Final Fantasy III Perfect Guide Volume 1 - Locations Part 2: Tozus - Argus

This is part 2 of a series using the FF3 guidebook (along with Google Lens + Translate/DeepL) to find some info on the towns of Final Fantasy III that were exclusive to said book. This part covers from Tozus to Castle Argus, covering most (albeit not all, Tokkul didn't have anything that stood out to me) of the remaining towns on the Floating Continent.

Tozus

小人族の人々が気楽に暮らす村トーザス

古代語で“大変遠い所”という意味を 持つトーザスの村。ここは普通の人間は 立ち入ることのできない、小人族の村で ある。主要産物は小人のパン。小人であ るがゆえ、地図が必須アイテムとなり、 作り出されるようになったようだ。また 小人が大きなモンスターと対等に戦える よう、魔法も大変発達している。

Tozas, a village where dwarf people live comfortably

The village of Tozas means "a very far place" in ancient language. This is a dwarf village that normal humans cannot enter. The main product is dwarf bread. Because they are dwarfs, maps have become an essential item and seem to have been created. Magic has also developed to the point where dwarfs can fight on an equal footing with large monsters.

Nothing too out there, but it's neat to see context for the magic bread and Tozus' magic.

Viking Cove

海の神ネプトをまつる、信心深いバイキングのアジト

誇り高き、海賊ビッケのアジト。弱者 をいじめるようなあこぎな商売はせず、 悪商人のふところしか狙わない正統派で ある。また、岬にネプト竜の神殿を築き、 うという者はいなくなってしまった 海の神ネプトを祭る、という信心深い一 面も持っている。が、海竜が暴れだし、 何隻もの船を破壊されて以来、海に出よ

The hideout of the proud pirate Bikke. He is an orthodox pirate who does not engage in the kind of business that bullies the weak, but only targets the hearts of bad merchants. He is also a pious man who has built a temple to Neptune, the god of the sea, on the cape. However, ever since the sea dragons began their rampage and destroyed many of his ships, he has not been able to go out to sea.

Now here's something neat: the Viking hideout was created by a pirate named Bikke. The name is naturally a reference to the pirate captain from the original Final Fantasy. This Bikke is more noble however, as well as a religious man. I'm not entirely sure if the second half of the texts is meant to refer to just Bikke or the pirates in general (i.e. that it's a translation error). If it is the former, then that could mean that the Viking captain is Bikke himself.

Village of the Ancients

超文明を築き上げた古代人の末裔の住む村

古代人の村の正しい名称は、古代語で 「正式な」という意味の「オドル」であ る。古代人は、歴史上では遙か数千年前 はる に絶滅したといわれている種族であり、 超文明を築き上げ、��思議な機械を操り 次々と自然の法則を打ち破っていった。 しかし、その栄光は長くは続かず、現在 ではその力を使いこなせる者はいない。

Village inhabited by descendants of ancient people who built a super-civilization

The correct name of the village of the Ancients is "Odol," which means "official" in the ancient language. The Ancients, a race that is said to have been extinct for thousands of years, built a supercivilization and broke the laws of nature one after another by manipulating strange machines. However, their glory was short-lived, and today there is no one who can master their power.

Apparently the Ancients were powerful enough to break the lows of nature. I guess this is largely due to their affinity for the air, if their airships and the Floating Continent (per the FC canon) are any indication.

Dwarven Hollows

氷のつのを守る気のいいドワーフたち

炎のクリスタルが祭ってある祭だんの 近くに、ドワーフたちの村がある。ドワ ーフの外見は、普通の人間に比べると身 長はやや低めだが、その見かけによらず しゅんぴん やばん た 俊敏で、戦闘には非常に長けてい かし、好戦的で野蛮というのでは決 ない。人間などに比べたら、ずっと 深く純情な種族なのである。

The good-natured dwarves who protect the ice horn

There is a village of Dwarves near the shrine where the Crystal of Fire is enshrined. The dwarves are slightly shorter in stature than ordinary humans, but despite their appearance, they are agile and skilled in combat, but they are not belligerent or savage. Compared to humans, they are a much deeper and more pure-hearted race.

Again, not much. Just some info on the dwarves.

Gyshal

誰も訪れることのない自然に囲まれた静かな村

へんきよう ギサールは、ほとんど人が訪れること のない、辺境の村である。その昔、ひつ じ飼いの一家が、豊かな土地を捜し求め てここにたどり着き、そのまま住みつい たのが、この村の興りだと言われている。 今でもひつじを飼ったり、野菜を作った りしながら、少数の人々がひっそりと暮 らしている。

A quiet village surrounded by nature that no one visits

Gyshal is a remote village that few people visit. It is said that the village was founded long ago by a family of sheepherders who arrived here in search of fertile land and settled there. Even today, a small number of people live quietly here, raising sheep and growing vegetables.

The history sounds as expected. Interesting how few visit despite the town's monopoly on magic keys, though.

