more receptive, yet still clinging to his mask and won't put it down for just anyone. It'll either have to be forced off him or guided off. Depending on which path the other chooses to take with him, he'll respond accordingly, and this is either a dead end, or the start of something pretty wild. (Or it could already have been, he's a bit of a thrill seeker, so there you go.)
Lvl 4) So, he accepted their confession. Returned it, even. Whether he asks or they do, now he's giving it a shot. There's a crack in the front he's put on for so long, and out of it seeps heaps of genuine passion. He hasn't given up all of his habits, though, and still smokes (primarily), drinks (not as much), etc. Whether or not this is an issue to his s/o is interchangeable and he will accommodate where he can for them. They're something truly different and he slowly grows more attached with each day that passes.
Lvl 5) He's attentive, protective (very, considering his occupation) and god does he know how to love. He keeps disappearing from his home when he's not worked to the bone training or has to do anything for clan purposes to see his s/o, basically living a double life. That is until the canon event happens where he fights his brother and is struck down by him.
Note: if the s/o truly knows the extent of his family history and business, if their relationship is secret or not and more is up to the plot lines.
Blackwatch Genji:
Theme song: WANNA DIE - n9neful & WHYTYLXR (Lyrics)
To be completely honest with you, he's not interested in a relationship at this point in his life. He'd be thrown off and even upset at anyone showing romantic interest in him when he's like this, and genuinely would wish better for them. He's got too much on his mind and is violently angry. He's really not going to be able to be pulled out of that right now, but they're welcome to try.
In the case it's an old flame/the person he was with before he became a cyborg, they won't know who he is instantly. He will try to keep it that way. If they do find out, he'll fight tooth and nail to keep them out of his life beyond anything that's necessary for several obvious reasons.
Note: Whether or not he recognizes its the old flame/partner is also up to plot.
Current Genji:
Theme song: Sunset Memories - Tales of the Forgotten
Lvl 1) He doesn't really pay attention to anyone but his direct circle in Overwatch, so getting his attention is a little tough unless he's worked with directly. Also, if it's a verse based in canon, he's interested in Mercy, so any feelings would be unrequited, anyhow. However, in a verse where that's not the case, it'll definitely start with him not being interested in anyone. A friendship would have to build first, so obviously the interested party would need to introduce themselves somehow.
Lvl 2) Now he at least knows who they are, they're talking here and there, maybe they're a fellow agent and go on missions with him, it's purely business related. He's kind. Quiet. Sweet. The best way to appeal to him is to share his calm, and if they respond well, he will in return.
Lvl 3) The peace he begins to feel with the other grows to friendship. He appreciates their presence and keeps in contact. Nothing romantic, purely platonic. As friendship grows and time passes, the closer they get, the more attentive he becomes to them.
Lvl 3.5) They confess. He's known. If things have gone well up to this point, it's possible he has thought about it at least a little, himself, and isn't against it. If nothing has sparked at this point beyond the friendship, he'll keep it where it is and it will not progress. However if they did click, he will admit he is open to the opportunity if they are.
Lvl 4) He's got them & they've got him. Adding more romantic actions to their relationship, he's always near by when he can be. He's their support. Their protector. Their lover. He trusts them with his mask off, with his life, and will often show any physical affection he can as long as they're ok with it. He's not an incredibly jealous person, but will make it known just who he is if necessary.
Overall, in order:
Quality Time - (time spent in silence, in noise, anywhere, he wants to be there with them.)
Physical Touch - (even though he can only feel it on certain parts of his person like his face and anywhere the armor melds with his skin, he craves that because it reminds him he's still human.)
Gift giving - (he adores making them smile and wants to spoil them now and again.)
Words of affirmation - (voiced affection is important to hear, though he'll always place what's shown over what's said.)
Acts of service - (he never expects much to be done for him since he can very much handle himself, but it absolutely warms his heart when it is done.)

MUSE AS A DEITY.
rules: think carefully about your character and their development through their journey (canon or oc) within their story. fill out the chart and tag whoever you want! repost, do not reblog.
tagged by: @technotranquility <3
tagging: it’s been a while (8 months ^^;), so... steal freely! Just do it and say I tagged you ;)
a deity of: lone warriors, travelers, martial arts and martial artists, veterans, all people with fire within, ready to stand up for what’s right no matter how big the price will be. He favours the brave, but not the stupid, the honest and of a pure heart but not the naive. He doesn’t like despair, so he helps out those in need as long as they keep their hearts and spirits on the right path.
associated with: every fight for a better cause, especially those against force greater than the warrior; rebellion and revolution. He grants courage and strenght to the brave to stand their ground, swiftness and agility to parry stikes and wits to plan strategy how to overthrow the opponent. He’s a powerful deity, who will gladly walk the earth and have back of ones who win his favours.
