----------------------------------- Coming of Age Day in Japan (Seijin Shiki)
Coming of Age Day, or "Seijin no Hi," is a Japanese celebration held every year on the second Monday of January. It honors young people who have reached the age of 20 and marks their transition into adulthood.
This milestone signifies new responsibilities, such as the right to drink alcohol and smoke, as well as an increased role in society. Many participants dress in formal traditional attire—women often wear furisode (a type of colorful kimono with long sleeves), and men may wear hakama or formal Western suits.
The day usually includes official ceremonies hosted by local governments, where new adults are congratulated and encouraged to contribute positively to society. It’s a moment of pride and reflection for both the participants and their families.
