🎈 = How do the mun and muse react to surprises? When is the last time either was surprised and what surprised them?
💛 = How would the mun and muse describe their best friends?
Tumblr media
@radiomurdeer whispered a line ;; mun vs muse ( accepting! ) i did answer the first one already, so the second one is being answered!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have a hard time defining best friends, because i love my friends so much anyway, but my wife han ( we arent married yet but one day ) definitely counts. she is incredible, so loving && patient with me. she puts up with my less than amazing days, helps me grow && learn, teaches me so much all the time. an absolute light in my life, the soul in my body, the very flame in my heart. she is so creative && talented, an amazing writer && artist both! you can find her at @huskker, @araakniss, && @vyrrus !! @staticintone definitely comes into the list too, i absolutely adore river, met her through han, && she has been an incredible friend, lovely person to game && roleplay with, && a huge support for me too. hugely talented writer, too, an amazing person to bounce ideas off of, && so sweet!
Tumblr media
❝ best friends? who do you think i am? ❞
Tumblr media
he doesn't want to answer, && that's complex because he has varied verses, but i'll answer for him in general terms based on my headcanons && majority of interactions! vox, of course, has varied levels of connection depending on the alastor we talk about, but so far there's a couple where, at one point, they absolutely would have been considered his best friend. he would describe alastor as fiercely protective, innovative && ambitious. creative, wise, && a guiding light. if we look at others that he's close to, in general terms he finds valentino to be very passionate && strong - willed, ambitious, too. velvette he considers to be very enigmatic && fierce, incredibly adaptive && willful.
Tumblr media
❝ ... i guess it isn't wrong. ❞
Tumblr media
you love them.
Tumblr media
❝ shut it. ❞

"Here lies..." || A John Price fan-fiction
Tumblr media
Author’s note: This is drama and my first fan-fic of Peepaw. As of now I'm not sure if I'm worth taking requests. Personally, John Price is the most comfortable character to write but I do want to write the others too.
Others being Konig, Simon, Johnny, and Kyle.
**PLEASE DO NOT translate, repost, or in any way reformat my work on this site and on any other social media
~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~~***~~
Title: Here lies...
Main characters: John Price x F!reader Contains: Drama, heartbreak, broken marriage Wordcount: 2.2k Song link: My Mind (slowed & reverb) - Yebba
~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~***~~~~~~***~~
Exposition:
John returned home with a new woman that his wife hardly knew about.
But she’s heard of her husband’s affair with another.
Her husband is a busy soldier, constantly absent due to his line of duty. He would only be home for 2 weeks at most–once almost nearing a month. To think the day had come that he would bring his new lover to their home. Did John even consider this as his home?
His poor wife doesn’t think that he does. Not when he had just returned only to be leaving with duffel bags in hand filled with the rest of his portable belongings that he packed minutes ago.
As she gazed at both her husband and his muse, innards boiled whereas her exterior was passive.
She blamed herself the most, the ruin of their marriage.
~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~
Who knows how a woman would react if she saw the personification of her heartbreak before her person.
‘How do you kill your lover without killing yourself?’ A woman thought to herself. She stood still, and so did her heart. What could possibly be going through her head to become so still?
It didn’t appear to be the “calm before the storm” kind. No. She was the unsettling aftermath of the disaster.
Jonathan Price stood in front of her–stood between two women. John wasn’t looking at her. Instead he firmly stared at the floor. He chose to be a coward than to look her in the eyes as he spoke blunt blades of poison.
She broke her stillness to cut him off, “Jonathan.” He paused, but still refused to look her way. The new woman behind him shifted her eyes between the couple, discomfiture transparent on her face.
The heartbroken woman continued to focus on the visitor’s face; a tinge of satisfaction sparked in her when she noticed the new woman’s shoulders caving in from unease. ‘At least this one is looking at me,’ she thought.
Her low, toneless voice spoke again, “End this.” Jonathan’s head dipped down and heaved a generous amount of air through his nose. It took him a few seconds, but she saw the white sheets of paper in his grasp. Her limbs moved on their own accord. She lightly took the sheets from his hands and walked to the study to get a pen. Jonathan followed her a couple paces behind, his steps heavy and slow. As if it were the ticking seconds of a clock counting the duration of the dying home.
She placed the documents neatly on the desk as she sat feeling her muscles lose their strength by the second. Hell, the words seemed alien-like. She couldn’t read the damn content of the sheets. Her eyes skipped to regard the blank lines that remained unsigned. From within, more fragments fell off that made her chest more hollow.
She felt herself perish further.
Why would she sign it first?
She didn’t want this marriage to end. She did her best to nourish it. Thoughts of her husband always filled her mind. She would never seek feelings from another, not when she had Jonathan as hers.
But Jonathan did not think of her the same way. He did not think of his wife’s awaiting arms back home. He didn’t think of the constant worry his wife would always endure while he was away.
He did not remember his loving wife.
There were no lies in their marriage and it was only now that she came to terms with those odious facts. Jonathan didn’t love her, not anymore.
And so it is.
Jonathan entered the study wrapped in solemnity. His face, however, stoic. Well, he was drenched to the bone with a captain’s ego, one of the traits she respected about him, and she still did up to this moment.
She placed a pen on top of the sheets. Jonathan understood immediately–a signal for him to make the first move. With three long strides he stood by the desk, pen in between his strong fingers. Her body stilled again when Jonathan’s hand raised but stopped midair. He readjusted the pen in his hold, his mind ran which caused him to falter.
“Dear–” he began, but his words got caught when he finally looked her way. He took in the sight of a broken woman. He couldn’t recognize his wife anymore. It’s like the color from her body faded into shades of gloomy greys. She would’ve looked serene in the yellow glow of the desk lamp weren’t it for the apparent wreck in her eyes and posture. Then her eyes laid on his. There it flickered: resentment. The tired look on her face crumpled as the corner of her lip raised.
“You should damn well treat her far better than you did me. Do you understand me, Jonathan?” Her silvery voice is tight. There it was, spoken anger. “She doesn’t deserve to feel this way–failure as a wife.
She placed her wedding ring on the desk with such care that it looked graceful to the speechless Jonathan, who had yet to sign the papers first. “In another life, I could have probably given you the family you deserved,” her voice cracked and her chest swelled with gradual pain at the sensitive topic.
“How I wish I could provide that for you right now, John. But, nothing. I’m sorry.”
She wanted to yell at the woman standing in the threshold of their home that she would not take him away from her. She refused to let another muse earn Jonathan’s attention; her role as his wife, as his equal. ‘You won’t take him away from me,’ she wanted to swear. ‘May these promises be written on stone, how much I want to remain by his side, by my John.’
Her mind went off alarmingly, ‘Damn her. I won’t leave him. Not John.’
Yet no such arguments came out from her.
How could she, when she blamed herself the most for her shortcoming as a wife.
A defect, unable to make John a father.
“I’m sorry we ended up like this. I’m sorry for hurting you so much when I vowed to put your happiness first.” Jonathan spoke thickly. He gulped, then surprisingly took a knee by the seat she sat on. “Our marriage may not have worked the way we promised it would, but I will take our memories together till the end of the line. I’ll always be grateful for your constant patience and effort. In another lifetime, we…” Jonathan’s words hung in the silence of the night as the endless possibilities ran in his head. Anything could have happened.
“If it makes you feel any better…curse, yell, scream, hurt me,” he said instead. “You can do whatever to lessen the pain–”
Her hand cupped his bearded jaw softly. With words full of conviction she said, “I won’t do that to you. Never you, John.” She smiled. She had the audacity to show him a smile.
The stoic mask of Jonathan Price fell apart the longer he looked at his wife. The longer he observed her the more he was convinced that a saint sat before him.
His left hand found itself atop hers to place it against his cheek. His rough digits massaging her smooth ones. “I don’t…” John whispered, his voice wavered with no trace of the soldier they knew him to be. He groaned, expressing his displeasure.
