closed starter for dylan westwick ! ( @dylan-westwick ) location ; jack's pumpkin farm !
Providence Peak had a tendency to go absolutely wild when it came to the holidays— it was an endlessly endearing thing, to him; regardless of the fact that he'd grown up there and had nearly forty years of experiencing the events under his belt - they had yet to lose their luster. It happened to be an added benefit that everyone ( at least where his friends were concerned ) seemed to find time to celebrate and he'd always been in support of that as someone who worked like a madman on a good day. He'd found himself leaning against a hay bale as he waited, with snacks in hand, for Dylan to find him; he wasn't sure how up for exploring a pumpkin patch she'd be but they could cross that bridge when they got to it. He sent her a quick text to let her know where exactly he'd ended up and returned to people watching-- smiling broadly when he caught sight of her. "Hey, stranger. How're you feelin'? Up for some walking?"

Disneyland Fantasmic Fire
Fantasmic! at Disneyland has been temporarily suspended following a fire incident that occurred during a performance in April 2023. The show will re-open on May 24, 2024. It's been closed to allow for repairs, refurbishments, and potential changes in the wake of the fire. Disney has provided updates detailing the circumstances around the fire, as well as insights into prospective modifications planned for Fantasmic! upon its return.
How to View Fantasmic at Disneyland
Fantasmic!, Disneyland's captivating nighttime spectacular, unfolds on the iconic Tom Sawyer's Island, overlooking the picturesque Rivers of America in Frontierland. During peak seasons like summer, holidays, and spring break, this 27-minute extravaganza typically offers two showings, one at 9 PM and another at 10:30 PM, delighting guests with nightly performances. However, during less crowded periods, such as January and February, the show may have a single evening presentation or, in rare instances, be limited to weekend performances only. To ensure you don't miss this enchanting experience, it's advisable to consult the Disney website's calendar for the entertainment schedule on your intended visit date. Alternatively, you can conveniently access this information within the park by inquiring with a friendly Cast Member or consulting the Disneyland app or park maps, which provide up-to-date showtimes and details.
Disneyland Fantasmic 2024 Showtimes
Fantasmic! showtimes varies throughout the year depending on the anticipated crowd levels and seasonal events. Just like how fireworks at Disneyland are not shown every night throughout the year, daily showtimes for Fantasmic! vary too depending on the season. While predicting the schedule isn't always an exact science, you can expect to see daily showtimes or the potential for two nightly shows of Fantasmic! during these periods of the year: - Spring break season (March through mid-April) - Summer (mid-June through mid-August) - Halloween Time (most likely October) - Holiday Season (November through December) When Fantasmic! is shown twice a night, the first showing of Fantasmic! will run at 9 pm, then the Disneyland Forever! fireworks will be presented, and then the second 10:30 pm show of Fantasmic! will perform. During less busy times of the year, Disneyland will drop the Fantasmic! showtime to once per night. When Fantasmic! is shown once per night, the showtime is usually at 9PM. You might even see Fantasmic show Disneyland regulated to weekends only, which is something similar to World of Color at Disneyland. To check the showtime for Fantasmic! during your trip, check the Disneyland daily calendar.
Disneyland Fantasmic Viewing Area
With the triumphant return of Fantasmic! at Disneyland, the viewing areas have been updated to accommodate guests. There are two primary options for securing seating to witness this spectacular nighttime show: open seating or the convenience of dining packages. The map above illustrates the layout of the viewing areas surrounding the Rivers of America, where the main stage for Fantasmic! is situated under, "THE SHOW". However, the show's elements extend along the entire river, with boats and projections visible throughout. Guests who opt for the dining packages are treated to the premier viewing experience, with a roped-off area directly across from the main stage, offering an unobstructed vantage point. This prime location guarantees not only the best sightlines but also the luxury of seated viewing, a coveted perk in itself. The seating arrangements for the various dining packages are as follows: - The Hungry Bear Fantasmic! Dining Package seating is located on the far left of the viewing area, where guests typically remain standing. - The River Belle Terrace Standard Dining Package is situated just off-center to the left in the viewing area, with guests seated on the ground. - The River Belle Terrace also offers a premium dining package, where guests are seated at 7:15 pm and remain in their seats through the first 9 pm showing of Fantasmic! - Beginning May 7, guests can once again reserve a spot at Blue Bayou Restaurant for a multi-course dining experience AND reserved seating for a viewing of Fantasmic! when it returns! This updated map and seating information provide a comprehensive guide to securing the best possible viewing experience for the highly anticipated return of Fantasmic! at the Disneyland Resort on May 24!
