Leveraging Technology for Sustainable Development
Development is only true when it is sustainable. And when it comes to developing transmission infrastructure, the danger of environmental impact is more than ever. However, transmission development companies understand this grave situation and have now started addressing the energy delivery challenges with the usage of technology.
Leveraging aerial technology for handling some of the cumbersome tasks associated with construction of transmission projects is a way forward. Let’s have a look at some of the technologies that are providing to be a helping hand in the transmission industry.
Tower Infrastracture
· Usage of helicopters and helicranes: Construction of transmission towers in treacherous terrains can be a challenge. Due to remote regions and inaccessible roads, transporting tons of building materials (towers included) from one point to another gets extremely difficult. Using lightweight helicopters and helicranes for logistics purpose can not only make the task easier, but also save time. With this, we avert any harm to the soil construction as tons of construction materials are transferred via air route; hence, preserving the biodiversity of the region.
· Drones for safe stringing & line inspection: Companies are now frequently using drones for stringing conductor for transmission lines. This leads to reduced stringing time and enhanced safety in operations. Moreover, this allows us to limit the damage to the environment while maintaining workforce safety.
In addition to stringing, drones have emerged as a highly viable commercial tool in performing periodic surveys, combined with technologies such as LiDAR and photogrammetry. This had led to generate meaningful insights about sight conditions and reduce the time taken for surveys. Drones capture high resolution imagery of construction structures, helping perform inspections remotely in a safe and efficient manner.
3 Core Power Cable
Clearly usage of aerial technology like drones and helicranes in the construction of transmission infrastructure benefits the industry with reduced timelines and easy solutions to complex construction challenges. With this technology, the sector can work towards building evacuation infrastructure for RE sources in sync with RE power plants.

Ensuring Coexistence of Wildlife with Transmission
11 leopards die every year, 400 flamingos died in 10 days,178 elephants died between 2015-2018, and 31.5% (207) out of 656 tiger deaths between 2012-2018(as per the data of National Tiger Conservation Authority), these tremendously rising unnatural death count is due to electrocution. It’s common for these living creatures to lose their lives by stumbling upon the ill-maintained power lines and electrical infrastructure, bare conductors and sagging high tension electric cables passing through their forest abodes.
Power For All
Safety is critical when it comes to ensuring sustainable development. Let’s have a look at some of the recent ways on which transmission companies are ensuring power lines coexist with wildlife.
· Increased tower heights: Implementation of transmission towers with increased height allows safe passage to wildlife.
· Safeguarding Avifauna: Collision during flight is one of the prime reasons for deaths of birds. The practice of implementing bird deflectors, culverts, contrast or coloured markers prevent such incidents, safeguarding the avifauna active in that route.
· Provisioning artificial nests: Birds and other aerial lifeforms often find it transmission towers as convenient nesting platforms, which eventually results in their deaths due to electrocution. To prevent such occurrences, companies are coming up with various ways of provisioning artificial nests, safe nesting platforms and nesting boxes.
· Bird Guard: Bird guards are provided on transmission towers as per requirement to preventbirds from sitting in the insulator strings
Dark Fiber
The nation-wide implementation of measures and guidelines can protect wildlife from electrocution and tower related accidents. The reliable, basic need of electricity should be provided without compromising or damaging the wildlife and nature.

Using technology for sustainable development
In contrast to a traditional coal-fired power plant, the completion of a wind or solar power plant takes 12-18 months; however, the construction speed of the transmission lines has not yet improved. Regardless of how many renewable energy (RE) power plants we build, industry will not be able to power these clean power plants due to the lack of adequate evacuation infrastructure. Overcoming the time constraints in the broadcasting industry is vital. Using arial technology to handle some of the tedious tasks associated with transmission projects is a great way to go.
Today we are going to focus on one of these technological advances: the helicopter; and how it can be of great help to the broadcasting industry.
Power Innovation
Sustainable infrastructure development with helicranes:
First used as overhead traveling cranes in the 1950s, Bell 47 helicranes were the first to be used for this purpose. This technology proved to be a savior during the Vietnam Wars as its use for industrial purposes increased. In the wood industry for lifting large trees, its use in the transmission industry can be helpful.
· Building transmission towers in treacherous terrain can be a challenge. Due to remote regions and inaccessible roads, moving tons of building materials (including towers) from one point to another becomes extremely difficult. The logistical use of this technology can not only make the task easier, but also save time.
· The way to the location of the high-voltage line often leads through areas that are rich in biodiversity. The means of transport for moving the load have high potential for damaging the soil structure of the region. With overhead cranes, we avoid damage to the floor structure, as tons of building material are transported by air; therefore, maintaining the biodiversity of the region.
· In regions with unpredictable climatic conditions (especially deserts or mountains) the working window is shortened to a few months. This leads to an extension of the overall timetable for the transmission project. The use of this flight technique accelerates the construction process. The use of propellers in the construction of transmission infrastructures clearly benefits the industry with reduced schedules and simple solutions to complex design challenges.
Power Transmission
With this technology, the industry can work to build a renewable energy evacuation infrastructure in line with renewable energy power plants.

Accelerating Reduced Carbon Emission with Aluminium Conductors
The latest IPCC Report, released in August 2021, has issued code red for human-driven global heating. As per the report, if the global carbon emissions are not checked right now, a climate catastrophe in near future is unavoidable.
Moreover, the Ministry of Power in conjunction with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has indicated new pointers for the promotion of greener alternatives for transmission of energy. Admitting that lead-sheathed cables are environmental threat the Ministry and CEA are together promoting greener substitutes like aluminium.
Power Transmission
Aluminium Conductors – An opportunity for smoothelectricity
Tons of underground lead cables mean increased seepage of lead into the soil, leading to exposed water table. Addressing this direct threat to environmental damage, it’s time the industry replaces lead with better alternatives. One such alternative is aluminium – a strong yet very light metal.
Listed below are some of the advantages of replacing lead with aluminium:
• Lightness – Due to low density, aluminium outperforms copper and lead in relation to weight. Structures made from aluminium as 50% lighter than different metals. This is a massiveadvantage for the transmission sector, because itwill becomesmoothto move the cables. Moreover, lightness additionallyprovides to rightcoping within the course of operations, as a resultslicing down prices hugely. This provides to the financial sustainability of the worldwide economy.
• Lower Environment Impact–When compared to lead-sheathed cables, aluminium sheathed center 630 mm2 have decreasedeffectat the environment. When compared with lead-sheathed cables aluminium sheathed cables upload to decreased ozone layer depletion, lower in atmosphere toxicity and decreasedinternational warming potential.
• Better Conductivity – As compared to different metals like lead and copper, aluminium giveshigher conductivity to weight ratio; and consequently is taken into considerationextragreen.
• Recycling – Recycling aluminium can be very cost-effective.The amount of energy required to melt and recycle aluminium is only two-thirds of the energy required to extract the metal.
