Why Am I Watching This?

There are a few reasons. The first being; this is one of the most remade stories in dramaland. There is more than one Japanese version, a Thai one, a Korean one, a Taiwanese one, etc... As such, this is one of those things I feel, as a drama fan, one has to give a shot at. 

The second reason is that I actually quite like the anime. It was one of those surprising “wait, I kind of like this??” situations for me.

And finally... It’s off Netflix in September, so it’s now or never (not really, but it’s a push).

Is this the first time I’m trying to watch this?

Lol, no. I started this at 2017 but somehow didn’t continue. Also, I kind of actually hate the general plot of Smart Boy and Dumb Girl and the Smart Boy is also a raging jerk because why not  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

So, every time I try one of the versions I kind of find myself pulling back. But I do want to finish this!

Thoughts on Episode One (Plot)

* Kotoko is a badass. Like, sure, Class F, dumb, silly, say whatever you want. But this is a girl who gathered her courage and bravely confessed to a guy, and then stood up to him when he was a major jerk to her and her friends. For me, that deserves respect, and it’s not something you should take for granted.

Also, her ability to look on the bright side is also something to commend. I don’t know if I could keep a smile in that fact of such a situation.

* Speaking off... I forgot how WILD this premise is. Like, seriously? A meteor destroyed their house? Seriously? It’s so freaking ridiculous but... I don’t hate it lol

* The moment I saw this I couldn’t unsee it... Guys, where is Waldo in this picture? Hint: It’s Irie’s dad

* Speaking of dads... LOVE the fact both men use “chan” for one another (Ai Chan and Iri Chan). It’s adorable and speaks of a level of comfort and familiarity that I am all here for. 

* So... Mom ships this, right? Like, before she even saw Kotoko? We’re all in agreement? Good.

* To be honest, I actually really like these dynamics. I am so used to the stuck up mom who just wants to tear the main couple apart bc she’s not good enough for him (and let’s face it; it’s always SHE who is not good enough for HIM). 

* Are we going to see a scene where mom accidentally locks the kids together in a room? Because I feel like we might see something like that lol 

* To Be even MORE honest, I ship it. And by It, I mean Kotoko and mom

* No thoughts on Irie except he’s pretty  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thoughts on the Cinematography 

It’s really interesting to see this (somewhat) older show. Yes, it’s from 2013 so not super old, but you can see quite a few differences already. The main being the color scheme; older dramas seem to have a duller and, let’s face it, realistic palette in comparison to today’s dramas who prefer, for this type of show, a more vibrant and colorful approach, in an almost fairy tale way (especially cdramas and kdramas)

I’m back again with another drama review!(^O^)/

The second season of Itazura na Kiss~Love in Tokyo picks up with the now married Naoki (Furukawa) and Kotoko (Honoka) in college.  Naoki is getting ready to become a doctor while Kotoko tries her hardest to become a nurse so she can work beside her husband. 

I reviewed the first season of Itazura na Kiss: Love in Tokyo right here. The same with my first review, I had a very hard time watching Kotoko sometimes.  I know Japan is a male dominated society, but watching stories like this push feminism in Japan back a few steps.  I know, I know—it’s a cute romantic-comedy with the clumsy girl and the cool guy.  I shouldn’t be thinking too much into it.  BUT come on, Kotoko! Do you really not have any independence whatsoever?? Is Naoki all you think about 24/7?? Also, why do you call your husband by your last name when you, too, have the same last name?

(^^”I just love him so much!” Okay, calm down, Kotoko!)

Also, I think they made Kotoko dumber this season.  Every episode was Kotoko making mistakes and Naoki showing up, acting all cold, but still looked cool in Kotoko’s eyes. Kotoko did have a couple of her own suitors even though her love for Naoki would never waver.  A fellow nursing student, Keita (Horii), fell in love with Kotoko and, honestly, I actually liked him better than Naoki in their short-lived love triangle.  

(^^Then, again, if Keita falls for Kotoko, I really don’t trust his sense of judgment of others)

I did like the fact that Kinnosuke (Yamada) got his own love interest in Chris (Nakai).  They were cute in the end even though he acted cold to her like Naoki did to Kotoko (and Yuki to Yoshimi).  Girls, if guys are jerks to you, why do you keep falling for them?? If it’s because they like you, that’s wrong.  They should show you they like you by actually caring for you and not doing the opposite. But I do like the character trope of cold guys being only warm to the girls they love (I know, such a cliché), so I’m not one to say anything (^^;;)

I know this review was mostly being harsh on Kotoko.  I’m all for character development, but it just didn’t happen for her or Naoki this season.  It’s a cute story and something you can put on when you just don’t want to think, but overall, I think there are better romantic-comedy J-dramas out there.  There was no need for a second season, so I definitely recommend season 1 over season 2.

Favorites: Favorite Character: Probably, Kin-chan and Keita.  Favorite Episode:  Probably the episodes with the budding love triangle amongst Kotoko, Naoki, and Keita (episodes 6 or 7) Favorite Scene: The last scene with Kotoko and Naoki walking with their daughter and Sky Tree is in the background was actually a nice ending.

Itazura na Kiss- Love in Tokyo

Ok, so let’s take a moment to talk about my favorite J-drama, イタズラな Kiss- Love in Tokyo.

This is the story of one dorktastic Kotoko Aihara.

She’s in love with the super genius at school, Naoki Irie.