Disneyland Fantasmic Viewing Tips
Disneyland has confirmed that there will not be a virtual queue system utilized for the nighttime spectacular "Fantasmic!" when it returns on May 24. This means that guests have two primary options for securing a viewing spot: staking out a location along the Rivers of America or purchasing a reserved dining package. To avoid spending an excessive amount of time waiting for "Fantasmic!," a key recommendation is to attend the second showing of the evening. For this later performance, it is advisable to watch the fireworks from the Frontierland area and then join the crowd moving into the "Fantasmic!" viewing areas once the pyrotechnics conclude. For general viewing without a dining package, those willing to line up a bit early can aim for a spot close to the fence along the water's edge. If arriving later for the first show, lining up on the bridge over Pirates of the Caribbean offers a nice vantage point. The "Fantasmic!" dining packages occupy a substantial portion of the prime viewing areas, with the Blue Bayou section directly across from Tom Sawyer's Island offering the best sightlines. This coveted spot is within the River Belle Terrace reserved section on most nights. For guests opting to experience "Fantasmic!" without a dining package and targeting the second show, the following steps are recommended: - Watch the "Disneyland Forever" fireworks from the area along the waterfront between Frontierland and Pirates of the Caribbean, directly in front of the River Belle Terrace restaurant. - When the fireworks conclude, move into the general viewing area closest to the center, ensuring to ask a Cast Member where you are permitted to sit, as the dining package reserved area may not be clearly marked. - Remain in this area for the approximately one hour until the show begins. Members of your group can take turns grabbing snacks or treats using the Disneyland mobile ordering system while others hold the spot. - When selecting your viewing location, aim to avoid any obstructions of Tom Sawyer's Island, as an unobstructed view enhances the overall experience. While an obscured view can still provide an enjoyable way to end the day at the parks, the energy and atmosphere of the area are crucial components of the "Fantasmic!" experience.
Fantasmic Virtual Queue
Contrary to earlier expectations, Disneyland has confirmed that they will not be utilizing a virtual queue system for the returning Fantasmic! nighttime spectacular in 2024. Previously, it was anticipated that Disneyland would implement a virtual queue process similar to the one used for World of Color, allowing guests to secure reserved viewing sections through the Disneyland app without having to physically line up hours in advance. However, as of now, Disneyland has no plans to offer a Fantasmic! virtual queue option. Guests will need to secure their viewing spots through traditional standby lines or by purchasing a Fantasmic! Dining Package, which guarantees reserved seating. It's important to note that while a virtual queue is not currently planned, Disneyland may still introduce this option in the future. If they do decide to implement a Fantasmic! virtual queue, it is likely to follow a similar system to the one used for World of Color and the previous Fantasmic! reserved seating process with FastPass. In such a scenario, guests would have the opportunity to join a virtual queue from the Disneyland app after entering the park for the day, typically around noon. The virtual queue would assign guests to a colored viewing section, effectively saving their spot for the show without the need to physically line up hours in advance. It's worth mentioning that being assigned to a virtual queue section does not guarantee seating during the show, and guests may be required to stand in their designated area. The virtual queue process would operate independently from the Disneyland Genie+ service, ensuring that it does not impact any Lightning Lane selections made by guests. While a virtual queue option could provide convenience and flexibility for guests, as of now, Disneyland has not announced any plans to implement it for the returning Fantasmic! show in 2024. Guests will need to rely on traditional standby lines or secure a Fantasmic! Dining Package to guarantee their viewing experience.