sacred plants: morning glory, camelia, cherry
sacred stones/gems: jade, emerald, amber
sacred animals: lizards, foxes, wolves, dogs,
colours: green, black, silver, light yellow
food: tea, rice, mochi, umeshu, ramen, nihonshu
scents: grass, bamboo, sweat (work your ass out if you want him to pay attention), incense
accepted offerings: anything of great personal value gave up to achieve something more important, but he highly prefers non material gifts of sacrificing own comfort and a dedication to protect loved ones
ways to honor: leaving any offering at his temple or not giving up the fight, doing one’s best until it hurts. He’ll know, he’ll judge and decide if to get involved or not. Creating a garden or dōjō in his name is also a deed od great value to honour him.

[suzumesoul] Genji, of course, is the one that forgets he isn't wearing his helmet, shoving his forehead into Zenyatta's with all the affection of a particularly aggressive cat- then reels back in agony. "Fuck! Ow!" He's laughing, in that please-help-it-hurts-so-bad kind of way, eyes watering with the intensity of the dizzying pain ringing in his skull. It's going to bruise, for sure.
In all honesty, he doesn’t immediately realize what’s wrong, the action being so familiar to him–but it doesn’t take him long to remember how squishy humans can be.
“Genji!” he exclaims, hands hovering in the general area of their face, not certain whether he should touch them or not. “Are you alright?”

New lines for Overwatch have come out and I am having a stroke trying to untangle this.
Communication Wheel lines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYYiYWEKwhw&t=1763s
Genji’s new dialogue: https://twitter.com/Bible_Salesman/status/1250447883167391744?s=20
I’m a little baffled at some of these developments, especially the lines with Genji.
In the Communciation wheel for “You are welcome,” we can hear him say 「いいですよ。」(Ii desu yo) which sort means “It’s fine” or “Don’t worry about it.” Normally that’s fine. Grammatically and culturally, there’s no issue, but what gets me here is that this is Genji talking. Genji, by and large, is a pretty informal person. When he speaks in Japanese, he’s fairly casual.
The ‘desu yo’ part bothers me because that’s a manner of speaking that Genji doesn’t use ever. ‘Desu’ has sort of a neutral connotation of respect where it’s not overly formal but not casual either. Lots of students are taught to speak Japanese using the ‘desu’ form as a default because it’s polite enough without offending people superior than you or lower than you (for the most part; don’t get me started on customer service).
Given Genji’s way of speaking, I don’t know if he’d actually say something like that unless he meant it to be sarcastic or he was saying it to someone he somewhat either respects or is slightly above him in hierarchy. So for that to actually be one of his lines when speaking to just anyone is...weird. I feel like there needs to be some sort of retcon here or something. It’d be more fitting if he said something like 「気にするな」 or 「いいんだ」 or, though it’s a little outdated, 「気にせず」. All of these might’ve fit his character better. I wonder why they picked such a interesting phrase.
Then there’s the dialogue between himself and McCree.
McCree: How’d a guy like you get a nickname like “Sparrow” anyways?
Genji: My father, Sojiro, called me that as an insult. I’ve grown to like it.
I found the actual Japanese version to see if there’s much of a difference in how it’s delivered, but...
マクリー 「スパローってスズメだろ?お前さんなんでそう呼ばれてんだ?」
McCree: “Sparrow” means “sparrow”, right? How’d you end up with a name like that?
ゲンジ 「父上がつけた俺のあだ名だ。当時は馬鹿にされていただけだが、今は気に入ってる」
Genji: It’s a nickname my father gave me. At the time, it was meant to make fun of (ridicule) me, but I like it now.
I knew this from before that in the Japanese version, they don’t translate the ‘Sparrow’ name. It is literally ‘Sparrow’ instead of something like 雀 or something. Somehow it feels more like an allusion to something because the Japanese language is like that where they don’t really say what they mean and there’s layers to their words. The fact that it’s spoke in an English way despite how ‘traditional’ (or as traditional as 2076 Japan can be) the Shimada family is, Sojiro might be making fun of how Genji is pulling away from those ways.
A sparrow can fly away unlike a dragon (okay, look, Eastern Dragons are different from Western Dragons, I’ll get into this if someone really wants to know) who sits and stays holed up in their castle, possibly signifying that Genji is flighty and also that he is small and insignificant compared to a dragon. The added, purposeful use of an English word for a fucking word that exists in Japanese could also mean Sojiro effectively considers him an outsider.
This then bring into the question of what the fuck was the actual family dynamic here? I’m perfectly happy thinking that Hanzo misunderstood Sojiro giving Genji a nickname as affection that Hanzo isn’t granted, but fuck.
There’s a lot of complicated shit here to unpack and I’m just like, “BLIZZARD. GET SOMEONE TO DO CONSISTENCY CHECKS.”
