Day 2 - Today’s drawing is Kuroha Yoitsuji and Nijisuke Murokawa from Narita’s manga クロハと虹介 (Kuroha and Nijisuke). It may be a bit obvious, but these two are the main characters.

Since I think this is one of the least popular “ongoing” works of Narita, and I really love it a lot, I’m going to advertise it for a bit. Originally it was a 3 chapter series + 1 omake chapter with the premise of a boy-meet-girl story. Without giving any spoilers, it is a story where an incredibly “lucky” girl meets and incredibly “unlucky” boy.

However, last year the series got a continuation - クロハと虹介 黒き魔女の嬉遊曲（ディヴェルティメント）aka Kuroha & Nijisuke: Black Witch’s Divertimento. It is ongoing and a new chapter is published every 2 weeks weeks on the Manga Pocket app. Unfortunately it is only in Japanese, and only the original 3 chapters+omake and the 1st chapter of the continuation has been translated. Ahh, the story recently had some really cool revelations so I’m a bit bummed out I can’t really talk to anyone about it. 

If you like Narita’s works, I highly recommend. It has a lot of his typical tropes - lots of characters, quirky and/or messed up personalities, yakuza (lol), superhuman/supernatural, and etc.

About the artwork: Inking hair is hard. And anatomy I guess... The concept was a lot cooler in my mind, but I felt like this was really cheesy as I was drawing it. I’m a bit sad I couldn’t fully capture the beauty of Kuroha or the buffness of Nijisuke. Oh well...

If the snake didn’t look so out of place it would be more clever.

Narita mentioned Baccano! for the first time in a while in this tweet from the 22nd:

He’s basically listing off various series he wants to work on – and I checked with @kaedesan721​ re: this bit – when [he] recover[s]. When. I’m pretty sure he’s not implying he isn’t working now (he’s publishing BLEACH chapters after all) - more something along the lines of, ‘I can’t wait to be able to work wholeheartedly/catch-up on all these series when I’m feeling better.’ From his replies to well-wishing fans, he definitely is hoping he’ll be able to resume his old writing pace eventually.

As far as I can tell, these are the titles he’s listed (in order):

BLEACH

Fate/strange fake

Baccano!

Durarara!! vs Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (second crossover novel)

Dead Mount Display (the manga he co-creates with Shinta Fujimoto) (I guess he only had so many chapters ready in advance rather than the whole thing after all)

Kuroha & Nijisuke (a mini manga series he’s collaborating on)

Otsuberu & the Laughing Wednesday 2 (it was originally an original oneshot novel but I guess he wants to write a sequel)

Last one is a secret, apparently. I wonder what this ‘secret work’ could be...

Y’know, this tweet may sound pretty familiar to those of you who remember this one from back in January 2017, as translated by Kaede. You can see him listing listing his plans for 2017: Fake 4; Bleach; the finale for Baccano! 1935; Fake 5; Drrr!!vsTonkotsu (he was discussing which one should be first with his editors); and if he had time, he also wanted to write more Vamp!, Otsuberu Vol 2, and a new Izaya work. 

It’s sad to see how similar the lists are. He did publish Fake 4 on April 8, but that was early in the year and I think that was his only Bunko release of 2017. DMDP released as planned in Young Gangan in Autumn, but that was only because he’d already written the manuscript in advance - or, I guess, the first seven or so chapters? If he needs to work on DMDP I assume they’re running out of prewritten material to publish... And we all know he’s started publishing installments for the BLEACH novel again. 

What I’m curious about the most now is actually what the editorial department decided to do about the publishing order... By putting Baccano! aside and focusing on just Fake 5 and Drrr!!xHTR. Fate/strange fake is really quite popular to the point where you’d assume it takes priority, but now that the HTR anime is airing it’s possible they might want Drrr!!xHTR out so that it can ride on the anime’s coattails. Hm. 

Narita’s health should definitely come first, but I do worry. It’s no wonder he wants to get back to work, after all - this is his livelihood, and missing out on so many potential new releases for 2017 (and the accompanying sales) is no joke. He seems to be taking recovery seriously, what with the slower writing pace, I just hope he can accomplish what he wants to do this year without overtaxing himself.

"Young Gangan" Manga Magazine Launches New Series From "Sankarea" And "Durarara!!" Authors - Plus "Goblin Slayer" Series

Square Enix's twice-monthly manga magazine Young Gangan is in the process of launching a string of new series. Sankarea's Mitsuru Hattori is back with Kirei ni Shitemoraemasuka. (Will You Clean This For Me?), the bittersweet story of a girl running a laundry. Violent fantasy series Goblin Slayer is getting a Side-Story:Year One starting with September 15th's issue 19.  And, author Ryohgo Narita (Durarara!!) is writing October 20th's Dead Mount Death Play, with art by Shinta Fujimoto (Baccano's manga adaptation).