Vampires exist! A spooky Halloween post
From the Berkeley Blog, by Wadim Strielkowski | OCTOBER 29, 2018
Is everyone looking forward to the forthcoming Halloween? The “All Hallows Evening” is at our doorstep and everyone is preparing for trick-or-treating, brushing off their scary costumes, renting horror movies, carving pumpkins and generally intending to have fun.
Halloween is the holiday that originated from the Celtic rituals in Ireland and the United Kingdom only to be brought by the migrants to the United States to become an event that can now only be compared to Christmas when it comes to its business potential, overall sales, as well as its economic significance. Last year, American consumers spent about $9.1 billion on Halloween festivities. A paper published in 2017 claimed that the share of more “consumer-focused” Halloween products gradually increased over the years in relation to the share of more “traditional” products. And the most popular Halloween activity is wearing a spooky costume.
Vampires and Halloween
One of the most popular Halloween costumes is to dress up as a vampire. For some reason, people just love Dracula and others of his kind. There are many films, comics and popular literature on and about vampires. And you would be probably surprised to find out that vampires can actually exist and their existence does not contradict modern science!
Well, there are plenty blood-sucking animals found in nature, and even humans need to drink the blood from their own spices sometimes to survive. So, why cannot vampires (the creatures from the myths and legends, as we tend to think of them) exist too? Most scientists use simple math to prove that the existence of vampires is not possible. Their line of argumentation is the following: assume that a vampire needs to feed only once a month (we ignore the mortality rate, since it is irrelevant here). When this process occurs, another vampire is created. If the countdown starts in 1600 AD or some other time around that (on the 1st of January 1600 the world’s population was 536 870 911), then by February 1600 there would be two vampires (one who turned a human into vampire to start with and another one who was a human but became a vampire after the encounter with a vampire). In March 1600 there would be four vampires in existence, and in April 1600 – eight vampires. Therefore, some scientists say, each month the number of vampires doubles and after n months there are 2^n vampires which gives us a geometric progression with ratio 2.
As most of you might know, the geometric progression is increases at a very quick pace and if you sit with a pencil and paper and calculate it for our vampires example, you will arrive to the conclusion that after 30 months there would be no humans left – everyone would be turned into a vampire and the humanity would be wiped out by June 1602. Even if human birth rate is included into our calculations, it remains a very small fraction deaths caused by the vampires and would have prolonged the extinction of human race by just one month. Therefore, some scientists conclude, vampires cannot exist, since their existence contradicts the existence of human beings. This logical proof is of a type known “as reductio ad absurdum”, that is, reduction to the absurd.
However, if one starts digging dipper, everything is not that straightforward. Some works of fiction, Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight series”, Charlaine Harris’s “Sookie Stockhouse (Southern Vampire) series”, “True Blood” (TV series) as well as Elizabeth Kostova’s “The Historian”, show the world where vampires peacefully co-exist with humans.
In Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight series” vampires can tolerate the sunlight, interact with humans (even fall in love with them) and drink animals’ blood to survive. Of course, they have to live in secrecy and pretend to be human beings. In “True Blood” TV series, however, a world is shown where vampires and humans live side-by-side and are aware of each other. Vampires can buy synthetic blood of different blood types that is sold in bottles and can be bought in every grocery store, bar or gas station. They cannot walk during daytime, so they usually come out at night. Humans also find use of vampires’ essence – vampires’ blood (called “V”) is a powerful hallucinogenic drug that is sought by humans and traded on the black market (sometimes humans capture vampires with the help of silver chains or harnesses and then kill them by draining their blood). Some humans even seek sex with vampires (vampires are stronger and faster than humans and can provide superb erotic experience). There is a possibility to turn a human being into a vampire, but it takes time and effort.
Let us assume that at the time of the events described in the first book of the series, “Dead Until Dark” (2001), the world’s vampire hypothetical population was around five million (the population of the state of Louisiana in 2001 we arbitrarily use in our calculations). The initial conditions of what I call “a Harris-Meyer-Kostova model” are the following: five million vampires, 6 159 million people, there are organized groups of vampire “drainers”.
Simple calculations yield that the human population will be growing until 2046 when it reaches its peak of 9.6 billion people, whereupon it will be declining until 2065 until it reaches its bottom at 6.12 billion people. This process will repeat itself continuously. The vampire population will be declining until 2023 when it reaches its minimum of 289 thousand vampires, whereupon it will be growing until 2055 until it reaches its peak at 397 million vampires. This process will also repeat itself continuously and we will end up with a cyclical system of human-vampire co-existence.
Under certain conditions, the Harris-Meyer-Kostova model seems plausible and allows for the existence of vampires in our world. Peaceful co-existence of two spices is a reality. However, this symbiosis is very fragile and whenever the growth rate of human population slows down, the blood thirst of vampires accelerates, or vampire drainers become too greedy, the whole system lies in ruins with just one population remaining.
There are more interesting implications to this study: consider for example the organized groups of vampire hunters (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) or superhero vampire hunters (“Blade”). The results seem even more interesting and all clues lead to the one simple fact – vampires might co-habituate with humans and modern science cannot refute their existence! Here, you can download a poster explaining my research on this topic and covering different models of vampires and humans co-existence: Poster Vampires exist
Karl Marx, a vampire hunter
You would be surprised to learn that the works of Karl Marx are full of mentioning of vampires (Marx used the vampire metaphor at least three times in Capital). For example, in one of the cases Marx describes British industry as “vampire-like” which “could but live by sucking blood, and children’s blood too”. Here is another quote:““Capital is dead labour which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labour, and lives the more, the more labour it sucks”. Marx’s colleague and long-time sponsor Frederick Engels also used the vampire metaphor in his works and public addresses. In one of his works entitled The Condition of the Working Class in England, Engels identifies and blames the “vampire property-holding class” as the source of “all the social troubles”.
Marx described vampires’ habits, their greediness and their lounging for blood in such a detail that in many cases it crossed the boundaries of the mere metaphor. Although many researchers perceive Marx’s vampires as metaphoric abstract bourgeois bloodsuckers feeding on working people, his knowledge of vampires is very peculiar. In one particular case, when describing Wallachian peasants performing forced labour for their boyars, Marx refers to one specific “boyar” who was “drunk with victory” and who might have been no one but Wallachian prince Vlad (called “The Impaler”) – or Count Dracula himself!
All this is very interesting because the best-known novel of vampiric genre, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, did not see the daylight until 1897, 14 years after Marx’s death. Surely, one can place the Marx’s metaphor in the wider context of nineteenth-century Gothic horror stories which were abundant these days, and of which Marx was a huge fan. On the other hand, one might assume that some of the vampire legends were true and Marx and his contemporaries were aware of that!
Till the last drop!
My research on vampires and humans co-existence (that has been going on for almost 10 years now) is thoroughly described in a popular science book Till the last drop! by “Emily Welkins (my pen name and pseudonym) that shows how vampires became a part of the popular culture. The book also analyzes all possible models of humans-vampires coexistence using mathematical calculations. For the shorter version of the whole story, you can read a paper entitled “How to Stop a Vampiric Infection? Using Mathematical Modeling to Fight Infectious Diseases” (available here). You can also find more on interesting scientific facts about vampires, werewolves, demons (and other spooky topics) in my blog called “Supernaturaleconomics“.
Have a spooky Halloween!!!