Edit: Also, is it just me or does Genji speak more Japanese than Hanzo does? If he does, then I have another theory on that too. Genji’s losing his sense of self and home, so he tried to speak more Japanese because if you don’t use it, you lose it. I guess it’s also a way to prove that he hasn’t forgotten or that he isn’t losing that part of himself. And Hanzo doesn’t really have that issue and is kinda trying to fit in because he’s now in....not Japan. So he limits his speaking of Japanese.
#drivels drivels#more analysis and translations#i don't even care about Hanzo apologizing anymore#make him stay in seiza and put bricks on his lap i don't care#but what the fuck is happening with Genji#him saying 'tanzaku' had me cracking the fuck up#/stares at TWtaH#do i have to retcon my own writing#oh god#i don't even want to write my new chapter anymore i'm just trying to digest this

WHAT THE FUCK I JUST BLEW MY OWN MIND
So I was joking with a friend about how young!Genji looks like a fighting game character and I thought, hey, he kind of does though. He looks sort of vaguely like Kazuki Kazama from Samurai Spirits, also known as Samurai Shodown in the west.
Then I remembered that Kazuki has an older brother.
Holy shit. Young!Hanzo looks like big brother Sogetsu.
So then I stopped to refresh my memory on their story. They’re ninja brothers who rose to prominence in the Kazama clan until Sogetsu takes over as leader of the clan. At one point, they younger sister gets kidnapped and Kazuki goes rogue to try and save her- at which point, Sogetsu is commanded by the clan elders to kill him. spoilers he doesn’t but that’s beside the point
Then there’s the fact that Sogetsu’s weapon is called “Seiryu”, or the “Blue Dragon”, and Kazuki’s is called “Suzaku”, after the Vermillion Bird. The kanji for Suzaku? Includes “ 雀 “.
“Sparrow.”
wtf is this weird coincidence?? I know these are generally pretty typical ninja story beats but seeing them all together is pretty wild

Analysis/Breakdown of Shimada Lore
Alright so I am going to put all this below the cut, but here is what I see/interpret from the new lore snippets we have been given, plus the lore we already knew. All information will be taken from the Wikis and the screenshots are from the PTR.
I’m going to start by breaking this down into a few sections: what’s new, what does this mean, and what I think this could possibly imply. Afterwards I’m going to do a rundown of what Shimada lore we already know for sure, and is not just fanon, and then provide my own interpretation of what some of this info implies.
What’s New
So on 3/17/2017 the PTR updated with some lore snippets that can be found in the hero gallery. These show up when you first click on a hero, and also when you go through the skins. As of today, 3/18/2017, there are only a few bits of lore and I assume they will eventually update with more, especially once it goes live.
Here are the screenshots I took for the Shimadas. I’m including their base description and all the lore snippets that showed up when i swapped between skins.
So far Hanzo doesn’t have very much written for him (what a surprise) while Genji’s is much more detailed.
*Note that the Bedouin and Nomad descriptions are the same.
What Does This Mean
To start, Hanzo’s lore is really nothing new. Everything in his descriptions is basically what we have learned from his voice lines and also the “Dragons” short.
Here is what Genji’s has told us:
It is confirmed that Genji didn’t want to carry on the family business**
Their father’s name is “Sojiro” (in Japanese I read this to be often written as Soujiro since a u often follows an o when it is next to a consonant)
The nickname “Sparrow” came from his youth
“Sparrow” is diminutive
The Bedouin and Nomad skins are canon-based instead of fantasy (ex. Torbjorn’s pirate skins and Junkrat’s scarecrow ones)
Considering those skins are based on an ancient kind of Persian warrior and assassin that was closely related to Japanese ninjas, this leads to interesting assumptions about the state of the future world.
**We knew he was sort of a playboy and didn’t have much interest in family matters, but it was sort of up in the air as to whether he had his own plans for the family or whether he didn’t want anything to do with them.
Based on the information for Genji, I did some research (sources at the end) and found:
Sparrows are not native to Japan
In Japan, sparrows are often associated with bad luck
There are urban legends of a kind of yokai (sort of an evil demon/spirit) that is called the “night sparrow” that leads to all sorts of bad things depending on which prefecture the story comes from.
There is an old fairy tale called “ 舌切り雀 shita-kiri suzume” which translates literally to “Tongue-Cut Sparrow” in which things do not end well for the bird. (I’ll give a brief summary later on).
There are many different kanji variations of the name “Soujiro” but I think this one, 創士朗, is the most interesting/most likely. (Kanji breakdown below)
Name Breakdown
“Soujiro”, when written as 創士朗, holds many meanings. 創 means “genesis; wound; injury; hurt; start; originate”. 士 means “gentleman; samurai”. 朗 means “melodious; clear; bright; serene; cheerful”.
