Sorrow’s Station
Rei and Sasara stood beneath the roof of Osaka Station, surrounded by the bustling energy of commuters rushing to and fro. The sunset painted the station in a warm glow, casting long shadows and stirring memories that Rei had long buried.
"Why did you bring me here, Rei?" Sasara's voice broke through the noise of the station, curiosity tinged with a hint of concern.
Rei hesitated, his gaze drifting across the familiar surroundings. "Just felt like it," he replied nonchalantly, though his words lacked conviction.
Sasara squinted at Rei, as if trying to decipher a hidden message in his friend's distant demeanor. "This place... it must mean something to you, right? Why else would you drag me out here?"
A flicker of emotion crossed Rei's face, quickly masked by a practiced smile. "Nah, not really," he deflected, his tone dismissive. "Just a whim, like I said."
Sasara wasn't convinced. He knew Rei too well, or at least he thought he did. There was a guardedness about him today, a fragility in his facade that spoke volumes despite his attempts to conceal it.
"Come on, Rei," Sasara pressed gently, stepping closer. "This place... was it such a memorable place for you?"
Rei averted his eyes, pretending to scan the departure board overhead. "No," he replied flatly, a lie slipping effortlessly from his lips. "I don't have any memories of it."
Sasara's brows furrowed. "Aren't you mad?"
Rei chuckled hollowly, the sound devoid of genuine mirth. "Why would I be mad? It's just a station."
In his heart, Rei knew the truth. Osaka Station wasn't just any station to him. It was a place where he and his wife had shared fleeting moments of happiness amidst the chaos of their lives. They had stood here once, watching sunsets like the one unfolding before them now, their laughter mingling with the announcements echoing through the station.
But that was before everything changed. Before she was taken from him too soon, leaving Rei to navigate a world suddenly devoid of color and meaning. In the aftermath of her death, Rei had buried his pain deep within, donning the mask of a conman who deceived others and himself with equal skill.
As the sun dipped lower, casting Osaka in a fiery embrace, Rei felt a pang of longing he hadn't allowed himself to acknowledge in years. He missed her—her warmth, her laughter, her presence beside him. Yet, he had built walls around himself, walls of deception and feigned indifference, to shield himself from the unbearable weight of loss.
"Why did I bring you here?" Rei murmured to himself, more a question directed inward than to Sasara. "Maybe I just... hmm…needed to remember something."
Sasara watches him silently, sensing something is going on and the storm of emotions brewing beneath Rei's composed exterior. He understood now—the unspoken grief, the hidden longing. Sometimes, the places we pretend to forget are the ones where our memories are most alive, where our hearts ache with the weight of what we have lost.
As they stood there, the station buzzing around them, Sasara made a silent promise to himself. He would stand by Rei, even in the shadows of his grief. Because friendship, like the fleeting moments captured in a sunset, could offer solace in the midst of unspoken sorrow.
And Rei, lost in his thoughts and the memories that flooded his mind, found a flicker of comfort in the presence of a friend who dared to ask the questions he couldn't answer, who dared to see through the lies he told himself.
As darkness settled over Osaka, Rei's facade remained intact, but within him, a seed of acceptance had been planted—a fragile beginning to a journey back to himself, guided by the light of memories he had long tried to forget.
Taken from translated Fieldwork lines from Hypnosis Mic ARB game: Rei & Sasara @ Osaka Station Rei:...around here… no, I don’t think so. Sasara: What, Rei…this place, was it such a memorable place…?Rei: No? I don’t have any memories of it. Sasara: Aren’t you mad?