However, with a new-found purpose he stood and signed the papers quickly. He held up the pen for her to take, his face facing the other direction. Again with avoiding. She took the pen delicately. It took her a moment to follow-through but, at last, her signature appeared on the opposite side of John’s.
Her stare locked on the sheets that John collected hastily, his feet rooted to his spot. ‘Move. Move. Move.’ He chanted in his mind.
“John,” the meek voice of his ex-wife called to him. He peered down at her seated form. Maybe it was the glass paperweight on the desk, or the picture frame, but something shattered.
John bent down to capture her in his arms. Her body racked with pure heartbreak. Tears of blood could’ve been mistaken for the thick tears that cascaded down her cheeks. She cried so bitterly the back of his eyes boiled as he cradled her head on his collar.
Words tumbled out her mouth, “I hate you. You lied. Don’t leave me, John. John, please,” she begged, fisting his shirt. He pulled her tighter against him.
“I’ll always protect you, love. I’ll always put your safety first. Remember that. This, I swear. Don’t forget that.” He said to her with intensity as she kept calling him a liar.
“I have to go. Always take care of yourself. Put yourself first. I’m so sorry, dear.” And with one last kiss to her wet cheeks he unclasped her hands on his shirt and left the house, signed sheets crumpled in his fist.
He left her again, only this time it was painful. It was the last.
The woman waiting outside the door recoiled as the door slammed shut. John stood with his back to her and his head low with the doorknob forcefully in his grip. He didn’t wait for her as he began to walk towards the car. The woman felt the atmosphere shift when he walked past her. It was burning, and menacing.
He hurriedly threw his bags to the backseat before stepping into the passenger seat. The woman moved swiftly, getting on the driver’s seat and revving the engine to life. She’s taken by surprise when he suddenly pounded the side of his fist onto the door. John’s breathing was deeply filled with aggravation as he tried to forcefully control his temper.
“John?” She addressed the soldier without looking in his direction. “Step on it.” He seethed roughly as he glared out the window. With no further questions, she does as she’s told and stepped on the gas.
John Price was known for being stoic most times, flashing a close-lipped smile occasionally, but how that changed when a silent tear trailed down his cheek. He had just left the love of his life back home drowning in despair. She wasn’t his wife any more and that made the damage in him a thousand times worse.
================================================
An umbrella in hand, the sky wept sorrowfully as you.
Your mind flitted back to when Laswell appeared once again at the threshold of your home.
“I’m sorry we hid the truth from you.”
Who would’ve thought that the woman from before would be standing outside your home–your new home of almost a year–saying the most shattering news to you. You swallowed thickly. Mind still not fully comprehending the amount of information that Laswell had told you.
“It was never supposed to be this way. However, a previous enemy had threatened to hunt you down in exchange for John executing his wife,” Kate took in a breath. “For the life of me, I don’t know how he knew that John had a wife. Turns out we had a mole who found John’s file and broke into his office.” Kate pulled out a picture from the folder she brought, a picture of a foreigner and a soldier wearing the familiar U.S uniform. The words began to construct in your head and they got heavier the more you listened.
“He managed to threaten John a couple of times but we weren’t convinced, calling it a bluff. Roughly a year before John and you…he was threatened once again, but this time we couldn’t risk it. Which led him to decide that cutting ties with you would be the best diversion.” Kate’s voice became softer as she continued.
“We also had to convince you, so you wouldn't set foot at base. Rumors were spread about John having a different woman back at base so the mole wouldn’t discover your real location–”
“Where’s John?”
Kate’s eyes snapped to yours when you spoke up. She noticed the atmosphere around you had changed. “When will he be coming here? No – when can I see him? I’m sure the mission’s done because you’re here.” You held your hands together, begging Kate to see how much you want to see John again.
“I want to see my husband again. Please, Kate.”
You continuously begged, and with that Kate’s shoulders appeared to sag from the pressure. She did not know how to tell you the terrible news.
“You are a liar,” you said to John. “A horrible one.”
Chin quivered with another sharp intake of air. Nose is clogged, cheeks tear-stained, skin cold, eyes swollen and red rimmed. You kneel on the wet ground, sitting on the heels of your feet. You rearranged the flowers by your knees.
“You don’t like flowers, dear. Nothing to worry about this time though.” A choked laugh slipped through but vanished as another set of sharp breaths racked your lungs. John’s dog tags clinked against each other from the motion.
“How I miss you, my love, it hurts.” Your fingers dig into the soft soil, reflecting your vulnerable state. “Wait for me. This time I won’t let you leave me so easily.”
The handwritten letter that came with all of his belongings burned in the back of your mind. The last paragraph you could recite word-for-word.
‘This is the only way, love. How I wish it wasn’t. But for you, I’d do anything. Even if it means leaving you in exchange for your protection.’
‘HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY
CPT. JONATHAN PRICE
BRITISH SAS
1985
PRESENT YEAR’
And soon, a new gravestone settled right beside it, with your name, year of birth and death. The promise written in stone.
‘WIFE OF CPT. JONATHAN PRICE’
“All hell breaks loose.”
Author's Note: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Apologies this took so long to post! I'm back on this fic with a small change: Bucky's wife has a name finally. (Otherwise it would be boring to keep repeating "She" or "Bucky's wife" all the time, right? Right!)
Summary: Bucky's wife has arranged a day out in the city to attend meetings with local charities. Bucky isn't too keen on letting her go without a bodyguard but she has convinced him that she can take care of herself. Oh how wrong she was...
Word Count: 1952 words Chapter Warnings: Language, Violence, non-con (TRIGGERING CONTENT, PROCEED WITH CAUTION, DNI)
Tumblr media
Months of meticulous planning and preparation were finally paying off. Rumlow had somehow found out where Barnes’s wife would be. She would be having a business lunch with people representing various charities. Too bad she would never make it there. Rumlow’s men had strict orders to keep her alive. After all, he wanted to be the one who dealt with her, knowing that it would ruin James.
“Sir, we are all prepared to leave.” One of the men informed the mobster who smirked in response. “Bring her to me.” He simply ordered, taking a sip from his scotch. In a few hours, he would have his enemy down to his knees, begging like a dog…
As for Bucky’s wife, she had absolutely no idea what was about to happen to her. It was one of those rare times she didn’t choose to take a bodyguard with her, despite Bucky’s requests for her to do so. She was just about to leave the mansion when a disgruntled brown-haired mobster appeared at her door. “Doll…Please, at least take Steve with you.. That’ll give me some peace of mind while you’re out there doing business.” He attempted one more time only to be met with an amused look from her. “Sweetheart, I love you, but you know I can take care of myself… Besides, you taught me self-defense.  ” She reminded him, a soft laugh echoing from her lips as she kissed his cheek before moving towards the door. “I’ll be back before you know it. I promise.” She finally told him, not knowing that it would be a while until she made it home… She also didn’t know that things would change from now on…
Bucky knew she was right. She could take care of herself if need be. Nothing could prepare him for what was coming though.
As the day went by, he couldn’t really focus on anything. And Steve was able to pick up on his friend’s discomfort. “I know you’re worried, but you know her.. She’s going to be back soon, and she’ll be in one piece. Right?”
He couldn’t be more wrong though…. Soon, Bucky’s worries would turn out to be justified.
As his wife was heading to the restaurant where the representatives of the charity organization were awaiting, a gunshot echoed in the air, lodging itself between the driver’s eyes, sending the car spinning out, ultimately crashing into a water pole. The impact was so intense that it caused her to black out.
After what seemed like an eternity, she woke up in a dark room, slightly disoriented from the crash earlier. But eventually, her vision became clearer and she realized that she was tied down. “Shit… I’ve got to get out of here…” She mumbled to herself, fear and panic rising within her as the minutes ticked by. It was only then that she saw a dark shadow approaching with slow movements. “Glad to see you woke up princess…” He said, wetting his lips in that disgusting manner that made the uneasy feeling worse. Who was this man and what did he want with her? “…. Ah, yes. Where are my manners?” He taunted, revealing himself. “The name is Rumlow…”
At the sound of the name, a shiver wrecked Bucky’s wife. This was not good. Not good at all.