"Caramel corn! I've already got a little bit of it stuck in my teeth but I got extra– oh, shit, do you like caramel corn? I didn't think to ask. I've got other sweets but there's plenty on offer if you want a snack before we get to anything else," Erol said, smiling sheepishly. He wasn't the most scatterbrained person he'd ever come into contact with but he certainly had a tendency to space out or forget things when he was particularly excited about something and, as luck would have it, he was almost always very excited to be spending time with his friends. "And you're fine, by the way. I don't mind going slower so you can be comfortable. That's like, a basic kindness, I feel like." He continued, scrunching his nose at the thought that Dylan would have to feel bad about her mobility in the moment. "I'm just glad you felt up to coming – I try to take more time off around now before folks decide they want to start remodeling their houses in the middle of the holidays and I get busy. So I'm glad that's paying off."
@dylan-westwick
Dylan was getting to the point of pregnancy where she was pretty sure that everyone kept asking her if she was really all that close. And she knew that she sure did look close, but she still had close to two and a half months left technically. Thank goodness for overalls was all she could say as she felt like she was practically waddling to find Erol. She let out a small sigh of relief when she finally saw him and smiled at the treats. She was a bit out of breath, as she stood by him. "Hi, whatchya got there?" Dylan nodded to the treats before giving a small shrug. "I'm feelin' pregnant. Walkin' is good, gotta keep up on my exercise and everythin', fair warnin' my pace is pretty slow nowadays."