He cruelly rejects her love letter in front of the entire school, but in a cruel twist of fate Kotoko and her father end up living with the Iries. Yeah, you know where this is going.

Look at these two dorks. Obviously they’re going to end up together, but not without loads of drama. Also the second season has one of my favorite tv openings EVER.

Legit I sit and watch this every time. It makes my heart happy.

Aside from feelings Kotoko’s pain because I too am married to an emotionless robotic genius, I’m just charmed by this show. Sure there’s a lot of silly stuff and outlandish characters, but it doesn’t even matter. Even the villains aren’t that villains. The biggest bad guy of them all is Kotoko’s lack of common sense. 

Definitely give a love note to a guy you’ve never talked to in front of the whole school. That plan is winning on many levels. 

In the end, this show is an ode to love. Familial love, friendly love, romantic love- we cover them all. Plus it seriously has some of the most romantic declarations of love ever. 

I can’t find a gif of what I want, so I guess I’ll have to make it myself one of these days.

Also, in some ways this show feels like a love letter to Tokyo itself. Not the bustling Tokyo you typically see portrayed, but the everyday places and people that make it so great. The seasons and places around where they live and go to school play huge parts in the story. Look at all this pretty.

So in short, watch this show if you want to feel good. It will make you happy and full of love.

Special shout-out to one of my favorite side characters.

Kikyo is biologically male, but they tend to present as a woman and clearly show a preference for men. They are never mocked or used as a joke, but they are instead treated with love and respect. Kikyo is basically the best friend ever.

Second drama finished in 2017! This is also the first J-drama I watched on Netflix (even though it wasn’t a Netflix original)(^^) Anyway, onto the review!

This is a pretty old story since it has been remade several times (this Love in Tokyo one isn’t even the most recent reboot). Basically, the story is as follows: Girl (Kotoko, Miki Honoka) likes boy (Naoki, Yuki Furukawa).  Boy is rude, cold, and super popular because he’s good looking and at the top of his class. Girl presents a letter to Boy to tell him she likes him.  Boy doesn’t even look at the letter and flat out rejects her.  Girl is humiliated.  Because of some unbelievable circumstances, Girl’s house is demolished by a shooting star.  Because of some more unbelievable circumstances, Girl’s father turns out to be Boy’s father’s best friend since childhood so Boy’s father lets Girl and Girl’s father stay at his house with his family.  Girl ends up living with Boy and eventually wins Boy’s heart within sixteen episodes (and I mean, it takes the whole season!).  

(^^I mean…you kiss her, ignore her, kiss her again but secretly, get engaged to another girl and, then, at the last minute, get together with her…I mean, make up your mind, Irie Naoki-kun!!)

This really is the typical J-drama rom-com along with cheesy antics, a love-triangle (even though you know who the girl will end up with), and numerous predicaments that come up to pull the boy and girl apart.  To be honest, it’s nothing special.  It’s cute to say the least.  It intrigued me because of a couple of…similarities that happened to me recently (not THAT similar). Also, since it seemed to be a story that has been rehashed over and over in Japan, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.  

The actors who played Kotoko and Naoki were cute together but they had zero chemistry.  Kotoko would become stalker-ish at times.  Like, she lives with Naoki but she still wants to work at the same part-time job as him and still wants to join the same tennis club as him…he shows zero interest in her and she still can’t get over him. She also can’t choose her own dream or profession without thinking of Naoki.  Kotoko—don’t make life decisions just because of a guy!! I just wished her character had a mind of her own, but her mind was just fixated on Naoki the whole time.

(^^”If he was a pilot, I would be his flight attendant! If he was a tennis player, I would coordinate his schedule!” Come on, Kotoko!)

Not only Kotoko would follow Naoki because she “loved” him, but Kin-chan, the boy who likes Kotoko, would follow her around because he “loved” her.  He would get a part-time job at her school’s cafeteria to be close to her and his other part-time job was at her father’s restaurant! Expressing your love in this drama was to the extreme and, if this was real life, some restraining orders would be handed out.  

But, alas, this is fiction, where everything works out nicely and everybody ends up with who they want to end up with (well, except Kin-chan).

“Itazura na Kiss ~Love in Tokyo~” was, to put simply, a cute romantic comedy. However, even though I love j-drama rom-coms, this one was just too cheesy for my taste.  It’s something to put on when you just don’t want to think. The season was also too long, being 16 episodes.  Everything could have been compacted into 10 episodes.  I might watch season 2 in the future just because it’s easy to access on Netflix and I want to see how the series ends.  Hopefully, it will be better than season 1 (maybe not, but I’ll still watch it).  

Favorites: Favorite Character: It’s really hard to choose because all characters were pretty annoying (especially Naoki’s mom).  Probably, Kin-chan cause even though he was stalker-ish, he had Kotoko’s best interest at heart. Favorite Episode: Probably the first episode! Favorite Scene: Hmm…probably the end of the year party for the seniors at the karaoke box where Kotoko and Naoki had their first kiss.

Drama Title Rating: Story: ✭✭½ Cute but cheesy Acting: ✭✭ Yuki Furukawa was good but Naoki wasn’t a great character since there wasn’t much of a range for him (just one expression throughout the whole drama). Kotoko’s father was good, too. Everyone else overacted way too much. Theme Song: ✭✭✭ Both opening and ending songs fit the drama well and the opening is very cute! Total: 7.5/15

Next Up: “Itazura na Kiss 2,” “Ouroboros,” or “Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai.”