“What do you want with me?” She asked bravely, making the dark-haired mobster laugh in response. “Simply to meet the woman who stole my enemy’s heart. And I can see why he’s taken with you sweetheart…” Rumlow mused tracing a finger across her collarbone. Sweetheart.. God, the pet name sounded so wrong from his lips….
“Don’t you fuckin’ touch me!” The female spat, trying to get his hands off her. This act of defiance only served to enrage Rumlow who backhanded her without a warning. Deep down though, he liked women who appeared brave in the face of danger…
“Then don’t provoke me you little bitch…” He growled, ripping the dress shirt off of her, leaving her exposed in the cool air of the room. And that was the first time she actually began feeling scared, considering the hungry look he was sporting. Whatever he was planning… it was not good. Not good at all.
“Now, you and I will send a little message to your husband… It would be a shame for him to worry about your whereabouts..” He smirked again, causing her to whimper in fear. And that’s what spurred Rumlow on to carry out his plan. What the girl didn’t know was that there was a camera recording all the disgusting actions that took place.
It didn’t matter that Bucky’s wife kept pleading for him to stop touching her… He simply laughed, extinguishing cigars all over her body, just to make her scream in agony before he tilted her chin up, forcing her to look up at him through tearful eyes. “The real pain has begun baby girl… Are you ready for yours?” He taunted, lowering his pants. “Please… Please let me go…” She cried, seemingly having given up. After all he was physically stronger.
“Stop moving and I’ll make it fun for the both of us…” He sneered, cupping her cheek. This gesture made her nauseous but she stilled and allowed him to caress her cheek. Oh this was turning out easier than he thought… “See, princess? It’s not that hard to relax and enjoy it…I can’t wait to hear those sweet sounds I’m sure you’re gonna make..” That was the breaking point for Odette. She couldn’t bare feeling his disgusting hands all over her. So she did the one thing she could think of, biting down on his hand, causing Rumlow to jump back in surprise. “What the fuck?!” He yelped inspecting his palm that was bleeding. She had drawn blood, which both impressed him and enraged him.
While Rumlow was trying to stop the blood from the small wound, Odette found the opportunity to undo the knot that was binding her hands together, and then it was a fight or flight situation as she tried to make a run for the door, only to be pulled back by none other than Rumlow who was practically inhaling her scent, causing violent shivers to wreck her scarred body resulting her freezing completely in fear. Whatever fight she had left in her had completely vanished, and now she was at his mercy – or the lack of it. She just wanted this to end as quickly as possible.
“What’s the matter sweetheart? Cat got your tongue?? Rumlow smirked forcing a wet kiss across her breasts. For the first time, Odette’s voice was caught in a silent plea for help, wishing that Bucky would storm the place and shoot Rumlow dead. But to no avail…
Rumlow simply laughed mockingly, bending her over, towards where the camera was placed. After that, it felt like everything had faded to black… She missed how he enjoyed taking advantage of her, how he growled in pleasure while she suffered. All while that damn camera was recording everything. Hours later, Odette woke up, disoriented and sore, and scared out of her mind as her memory of the events that took place mere hours ago.  Oh god… She had to get out of here… @tuiccim @world-of-aus A huge thank you to both for helping out with ideas and feedback <3
Unbearably White
Kaveh x Reader, Words: 1,721
Author's Note: This fic was inspired by "Unbearably White" by Vampire Weekend which is one of my favorite songs ever. I like using songs for inspiration so there will likely be more of those as well <3 any suggestions for fics or feedback on this one are greatly appreciated! okay enjoy!!
Tumblr media
The pages of Kaveh’s notebook always seemed to consume him. Most days, his pen seemed to move on its own when he was drafting blueprints. But lately, Kaveh has struggled to find inspiration without you in his life.
Afternoon light illuminated the mess that befell Alhaitham's kitchen table as Kaveh worked. Papers were strewn all over the place, despite the architect seemingly only pouring over a single notebook. The soft sound of the door latch opening and closing again informed Kaveh that his quiet morning alone in the house had come to an end.
“Are you seriously in the same spot I left you? You’ve been staring at that same blank notebook page since this morning.” Alhaitham stated bluntly. Kaveh let out a deep sigh and slumped over, letting his head hit the table. The pen that was in his hand dropped to the floor. “What, has all your architectural genius run out now that you’ve lost your muse?” In that moment, if Kaveh could have sunken into the table and disappeared completely, he would have. Maybe life as Alhaitham’s kitchen table would be more inspired. It had been a little over a year since you left for Fontaine, and thus a little over a year since you and Kaveh broke up.
“What do you mean ‘just don’t go’? This is for my thesis, Kaveh. I’ve been working up to this my whole academic career! How could you even say something like that?” You storm out of the Akademiya’s front doors waving your hand dismissively at Kaveh.
“I thought your studies were going just fine here, I don’t see why you need to go to Fontaine and be a Driyosh.” Kaveh is hot on your trail though he stumbles down the building’s front steps in his pursuit.
“I have been studying Merusea Village for years now without ever going. My research proposal finally got approved by the review board on my third try. This is my chance, Kaveh! Besides, you’re so busy with work. Maybe it would be a good thing for me to get out of your hair for a while.” Kaveh reaches out and grabs your wrist, with a huff you turn around to face him. Your eyes betray how his words have hurt you, but Kaveh still can’t help but feel like you aren’t listening to him.
“Out of my hair?! I can’t believe you!” Kaveh scolds as he drops your wrist and crosses his arms, “Maybe you’re right, maybe you are what’s holding me back! And one day you’ll tell people that before you ran off to Fontaine you dated the richest and most famous architect in Teyvat!” Kaveh watches as tears begin to form in your eyes.
“Dated..? Past tense?” Your words pierced through Kaveh. His jaw goes slack as he realizes what he said. “Fine if that’s how you really feel, don’t let me hold you back from your dreams. I’m sure as hell not letting you hold me back from mine!”
Although he was hurting, Kaveh tried to bury himself in his work. Luckily he was to secure a new project within the last month. However, his proposal deadline for the building’s final design was approaching and he hadn’t been able to come up with anything. The page in the notebook in front of him seemed unbearably white, blinding even. He had found himself staring at blank pages a lot in the past month. Most pages in his notebook had only a few basic shapes sketched on them, but a couple had letters he’d drafted to you. He may have actually sent them if he knew to send them, but he figured even if he could you probably wouldn’t want to hear from him.
Kaveh flipped through his notebook until he reached the cover. He traced his finger over the embossed lettering of his initials. Beneath the letters laid a message reading ‘For my genius architect and all his genius ideas’. You were of course just teasing Kaveh when you gifted the notebook to him. But now the words particularly stung after your last conversation. It didn’t occur to Kaveh how deep in thought he was until the sound of his roommate’s voice pulled him out.
“Why don’t you go get some fresh air. Try to find some inspiration in nature. Clearly my kitchen isn’t getting you anywhere.” Alhaitham suggested plainly. Kaveh grumbled in begrudging agreement as he began to gather his things. On his way out, he grabbed Mehrak and his greatsword before letting the door close slowly behind him.
Despite it being a long walk, the one place that Kaveh thought might give him an ounce of inspiration was the palace of Alcazarzaray. As he approached the palace, he realized how long it had been since he visited his masterpiece. Walking the grounds filled him with a great sense of pride. He admired how the greenery had grown in this season and how everything surrounding the palace served to complement it. Kaveh greeted the staff members cheerily, and made his way over to the fountain to sit for a while. Though when he got close he noticed the familiar face of someone already sitting beside the structure. Their expression showed that they were deep in thought as they peered into the crystalline water.
