#retroactRed #retroact #gaming #gamer #devilmaycry #videojuegos #juegos #capcom

So I recently completed yet another run of DMC3 on my way toward the platinum, and I’ve picked up on a particularly sad stinger that I’ve never noticed in the Vergil vs. Mundus scene in the secret/bonus post-credits.
Some background, for starters: Yûji Shimomura was the Movie/Cutscene Director for numerous movies and games including Devil May Cry 3, Devil May Cry 4, and Bayonetta (among others), and is famous for his action sequences and the subtleties he puts in them. Devil May Cry 3, in particular, has a heavy emphasis on body language and gestures to a really (almost) obsessive degree.
Moving on: Going back to that scene, there’s a particular nuance that’s totally missable, especially given how slight it is and the high from the wacky wahoo pizza adventure the player is probably coming down from (especially on a first time playthrough).
When Vergil comes to and Mundus appears, Vergil, predictably, behaves just as arrogantly as ever and boldly remarks “if my father could do it, I should be able to do it too!” It’s very easy to assume he got too cocky and threw himself right into a curb stomp fight. Case closed.
However, if you pay attention during his shit talking (slowed down and brightened up, below), what Vergil does shows this is, to some degree, false bravado:
Tumblr media
Vergil discards his sheath before he charges at Mundus. If you’ve paid attention to his fighting style at all, you’d know this is extremely out of character for him. Vergil’s clearly trained as an Eastern swordsman, and his entire fighting style is fast, precise, and elegant, with the Yamato being sheathed again immediately after use.
Weeb jokes aside, his style is based off of the real Iaidō (居合道) martial art - quick, smooth, controlled movements of drawing a blade from its scabbard/saya and striking or cutting an opponent, removing blood from the blade, and then replacing the sword in the scabbard. He even uses a traditional stance when he’s preparing to fight Dante again before Nero shows up. An example:

That said, Vergil getting rid of the Yamato’s sheath is both old Eastern swordsman code and a trope (called “throw the sheath away”) - you never, ever throw the sheath of your blade away unless you feel like it’s the last time you can.
In short, despite his attitude, Vergil knew this was a fight he was most likely never going win or come back from. This makes the awareness he has as Nelo Angelo even sadder, and in turn makes V’s absolute, unconcealed revulsion at the sight of the Angelos make even more sense (than it already does) because he is looking at the picture of failure.

[When attempting to explain the Temen-ni-gru incident]
Vergil: From my research, the tower was sealed some 2,000 years ago in a complex ritual requiring Sparda - your grandfather - to confiscate the names of demons who resemble fallen angels representing the seven deadly sins, imprison the tower's 7 gatekeepers, and seal away Leviathan, as well as his own demonic power. Also, it rotates.
Dante, casually trying to one up Vergil: The Leviathan - a giant flying whale beast by the way, absolutely enormous - swallowed me whole when I was running down the side of the tower chasing after Rebellion.
Vergil, trying ignore Dante but also wanting to one up him back: ...I raised the tower with the help of a man who masqueraded as a clown and opened a portal to hell in order to gain our father’s power and protect what mattered most to me. [Lady is glaring daggers at the back of Vergil’s skull while cleaning Kalina-Ann I & II]
Dante: Well, I killed the Leviathan after destroying its heart and cut its eye open to escape, and also met a lightning witch who turns into a guitar. :D
Nero: ...Sounds fake but okay.

Capcom has updated their official blog with release details for the Devil May Cry HD Collection.   The Devil May Cry HD Collection will include the original Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and the Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition.   Originally the Devil May Cry HD Collection was released for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on April 4, 2012 so it is nice to see that the game will be releasing for the modern consoles. The collection will be priced at $29.99 and will be released for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 13, 2018.  The game will be released both physical and digital releases.
For those who haven’t been following the series, the first Devil May Cry game was released in 2001 for the Playstation 2. Devil May Cry is a hack and slash game that features the titular hero, Dante.  Dante is a demon hunter who is fighting to avenge his brother and mother.  He later meets a woman named Trish who helps help him on his journey to take out the demon lord Mundus.
Capcom provided a short synopsis for all three games along with some screenshots.
Devil May Cry (2001)
This is the one that started it all, starring a mature and subdued Dante, which matched the mood and tempo of the game’s sense of isolation during the exploration sequences and tough-as-nails boss battles. It’s also the game that inspired my favorite TV game ad of all time:
Devil May Cry 2 (2003)
Taking place after the events of the first Devil May Cry, this sequel strives for a more cinematic look and feel to combat, changing things up in how the camera behaves, but also taking extreme care to make the animations more natural and fluid. Plus, you can unlock and play as Trish, featuring her own unique weapons and move set.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition (2006)
Focusing on the origins of our favorite demon hunter, this prequel features a much younger and more rambunctious Dante who cares very little about how much damage he’s doing to even his own shop as long as he can chew his pizza and kick some butt. And he runs out of pizza.
