here is where i discuss the elements of what has gone into harleen's backstory and aid in my portrayal of her. i will add more as needed.

harleen grew up in one of the worst parts of the gotham. her family was not only poor but incredibly abusive as well. her father, nicholas quinzel, was a raging alcoholic and aggressive narcissist. Her mother, sharon quinzel, was an enabler for her husband but also exhibited a deep fear of him. She confided everything in harleen, creating a codependent, emotionally incestuous dynamic between them. Watching her parents’ relationship gave harleen the foundation for what was to come.

alice quinzel, harleen’s twin sister, died when they were teenagers. She was murdered by an escaped arkham patient while he had an episode, but upon becoming stabilized and learning what he did to her sister, he takes his own life. It is this event that triggers harleen’s lifelong interest in psychology and how the human mind can fracture.

gymnastics were what granted harleen the opportunity for a better life. She spent most of her childhood down at the community rec center practicing before her coach found her and began to train her. harleen endured grueling training regimes, pushing herself to the absolute limit. In the end, it paid off, and soon, she was on her way to the olympics. but when gotham university offered her a full-ride scholarship, she took that instead, disappointing her entire family as well as her coach. she left home and never came back.

reading people is what harleen does best but when she met the joker, he was the only person that she couldn’t. she never realized that he was reading her. no one had ever bothered to before. In him, she found kinship, if only temporarily. She fell in love, and she fell hard.

it was anger that birthed harley quinn, not love or devotion. A quiet storm that had been brewing her entire life, the joker only gave her the tools with which to unleash herself.

harleen knows how to stay out of Arkham. As a psychiatrist, she knows what to do, and what to say to check off every box and appear sane and well.

harleen is a fairly private person and tends to live on her own and not let others, friends or otherwise know where she is staying.

in regard to endgame ivy/harley, this is an important aspect of how i portray her. harley & ivy were together for a while. things were smooth but never easy, and over time, they just couldn’t make it work. they still love each other but for harleen that love has changed shape multiple times and now, for the most part she tries to stay out of ivy’s way. gradually, harley began to feel as though there were certain parallels in her relationship to ivy as there had been with the joker. expectations. the need to conform. this caused her to panic and promptly end things, she wasn’t the kindest about it, and it's something that she regrets. but after everything she lost, how hard she fought to regain herself, to reclaim the mantle of harley quinn, she won’t let go of it for anyone. she can’t. she feels she is too broken to keep anything or anyone good in her life.