You looked up from the water to meet Kaveh’s gaze. Your face flushed as you shot up and began walking quickly away in the opposite direction of Kaveh.
“Hey, wait! Please–” Kaveh ran to catch up to you, “ What are you doing here? I didn’t think you were coming back so soon! How long have you been back?” Kaveh planted himself firmly in your path, placing his arms outstretched in a dramatic fashion. “Please just talk to me…”
You chewed on your lip anxiously and stared at your feet as you spoke.
“I just came here to clear my head…” you mumbled, “You’re so busy I know you hardly ever come here, I haven’t run into you here so far.” You glanced up nervously at Kaveh before averting your eyes to study the palace.
“You- wait so you are back? Did something go wrong with your research?” Kaveh questioned with worry, “Are you okay?” Although Kaveh’s speech was frantic and his mind was racing, he felt as if time had slowed down since laying eyes on you. His heart was beating violently in his chest and he wanted nothing more than to run away. But thoughts of you hadn’t left his mind since your departure a year ago. And he would hate himself if he gave up this chance to speak to you one last time. You were back to biting your lip, and you took a long pause before you started speaking again.
“No, I’m not back. My research is fine, thanks.” You replied curtly.
“So why are you here?” Kaveh prodded.
“Look, this isn’t your property or anything!” You snapped.
“It’s not but I’m sure I could notify Dori of any trespassers and have them removed if I so pleased.” Kaveh had no intention of following through on this threat but, you didn’t know that.
“It’s just easy for me to write when I’m here, okay?” You barked annoyedly, “And I’ve been getting homesick I guess… ” The second part was a mumble, but Kaveh managed to hear it. “Some days I catch a boat to Bayda Harbor and hike up here to draft my thesis. When I’m in Merusea Village I can hardly write anything at all.” You finally turned your head to look at Kaveh and as you did so he quickly reached up to wipe tears from his eyes.
“May I hug you?” Kaveh asked quietly. You hesitated for a moment before nodding slowly. Before you knew it you were enveloped in the warm arms of your ex lover. He rested his head on yours and swayed back and forth slightly. “I’ve missed you.” Kaveh whispered into your ear as he held you.
You two remained in your embrace for sometime before Kaveh finally loosened his hold on you. When you stepped back from one another, there was a beat of silence before Kaveh spoke.
“I’m sorry about everything. I’ve had so much time to think and I should have never tried to hold you back from your research. I can’t imagine how lonely and scary it is to be a Driyosh and I should have been there for you. I want nothing more than to make it up to you.” Now it was your turn to tear up. You began nodding slowly as Kaveh spoke. “You mentioned you can’t write since leaving?”
“Yes,” you replied, “I come here because it reminds me of you. It helps me think.” A dusting of pink appeared on your cheeks as you spoke but you didn’t avert your eyes from Kaveh’s. A sheepish smile formed on his face hearing this.
“I can’t get any ideas out either. The closest I get is when I write in the notebook you gave me.” You smiled too at hearing this.
“I’m sorry I got so upset when you wanted me to stay. It was just so hard because I didn’t want to leave you either.” A sadness glimmered in your eyes when you spoke of the last argument you and Kaveh had.
“You are completely right, I should have been there for you. I was just so focused on the feeling that another person I loved was leaving me– and for Fontaine of all places...” You slapped a hand over your mouth in realization as tears began to well in your eyes.
“Oh archons Kaveh, your mother. I didn’t even think– it never even crossed my mind why my leaving for Fontaine might’ve been extra painful for you.” Kaveh began fidgeting with Mehrak in his hands. His cheeks were hot with embarrassment.
“Listen, I know you probably shouldn’t be seen in Sumeru City until you’ve completed your research. And I’m too busy to be able to go and meet you in Fontaine. But maybe we could meet in Bayda Harbor from time to time so we can share ideas with one another? And we could exchange letters in the meantime…” Kaveh trailed off as he realized he may have been a bit presumptuous. “If that’s something you’d like… I mean.”
You smiled warmly and practically lept into Kaveh’s arms. Kaveh struggled for a moment to hold both you and Mehrak before he put his briefcase down to hold you properly.
“I take that as a yes?” Kaveh lilted.
“Yes.”
🌿 Author portrait. Get to know the author behind the blog! repost, do not reblog.
Basics.
Tumblr media
Name/nickname: Jace. (Has been my net handle for forever.) The Grumpy Ass.
Age: 32! I am indeed made of all bones and walking canes now.
Pronouns: He/Him.
Years of writing: Since my mid-teens. It really started around the time I first got a computer at my grandma's old place. Was able to watch overseas shows then one thing led to another.
Reflection.
Why did you pick up writing?: For me if was to answer one simple thing. 'What if', and that itself could be tied to countless scenarios that wouldn't be shared in canon continuity. Initially it was what do the characters do off the screen, then it edged to getting more detailed, to what new journeys or shared moments could they have? It led to a hell of a fun snowball effect. Coming onto different platforms and seeing it was shared or that other folks were ahead of the curved served as some fun motivation. In all the good, bad and deadass kinds of wild. It led to another 'what if' to answer, and still is being answered to this day with the RP hobby.
Do you have any writing routines?: My methods for knocking out replies are to always actively read the post. (no duh Jace), BUT, this comes with the idea on how to blend and extend. How can I give the post offered to me its due diligence and reactions, but how can I equally build off that by ensuring there's enough content to be responsive to for my RP partner? I let my character perceive to find their voice in terms of response and actions during this process.
Afterwards once I got the framework in my head, I kick on some tunes I genuinely enjoy getting it all doled out with the metaphorical meat and potatoes.
That said when it comes to scrounging up not muse per say, but that certain line of writing that I'm satisfied with? I just hop back to old works (fan made and official) that really worked those writing wrinkles in my head. There's some content that vividly let my fingers flow to 'paint a picture', in either emotion or literal presence in scene setting.
What's your favorite part about writing?: For me it'd just be bringing feeling to a scene. To give a very easy ground for anyone, experienced or new in this kind of thing to just feel the said scene. Not as some realistic one for one, but as a means to let their imagination comfortably sit in the drivers seat and have these elements expand before it. Tied with that is being able to find neat/cool ways to highlight my own muse's emotions through writing, letting it so volatile in it's creativity and their said emotions in said scenario.
Three things you like about your writing.
One. I really enjoy how shameless my writing can be. Honestly speaking, my personal taste never really clashed well with 'refinement'. It's blunt and broad, it holds energy and isn't ashamed to really let that be. I feel like that essence of 'voice' within writing is an important fundamental for me enjoying it. In hand with this, it's also why I never could actively write like other authors, and trying to say write similar to how a series does would never great great results from me. I want to carry that particular voice that varies with my muses, and have it flourish with what they also bring to the table.
Two. One thing I've also become proud of is details. Coming from a point where text based dialogue writing was my main bread and butter, watching the change in how it actually expanded has been like night and day for me. In particular, being able to describe a scene in these warm, cold or chaotic ways, adding that touch of whimsical flare to my posts as well. It's primarily why I get my kick from always having some fantasy in my settings, old age, modern or futuristic all the same. I love when I can get to use all the extra detail as extensions.
Three. This isn't tied into the act of writing in itself. Now days however I have to say I really improved on the aspect of proper plotting. My main issue was that I used to make it sound either too much like a script, or I got so creativity locked that it actually sucked the fun out the process for me. Taking some new approaches to the RP hobby has actually ironed out this detail, and I've come to see the incredible amounts of fun that can be held with it too. I intend taking the utmost advantage as well.
A question for the next person.
Write a question for the next person to answer. Once you've answered it, leave a new question for someone else to answer.
When life throws you lemons, and gets you down, does writing become something that you're drawn to as to get you through it, or do you feel like it does the opposite?