closed starter for atlas williams ! ( @atlaswilliams ) location ; haunted acres !
"I'm getting too old for this shit, man," Erol grumbled, already half laughing as he held a hand to his chest. He loved haunted houses but that love wasn't something that made him immune to being jump scared in any concrete way and by the time he'd gotten to the end he felt like he'd run an Olympic sprint. "Whose idea was that, again?" He joked, grinning at Atlas and knowing he'd been the mastermind behind the initial suggestion. "I haven't been through that one in a few years - my kid gets spooked so easily he can't get through it and I'm not gonna make him do it if he doesn't want to." He shook his head, amusement clear in his features. "You wanna get something to eat or did something else catch your eye?"

closed starter for kat de la rosa ! ( @katerinadelarosa ) location ; high rollers !
If he'd given himself any time to get caught up in his own thoughts he was near positive he'd start having flashbacks to high school in the same situation he'd found himself in currently: happily following Kat into a new adventure even if it was something as small as attending an event at the roller rink. "It's been a million years since we've had time to do something like this, huh?" Erol asked, glancing down at Kat with an easy smile. They'd been friends for decades and the fondness he had for her was borderline unmatched which, for someone who tended to be endlessly adoring with all of his friends, was certainly saying something. "I haven't been roller skating in forever so I'm only going in if you promise not to laugh too hard when I eat shit," He said, schooling his features into a more serious expression before he looked at Kat again. His severe expression lasted all of three seconds before he began smiling again. "Let's get into some trouble, Kit Kat."

closed starter for ingrid lozano ! ( @ingridlczano ) location ; jack's pumpkin farm !
"I think I'm running a really, really solid campaign for last place," Erol announced, squinting at the pumpkin in front of him with a frown. How was it possible that he could be so good with his hands and still be completely inept at pumpkin carving? He definitely didn't remember it being as complicated as it felt in that moment but maybe it was the judging of it all; he wasn't about to get into it mentally for the moment but he was content where he was, at the very least. "What d'you think?" He asked, tilting the pumpkin towards Ingrid with a sheepish grin. "I was going for Jack Skellington but I think he's getting a little deformed at this point. You'd think I'd be better at this since I work with my hands literally every day."

Erol snorted— unable to contain both his smile and the laugh that rolled through him almost immediately at the sound of Atlas' teasing. "It wasn't that bad! I've loved it since I was a kid but I think I might be an adrenaline junkie or something because it's scared the shit out of me since childhood and here I am," He explained, shaking his head with a grin. "My sister used to just push me through the thing and she's almost ten years younger so that was the most mortifying thing that could ever have happened to me as a teenager." It was more than a little amusing for him to remember considering Roshan had been the epitome of a lanky, knobby-kneed kid and he'd always been much larger so the image of her literally shoving him through the attraction had probably earned its fair share of laughs. "I guess we'll find out in a few years, huh?" He asked with a low laugh. If Atlas' girls were anything like their dad he was certain they wouldn't have any trouble with anything life threw their way at any point. "I carved a very sad little showing earlier but the good ones seemed like they'd be pretty impressive once they were done," Erol mused. "What're you in the mood for? Food wise, I mean."
@atlaswilliams
"Come on. Don't be like that. It wasn't even that bad," he teased, a firm hand falling against Erol's shoulder to offer an encouraging squeeze. Atlas hadn't been far behind him towards the end, but he quite enjoyed the racing of his pounding heart against his chest. "Yours, I think? Or probably mine." He tried to imagine Alex or even Maggie going through, but oddly enough, he believed both children would make it through almost entirely unfazed by the scary events within. "I think Mags and Alex would be fine. Neither of them really know much fear." Alex would know that they were all actors, while Maggie would be far too oblivious to care. "Sure, food first, then we should check out the pumpkins. Heard the contest was out of this world this year."

