I love the heavy gold here with the black shadows...... Is it too early to do another pork shabu shabu restaurant sign? We’ve covered all thse characters so I'm assuming you know it says 黒豚島津 Kurobuta Shimazu!

Breaking it down, 黒豚 means Berkshire pig, and 島津 is a surname usually read Shimazu, sometimes Shimatsu or rarely Tsushima. (But the island in the PS4 game Ghosts of Tsushima is written 対馬.)

黒 means black. It’s read くろ (e.g. くろ.ずむ, くろ.い) or コク.

豚 means pork or pig. It's read ぶた or トン.

島 means island, and it’s read しま or トウ.

津 means haven, port, harbor, or ferry. It’s read つ or シン.

【ゆるキャラ】テキブー（三重県四日市市）

四日市とんてき協会のマスコットキャラ。 豚がモチーフであるのは言うまでもないが、このキャラは四日市の特産品の一つである蚊やり豚をモチーフに作られており、口が丸く大きい。

四日市とんてきとは、厚切りの豚肉に濃い目のソースを絡めてあり、ニンニクが乗って千切りキャベツが添えられたもの。 一般的に売られているようなとんてきとは味が違う。

麹のプロテアーゼは、豚肉のタンパク質を柔らかくし、リパーゼは脂の分解・吸収を助けるとされ、塩をそのまま使うより料理のうまみやコクがアップします。今朝は厚切り豚肩ロースを、塩麹＆白だしに1晩漬け、じっくりグリルして(ここで余分な脂が落ちます)、レモンを搾り、黒七味〰😋

Not a human name, but I just LOVE this shabu shabu restaurant sign! Classic spider font and punny name: 羅豚 reads Rabu, or ラブ or love. Awwww.

羅 has the original meaning of gauze/thin silk, or to spread out or arrange. It can be read うすもの or ラ. Its on-yomi comes up quite frequently as ateji, or (to put it simply) using kanji to transliterate loan words, the way katakana is used today. That gives it the meaning of Latin (羅甸, now ラテン[語]) or Rome.

豚 is new to this blog! It means pig or pork, and it's read ぶた or トン. It also happens that ブー is what the pig says in Japanese.

Aji no Roppaku (@roppaku689 ) has been humbly tucked away in Kagoshima City's Tenmonkan area since 1991 and is home to the very best tonkatsu pork cutlet that I've ever had in my life. Kagoshima is famous for its Kurobuta black pork, which is a mix of pigs that came from Amami and Okinawa 400 or so years ago and Berkshire pigs from England. The name "Roppaku" is a reference to the six white markings on their four limbs, snout and tail and the flavor of the free-range pork is sweet. This restaurant offers the option between the Roppaku pork and Chami-ton pork, which is a variety of pork that is fed mostly Kagoshima sweet potatoes and then fed tea 2 months before processing.