For me it'd be the absolute opposite. My creativity first and foremost is tied to me having a good mood. Being in more negative headspaces generally makes me harder to approach, so normally I wouldn't frequent any social angles for a prolonged period while I get that ironed out. It becomes a case of contrasting gears that are heavily rusted.
This is why I often put emphasis on this being a hobby for me. To me, it's similar as to booting up a video game for example and giving it a good spin. A more downtrodden me is moreso being a slough and not really wanting to move, outside of just watching tv while being a bump on a log. Stuff like that needs genuine time for me or a key situation involving said scenario to really iron out those kinks.
It leaves a bad taste for my type of character let that touch of escaping get involved.
New question: What are your favorite details that you enjoy to highlight about your muse through writing? Is a physical element? A measure of character that holds the most flare? This can have multiple answers or a solitary one.
Tagged by: @araneitela Look at you dive bombing me with this. Thank you kindly homegirl.
Tagging: Any and all can proceed to take part! What's your writing lore, let the fine details fly out.
Today is my five year fandomversary!
Today five years ago I fell into this fandom and never looked back. I published my first Thunderbirds fic, which I will reblog again just for traditions sake.
1.3 million words/260+ fics later...let's just say I've had a lot of fun :D
Usually on this day I offer to write for some one word challenges and while I'll happily accept them, I honestly don't think my muse is up to playing with them at the moment. It's having a rest so hopefully at some point I can start writing again. But ask away if you like, I can always store them for later :D
Anyways, thank you to Thunderfam for all the fun I've had over the last five years and for motivating me to write those thousands and thousands of words...there will be more, I have no doubt :D
Nutty
::massive group hug::
Title: No-one is losing their Dad today Author: Gumnut Fandom: Thunderbirds Are Go 2015 Rating: Teen Summary: Exactly how not to do it. Word count: 5,145 Spoilers & warnings: Thunderbirds Are Go S1 Ep1 & 2, in fact if you haven’t seen these two episodes, this isn’t going to make much sense. Interwoven episode tag. Author's note: This fic is affected by two things. Firstly, it is the first complete fic I’ve written in nearly ten years, so my writing muscles are very much rusty. Secondly, brand new fandom! I’ve only been here for a matter of weeks and I’m so in love with the Tracy boys, it has become an addiction. It has been a long time since a fandom grabbed me like this, and I’m having sooo much fun! This fic is very intertwined with the first two episodes of the first season – that first scene (I love it!), but I felt it had some ramifications, because ouch! So this is possibly happening in the background of the episode. Also, total Virgil fan :D And anyone who knows me from other fandoms, knows what happens to my favourite characters :D Disclaimer: Mine? You’ve got to be kidding. Money? Don’t have any, don’t bother. Scenes parroted from the episodes are definitely not mine.
His hand missed.
The roaring wind caught the beleaguered hot air balloon, lifting it up, tossing it sideways, and ripping its tethers from the basket. The basket hung suspended a moment, then flipped, throwing its last passenger into freefall.
His yell was taken by the wind.
“Dad!” The boy beside him struggled and Virgil grabbed him, yanking him back to the safety of his ship’s overhead hatch. Calculations raced through his head. Possibilities.
He stabbed his commlink, yelling over the wind, “Thunderbird Five, I need you now!”
There would be only moments. Lowering the hatch, he threw himself at the controls. The kid was pleading for him to save his father.
“No-one is losing their Dad today!” No-one. John was in his ear. “John, what’s my time window?”
The answer was maybe enough.
He shouted over his shoulder at the kid. “Strap in!” And threw TB2 into a dive. He rode gravity until it wasn’t enough and kicked in the rear thrusters, sending them screaming past the falling man. Virgil brought her to pacing drop beneath him, the VTOL gear halting their descent, but not their fall.
The seconds counted down in his head.
Darting back into the centre of the cockpit, he secured his tether, and with an almighty shove, flung back the overhead hatch.
The ship’s plummet tore him from her confines and within a second he was falling beside the screaming man.
This time, his hand didn’t miss.
“I’ve got you!”
Another second ticked by.
He remotely triggered the VTOL, slowing her fall.
Damn, this was going to hurt.
He wrapped himself around the struggling man, protecting him as much as he possibly could, as the hatch rushed up to meet them.
Then there was Thunderbird, metal and pain. He grunted and the man fell off him. He vaguely heard the VTOL ratchet up into a hover. John was yelling in his ear.
He squeezed his eyes shut a moment, forcing away the stars, before rolling over onto his knees. Oh god, there was going to be hell to pay for this one. He could feel the bruises forming.
But now was not the time. He struggled to his feet, pleased to see the father and his kid clinging to each other. Totally worth those bruises.
A somewhat staggering step back to his seat, and he was answering John’s increasingly urgent calls. “This is Thunderbird Two, mission complete.”
There was a relieved sigh at the other end of the line. “Good job, Virgil.”
He signed off and took a moment to sigh himself, before plotting his course to the nearest hospital. The son seemed fine, but the father had taken that fall with him, and it wouldn’t hurt for both of them to get checked out.
He rolled his right shoulder…ow…probably wouldn’t hurt to get himself checked out either. At home. With a hot shower. And coffee. What was it with balloonists and the crack of dawn anyway?
-o-o-o-
It was afternoon before he made it home. He managed the shower but missed the coffee due to another trip down his chute to save some scientists from a seaquake.
He forgot his shoulder until he couldn’t target their underwater habitat with his grapple guns. Damn arm trembled when he put pressure on it, throwing off his aim.
Scott succeeded in latching on first try with the grapple gun in Thunderbird One, even though he knew the scout ship wouldn’t have the grunt to hold the habitat by itself. The thought of TB1 disappearing below the waves was enough motivation for Virgil to grit his teeth and make his body behave.
The day was saved yet again. This time it was three scientists he dropped off at the nearest hospital. And then home.
And then the Hood.
Seaquakes. An argument with the GDF. An argument with his brothers. There was coffee this time, but once again he was flying down his chute. As he hit the bars to swing himself into his ship, his shoulder screamed in protest and he stumbled as he landed, but there was no time. He shoved the overhead hatch closed.
This time there was an entire city to save. A solar collector had fallen out of alignment and in just the right position to fry downtown Taipei. Scott, of course, beat him there and was in the thick of things before Virgil could even assess the situation.
Grab the dish and move it. Once again, he found himself struggling, this time with the magnetic claw. He grasped the dish perfectly, but the moment he fired up the VTOL to lift the dish, his arm spasmed, jolting the yoke. He lifted up his hand and watched it tremble. What the hell?
He didn’t have time for this!
Unfortunately, the dish was still attached to its foundations and he was unable to move it. Then Scott was climbing to free it and Virgil’s priority had switched to rescuing the crew.
Slaving TB2 to autopilot, he dashed into the hold to grab his Jaws of Life exoskeleton. He only hesitated momentarily, steeling himself as the metal wrapped around him. He expected complaint from his arm, but none came. He blinked and flexed the claw. A little tingling, a twinge or two. Okay. And he was off and running.
Everything went perfectly well until he had to grab and hold onto the edge of the personnel carrier to save his own life.
-o-o-o-
Kuan-yu knew the laws of physics. He was an engineer, it was his business. The force required to crumple the door to the collector station was considerable, so there was no surprise when the man in blue and green and sporting metal arms was easily able to lift the beam that had fallen on Teller. The logo on his helmet flashed in the morning light.
International Rescue!
The IR man hurried the three of them out of the crumbling building. They stumbled over rubble, clambering as fast as they could, desperate to get away.
And then the sky was falling. The huge dish had come off its supports and was roaring, screaming, down towards them.
Kuan-yu opened his mouth to yell but was suddenly swept from his feet. His hands automatically wrapped around the harness that lowered over his head, and he was flying, the dish groaning down the mountain below him.
A blue man was riding the edge of it like a surfboard.