Erol laughed. He couldn’t quite imagine Emre with a babysitter at his age but there wasn’t anything inherently wrong with it as far as he was concerned; Em would probably complain about it for months if he took Dylan up on it but he could offer the same fairly easily if he wanted to. Emre was desperate to make his own money every time Erol turned around and he imagined the kid would jump at the chance to babysit for Dylan when the twins were a bit older but he tabled that mentally to bring up later. “You wanna babysit the thirteen-year-old? Good luck, Dyl,” Erol joked in return. “Thank god he’s figured out manners but he’s still a teenager and I can’t have him giving you the runaround just for junk food,” He continued to tease, grinning so broadly his dimples were on full display. He snorted, “You think so? I’m gonna need that in writing for my next girlfriend,” He said with a laugh. He hadn’t seriously dated anyone since he was in his twenties and married to Em’s mother which… was mildly embarrassing now that he thought about it but he’d had his hands full raising his son so he figured he was allowed a pass, all things considered. “You’re the best,” He all but chirped, smiling warmly at his friend. It was mostly a joke but his genuine desire to look after the people he cared about was one that he couldn’t shake even in such a small way. He shrugged, “Half the time I think the folks with enough money to afford projects like that are… uh, how do I put this delicately? Fuckin’ rude. Like they’ve never had a friendly interaction with another person in their lives, y’know?”

"Alright, alright. I'll keep my comments to myself. But now I know where I should come if I'm in serach for a good snack, maybe I'll have you babysit at your house just so I've got a reason to come over." Dylan teased as she had a feeling that he would just bring her stuff if she needed it anyway. Erol had always been amazingly generous and even at times she'd felt burdensome he had shooed it away. "See? Great minds think alike here!" She exclaimed with a chuckle as she was glad he was going along with this. "Thanks, bud. You really are a keeper." Dylan laughed as she took a bit of fudge first, laughing as she covered her mouth with her hand as he talked about being stuck with a small tree. "We'll make sure you get the best tree possible. Don't you fret. No small little thing for you." She spoke confidently as if she had any say over this. But, now that it was getting closer to Christmas, she knew that plenty of people were ready for holiday shopping. "No, that sounds like hell! Puttin' you and your crew in danger isn't the right way to go 'bout it." She shared knowing that Erol already knew all that but sometimes agreeing with someone in their decision made them feel even better about it.

"Nah, these are strictly pumpkin patch snacks— Em's had me buy enough candy to fill one of our cabinets so I think I'm pretty much set on that," Erol explained. His eyes were bright with mirth even as he considered the fact that his son had convinced him to get enough Halloween candy to last them a full year unless Emre decided that was going to be his only food for a full week; not that Erol would allow that to happen, of course. "Let's see..." He hummed softly before he glanced into the bag he'd brought along to carry snacks and anything else he might've picked up while he was out. "I've got a bag full of cookies, a caramel apple that's probably not surviving the afternoon, cotton candy and some fudge. I don't have sweets much so I might've gotten... carried away." He admitted, shaking his head with a huff of laughter. The smile on his face only deepened as Dylan spoke— Providence Peak was his hometown and it had always made him smile to hear that people who'd grown up elsewhere had come to love it as much as he did as a native. "I've lived here my entire life and I've genuinely never gotten tired of it. Every year's different so there's always something new to do. Em really loves everything that goes on for Christmas so that's sort of when we go to just about everything together." He waved a hand in a vague gesture and shrugged, "Thankfully, no one's really had me update the exterior of their places during winter. I've had a couple people contract us for their porches and things but I tend to try and convince them to wait until the snow's not as bad. It's either that or I let another company snatch the contract up and that's... not ideal."

She shooed away his worries before plucking a few pieces and popping them in her mouth. "Ooh, that's good! I do like caramel corn, but also now I'm curious what else ya got. Or were those more for takin' home?" Dylan raised a brow in curiosity, always having had a sweet tooth, but of course she was also rather hungry. She knew that most people wouldn't complain about having to slow down, but of course for some reason she felt the need to apologize even though if roles were reversed she'd be the same way. "Well thank ya, I appreciate you puttin' up with me." She teased a bit as she very much enjoyed her friendship with Erol and knew that the feeling was mutual. "Yeah, me too. I really didn't want to miss this. It's one of my favorite things they do every year!" This was now her third autumn in Providence Peak and she loved how the community celebrated every year. Each year offered something different, but the feeling was still the same and she couldn't wait to think about bringing the twins along next year to share this with them. "Oh gosh, durin' the holidays?! Don't they know that's worst time with all the snow and ice and cold weather?" She felt like that was common sense, but obviously poor Erol knew better than most what people wanted with their homes. Dylan had just gotten a ramp added on to front and back doorsteps to make it more accessible, but the conditions hadn't been so bad yet.