*Please note that the only site I could find for this is some kind of fortune-telling thing? I think? It may not be 100% accurate but this is just a fun fact sort of thing anyway it’s not really important to the actual lore story.
Also note that there are many ways this can be written, but considering this one holds the most similarities to the Shimadas and their lore, until we are told otherwise I believe this to be the most likely. (While I did take a year of Japanese in college and did as much research as I could, I am an imperfect being so if someone out there knows more about Japanese and especially kanji please talk to me about this because I want to know and I love it).
Tongue-Cut Sparrow
I’ll link to the wikipedia page for the story at the bottom, but I will give a brief summary here.
Basically there was this old couple, a wise and kind man and an angry, bitter woman. One day the man finds an injured sparrow and brings it home. While he is out working, the sparrow eats all of their starch and the woman becomes so angry that she cuts out the sparrow’s tongue and sends him away. The sparrow returns to his home and is found later by the old man who goes to look for him. For his kindness the sparrow offers him a choice between a large or small covered basket and the old man, believing it to be lighter, chooses the small one and finds it to be full of riches. His wife runs out to the sparrow to get the bigger basket and is warned to only open it when she gets home, but she opens it early and it’s filled with poisonous reptiles and she dies.
That’s pretty much it.
Also this story popped up A LOT when I tried to google the cultural and mythological meanings of sparrows in Japan so there is probably some influence of this on the storyline since the devs would be tripping over it everywhere they went.
Now, time for a list of things I think this could possibly mean. I was going to do a lot more but this whole thing has been really tiring so I may make an addendum post at a later date.
Possible Shimada Lore Things
Genji’s father might consider him to be “bad luck” or a bad omen of some sort.
This doesn’t seem very likely, however, since in Genji’s character description on the official Overwatch site states that he was coddled and protected by his father.
If Sojiro ever believed something negative about his son, it may have been closer to his death.
Genji and Hanzo may not have the same mother (their father is the only one referred to)
If Hanzo and Genji have different mothers, it is entirely possible that Hanzo was a legitimate son and Genji was born from a lover of some sort.
If this is the case, it is possible Hanzo’s mother would not like Genji and may act like the woman from “Tongue-Cut Sparrow”.
It is possible Genji’s mother is from Europe (sparrows are native to Europe and spread to Japan from travelers)
It is possible Genji is mixed race
Hanzo’s mother may be part of the reason Genji was ordered to be killed
Note: on the offical Overwatch site Hanzo’s character description states that “Upon the death of his father, the clan elders instructed Hanzo to straighten out his wayward younger brother so that he, too, might help rule the Shimada empire. When his brother refused, Hanzo was forced to kill him.”
While we know for sure the elders ordered him to do this, if there is some tension between Genji and Hanzo’s mother, this could mean there is a cinderella-type situation where as soon as his father dies, Hanzo’s mother convinces the elders it is time for Genji to be taken care of.
The nickname “sparrow” is called a “diminutive” nickname, which means “extremely or unusually small”. While this can mean it is possibly an insult, considering Sojiro “coddled and protected” Genji, this may be more of an affectionate term. While diminutive has negative connotations, the dictionary definition says that it can also mean something positive/affectionate (ex. calling someone a word that ends in -kins)
The nickname could be based on Genji’s height in his youth (his character model would not be a good indication of this. He may have been very small before he hit a growth spurt)
It could also be based on any birds that flew in the garden.
Because sparrows are small, the nickname may be diminutive for that reason, but sparrows could still have a positive connotation in the Shimada family.
Genji is called a “scion” which directly means “the descendant of a notable family” but it also means “a young shoot or twig of a plant, especially one cut for grafting or rooting” which, while mostly likely an unintentional point made by the devs, is interesting to think about how this relates to Genji in his youth.

[suzumesoul] "/Oh/?" Genji props his back up with both elbows, watching Zenyatta carefully. Curiousity buzzes in the back of their mind like a constant, electrical hum. Playfully, he replies, "You may be asking the wrong person, master. Looking back at my past escapades, I don't think I've ever had a 'romantic' encounter in my life." Genji rolls over onto their stomach, chin propped in their hands. "But in all seriousness, what exactly do you want to know? It is a fairly broad topic."
His reaction is masked by his lack of expression where another might quirk an eyebrow. The dampened curiosity in place of where someone else may reach to reassure. “Hm.” Genji’s past is what it is. Zenyatta has neither comfort nor discipline for them in that matter.
“I would be content with a fairly broad answer,” he says. The mere prioritization of certain subjects in that area was often informative in itself. “But, if you would like something more specific–I am always curious as to what people grew up being told is romantic, and what they, sometimes despite that, find to truly be so.”