There was a muffled yell behind him. He twisted in his seat, but he could see little. Then a booted foot swung into view. There was another yell. And another. His rescuer must be hanging onto the edge of the carrier. Kuan-yu immediately began looking for a way to help him, but the harness was secured and he could not raise it.
His glance flickered down to the settling dish, looking for the other blue man, but he was gone. A moment later his world slipped into shadow and he looked up to see the massive green bulk of the world-famous Thunderbird Two.
There were expressions of awe, but Kuan-yu was overloaded and out of words.
The ship swallowed them up.
-o-o-o-
There was a moment of silence when the carrier came to a halt, suspended just above the deck of the ship. The lighting was dim after the brilliance of the morning sun, and although the engines of the craft were dominant, they lacked the chaos of the moments before. All he could hear was the panicked breathing of his two workmates.
A click and the harness holding him to the carrier disengaged. Hesitantly Kuan-yu pushed it over his head and slid out of the seat. His shoes touched the metal of the decking and the bass roar of the ship’s engines echoed up through the soles of his feet.
He took a few steps around the end of the carrier, his eyes seeking out the blue and green man, not entirely sure he had made it and not sure he wanted to see if he hadn’t.
The IR man was there. On his knees, head down, metal arms awkwardly splayed out to the side. A hologram of Thunderbird Two hovered above one arm. Suddenly his tense shoulders dropped and Kuan-yu could hear a muffled expletive and then something about surfing.
“Are you okay?” He couldn’t help himself.
The man’s head shot up and piercing brown eyes fixed on him. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?”
I’m not the one still on the floor. He thought but didn’t say. Teller and Jane had come around the other end of the carrier and both were staring at the IR man.
The man on the floor seemed to realise it anyway and blinked before clambering to his feet with a grunt and whirring of gears. He fiddled with the hologram on his wrist, the ghost of the rear thrusters flaring for a moment, the ship’s engines changed thrum and they all staggered slightly as it moved around them. Apparently finished with the hologram, he walked awkwardly over to the other side of the bay and backed himself up. There was a thunk, and the exoskeleton separated itself from him. The reinforcements unfastened from his boots and hips and lastly, he slid his arms from the claws. There was a hiss as his right arm came free, he wavered, and Kuan-yu was moving before the IR man pitched forward in an attempt to plant his face into the deck of his own ship.
It was awkward, but he caught him. There was a gasp of pain when his hand touched his right shoulder, so Kuan-yu struggled to lower the much larger man to the floor using mostly his left side. Fortunately, he was still wearing his helmet, so the soft clunk when he connected with the floor should have been less painful than without.
The eyes under that helmet slid closed.
“No! No, sir. You can not sleep! Stay awake!” He prodded the man gently and his eyelids flickered. Kuan-yu felt around the base of the helmet, looking for a release. The man needed air and Kuan-yu needed to assess him for injury. His fingertips fumbled across a latch and there was a soft hiss as the helmet came loose. He gently lifted the protection off the man’s head to reveal his pale face and mess of thick dark hair.
“Scott…” The word was faint.
“Jane, go and see who is flying this ship and see if you can get help.” He glanced up at his other workmate. “Teller, sit down before you fall down.”
The technician wobbled himself back onto the carrier.
With those two occupied, Kuan-yu turned his full attention to the almost unconscious man beside him. “Sir, can you hear me?”
His eyelids fluttered. He was obviously fighting to stay conscious.
“Can you hear me, sir?”
“Scott?” His eyelids fluttered again.
Kuan-yu felt gently around his scalp, checking for a head injury. It wasn’t long before he found one either. There was a considerable lump towards the back of the right side of the man’s head. Fortunately, there was no bleeding.
There was also the concern for the man’s arm. His uniform unzipped at the front, so Kuan-yu gently pulled it down just far enough to peel back his collar slightly. He drew in a sharp breath at the sight of black bruising. This wasn’t a new injury, it was at least twenty-four hours old. What the hell was this man doing saving lives in this condition?
Jane burst back into the compartment. “There is no-one flying this plane!”
“What?!” Both he and Teller spoke at once.
“There is no-one in the cockpit!”
Teller and Jane started talking over one another. He looked down at the IR man again. Was he really on his own? In his condition? How the hell was this plane still in the sky?
No, there had been another blue man. His heartrate picked up. No, no, this wasn’t the time to panic. He took a breath. “Both of you – shut up!”
There was a sudden silence. The engines thrummed through the ship. Teller and Jane stared at him.
Beneath his hand, the IR man moved. “I have to…” Those eyes were fully open once again and narrowing in on him.
“Sir, sit still. You collapsed and must remain calm.”
The eyes blinked at him. “Who are you?” There was authority in that suddenly deep voice.
“Lin Kuan-yu, Senior Engineer at the Taipei Solar Plant. You saved my life and the lives of my two colleagues, not fifteen minutes ago.”
“Oh.” The man inhaled, held the breath a moment, before releasing it between his teeth. “Okay. Sorry about that.” And despite Kuan-yu’s resistance, the man sat up fully. He wavered a moment and Kuan-yu prepared to catch him again, but he rolled to his feet, stumbling, but standing firm. His eyes darted across the three of them. “Are any of you in need of medical assistance?”
Jane and Teller both answered no. Kuan-yu suspected Teller did in any case and would be checking him over once he had the IR man seen to. Brown eyes looked at him in question. “No, I don’t, but you do.”
“Let me worry about that.”
“But who is flying this plane?” Jane’s voice had an edge of hysteria to it.
The man swallowed. “Let me worry about that too.” He stepped back a moment as if to steady himself. “I’m sorry…”
And with that he staggered somewhat through the still open door and latched it shut behind him.
Virgil clung to the wall. The world refused to stop spinning. What the hell? The pain in his head. His shoulder was screaming at him.
He wasn’t fit to fly.
He had three rescued persons on board. And he couldn’t fly. He stepped away from the wall and staggered to the pilot’s seat. He could barely stand up.
Sliding in he scanned the controls. Where were they going?
A sudden image of Scott riding the dish down the mountain…
He slammed the transmission console. “Scott!”
“Virgil!” There was concern in his brother’s voice. “What’s wrong?”
“You okay?” His console flickered in and out of focus for a moment.
“Fine. You?”
He swallowed. There was bile in his throat. “Not good.”
There was a silence on the other end of the line, before Scott’s controlled voice returned. “Can you fly?”
The world was spinning again.
Then it flickered as Scott’s hologram appeared on the dash. “Oh, god, Virgil.”
“I’m sorr..y.” And the whole world tipped sideways.
-o-o-o-
Scott reached out to catch the hologram of his brother as it slipped sideways and out of view. His fingers caught nothing.
“John!”
His younger brother’s hologram flickered on beside the empty shell of TB2’s cabin. “Thunderbird One?
“Virgil’s in trouble. He may have lost consciousness. Can you remote pilot Thunderbird Two?”
John’s eyes widened before darting to his controls. He frowned and muttered something under his breath. “One moment.”
Scott held his breath.
There was another muttered word, then John’s face relaxed. “Confirmed, Thunderbird One. Thunderbird Two is now under remote pilot.” John looked up at him. “But there are still three rescued persons aboard.”
“What is Virgil’s status?”
John could seem cold to some people, but Scott knew he was anything but. “Rapid pulse, low blood pressure…what the hell happened?”
“I don’t know. But we will find out. Where are the three engineers?”
“In the pod bay. They are mobile.” John frowned. “One is banging on the door to the cabin.”
“What is Gordon’s status?”
“Mission complete and heading home.”
“Advise him of our situation. Tell him to beach his ‘Bird as soon as possible. Bring Thunderbird Two to a hover. I’m going to board her.” John’s acknowledgement was brief.
Both Thunderbirds were out over the Philippine Sea, TB1 a little ahead of her sister. Scott accelerated up and flipped back over his position to settle above his brother’s green behemoth.
He’d already fried one jetpack today, but he’d learnt a long time ago to always pack a spare or three, so moments later he was landing beside TB2’s overhead hatch. “Thunderbird Five, please release the hatch.”