Castle Argus

この大陸で史上最古の城ともいわれるアーガス城

ここアーガス城は、大陸史上最古の城 といわれるほど古く、それだけに由緒正 しき城としても知られている。もともと はアーガス王家の出城の1つだったが、本城の老朽化により遷都(都を移す) れた。外交、内政ともに優れた功績があ 特に内政に関しては、民政に力を注いて いるた���、民衆からの信頼がとても厚い。

Argus Castle is said to be the oldest castle in the history of the continent, and is therefore known as one of the most historic castles in the world. Originally, it was one of the castles of the Argus royal family, but due to the deterioration of the main castle, the capital was relocated to a new location. It is well known for its outstanding achievements in both foreign and domestic affairs.

Argus lore! I don't think we get much regarding Argus in-game, so it's neat to see here. Most interesting is the idea that the castle is the oldest in the continent and that it was designed as an outpost, which would explain why the exteriors of the castle tend to be more "fortress-like" compared to Sasune and Saronia.

アーガス家秘蔵の品は時の歯車

時の歯車はアーガス家に代々伝わっている秘 蔵の品だ。その昔は“永久機関”とも呼ばれて いたこの品は、古代の民が造ったものとされて いる。冒険好きで発明狂のシドが古代遺跡から 発掘してきたのだが、近年、彼の手によって飛 空艇の動力源として活用できるという事実が発 見された。だが、その原理自体に関しては、今 だ不明。当のシドも完全には理解していない。

The Argus family's treasured item is the Gear of Time

The Gear of Time is a treasured item that has been passed down through the generations of the Argus family. This item, once called a "perpetual motion machine," is said to have been made by ancient people. Cid, an adventurer and inventor-madman, excavated it from an ancient ruin, and in recent years, he has discovered that it can be used to power airships. However, the principle behind it is still unknown. Even Cid himself does not fully understand it.

So Cid was the one to find the Wheel of Time...

While the remake never says anything about this, it could still work due to the nature of Cid and the floating continent: If he were to give it to one of Argus' kings prior to Xande's move.

アーガス城は、大陸最古の城といわれている。 それだけに、多くの伝説がここには残っている。 ■えば、屋上の東側と西側にひとつずつある泉。 の泉は城を築いてまもなく、どこからともな 湧き出してきた、と伝えられている。しかも、 剛の泉には飲んだ者の傷をなおす霊力が、西 ●泉には死人を生き返らせる神力がある。ア 『ス城が栄えてきた理由もこんな所にある。

Argus Castle is said to be the oldest castle on the continent. For that reason, many legends remain here. For example, there are springs on the east and west sides of the roof. It is said that these springs began to flow out of nowhere soon after the castle was built. Furthermore, the Spring of Strength has the spiritual power to heal the wounds of those who drink from it, while the Spring of West has the divine power to bring the dead back to life. This is also why Argus Castle has flourished.

This is referring to the springs that can be reached from the upper balcony via the throne room. I believe NPC dialogue in the remake suggests that only those blessed by the crystals could use the springs, so it's interesting that this not only implies that anyone can use them but that they are very rare enough to be a major feature of Argus.

神秘の楽の研元有はどこに

ヒットポイント 神秘の薬、エリクサーは、使った者のHP・ ガッポイント MPを最大値まで回復することができる。秘薬 中の秘薬で、現在ではその製造方法を知る者も なく、幻の薬となっている。この城には、その 幻の東エリクサーを造りだす研究をしている者 がいるのだ。ただし、まだまだ研究は進んでお こたんらず、偶然にできてしまうことがごくたまにあ どるだけ。やはり貴重品だ。

Where is the mysterious elixir?

The mysterious elixir can restore the user's HP and MP to their maximum value. It is the most secret of secret medicines, and currently no one knows how to make it, making it a phantom medicine. There is someone in this castle who is researching how to create the phantom eastern elixir. However, the research is still in progress, and it only happens occasionally by chance. It is still a valuable item.

This is referring to the White Mage who gives you the Elixer and mentions that they were studying it.

小さなバイキング　ビッケ

小さなバイキング　ビッケを観賞。 2009年ドイツ作品、監督：ミヒャエル・ヘルビーク、出演：ヨナス・ハメルレ、ウォルデマル・コルス 1974年〜75年にテレビ放映されていた小さなバイキング　ビッケの実写版。

ヴァイキングの族長ハルバルの息子ビッケは力はないが機転が利く。ヴァイキングには腕力が必要だと考えてるハルバルは息子に物足りなさを感じているが、ビッケの母イルバは頭の良い息子を自慢に思っている。女友達チッチは頭の良いビッケに思いを寄せている。ビッケはヴァイキングと共に旅に出たいと思っているがまだ許されていない。ハルバル達ヴァイキングが略奪の旅から帰ってきてパーティを開いた翌朝、村が襲われチッチを含む村の子供たちが攫われる。幸いビッケは無事だったが、ハルバル達は子供たちを取り戻すため出航する。ビッケはひそかに船に乗り込み、その知恵を使って子供たちを救出しようとする。