A gentle shove and he had the hatch open just enough to slide in. He slipped it closed behind him.
The cabin was eerily quiet despite the VTOL burning brightly outside. “Virgil?”
He found him half slumped off his chair, almost beneath the console. “Virgil!” Scott hit the seat controls, releasing it and moving it backwards slowly.
Virgil began to slip boneless to the floor. “I’ve got you.” He grabbed his brother under the arms and as gently as possible, halted his fall. A little manoeuvring had him on his back beside his pilot seat. “Virgil!”
“Sc-t?”
“What happened?”
“S-rry.”
“For what?”
Any answer Virgil might have given him was lost in a sudden banging on the cockpit door. “Hey, you need help. Let me help!”
Virgil’s eyes slipped closed and didn’t open again.
“Virgil!” He touched the man’s cheek. His skin was cold. “Virgil!” No response.
What the hell had happened?
Professionalism kicked in. The patient was breathing shallow but rapidly, heart rate up. “John, give me his vitals.” His brother’s hologram appeared beside him and rattled off numbers. Scott peeled back an eyelid, then the other one. He frowned, a possible concussion?
“Scott, he has all the symptoms of hypovolemic shock.”
“He’s bleeding?!” His hands skimmed over his brother’s uniform. He couldn’t see anything obvious. The zip of his uniform was pulled away slightly from his collar. Scott pulled it down quickly, revealing pale skin and dark chest hair.
And a massive spreading red and black bruise radiating out from the man’s right shoulder.
“Aww, hell.”
“Damn it, sir, you need help!” There was another thunk from the other side of the cockpit door.
Scott’s eyes darted momentarily between his brother and the door, calculating. “John, we’re going to Darwin. Alert the hospital. You plot and initialise, take One, I’ll take Two once I have Virgil secured. Tell Gordon to go home and grab Tracey One to meet us there.” A breath. “Mission status?”
“Seaquake generators have been nullified. The source of the transmissions has been located – in the middle of Northern Australia, approximately one hundred kilometres north west of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. Kayo is on her way.” His brother’s hologram blinked out.
Scott swore, torn.
No time.
Fingers briefly touching his brother’s cheek, he stood up and strode over to the cockpit door.
-o-o-o-
Kuan-yu nearly fell through the door as it was suddenly shoved open. A man in IR blue caught him.
This one was taller. “Where is he? He needs help.” Kuan-yu shoved past the man into the cockpit only to find his saviour on the floor out cold.
The other man eyed him as if to assess his intentions before darting through the cockpit door. He returned a second later with a collapsible hover stretcher and first aid kit. The IR man stabilised his colleague’s spine. “Help me get him onto the stretcher.”
The two men grunted as they lifted the bigger man. “A few less pancakes, Virg.” It was muttered under the man’s breath and Kuan-yu wasn’t sure he had actually heard it.
There was the snap of fittings and the hardware attached to the prone man started to come away. The IR man lifted off the bulky protuberance over the man’s left shoulder, undid the belt, the toolkit came off, and the green sash unbuckled, exposing more of the blue uniform beneath.
“Thunderbird Five, you have control. Commence flight plan.”
There was no acknowledgement, but suddenly the plane shuddered, the engine roar shifting from around them to the back of the vehicle once again. Kuan-yu staggered a step as the ship suddenly changed direction and accelerated. Much faster than it had before.
The IR man didn’t flinch, his hand on his compatriot, keeping him still. Once the flight had stabilised, he hurried him from the room.
Kuan-yu followed.
“Where are we going?”
“Darwin.”
“Australia?”
“Yes, we need the hospital there.” He slammed open another door to reveal what was obviously the medical bay. Depositing the stretcher on the examination table in the middle of the room, he secured it. Medical alarms filled the air.
“Damn it, Virgil.”
Checking the patient again, the IR man grabbed a laser cutter and started tearing off the man’s uniform. Kuan-yu quickly moved to the other side to help. He tugged at the man’s left glove, the tough material giving way as velcro released the padding. He found the fastener for the hologram display and pulled it away, depositing it quickly on a nearby shelf. The man’s fingers were a road map of calluses. He struggled to pull off the glove. How on Earth did the man put these on in the first place? There was a brief flash of light and the IR man flickered the laser cutter at the crucial point and the glove came apart, falling off in Kuan-yu’s hands.
The laser cutter had certainly done its job. Most of the patient’s torso was now exposed revealing the extent of the massive bruise down the man’s right arm and chest wall.
The IR man was muttering under his breath as he cut the last of the uniform off the patient’s left arm. Discarding the laser cutter, he grabbed an IV and set up a fluid transfusion. “He’s bleeding internally.”
“No kidding.” Kuan-yu couldn’t keep his eyes off that massive, swollen bruise.
A blanket was draped over the prone man and an oxygen mask placed over his face. Most of the alarms quietened. A hand brushed the patient’s forehead, fingers gently moving through his dark hair.
And Kuan-yu found himself pinned by a pair of startling blue eyes.
“What happened?” There wasn’t any accusation in the tone, but the man’s stance was one of a lion over its cub.
Kuan-yu held up his hands. “I don’t know! He saved us and collapsed. I tried to help him, but he refused.”
The man’s shoulders dropped a little and whispered, “Typical.”
“He does this regularly?”
The eyes snapped to him again. “What is the status of your colleagues? Are any of you in need of medical assistance?”
Again with the hands up. “No, we are fine. Teller has some bruising, but he’s okay. They’re both down with the carrier that hauled us in.”
The man released another breath. “Do you have any medical training?” His hand once again touched the patient’s head, fingers in his hair as he cupped his crown lightly.
“Basic first aid. I’m the designated first aider on site at the Solar Plant.” He took a breath and held out his hand. “I’m Kuan-yu.”
The tall man reached over and took his hand, clasping it only briefly. “Thank you.” Another glance at the patient. “Can you stay with him? We are on approach to Darwin.”
“Sure.”
Yet another glance at the prone man. “Thanks.” And he was out the door.
-o-o-o-
For Scott, the next half an hour was one of the worst in his life.
The moment he set foot back in the cockpit, John was in his ear agitated that he had lost contact with Kayo.
Kayo who was in the middle of the Australian desert on her own.
And he couldn’t do a damn thing.
“Colonel Casey and the GDF are with her.”
“And how useful have the GDF been in the past? They mean well, but ineffective, John, ineffective! Why the hell do you think International Rescue exists in the first place? Because they can’t do their damned jobs!”
TB2 trembled under his fingertips as he took control of the ‘Bird’s descent. “Tell Brains that he needs to finish her ‘Bird. This has gone on too long. She needs her own wings.”
“Scott-“
“Do we have clearance to land?”
John spouted off landing conditions. “Helipad’s to the north. Ambulance attending. They have the patient’s details. I have Thunderbird One.” A shadow passed briefly over the windows as Thunderbird One overtook them and disappeared off into the distance. Darwin appeared on the horizon, the brief spark of civilisation in the subtropical swamp, stark against the green and blue of the Timor Sea.
He came in hard.
The air screamed around him as Thunderbird Two shot into the hospital’s air space, her VTOL engines roaring as he applied braking thrust over the helipad. Her mass always fooled him. She was slower, but more powerful than TB1. Pure grunt force.
The ship lowered, her landing struts deployed, and they were down.
He secured the console and was out of the pilot’s seat before the VTOL jets had fully retracted. Through a couple of doors and once again he was listening to medical alarms.
“His blood pressure is still dropping.” The short Taiwanese man was hovering around his brother, obviously at a loss of what to do, but wanting to do something nonetheless.
Scott didn’t answer. He hurriedly detached the hover stretcher from the table and activated its jets. Making sure the IV was secure and his brother strapped in, he put the stretcher in motion towards the cockpit. On the periphery of his vision, Kuan-yu followed.
Moments later, he was breathing in the hot moist air of the Australian northern country as the cockpit hatch lowered them to the helipad. There were doctors, there were nurses, there were numbers being called back and forth. His brother was whisked away.
A dark-haired nurse was asking him questions.
He had responsibilities.
Turning back into the ship’s shadow, he almost tripped over Kuan-yu. Recovering quickly, he motioned the shorter man towards the nurse. “Get yourself checked out.”
He leapt back into his brother’s ‘Bird.
-o-o-o-
Three days.
Three goddamned awful days.
Kayo was safe. Scott picked her up in Thunderbird One himself. He was the closest. The remains of the Hood’s hideout were secured by the GDF for further investigation. The shouting match he had with Colonel Casey over that likely didn’t help his case, but she had been a friend of the family for a long time, she knew the reasons behind his anger. She would forgive him. He’d apologise later.
Three days.
Gordon flew in with Tracey One, Alan beside him.
John hovered. Literally. His hologram appearing in various places, not all fully authorised, as he monitored Virgil’s condition.
Three days.
With John’s help they worked out what had happened. John, after all, had been complicit in the cause of the injury. There had been words.
Delayed concussion and a chipped humerus. A chipped bone which could have been a minor injury if it had been attended promptly. But no, it had been ignored, and the bone chip had eventually nicked a blood vessel. The bleed had been a slow one, but it had the time it needed to do damage. There had been surgery. Now there were questions of whether his brother might lose the use of his arm, even the arm itself.
Three days.
Scott found the tether Virgil had used in the rescue of the two ballooners. A good twenty metres of reinforced nylon cord. Twenty metres. A fall of twenty metres could kill a man.
It nearly had.
He dropped his head to the bed. Why?
He knew why.
Damnit, Virgil!
His brother’s left arm was draped with tubing, feeding his starved body with the fluids and nutrients it so desperately needed. Scott stared at fingers. His brother had large hands, callused and worn with hard work, yet still nimble with an instrument or paintbrush. He reached out and brushed his own fingertips against the pale skin.
“Scott?” It was barely a whisper, but when he looked up a pair of blurry brown eyes peered back at him.
Scott felt his cheek muscles drag his mouth into an almost smile. “Hey, Virg.” Equally as quiet.
The brown eyes darted around a moment, a frown creasing between them. “What?”
“Hospital. Darwin. Thunderbird Two is safe and secure.” She was sitting right next to her sister under heavy guard at the local GDF airfield. He swallowed. “There was a situation.”
Virgil’s fingers brushed against his. Scott wrapped both hands around his brother’s single hand.
He knew why Virgil did it. He knew the reasoning, the lack of alternative. Those two ballooners would never know exactly how lucky they had been and what had been risked. His fingers tightened convulsively.
“Scott.” His brother’s eyes were clearing, his voice that bit stronger. “I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
-o-o-o-
Six weeks later and it was hard to tell if any of it had happened.
The bandages were off and Virgil had recovered most of the movement in his arm. There was still work to be done and he was still grounded, but the outcome was looking more positive by the day.
John had been dragged back to Earth and there had been some honest discussions, some yelling, of course, but mostly sane discussion. New strategies on how to snatch a free-falling victim out of the sky – it did happen often enough, so they really should be prepared, especially since Virgil had so kindly shown them all exactly how not to do it.
The reiteration on reporting all injuries on occurrence was getting a little repetitive however. Virgil, of course, claimed he didn’t know it had been that bad. And besides, exactly when had he had the time to do anything that day – he hadn’t even managed a decent meal in the entire twenty-four hours!
Scott had backed down at that. He knew he shared the guilt with his two brothers. Nobody had reported anything, but then he had them working a twenty-four hour stretch without a decent break.
Brain’s announcement that Kayo’s ‘Bird was finally finished was a welcome distraction. And Grandma’s threat of a homecooked meal had the effect she had no doubt planned as they all ran for cover.
Scott found Virgil in Thunderbird Two.
Swearing.
And surrounded by discarded food wrappers.
“I’m going to kill him.”
Scott raised his hands placatingly. “Now, Virgil, he said he was going to clean it up before he handed her back to you.”
Virgil raised his fist full of wrappers, knuckles white. “I’m going to kill him!”
Staring at his angry brother, Scott couldn’t help but smile. The white knuckled fist belonged to his right hand. It took a moment for the bigger man to connect the dots, his eyes dancing back and forth between Scott and his curled fist, but when he did, the anger bled away to be replaced by an ironic smile.
Scott wrapped his arm around his brother’s shoulders. “See, there is wisdom in Gordon…somewhere.”
That brought out a much-missed Virgil chuckle. Scott ruffled his hair, before darting out of the retaliation zone.
But he wasn’t fast enough and Virgil lunged to grab him.
His hand didn’t miss.
Been rotating fanfiction as a concept in my head since I reblogged cryptotheism's post the other day. And instead of starting my large perspective drawing due tonight I'll write down some misc. thoughts.
I love fanfiction. And I've been an avid fandom person since middle school. Before I really used Ao3 I was on Fanfic.net learning the citrus scale and woefully unprepared to filter my content. Those were days lmao.
And one thing the sticks in my mind most is that not all fanfiction is a transformative work. But it sure as hell does blur the line.
Y'see a transformative work is a term used when discussing fair use because the tl:dr of it is that it places a work in a new light enough to be considered it's own thing. Think of all the fairytale re-imaginings or reboots that are basically their own thing but with the same characters. (That ladder being harder to produce legitimately because of how our copyright works, but the same concept.)
Fanfiction isn't transformative, not inherently. Most fanfiction is just taking your blorbos and putting them in a scene you want them to be in. It's not creating a fundamentally new story. Most of the time it's just an addition the already existing work, a love (or hate) letter to the art itself.
However, there are times when fanfiction does create its own stories. And here's when the line blurs. Common tropes can be expanded upon enough to develop characters in a new light.
Timeline rewrite aus are where the obvious start is. "What if's" that take the characters on different paths. It's not it's own story technically, it's exploring a path the canon could've taken, but if done right can feel like it's own book.
(Alternate Universes is where the line blurs. Because now you're actively creating a world that is creating this new light where these characters are in. How expansive this new universe's building is dictates how much the line blurs.)
There are companion stories, where knowledge of the main canon enhances the understand but might not be necessary. Oc centered stuff falls here, as does pre-canon fics, and explorations of background stuff where the author saw a character with two lines and decided to build them an entire life.
There are the wildly different aus, where the new world is something incompatible with canon. The obligatory Human!aus fall here when the entire canon being referenced has little to no humans whatsoever. College!aus as well, human or not, because the main canon didn't and could not have room for that sorta coming of age story. Crossovers might be here too, for their ability to merge worlds and make lines that don't exist.
It's funny, because the most transformative fanwork is the one most often criticized within fandom. The au of an au, the reworking a character so theyre unrecognizable from the sources besides maybe a shared name. That is arguably most transformative because of how disconnected it feels from the original.
But truly, I think the main difference between fanfic and transformative work is the intent. When you set out to build a world that retelling of whatever thing in common use with the explicit intent to play with it's characters and themes but to be new, is when you're truly being transformative.
Take all the adaptions of Shakesphere's work. In high school I watched a production of A Midsommer's Night in Jersey. It was so fun. The key difference between adaptations of Shakesphere's work and fanfiction is the intent. It's a retelling, not an addition or a companion or a "what if."
And I think that's what makes it's so blurry. Because when you get deep in your muse and rewrite an existing world or write your own to put the blorbos in, you tread into the territory of that intent even though that's not necessarily where you've started from.
I think we've seen it slightly. It's gone from "Oh X is a ripoff of Y" to "Oh X is just a shameless fanfic of Y" Because if the two versions of X have a different conception being shamed, it's still called out through the act of being a homage/retelling/whatever of Y. And this is where citing your sources and being enthusiastic of your inspirations comes to an important play.
